High On Life review - a joke of a game - Metro

A colourful, silly and deliberately over-the-top first person shooter, with severely undercooked gunplay and a sense of humour that will test the patience of even Rick and Morty fans.

ocelot07589d ago

Wow reviews are not looking good. I was excited for this. Still going to try it out on gamepass. If I enjoy it spite the reviews I'll buy it on playstation when it comes out.

HansyJ589d ago

You’re looking in the wrong place. There are several good reviews for this game. This game is absolutely not a five out of attend. This is a stupid review lol

Nyxus589d ago

I've seen several low reviews actually. Its currently 72 at Opencritic.

Christopher589d ago

I watched gameplay. I'll likely try it out eventually, but it didn't look great and R&M comedy has already worn thin on me.

I'd like to note that I think for most 5/10 scores, it's not meaning "garbage" but "mediocre" and not the usual "70-something means mediocre" scores that gamers have created in their own heads.

shinoff2183589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

Now that more reviews are out it's showing a bigger picture. Alot of high scored sites were fairly xbox centric

Christopher I agree. 5 is middle of the road imo. 7 is actually a pretty good game. 9s and 10 should be reserved for really special games. Somehow this day and age has managed to break the review score system

Terry_B589d ago

It got many positive reviews actually, And players on steam gave it a whooping 88%. Currently, almost 1000 players who reviewed it positively there.

Lifexline589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

It’s actually a really good game it’s funny. Most people seem to bash it because it’s simple and linear and too over the top. But there are not too many games like it so it’s very refreshing. This is one of those times where i disagree with most of the reviewers. It’s so funny and fun. Not everything has to be complex and open world as long as it’s fun and funny what else can you ask for.

For me this is the sleeper hit of 2022. Hopefully it does well enough so more games like it come out.

MadLad589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

Don't listen to most of the overly negative reviews, honestly.
I watched a good video of someone compiling most of the reviews of the game, and most of the bad reviews are from people who don't like this sort of humor and docked a lot of points just for that.
The gunplay is actually pretty smooth. It's not Doom by any means, but it's fun. Especially when you start getting multiple weapons; and I find the gameplay, as a whole, pretty enjoyable.
For the humor, I haven't even watched much at all of Rick and Morty, and I'm really enjoying it.

As a big shooter fan, and someone who is enjoying the humor, it's probably an 8 in my book.
My biggest issue is the grappling and climbing can be finicky, and I don't like how they implemented the waypoint system.

bangoskank589d ago

I personally don't like forced, lowbrow humor. I'm more into subtle, dry, or absurdist humor but somehow I'm enjoying this game A LOT. You can't go wrong if you have Gamepass.

TheLigX589d ago

Its an awesome game, and I'm loving it. I honestly dont know which game the reviewers played, but it's not the same one I've been playing.

MadLad589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

When you see a game typically getting 8s and 9s critically, and the average user reviews follow suit, but you're also getting a small number of 5s, it's realistic those sites chose the wrong person to review the game.
In this case, that person just doesn't like the sort of humor on display and is docking the game a lot because of it.

Metro at it again. They're very woke and while comedy is subjective, you can clearly see the notorious SJW journalist's are scoring this low and the ones that aren't are scoring it either fairly or highly.

For me it's a 6/10 game that gets an extra point or two due to the stupid funny comedy that I enjoy. I enjoy Rick and Morty, south park etc so it's right up my alley. Those that don't like that it won't gel with them. And the ones that have been trying to get shows like that cancelled for years will cry and stamp their feet for being offended as per.

Star51589d ago

There's been reviewers who've mentioned enjoying those shows and still finding the gameplay not enough to save it by comedy alone.

StarkR3ality589d ago

Yeah it's an average game, I'm not arguing it for being game of the year, but it's never aiming to be. It's a fun run with some laughs along the way. The gameplay isn't terrible and the humour for me just adds to it. Opinion is a great thing though, and my opinion is a lot of people a reviewing this negatively because they're easily offended.

shinoff2183589d ago

Stark I think your creating the people being offended in your own head. To negatively rate something doesn't mean your offended. The game even with humor just looks kinda eh. I'm not talking graphics or nothing just game itself. It also doesn't help my opinion I'm just not a huge fan of shooters

shinoff2183589d ago

I like Rick and Marty but I watch it in doses cause I definitely can get over some of it. I'm by no means "woke" at all. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean your woke

SullysCigar588d ago

Metro are awful and they're often strangely negative about games in general.

Elda589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

When I first saw the trailer I thought the game looked silly & the humor was dry. Instead...I'm looking forward to playing games like Persona 3 & 4,Atomic Heart,Wo Long & Lies Of P on GamePass.

shinoff2183589d ago

Those games I can get behind. This one not so much.

TicklefistCP589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

Game is a fun awesome time. Fuck anyone with a stick too deep in their ass to enjoy it.

HyperMoused589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

This review is a joke, the gun play is fine, its not great but its nowhere near what this review is saying, yes you have to pull the trigger for each shot of your pistol enemies dont die one shot no, and bosses take more than two hits, like they are supposed to be tougher in some way, you would complain if they weren't...id say the reviewer has missed the point for a lot of this, the paperwork bit wasnt so much as about the paperwork but about the situation and dialogue happening with the care bears. Some of those characters are meant to be annoying, its not an accident, reviews are an opinion and this is one i guess.

High On Life PS5 and Xbox Series limited print physical editions announced

Squanch Games will open pre-orders for physical standard and Collector’s editions of High On Life for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on February 27 via Limited Run Games and IGN Store, the developer announced. Pre-orders will close on March 31.

ravens52153d ago

I guess it's better than no physical at all. I was using LR when they first started. I have Oddworld New and Tasty, Octodad, Shadow Complex etc. I fell off at some point and just felt I couldn't continue so I stopped. I just would much rather be able to purchase these games off Amazon.

LoveSpuds153d ago

I used to give into fomo a lot in the early days but I am much more choosy these days. I did play this on Gamepass back in the day and had a good time with it, so I have pre-ordered a copy as I'd like to Plat this on my PS5.

jznrpg152d ago

These aren’t super limited prints so whoever preorders will get one.

BrainSyphoned153d ago

Does it come with the layer of dust this game deserves or do you have to work at it?

High On Life's DLC Hilariously Mocks God Of War Ragnarok's Puzzle Spoilers

The recently released High on Life DLC, High on Knife, takes a jab at God of War Ragnarok's puzzle-spoiling mechanic that irked many players.

ravens52291d ago

Lol. I always got em before he said anything anyway lol

Seth_hun291d ago

How? Because boy spoiling the puzzle before you even see it :D

MrNinosan291d ago

Same, wasn't there a setting for how quickly Atreus would spoil shit 😏

JEECE291d ago

Yeah I heard a lot about this before I played, and then it almost never affected me when I played the game (the few times it did were with bird form Freya).

Honestly it makes me wonder if a bunch of people are just really terrible at puzzles and took forever to do them and got hints. It's either that or they patched the game to slow down the hints (I played about 5 months after launch).

H9291d ago

Couldn't get more accurate tho

GoodGuy09291d ago

I like GOW puzzles but honestly I felt there was way too much in Ragnarok.

LoveSpuds291d ago

Perhaps another dev will include content in their game mocking devs who devalue their work by giving their games away on streaming services and then expecting to be able to charge full price for it a year later?

PhillyDonJawn291d ago

That doesn't devalue their work. They get paid regardless. How you wanna spend to play is up to the consumer

LoveSpuds291d ago (Edited 291d ago )

Getting paid my MS still devalued their work squire. Rightly or wrongly, when they announced the PS5 version of the game, I didn't give two hoots. It was an old game by the time it came, all the buzz had gone and I knew it was free elsewhere; there was no chance I was paying full price for that
now old game, it wasn't worth it in my view.

Even in articles that have absolutely nothing to do with GamePass, someone will inevitably bring it up.

Welcome to N4G.

Rgbsquad291d ago

Yeah I cringed when I read his comment. Like fr

porkChop291d ago

It's just a lighthearted joke. Don't take it so seriously.

jambola291d ago

Sad when other developers put more effort into Mocking a flaw than Santa Monica does into fixing it

Christopher291d ago

Literally a setting in Ragnarok to turn it off/lessen how often it happens.

Juvia291d ago

Yes
There is

All you are doing is showing that you never played it. What a fool.

jambola291d ago

Then tell me where
and if you're saying that, you're saying the same about the actual developers too

Christopher290d ago

Nah, jambola is correct and I was misremembering the setting. It was Time Delay for puzzles, not hint delay.
