The Callisto Protocol Has The Best Use Of PlayStation’s DualSense So Far

"The Calliso Protocol's best feature isn’t even in the game, it’s the controller."

Err, no. We play games, not controllers.

While I disagree with their above statement, the haptics in CP are well implemented.

Babadook7887d ago (Edited 887d ago )

I play games with a controller.

And I think their point stands.

Orchard887d ago

Correct... you play games... because games are the fun part.

The controller is just the input mechanism. Otherwise, you'd just play with the controller and have nothing on screen.

Obviously the best part of a game, is the game.

SullysCigar886d ago

^ Orchard, that's such a lame statement. Of course it makes a difference. DualSense increases feedback, control and immersion, literally enhancing gaming. Otherwise why innovate with controllers at all? Let's all go back to the old 'one rubber stick and one red button' Atari days lol

Saying the controller is "just the input mechanism" is dumb. It's as dumb as claiming sitting on an upturned milk crate is the same as your sofa - it's just a seat right? Makes no difference?! Lol

generic-user-name887d ago

"The controller is just the input mechanism."

Some controllers are advanced enough to also give output to the player from the game and if that's done well enough, I could absolutely see it being someone's favourite part of a game.

Orchard887d ago (Edited 887d ago )

If the controller is the best part of the game, the game itself can't be that good.

Callisto is a good game on it's own.

generic-user-name887d ago

@Orchard

I haven't played it myself, waiting on a price drop, so I can't say; but I've seen plenty say it's not good, including this writer.

"If the controller is the best part of the game, the game itself can't be that good."

Tell it to Steel Battalion.

CrimsonWing69887d ago

I mean look, these gimmicky features “add” to the fun. I’ll admit it’s pretty novel and, for me, it’s preferred over not having the feature.

Aloymetal887d ago

"Err, no. We play games, not controllers."
That's the same thing I keep telling Phil

LucasRuinedChildhood887d ago (Edited 887d ago )

Orchard, the opinion being put forward is no more controversial or hard to understand than someone saying that 3D is the best part of Avatar, and that they loved it.

If it massively adds to the movie like that, then it essentially becomes part of the movie.

"We watch movies, not 3D" would be a weird response in the case of Avatar. The effect it had on the experience can't really be downplayed. This situation is the same thing, except unlike 3D ... it's a technology currently exclusive to a particular platform. 😑

Game mechanics can even be delivered through the controller. For example, in Borderlands 3, each gun requires different tension to shoot (it's another variable that had to be assigned to the guns). In terms of feedback, you can feel far more differences and each gun feels more unique. It changed the experience and to an extent my behaviour playing the game.

Borderlands 2 with haptic triggers would be so good.

LucasRuinedChildhood887d ago (Edited 887d ago )

I'll also add that the Dualsense implementation helped compensate for issues I had with Borderlands 3 (e.g. some poor writing). It's just a lot more fun.

Now if you don't like it, that's fine but it does change the experience significantly, and that shouldn't be downplayed.

I hope we see a controller with Dualsense features on the Series X so these implementations get even better.

Profchaos886d ago

Exactly I mean Wii Sports works because it's a motion controller it would never have taken off if it was a standard controller

Sonic1881887d ago (Edited 887d ago )

The controller features actually made the game better imo. Hell I use the PS5 controller on PC as well.

GoodGuy09887d ago

Dont bother with an n4g comment section. This site is full of PS fanboys thinking the dualense and ps5 are the second coming of Jesus lol. Nintendo was already there first and sony goes and copies them as usual. It was cool in ragnarok as well but... honestly I wish sony went for ergonomics, durability, battery life, and back buttons instead. I can't hold a dualsense for more than an hour without feeling uncomfortable due to the feel and weight and a single game session or two without ever connected with a usb. I really hope sony or a 3rd party does a hall effect joystick controller some day as well.
A controller is something you shouldn't have to be bothered with while gaming and I'm afraid the dualsense does that for me. I prefer the ds4 but sadly ds4s have problems of their own...

EvertonFC886d ago (Edited 886d ago )

Nintendo doesn't have anything like duelsense pmsl.
You don't own a Nintendo or playstation do you?
Must be sad shitting on other systems just because you've had no games for 2 years on the Xbox.

Don't you need a controller to play games and this adds to the immersion ?

Profchaos886d ago

With no controller we would all be playing the kinnect and I just don't want to live in that world

CobraKai886d ago

If that were true, no one woulda cared that the Sixaxis had no force feedback, but people wanted force feedback. A controller connects the player to the game. It helps with the immersion if what we press immediately lines up with an action on screen and if we feel the actions that result from said button press. Yes games are the fun part, but the controller contributes to the overall fun.

It truly is a gimmick though, none of the haptic feedback from duelsense has made me go "wow that's so amazing, I couldnt play without that!"
I feel that it will be far different story in vr though.

EvertonFC886d ago

Have you not bought any games yet ?

Aussiesummer885d ago (Edited 885d ago )

It's a nice gimmick but not transformation, doesn't make me think "this game would be worse off without this. I couldn't play this game without it".
As I said I think it's implementation on psvr2 will have far more impact.

VariantAEC885d ago

Oh yeah... try playing R&C and correctly not triggering the secondary fire without resistive feedback. Nearly impossible during combat. The triggers lock in two places the first prevents accidental fore the second unlocks the secondary fire mode and each weapon has different characteristics. That's one good example the next is GT7 where breaking is transformed and you can even tell when ABS is or isn't engaged using the gamepad. If for some reason you play with the accelerator and break swapped the triggers will function properly unlike in FH5 on PC when using an Xbox One gamepad.

Aussiesummer885d ago

How weak are your fingers? Lol.
I feel it but it doesn't stop me just annoys me, it does the opposite of wow me and makes me want to turn it off.

VariantAEC883d ago

If my fingers were weak I'd probably have to turn it off but... my fingers are too strong to go without resistance. There's next to zero resistance at all on the PS5 triggers without using the adaptive resistance. That's what gives me trouble not triggering secondary fire in R&C.

To trigger secondary fire, you fully depress the shoulder button for most weapons. I find it next to impossible to use primary fire for most weapons in the game, because most require a half (or less than half) trigger pull in order to use primary fire, but they're hard to find without that resistance.

chicagOriginal886d ago

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Callisto Protocol and the DualSense implementation (which is lacking in a lot of 3rd party games), I do think Demon's Souls/Astro's implementation was better.

VariantAEC885d ago

Haven't played Calisto Protocol but Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and GT7 are up there with Astro's PlayRoom. For some reason I forgot about the resistive vibration that Astro's PlayRoom showcases until I thought about it when playing R&C:RA again. It didn't occur to me until I tried comparing GT7 and FH5 using their platform ecosystem's respective gamepads either. DualSense is more than a cut above the competition's gamepads.

Eh. Finally played Callisto Protocol via Gamepass. It was fine, but didn't feel like playing more than a couple hours in. I'll still grab it for free though. Have yet to purchase anything from the EPIC store, but still have over 20 games in my library.

Jingsing262d ago

Maybe it would be smarter to just play the free stuff on Epic rather than pay for a Microsoft rental service that gets removed from your library.

darthv72263d ago

Well thanks for that one Epic. Happy to add CP to the library.

blackblades262d ago

I have a lot in my library just need a handheld pc.

N4GTG262d ago

I have over 450 games in my Epic library and haven't purchased anything from Epic. Ever.

phatak262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

honestly even tho I still prefer steam, over the last 4 years I always collected the weekly epic games, and now suddenly when you look at your library one day you realize you picked up around 400 free games a good portion of which are AAA, big win, and with gog, amazon prime, crazy powerful gpu's like 4090, windows 11 being way better than the dark days of windows 8 there has never been a better time to be a pc gamer, this is simply the best time for pc gaming fhat I can remember.

blackblades262d ago

Basically epic for the free games, steam for the deals and both for the free of charge online play amongst other things.

What is everyone's guess on the Next Xbox I'd like to know.
I really think it'll be a PC Console that's open to all Game Stores. I think there will be more than one version aswell including a high end expensive one.
It looks like it's the only way out for Microsoft but an interesting one too..

Game had so many problems - bad frame-rate was #1 problem

BeRich233277d ago

I played it a year later after release on series x and there wasn't any problems, although that is a problem lol

ROCKY28277d ago

cool - I will redownload and give the game another chance :)
thx

Inverno277d ago

All too common for games to have ridiculously long dev cycles and have so much cut. Also too common for newer IPs to have their dev cycle cut short and be forced out before they're anywhere near a complete state. We're playing incomplete games either way cept some get good scores others are thrown to the wolves. 70 dollar standard be doin fine work this gen.

DivineHand125277d ago

I blame this issue on poor project management and directors.

Inverno276d ago

There's that, but these companies know they can hook people with early previews. Show proof of concept with a nice cinematic CG trailer and then show some gameplay with pretty graphics and then push out an incomplete product. Your modern consumer is overprotective about products they know nothing about, they will buy things without much thought.

anast276d ago

It's 100% a management issue from the top-down.

Green-Smurf277d ago

So much can be added but it was decent. Needs a sequel

mastershredder277d ago (Edited 277d ago )

Game was a already-done-before regurgitated mess. More content was not going to save it. Stepped off on the wrong foot altogether. Even free, it goes unplayed.

DivineHand125277d ago

There are points in the game that felt like it was drawn out so if content was cut then it was probably for the better.

The Callisto Protocol 2 Plans Discussed by Director; Mentions Cut Enemies, How They Wanted More Time

The Callsto Protocol 2 plans shared by Glen Schofield, as he also confirms they had to cut enemies and bosses in the first game.

XiNatsuDragnel279d ago

Callisto protocol 2 should use those cut features

excaliburps278d ago

We're never seeing a sequel unless Krafton greenlights it which I highly doubt.

-Foxtrot278d ago

Why? The DLC pretty much wrapped everything up and was awful.

Especially what they did to Jacob over making a sequel which could have gave him better character development.

Toecutter00278d ago (Edited 278d ago )

Callisto Protocol is an extremely underrated game (after the updates). Krafton, however, made a mistake by looking to overmonetize a single player game by cutting out content and selling it as dlc. Paying for extra death animations was scummy. And you can't get away with that crap with a new IP. Save it the sequel or, better yet, don't do it at all. Survival horror is a crowded market.

thesoftware730278d ago

I agree, I played and enjoyed the game very much.

Paying for death animations was a ridiculous proposition from the start, and was destined to fail.

Azfargh277d ago

I still play from time to time, kept installed on my pc and even some mods (dlss mod and some INI config optimizations) improved even more the experience. It is still an fun experience and the graphics and animations helps me want to go back even more... Yeah, paying for death animations: what they were thinking?

amazing horror game and unbelievable graphics, really happy that a sequel is being discussed.
