NS and XS Sell Over 1.2M, PS5 Over 1M - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for Nov 20-26

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 1,298,185 units sold for the week ending November 26, 2022, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch has now sold an estimated 117.22 million units lifetime.

The Xbox Series X|S sold 1,206,483 units to bring their lifetime sales to 19.86 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 1,054,517 units to bring its lifetime sales to 27.54 million units.

1.2-1.3 million units in a week is kinda insane when we've been seeing 100-500k for the past year. Black Friday drives an insane amount of sales.

Also, Switch has finally taken the scalp of PS4 (despite being on the market for half the time). GameBoy next. Will it overtake the DS & PS2 to be #1? Possibly.

Passing the GB should be easily by the end of the year, if not sooner. As for beating DS and PS2... I don't think so. I dont believe they got enough left in the tank to reach those numbers. Especially if they havent even had a price cut outside of the cheaper lite version. Keep in mind that both DS and PS2 had price cuts in the later years to help reach those numbers.

I can see them getting to the #1 spot on one condition - they make a Switch Pro.

It can get to #1 for several reasons, but if we focus on the main the two:

1. There are more gamers today than in the PS2 era.

2. It is extremely common for households to have more than one Switch. I would personally like to see mean consoles per household, which I suspect for Switch is 2-3 on average. There could be some duplication (e.g., Switch Lite for travel and traditional/OLED for home) but other duplications due to failure rate/hardware issues, I expect, are low (unless you have a Lite and replaced a unit with joycon drift).

I think it could definitely get there, even without a Pro. It's a little irritating though. I like the Switch, but Nintendo has really gotten a big head from its success. Sadly, they're being rewarded for it and they will take it as validation of their practices. Games are great, but their fan base really needs to be more antagonistic when it's warranted.

PS2's got down to what, 129$? The switch has a little ways to go in order to be cheap enough to catch the PS2. Though the fact that its a portable system and money is basically worthless right now means anything can happen.

The point spinoff is trying to make is yes the numbers are super high, but since two markets were combined for it, try dividing it in half and see how impressive it is. Nintendo could of had a console selling really well AND a hand held selling insanely well, you know two markets, they combined that to 1 market..........how are you all impressed by this?

Yeah it’s crazy numbers for Xbox it shows it’s still in high demand but availability and pricing affect it. Imagine if it actually had games coming out for it how it would sell. Microsoft is messing up big time they have an opportunity to pass PlayStation but they need games for a game console lol. Which is why they need activision.

As for switch Nintendo consoles are always beats.

Xbox are showing these types of numbers becaise of the insane deals on the xbox S for black friday which presumably was picked up by the casual/mom & pops who wanted to gift a console for Christmas.

Not taking anything away from them, but it should be at least mentioned if we are talking demand.

Any gamer would be going for the X.

We will see how the sales go next week, if they're still 1m+ then maybe there is a bigger demand.

If it drops off to 600k or less then that just proves that S2's theory is a solid one.

Nobody will ever touch the PS2, it was a different industry back then. Switch especially has nowhere near the legs to do that.

Since when were sales numbers 'base consoles only'? If that's true, then the PS4 probably sold around half of what is being counted since there will be a lot of PS4 slim and PS4 pro sales included in the current numbers.

Questionable whether we should compare a home console to a handheld. Also questionable whether Nintendo Switch is a home console that can go mobile or a handheld with a nice dock. (The Switch Lite is 100% a handheld.) I also never forget how small these numbers are compared to smart phone and tablet sales.

The PS4 hasn't been on the market for twice as long as the Switch. It's only 3 years older (6 vs 9 years).

In general, I think you might be looking at this in a flawed way. It's not selling twice as fast as the PS4 did up to this point.

The PS4 achieved most of its sales in the first 6 years (the Switch is currently 6 years old), and then the sales plummeted after the PS5 was announced in 2019, and that's quite normal. It was similar for the XB1. I think PS4 sales were down ~60% in 2020 alone.

They have an existing fanbase, but in terms of console sales, PS4 and XB1 sales are a fraction of their prime years - they're pretty much dead. The Series S is way cheaper than the PS4 these days (it was only €210 for Black Friday which is cheaper than even the Switch Lite).

I think the Switch will finish in the 130-140m range if there's no Switch Pro. I think the next console might be more of a Switch 2 though with heavy cross gen support.

Correction to my comment: the next console will probably be like the "New 3DS".

There will be some games that are exclusive and take advantage of the hardware but it will technically still be counted as Switch sales.

Nintendo has become an "and" company. Its not a nintendo OR a playstation/xbox. Its an xbox or playstation AND a switch. if it wasnt for a few of their core titles being exclusive, it wouldnt even exist. 0 people would choose a switch over a ps4 if the games were the same.

the wiiU wasnt really portable in the same sense as the switch. the switch is a handheld-first console. another reason its a good companion (and) console. there is no DS this generation. nintendo consolidated their sales into one device. You do know even after the 'MASSIVE MASSIVE profits' you keep referring to, gaming division of Sony still pulls in much more quarterly profits than Nintendo? Heck even MS was close to Nintendo last I checked. Turns out earning money with online services and 30% game split from 3rd parties > peanuts earned on each console sold.

That is the number that drives when a Switch Pro comes out and not just hardware sales. Most companies will cannibalize their own sales if it meant higher profits. Literally what Sony is doing right now when it raised the prices of a PS5 outside of US. Profits > Number of units sold in the grand scheme of things for the businesses.

I bought a series s during black Friday weekend. Even at the discounted price I was still 50/50 about buying one.

Then the Amazon Warehouse Blackfriday discount dropped. Series S (damaged box) for £145. Roughly the same price as a second hand Xbox one X. I couldn't say no to day. Not go around to setting it up yet. But can't wait to try out the emulation on it.

Yer my main reason for getting one is for the emulation and playing older generation Xbox games. Expecially the likes of oblivion and fallout 3 and new Vegas. As as og Xbox games.

Won't use it for new series games as I have a pc for that. But you never know if I really get into a new game that's on gamepass and I don't want to sit as my pc desk I can always sit on my comfy chair and play on the TV with the series s.

Can I just say how mad it is that Xbox has sold pretty much 20 million without really releasing, well anything. Estimates put Xbox one at 50 mill or there abouts. That's more than 1/3 of the sales in 2 years when Xbox one has been available for 9, this to me shows 2 thing.

1.Xbox one was genuinely shit. (Even though it sold well enough, it was terrible compared to 360)

2. This website or any other just does not represent the market in anyway shape or form.

End of the day we can say what we want about their 1st party output, customers main concern will always be first and foremost PRICE.

I just wish that instead of buying studios and then doing absolutely nothing with them, they started actually capitalising on a console that's outselling the Xbox 360 (bare in mind that console had 0 competition year 1) they would be in a genuinely great place. It's selling without games, God knows where they would be if they released any.

The sales are due to deep price cuts and discounts. You can literally buy a XSS for around 200. Exclusive games do help a little but people here way oversell how much of an impact they make in comparison to price cuts and sales. I'd wager next year PS5 will have a better runway since they have room now for much deeper price cuts in comparison to MS. Right now, they're selling out of every single console even at above MSRP in countries outside USA from when it launched. Demand is outstripping supply by the huge margin.

Exactly, I've given up defending them but some of the games that are supposedly in the works I am looking forward to, if they finally start hitting the mark then things can only get better for consumers with he competition. I get what you're saying, but it does have an impact, PS5 got a bump when God of war launched and historically there is always a bump around big exclusives as that might be the game that buyers have been waiting for. On the Series S thing, PS5 has a cheaper alternative also, yes it's more capable and not as cheap but still. I also don't think there is any chance of a price cut from Sony baring in mind they just hiked the price in all regions expect US where Xbox is beating them. Xbox's are more readily available than PS5 granted, but that's why I'm saying the jump the growth potential they have if they launched solid exclusives is larger than what Sony has as they are already doing that. If Xbox is keeping pace now, releasing games would make it even more even.

I think people just need to acknowledge that Xbox isn't going away anytime soon as much as they would like them to. Their hardware is selling, if they match that up with good games then things look interesting. I want good games coming to all 3 platforms, that makes me most happy as then there's more to enjoy!

You seem to think I'm defending them, I not, I am stating facts. Their output has been lacking. Yeah casuals.. who do you think is more important to every gaming company to ever exist, they probably make up 70 - 80% of the market, look at the switch and the Wii, think Nintendo is bothered they cater to "casuals".

Another thing I have to call out my friend is how you're having a go at the Series S yet I've seen you and others defend Sony for catering to the PS4 with all of their exclusives bar a couple. Series S is clearly paying off for them and everything is identical pretty much other than the GPU. CPU, Memory, SSD is barely any worse and the differences should be offset by a simple drop in Res/frame rate cap.

Not a single game that's come out on both sides that the series S couldn't play well. Microsoft is giving away the series s. At launch they were losing 100 on each console and 200 on the x. Now they cut the price in 100. So each console is at least 200 lost. Nintendo makes tons of profit in every single console. The ps5 cost more then double the s.

First, it was supply constraints, that was why MS was keeping some kind of pace with Sony.

Now Nintendo combining markets is the only reason why Switch is selling well....you ever think that was their plan? and now they are making money hand over fist..they are not playing into your fan wars, they are playing to sell and make money.

Now Xbox SS is selling because it's cheaper and giving them away...you ever think that is why they made them? to sell for cheaper... the SS wasn't accidentally made you know.(btw.
