Oh Hey, That New Anime Need For Speed Game Is Very Good - Kotaku

EA’s next big driving game, NFS Unbound, has both a ton of style and high-stakes action

"Oh hey, that New animae NFS game is very good "

Not a fan of the new identity, but sure... Go with it. I haven't liked the franchise for quite some time now anyway. My personal favorite will always be the original NFS 3: Hot Pursuit. The 1998 version.

DarXyde923d ago

I think the last game in the franchise I really enjoyed was the original Need for Speed: Most Wanted on PS2. I think Carbon or Shift came after that and it was all downhill.

I wouldn’t mind an ‘anime’ Need for Speed. Hell, I think that would/could be the breath of fresh air this stale series desperately needs, IF DONE RIGHT*, but this, whatever this is, isn’t ‘anime’.

It just seems like they threw a bunch of stuff together and said ‘okay, this should do it’.
“Folks didn’t like live-action C-actors in our game; Let’s fix that with cell-shaded characters instead!”
“Okay, we have new powerful hardware to work with, so the game needs to look more realistic and shinier than ever!”
“Won’t that jar with the cell-shaded cartoony characters!?”
“Nah, we’ll fix that with overlaying everything with bright, colorful effects! That should blend everything nicely!”

It just looks ‘jarring’, I guess. And it’s shouty and in your face about it. Then the actual world your driving in looks kinda ‘meh’. Not sure why, probably to contrast the characters and effects, but the world itself just looks ‘drab’, or ‘muted’, in terms of visual colors, brightness, whatever.

To get back to ‘anime NFS’. Clearly, this isn’t it, but IF they actually did that, it COULD/WOULD be a possibility for really doing something new & exciting with the series, again, if done right.

The series desperately needs a new, fresh location, and Japan would be perfect. The series has leaned towards story-telling (regardless of it being necessary, interesting or even relevant, sadly), but if you’re gonna take that route, there are lots of manga/anime to take inspiration from. There is also some great pop-culture with a rich history to take full advantage off. You could build an ideal, over-the-top ‘Japan, with gorgeous nature, charismatic old towns, modern cities, and just fill that world with interesting eye-candy like maybe dropping a Gundam somewhere, some beautiful temples, whatever.

An actual anime-NFS, if done right, would at least get my full attention. If they’d be ambitious enough to really nail it.

I dunno, not a single NFS game has ever felt good to me since the PS2. yet every other entry is "actually good" till i try it, then suddenly i look around to see if im crazy only to find the consensus has changed to "same old sh!t" so i'm not even going to bother unless people are still singing its praises months after release (which i highly doubt)

plmkoh923d ago

I think people need to take a chill on this game and realize what was popular with millennials 10-20 years ago is no longer the same thing with GenZ. Car interest is at an all time low and continually falling, this is then further eroded by utilitarian ubiquitous rise of EVs.

It's understandable why they've gone with this direction IMO. Give them constructive feedback otherwise the series may well end some day without even trying.

Si-Fly923d ago (Edited 923d ago )

Which country do you live in? I feel car culture in the UK is probably at an all time high. If anything the advent of EV’s is driving the passion for combustion engines right now!

Note I may have a slightly scewed perspective as I live just down the road from Caffeine&Machine 🤣

ZycoFox923d ago

EVs which now have tax in rip off Britain, but what else is new in this stinking police state of a country that tries to screw you out of every penny.

Need for Speed will return in “new and interesting ways,” says EA

Support for Need for Speed Unbound has ended as Criterion focuses on the new Battlefield.

RaidenBlack130d ago

Plz no live service only NFS.
You already tried that with the reboot which was online only.

FinalFantasyFanatic129d ago

I can totally see them doing that again.

andy85130d ago

Just give me Underground 2 remastered

Fonsecap129d ago

Don't known if you're aware, but there is a modding team remastering the game in unreal engine 5, look for it it's looking good.

ApocalypseShadow130d ago

But no Burnout since you bought the competition to kill their game. And what's left of Criterion who stayed, were put to make your game need for speed. Don't care what ways it comes back. It's EA. No buy.

CosmicTurtle129d ago

They bought Criterion for their middleware engine Renderware I believe. But the studio was a bonus.

TheColbertinator130d ago

I enjoyed NFS Heat but they never built properly on that.

When to expect a great one should be the question. Must be 15 years

Dandalandan117149d ago

Why can't they just give fans what they want?
Remake NFSU, NFSU2, or the original Most Wanted.
Or what about a new Burnout game perhaps?

Deathtracker149d ago

We've been waiting for these remakes since, like, forever.

badboyz09149d ago

I'll wait for Midnight Club😁

The_Hooligan149d ago

Same. They should remaster the trilogy. I'll buy it day 1. I still have all three for the PS2.

Michiel1989149d ago

fuck need for speed, give us a new burnout by Criterion

Fonsecap149d ago

Search YouTube for Need for speed underground 2 remaster, modders are porting the game to UE

How Need for Speed has reinvented itself for 30 years

"Need for Speed has always been too ahead of its time." An in-depth development team interview, covering 30 years of NfS.

gold_drake171d ago

underground 1 and 2 are still the best ones.

isarai170d ago

And they're spent every game after that trying to chase that high and never meeting it

Ninver169d ago

Makes you think if gamers are looking to relive nostalgia or each dev that has attempted to mimic the glory days are just incompetent?

DarXyde169d ago

Truth. Loved Midnight Club.

I wouldn't be mad at another proper Underground or Most Wanted (PS2/X360) entry though.
