God of War Ragnarok Review - IGN Korea

IGN Korea: "The game’s core design has not moved an inch since the prequel and the story seems to be lacking in creativity in comparison. Unlike the well coordinated experience as a whole like last time, everything in Ragnarok seems to act like soulless puppets attached to a series of strings.

Although the reskinned aspect of a working formula seems to be the safest bet, if we were to find any sort of effort of evolution since the prior title, it wouldn’t feel as lackluster from a highly anticipated title to make its grand entrance. This one feels rather like a quickly brewed DLC of the previous title instead."

I actually read the full thing.

Hmmm

senorfartcushion933d ago

They aren’t wrong in some of their criticism, but a lot of it comes in the advertising. They’re right to judge the thing as bulked-out dlc because it was meant to be dlc. They reviewer, though entitled to be annoyed at the studio’s frugal attempt to make a sequel, shouldn’t have been surprised.

It’s like criticising BVS for being dark. The trailers were dark. If you didn’t like it dark, then sure, rant away… but you were warned, so make sure you don’t write the criticism as though it was something you were shocked to hear.

Flawlessmic933d ago (Edited 933d ago )

Wth are you talking about this was meant to be DLC? Your pulling that out of your ass. Frugal?? Are you kidding?

It was always meant to be a full fledged sequel which it is.

This bullshit narrative is starting to piss me off, apparently Sony's games now need to be revolutions for every new game now other wise it's just dlc.

Mean while you drop kicks do not hold that standard to any other console dev first party's.

So I guess all sequels to great games that were just evolutions were just dlc games then?? I guess there was gears 1 and then 2-5 were just dlc really.

I mean I could sit all day and list a series of sequels that by your thinking would all be dlc then???

Then again I guess when you got nothing to play trying to find and create fake narratives if all you got.

And yea the reviewer is an idiot too, if you loved the first game then by all accounts this game is better in everyway so he should love it aswell, not that it needs to be a 10 but how you give this a 6 is beyond me.

Anyways doesn't matter in 4 days I'll be playing this masterpiece, can't wait to see how the story ends.

IRetrouk933d ago (Edited 933d ago )

Cory barlog says you are full of it🤣
Biggest god of war game ever yet its dlc?
Scored the same as 2018 yet had more reviews, your downplay is really bad🤣

Palitera933d ago

"He is right in his criticism", says the hater who never played the game. HAHAHA

darkrider933d ago

Dude, dlc, just stop. That's the talk of fanboys with no games. The game is massive and this opinion is crap. Because if this game is 6 only if the scale goes to 6...

There nothing on the market with this quality, it's scary. Not even close. . Zero. This isn't a game that got 10 with zero evolution on the combat system, copy paste sound from last game, major bugs and problems running, but was trendy to say it was amazing even if more then 60% players could even beat the first boss....

thecodingart933d ago

“Meant to be dlc”. What in the world, where did this magical rabbit come from?

ClayRules2012933d ago

Please give a source (such as Cory or someone from the team at SSM) having said this was meant to be “DLC” because you agreeing with this reviewer who says such a thing, along with some others is just ridiculous.

Many said the same thing about HZ: Forbidden West, that it was meant to be DLC, which it was NOT meant to be whatsoever. Buddy, but if it would have been, that was some of the absolute best DLC I’ve ever played! Heck, better than many fully fleshed out games, with all the improvements it had over Zero Dawn.

I don’t know what some people are expecting from these sequels, SSM to revolutionize the gameplay, AGAIN from 2018?? They had a formula that worked, hit hard, flowed beautifully, with very few problems. So, they go in there, improve on what worked, add things in there, new combos, attacks, runes etc, while fixing where they missed the mark. It’s really unrealistic to think the gameplay was going to be another big leap, because it doesn’t need to be, it already works so so well. And based on reviews (I’ve been away recently) but heard a few, SSM have taken fans criticism about boss fights and cranked that up, but also made those fights meaningful, yet awesome.

Ragnarok, much like HZFW improves on everything it’s predecessors fell a bit short on (which wasn’t much in either game) and now they’ve been improved, polished and shined to look and play better than ever, offering gamers an amazing and fun experience.

If that’s not enough for you, the known quality and quantity on offer with 95% of Sony’s first party studios games which is unmatched, go elsewhere, game and enjoy Microsoft, Nintendo and the offerings on PC.

S2Killinit933d ago

IGN: its a Sony game so 6/10 because reasons.

Father__Merrin933d ago

It's a full 20h to 30h plus sequel. New everything a. Full game

933d ago
Lifexline933d ago

I agree with the reviewer just based on what the developer said that it’s more of the same and not much new from the developers mouth. Why do call of duty games get criticized for being more of the same and other games as well but god of war doesn’t?

Lightning77933d ago

"They’re right to judge the thing as bulked-out dlc because it was meant to be dlc."

I never heard anything like that there was always meant to be a full blown sequel. You're going off of baseless rumors from 4 years ago and the fact that writer is using fake information is..... Just... . How does he have his journalistic credentials he should be fired immediately for that. I hate when ppl make stuff up or use fake rumors to spread an agenda.

The low score in his opinion. He used fake made up info to further justify his score. In fact, I think it's biasness. This review is completely tainted and shouldn't count for the overall metacritic. Of course it will because that's how it has to be.

neutralgamer1992933d ago

It's twice the size of 2018 game and ACG said it feels like 2 games worth of content because it was originally supposed to be a trilogy

So again what are you talking about

XboxSwitchPS5Gamer932d ago

We don't care!! We look forward to this and play this 2022's masterpiece game!! :D

senorfartcushion932d ago

@flawlessmic

Found a flaw in that you either have a bad memory or can’t read. Ragnarok was pitched as DLC. You’ve probably never had to pitch anything before (I have) but it takes time. And Ragnarok was pitched while they were developing it on the ps4.

The game is exactly as I say it is. If you have an issue with it being pitched as dlc, that’s not my fault. But make sure you read up on game lifecycles and stop being a child.

You seem to like massive videogame companies like they’re your friends in real life. That’s sad 😂😂

https://www.gameinformer.co...

MrNinosan932d ago

@SenorFartCushion
So because he mention the wording DLC and God of War, you automatically translate this
"I had a really fun idea for a DLC that I only regret because I would love to have done that, but it was too ambitious." to "I had a really fun idea for a DLC and I will now change the plans of our next game and instead create this DLC".

Get real man, and I feel sorry for you that you can enjoy amazing crafts.
One day you might find something for you.

IRetrouk932d ago

That's some reach🤣
Bet you didn't call any of the gears games dlc, or forza, or halo or elder scrolls or fallout or pgr or rallisport challange or any other game series I could possibly list.
Just know that cory is taking the piss outta "gamers" like you🤣

Did they take 4 away from the score because it's not on game pass?

Crows90933d ago

It doesn't have micro transactions, no live service aspect, and no multiplayer....that's why they dunked it.

They should be proud of this 6/10.
It's a sign of the times and how much they are going against the bullshit tide.

CantThinkOfAUsername932d ago

He took away 4 because the first half of the game was too good it made him sob and got him thinking about telling his parents about this game, then the second half pissed all over his experience.

This score stands out like a sore thumb. No way am I giving this clickbait review a click.

S2Killinit933d ago (Edited 933d ago )

I read it too it was garbage.

I’ll leave this description of the game because tis the season:

“ The freezing winds of Fimbulwinter have come to Midgard, making survival for Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir in the Norse wilds even more challenging than before.”

Christmas is going to be sweet this year.

The purpose of reviews not to merely reinforce what you want to believe. If you want to ignore any opinion contrary to yours then what's the point of reviews or opinions at all? "Oooh they said what I wanted them to say, SO COOL, upvote!!!"

Crows90933d ago

I don't care about opinions. Reviews are both objective and subjective. I don't buy it when they hide behind the opinion bs

S2Killinit933d ago

The opinion has to be worth something.

frostypants932d ago (Edited 932d ago )

@Crows90 that is such a muppet comment. Reviews ARE entirely opinions. And I don't think you understand what "objective" means. There is no objectively false statement in this review. Only subjectively questionable. But...that's subjective.

CrimsonWing69932d ago (Edited 932d ago )

I think @Crows90 is on to something. A review is not just entirely opinion because anyone can give an opinion about anything and that’s not a review.

As a critic you’re supposed to be a subject matter expert, that way when you criticize something there’s a basis for what you are criticizing things on, and generally speaking, it’s typically based on juxtaposition of games that have pushed the genre forward or at the very least have design elements that “work”. Things that everyone can recognize more as fact versus opinion. Such as third person controls that incorporated over-the-shoulder fps like aiming being “better” and more “intuitive” than third person shooting games before it. I mean… I feel that’s more fact than opinion, right?

I can say God of War Ragnarok gets a 1/10 because I found it boring and too similar to the original, but I don’t think that’s a valid or even fair criticism especially given the previous game’s reviews.

Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean you’re right. I think as a reviewer it’s your job to strive to be as objective as you can.

DrDoomer933d ago

lol wtf is this?
"game is too similar to the awesome previous game, therefore it sucks"

Bathyj933d ago

Clearly they belong to the if it ain't broke you SHOULD fix it school of thought, when though all the reviews are claiming Ragnarok is better in every aspect.

InUrFoxHole933d ago

The only thing they needed to fix was enemy variety = GOTY! IMO

KyRo933d ago

Exactly. No game sequels truely innovate anymore. Gaming has just become a slightly refined version of what came before it when I comes to sequels unless it's a reboot like the last GOW game.

Gaming for the most part is in the worst state it's been in for decades but marking down a game because it's to similar to it's previous game when it's something almost every game suffers from is backwards.

darkrider933d ago

It will be fun to see another game that was already goty just with a small teaser that didn't had nothing beside ancient mechanic.

Extermin8or3_933d ago

Lol what? If you first game is God of war 2018- then the games so damn good there isn't much you can do in terms of improving and innovating. You don't fix what isn't broken and the first game is a masterpiece. Simply continuing and finishing the story with aimilar gameplay with the minor improvements possible automatically makes the sequel a masterpiece if the story is well written and entertaining.

thecodingart933d ago

Too similar to the previous game that drastically changed the formula for the prior x amount of games.

lucian229933d ago

At the same time these kind of idiotic reviewers would complain that the game is too different from the prior game if they changed it at all.

Can't win with these types

JonnyBeoulve933d ago

I agree with them. Boring game.

Good-Smurf932d ago

Guess the guy gave every racing and sports game 1/10 because it doesn't do some alien revolution shit in every game.

the review Phil and team green been waiting for is here, the holy gospel of reviews lol.

This that review that make you feel better because you can't play god of war.

Bathyj933d ago

C'mon, I don't think Phil really wants this game to be bad. Hes been waiting to play a good game since Forbidden West.

senorfartcushion933d ago

Phil isn’t a relatable person for you.

He’s too rich for any of us to be able to relate to. Stop buying into MS’s advertising.

JBplusVB932d ago

Phil is very relatable and is nearly perfect at his job. He has taken control and really has pushed Xbox in a great direction.

darkrider933d ago

It went first topic... Amazing trash being number one on the site...

Jericho1337933d ago

Can’t read a God of War comments page without Xbox being brought up. It’s obviously going to be an amazing game regardless of an single persons opinion from a well known site which, let’s face it, goes completely against the grain of the overwhelming majority.

S2Killinit933d ago (Edited 933d ago )

It due to all the xbox fans in the thread trying to grasp to their last shred of sanity, and failing.

What an absolute half-hearted and shoddy way for Sony to commemorate the epic God of War series. A few alternative skins and the option to buy t-shirts or vinyl. It would have been better to not have any celebration. Abysmal.

No offense Sony… but nobody is playing God of war ragnarok in 2025…

Every month in 2025 God of War Ragnarok has had more steam users than Starfield.

Bruv I'm pretty there are more people playing literally anything BUT Starfield.

Damn Sony
You keep on remastering recent games and yet choose not to for a franchise that's celebrating it's 20 years?
I'm sure a lot of old and new fans would appreciate being able to play the entire saga using their current gen consoles.

Shane Kim73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

Sure but that would require to actually remaster. Not selling the same game from last gen in a new box and call it remaster.

Profchaos73d ago

I admit I got a bit swept up in thinking we would get a PS classics drop of the first game on PS plus not a remaster or anything just running under the new ps2 emulator id be.halpy with that or the PSP games that deserve more praise really
