Sony says Third-party AAA titles like Modern Warfare 2 allow us to maintain strength

Company CFO Hiroki Totoki says that content has been sluggish through Q2, and that third-party games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will help buoy the PlayStation brand against these forecast and sales misses. Totoki also expresses confidence in big first-party games like God of War: Ragnarok, however these first-party titles have historically sold significantly less than their third-party counterparts.

Bunch of morons!, what games do they think put Playstation in the number one spot in this game industry since decades?, it wasn't COD thats for effing sure!. because PS1 kicks Nintendos arse in the 90s because of COD right?, because PS2 was the number console cause COD right?, or how about PS3 a year later release against the 360 who had COD on the day one, and still the PS3 manage to be on top in the end.

Every yearly COD game is highly lucrative. COD is immune to Metacritic ratings and performance issues. Sells extremely well at full price, and then the multiplayer has monetization. You are not paying $70 billion for nothing. You are not fighting hard to keep COD multiplatform for nothing.

That was then.... this is now.

Consoles need third party support, they can't make enough games without it. Playstation and Xbox have always benefitted from strong third party support. Playstation also has good first party support, which is why it's been so successful.(compared to xbox which has been forza, gears, halo) Even Nintendo consoles struggled when they had poor third party support.

“these first-party titles have historically sold significantly less than their third-party counterparts.”

Recently many of Sony’s big hitters have sold 10+ million

SlothLordPootus930d ago

Yes, with the PS4 install base growing to over 100 million, we frequently saw 10+ million sales for exclusives. That still pales in comparison to COD's 30+ million every year, with the biggest portion of the player base playing on PS. MW2 sold over 10 million in 3 days, not over multiple years. And holidays havent hit yet.

Immagaiden930d ago

Yeah Call of Duty sells well, but the statement said ‘counterparts’ as in plural.

Other than Call of Duty what other third party series and titles are consistently releasing and selling 10+ million

SlothLordPootus929d ago

Sports games, unisoft games, GTA. Most major releases are going to sell close to that. Dont forget all the microtransactions that go along with those and fortnite either. Its also only Sony's biggest franchises that reach that 10 million mark. Smaller exclusives are still only selling a couple million

SullysCigar930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

It's not like Sony aren't doing their part in providing amazing games from cherished franchises. They just stopped chasing COD realising that gamers didn't need an alternative, as proven buy sales numbers.

Now the rug is being pulled from underneath them by the much bigger school bully who can't seem to beat them in a fair fight.

XbladeTeddy930d ago

Since when has business been a fair fight? It's kill or be killed.

giovonni930d ago

Right, lol. Making it sound like a after school special. This is business

Jericho1337930d ago

Just like what they did to Sega? Funny how things come around like that.

shinoff2183930d ago

Sega wasnt innocent by no means. Resident evil code veronica was first on dreamcast. Sega did stuff to. Even when it was sega vs ninty

Jericho1337929d ago

Exactly, it’s called business. You can moan and play the whole school playground analogy as much as you like, but ultimately it’s standard practice across the industry. Sully on N4G though thinks cries when MS do it and blindly ignores Sony doing it… cute.

Asplundh930d ago

Oh poor Sony, poor multi billion dollar company. They were all fine with acquisitions until the competitor bought one that they couldn't afford.

Abear21929d ago

The fact that Microsoft thinks they need Bethesda AND COD exclusivity to complete with Nintendo and Sony is laughable. Funny thing is it really wouldn’t hurt Sony, hopefully they do lose it and they remake Killzone.

Asplundh929d ago

They would lose some of the more casual players if that were to happen and not to mention the revenue they would lose, it would definitely hurt Sony hence why they're trying to keep the deal from going through. I don't see MS making it exclusive though.
