2008 will probably be the last year gamers will see anything remarkable happen on the PS2 ever again. As the year concludes, PS3 Fanboy is taking these last few days to look back and reflect upon the titles that have come out for this veteran console -- a system which has outlived its contemporaries long after they've retired. While 2007 was easily the "Year of the J-RPG," 2008, however, is a bit more difficult to define.
As 2008 marked PS3's second full year out on the market, the PS2 was unfortunately overshadowed and came out with a dwindling amount of new games and even fewer new IP. If there ever was a theme associated with this year, it would be "the final push" as this year was all about remakes, rereleases and some last minute revivals in an attempt to keep the system still going. So what titles are those exactly? After the break we showcase eight PS2 titles which stood out of the crowd this year. It's a rather diverse group but one whose impact won't be felt again in the upcoming year. It's time for the PS2 to stand down and pass the torch.
Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”
Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.
They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.
Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?
A new leak has potentially revealed one more game that is set to be added the PS Plus Premium lineup of titles in July, 2025.
The voice actors for Arthur Morgan and Charles Smith have vaguely confirmed a claim by Rob Wiethoff (voice of John Marston) that big news related to the Red Dead franchise will be coming "before Friday."
I hope it's a remake of the 1st game. But it's probably just the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2
I hope a PS5 upgrade launches on the same day as announcement & it costs no more than $10. I already bought the Ultimate Edition once, they got good money from me.
I stopped playing completely 2 years ago until they did 60fps. I really didn't expect it would take this long & I didn't want to start completely over on PC.
My wish is that its optimized for current gen machines, with some sort of story expansion. Undead nightmare 2! My 2nd wish is that it just shadow drops on the day of the announcement!.
The PS2 is not dying next year either. With EA bringing out Madden/FIFA ,Activision bringing out Guitar Hero on the PS2 yearly and still making a profit,it will continue to sell games.Especially with Sony approving open development on the PS2.
YAKUZA 2 WAS AWESOME,GO BUY THE DAMN GAME MAYBE SEGA RELEASE THE KENZAN AND YAKUZA 3 OUT OF JAPAN
*Caps off*
ps2 was the greatest system ever launched. Not quite time to RIP yet, one last push for 2009!
This might be an opportune moment to remind fellow European users that the PS2 (series 9000) is already retailing for €99,99 in some stores. Theres no excuse not to have one now! It's simply one of the best systems ever, right up there with the Atari 2600 and the NES.
they shud drop the price to 99$ , starting next year as it should be the last year of the ps2..
