First day Sales in Japan - WKC sold about 100 K in 1 day

-White Night Chronicles sold somewhere around 100,000 on it's first day with a high sell-through rate.
-The supply has been sold out even to whole sellers. Due to it being the year end, Shipments are slower then normal.
-Another Shipment should go out by the weekend.

-Phantasy Star Zero, sold around 40-50,000.

-Pikman and Biohazard sold around 10-20,000.

I know Square Enix prices Final Fantasy in the very high league, like the equivalent of 90 bucks each, perhaps more now that the dollar is weak. I'm interested in knowing because if that's the case then WKC is definitely a success and that would mean more support for PS3 from Level 5. As long as this game sells a million or so worldwide by next year I think it's more than enough to get more support from them. Half a million would probably be enough for them to break even if prices are higher for this game in Japan (because it's a given that they will be in Europe and GB).

The PS3 will eventually become the console of choice for quality JRPGs. Lord knows a few of the ones out already are of outstanding quality. Valkyria Chronicles made by the same people who did the amazing Skies of Arcadia, they know RPGs and this is proven in VC's quality and originality. White Knight Chronicles is another quality PS3 title. What JRPGs does the 360 have? Blue Dragon, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery? All of those games garnered mediocre reviews despite them being either exclusive or timed exclusives on the 360. Square-Enix is more interested in making money than truly original RPGs anymore, and while I enjoyed Blue Dragon, there wasn't a lot to differentiate it from other JRPGs. It looked good, sure and I liked the characters but it wasn't unique. The PS3 JRPGs coming of late ARE unique and attractive to modern JRPGamers like me. JRPGs on the PS3 will be great. X-Edge is coming in March and I can't express how much I look forward to it.

While I can't find anything concrete to substantiate what you said about Skies of Arcadia 2 being on PS3, I wouldn't doubt it. The same team made Valkyria Chronicles and have never even given a hint about a 360 version. I'd love to see the next game in a series like Skies of Arcadia on PS3. Not only would it be fitting, but it would just feel right. This is a personal opinion here, but considering I've been playing my JRPGs on PS consoles for over a decade now, my 360's controller just doesn't feel right for those kinds of games.

Just for you to put things in perspective, the long forgotten Xbox 360 (in Japan) moved 108k copies of Tales of Vesperia in its first day of sales. I was expecting WKS to at least double that performance... while not getting close to big names like Dragon Quest (2 million in 1 day) or FF (2 million in 1 week) I still was expecting a much better number from this title. Being outperformed by another RPG in a console wit much much lesser marketshare is worrying... to say the least.

If MGS4 was able to sell over 650,000 units in Japan and was a non-JRPG, I think that WKC is capable of those same numbers over there, if not more.

I think that the sale numbers for WKC in Japan for the PS3 will finally make SquareEnix wake the f*ck up and get their games on the PS3. If WKC's numbers are pretty impressive, I'm pretty sure SquareEnix will be bringing Star Ocean 4 to the PS3.

Yes they were very jelous on live stream playthrough that was on Justin.tv Guy played for almost two days non stop, i was coming and going, watched game for 1 hour in totall and every single time there were xbots there trashing WKC, PS3 and Sony. I mean it was so transparent, why spend hours watching something that you dont like? They just want it on 360. To bad since sony owns IP and is publisher of course.
BTW-sorry but it wont sell 500k in 6 days, not even MGS4 did that. But we can now for sure say that it isn't a flop as someone hoped for

Probably 200-300 K by the end of Dec might be more realistic.

I saw the game streamed online on justin.tv..Its scale is just epic. I am in love with it. I cannot wait to buy it!!. The player playing it passed the game after 35 hours (excluding deaths since he has to reload from save point) rushing thru main quest only and he said he rates it 9/10 and best rpg he played in last 2 years.

a great thing for the ps3 and WKC is that although its text chat. text chat is acceptable to mmorpg gamers.

Considering the hype behind the game, I think 100K is a good debut considering that most software sales go down after their release. It's a new IP but 100K isn't anything to get excited about.

WKC to me feels like the most solid JRPG to make it on the platform so far, and in a region where quality of RPG's haven't been so great lately, I'm sure some people at SCEJ will be quite indifferent to the figure. PES, a massively popular franchise, made it's second iteration on the platform and debuted at almost double WKC's figures. But I think 100K is good. Not great, not bad. Good

If you look at it from a context, where the market has been starved of any decent quality JRPGs especially for Sony's platform which has always historically been a very strong platform for software sales for the genre, I think 100K for first day sales is good. The Japanese buy alot of games, and most consider WKC a must-buy, so if almost 200K can buy PES2009 day one, I would be expecting massive figures for WKC too.

By your reasoning, a well established title like Tales of Vesperia should have sold more than 100K on launch day for the 360, as I remember it did about 70k.

I don't remember if any of the new rpg IP's for 360 (Lost odyssey, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant etc.) did 100k, since new rpg IP's don't generally do well, so 100k for a new game on Christmas with low supplies is very good IMO.

Famitsu gave Last Remnant a very high score. The game did not sell well in Japan. White Knight Chronicles scored pretty low and has very nice first day sales. Valkyria Chronicles is also a highly rated game with poor sales. Does this mean crap does sell? Or does it mean fanboys call everything crap and this affects sales? I tend to trust Famitsu ratings, but I also believe games with lower ratings can be fun and well worth the money. Sony fanboys have all denounced Square/Enix for making "crap" games just because they are on a rival console. Is it possible that these games are actually fun even though they are not perfect?

Like I said, it's interesting. Ratings and sales do not always go hand in hand. LBP is highly rated, but doesn't have stellar sales. Maybe we shouldn't use game sales as a way to rate games. Maybe it's possible we are missing out on some good games with average ratings while we wait for the next perfect game to come out.

japan only has tw references. Famitsu for scores and leaks. media create for sales.

I didnt have high hopes for HAZE, but Famitsu gave it above average scores. then i was disappointed. I wasnt disappointed with the game as i expected it to be meh, but Famitsu made me think it was better that it was which lead to disappointment.

Even for some of us die hard tri ace fans , last remnant getting 37/40 is quite funny . Their titles are great but an acquired taste , and in this instance , the game features many major flaws , technical and not that are usually absent from the usual tri ace production . It would not be a cop out to say that it is their weakest game of yet (even if still good for tri ace fanatics like myself)

It's obvious that famitsu just gave a free pass to the game because its Square Enix ... and it's actually some disservice . There is little use tricking others and mainstream rpg players into thinking that the game is more than their standard stuff .

And here with level 5 they had very little qualms about White knight , rightfully so , since its on par as well with Level5's usual releases ... except this time with a multiplayer mode than was only announced a few month ago ... and it get such severe score ??

I find funny that someone would trust famitsu so much with so many cases like haze , and many other games getting subpar or exagerated scores

thats why i love and recommend gamefly. some games are worth renting anbd playing and beating but not buying.. thats not a bad thing.

Dark Sector was not a bad game but many reviewers dismissed it. It did a lot of things right. including making a game work on both the 360 and ps3 well.

but this is not really about sales but about scores/reviews.

and your right about good games with poor sales. many good to great jrpg's did poorly on the ps2. but there were so many that an rpg gamer had lots to choose from without reviews (or patches)

so Famitsu was a trusted review source ? Yeah right , people from the net and the west didnt use to laugh or scowl at FFXII (wich oddly i still think it kinda deserved ...) getting a perfect score and a free pass like anything square enix , nintendogs getting likewise , haze getting a high score like 34 . Hell they even gave that crap of dirge of cerberus 28/40 , and probably still finding that a bit too low for a square game , only released that review weeks after the game's release .
More accurately they waited the game sold a whooping 600k before "trashing it" in their review , and even then they couldnt go lower than 28...

Famitsu is a trusted source of news ... period

New RPG IP's don't generally do too well, I don't think there were any new IP's from the 360 that did 100k. Assuming a title will just do well just b/c it's an rpg in Japan is utterly ridiculous.

That's like saying every fps and tps will do phenomenal sales on day 1 in the US just b/c they're popular genres in N.A. If that were the case, we wouldn't have games like Haze or Soldiers of Fortune that disprove this in every way possible.

Take WKC sales as is IMO, which is relatively good for a new IP.

You do realize that Tales sold roughly about 100 K the first week (Total), and it's went on to sell around 150-160 K lifetime so far...and infact it's sold more in Japan (With it's small user base, roughly 700-800K total 360's in japan), than Tales has sold State side?

Tales State side has sold about 100 K, and what's the install base here in states for Xbox? 13-15 million?

Lost Odyssey...a new IP...sold 55 K First week in japan, about 100 K first week in US, and about 60-70 K in Europe...

It's lifetime worldwide total is about 800K.

Last Remnant a Square Enix RPG...

Sold roughly 100 K in the first week in Japan.
45 K first week in States (Dispite the user base difference)
and 25 K in Europe...

And has sold so far to date 350 K or so.

WKC has a chance to beat all these games within the first week with just Japan's numbers. (Beside Lost Odyssey, which was by far the most successful RPG...)

Actually when you look at it, there may be a lot of similarities in terms of sales of Lost Odyssey and White Knight Chronicles worldwide...

I have to agree with you, I have absolutely no clue how Famitsu scored Last Remnant so high. I don't think the 6 month delay of the PS3 version will help Square-Enix fixes the issues inherent with the use of the epic engine.

Every new game that Level-5 has released has impressed me, giving me the impression they're the new squaresoft. Square-Enix better hope Star Ocean 4, FFXII and Versus are good, or they may find their competition (Level-5) overtaking them in the future.

I agree with you, however, isn't it sony's style of business to always improve on their products through iterations during the products lifespan? thus the ps1 got the "dual shock/2 analog stick" controller after being out for a while and then getting slimmed down with the psone. also, the ps2 had constant improvements in hardware where they would rework the innards of the ps2 (thus there were different sku models...it also explains why modding a ps2 depends on what model you have). it's generally sony's way of improving on their product line that is already out. there seems to always be a newer version of their hardware that is slimmed down or have slightly different features added/taken out. (i.e. the ps2 slim, psp-1000/2000/3000, ps3 models with different hard drive sizes and less usb ports and without memory card readers)

i'm not arguing that sony has "copied" other companies of the past. why is it so wrong to copy anyway? i mean, yea they've "copied" a lot, but at least they try (keyword: try) to make improvements on it. okay, they may have copied nintendo's analog (i don't know if it's fact, but i'm going on your word on it) but didn't they try to make the anolog sticks feel more comfortable and add 2 of them while the N64 had just one? i'm pretty sure i read that sony worked with nintendo to make their next console after NES/SNES, but ditched nintendo because they didn't want to go with a newer format which was the CD-ROM...thus the playstation was born. i guess you can even argue that sony copied nintendo completely by just entering the console market. i mean, didn't every console copy the console that has existed the generation before it? i mean...just to be even more cynical, aren't we all copies of past generations due to our genetic make-up? seriously! what is so wrong about copying? i suppose copying may be very useless and stupid if it's done just for the pure sense of doing it (without making any changes) and hopefully making some sort of profit off of it. but dude...i'm sure sony, microsoft, and nintendo have all copied SOMETHING and tried to improve on that copy, right? if i'm not then please just tell me that whenever i play my ps3, that i'm actually playing a nintendo system because it has dual analog sticks on a controller that rumbles for a system that plays games which happens to be similar to previous consoles because it too plays games.

Trying to compare these sales to Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon and Last Remnant positively for the 360 vs PS3 war. Don't even try. WKC did 100,000 day 1 compared to what you're all pointing out as 100,000 1st WEEK sales for the 360 titles. Also, consider the install base. Of course first week was big for the 360, as most RPGs on any format are, but legs? NOTHING. They all crashed and burned after first week. WKC will have legs and BEING a Japanese home product, will have a bigger long-term hardware sales effect.

AND FOR THE RECORD: I'm tired of having my bubbles stolen for supporting BOTH PS3 and 360. Yes, I'm hyped for Killzone 2, WKC and Infamous. YES, I'm hyped for SO:The Last Hope, Mass Effect 2 and of course, multiplatform FFXIII gaming in the future.
