Elliot writes, "Shovel Knight Dig is a fun little rogue-lite. While it took me over ten hours to beat, I know better, more rogue-lite skilled players will not need as much time. I did not encounter bugs or errors with my time; but more than a few of what felt like unfair deaths. The chaotic gameplay of Dig makes it hard to see how great the pixel art is at times, but being able to literally slow down the gameplay or adjust my health and damage output makes it easier to appreciate the visuals. I can see myself returning to Shovel Knight Dig in a few months just to give it another spin, but the overall replay did not entice me back immediately."
VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Shovel Knight Dig isn't the best game in the ever-expanding indie series, but it's a solid addition nonetheless. It delivers a remarkable rogue-lite experience with tight controls, enjoyable bite-sized stages, enticing risk-versus-reward gameplay, and lovely graphics and sound. Only a short running time and an unsatisfactory sense of progression hold it back. It will be interesting to see where, and into which genres, Shovel Knight goes next."
CCG writes - "I’m not too fond of Shovel Knight Dig, mostly because I feel like it doesn’t take advantage of its roguelite mechanics with most of them feeling half-baked. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it’s a bad game, but it would have been a lot better if it wasn’t a roguelite. In contrast, the music is great, and the graphics are the best it’s ever been in the series. It’s also just expensive for the amount of content it offers after getting the endings; all you got to do is collect the rest of the items and achievements. A cautious recommendation for Shovel Knight fans that might be best for a sale. However, I did hear that DLC or some additional content is in the works and I’m willing to try it out if it ever comes to fruition."
Shovel Knight Dig finds our spade-wielding hero heading in another new direction, and while this trip goes downward, they manage to strike gold here as well. Addictive gameplay, gorgeous graphics and impressive levels that play host to a lot of unique challenges all get mixed together in order to create another winning action game worth checking out for fans and newcomers alike.
I wasn't feeling this game at all. I hope they don't stick to this rogue-lite version of shovel knight. I was really hoping for a continuation of the originals formula.
