Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is shaping up to be a perfect remaster - RPG Site

Square Enix calls Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion a remaster; but don’t misunderstand, this game is much closer to a full remake. Beyond the graphical improvements, the re-dubbed voices, and everything else - the game’s combat has been completely overhauled into a more traditional Action RPG. You’ve got an actual attack button, a proper dodge, a more traditional over-the-shoulder camera, and a whole slew of upgrades and changes to the User Interface.

This is a remake

KH1.5 + 2.5 are what remasters look like

CrimsonWing69587d ago

Yea, I question how this is different than The Last of Us Remake. It’s no wonder people can’t distinguish between the two when the developers can’t.

blitz0623587d ago

How a game looks compared to its base game is irrelevant to whether its a remaster or a remake. CC is a remaster and it's obvious. TLoU is also an obvious remake. It doesn't matter that TLoU didn't need one considering how great the PS4 remaster already looks, but that's besides the point

CrimsonWing69587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

@blitz0623

So what do we call the Demon’s Soul Remake on PS5 and the Shadow of the Colossus Remake on PS4 or The Last of Us Remake?

No, the very definition of a Remake is to, well Remake. This very much includes assets/geometry. This is not the PSP game upscaled with better textures.

There’s your 1:1 Remakes like what was mentioned above and your re-imagining Remakes like FF7 Remake and Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Remasters again are basically ports with optimization in texture resolution and performance like all the games that say “Reamstered” in the title.

Can you point out what makes The Last of Us Part 1 Remake different to this?

andy85587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

@biltz0623 sorry but thats nonsense. What makes TLOU a remake that doesn't make CC one? CC has actually changed more in the game compared to the former. And looks isn't true. So if Final Fantasy 6 came out as a next gen title graphically but kept the battle system it's a remaster? Remasters use original assets. We're talking an underpowered PS2 quality game turned into a low end PS4 standard game. I'm not gonna say its a full remake but it's certainly not a remaster.

blitz0623587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

TLoU is built from the ground up and CC Reunion isn't. I thought this was obvious? CC is literally the PSP game. Maybe not 100% literally, but Square just did a great job upscaling it and it's a low res PSP game to begin with. Demon's Souls was built from the ground up. SotC was built from the ground up. CC Reunion is reusing PSP assets. The other games aren't. Bluepoint didn't need anything from FromSoftware to make Demon's Souls. They themselves said they asked them for input and their blessing but that's it. Comparing CC to TLoU is laughable. Just because one looks much better than their base game doesn't mean it's on the same level. It's obvious what the technical differences are

Square themselves call it a remaster, because that's exactly what it is. The exact same game, remastered with new models and assets.

luckytrouble587d ago

I don't know how gaming has muddied this up so badly, but remaster generally means taking what's there and improving it. Like when you remaster a music track you aren't recording it again in order to rebuild it into the redone song. That's why when remaster started for gaming it was pretty universally just enhanced ports. Once you begin remaking core elements of the game, like say the entire visual presentation, you have sailed clear past remaster.

CrimsonWing69587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

@luckytrouble is exactly right.

Not just music but look at movies for crying out loud. When they say “digitally remastered” they didn’t make anything new. It’s not rocket science, literally when things are remade it’s a “Remake”. When you upscale textures and improve frame rate like you would on a PC game for better optimization and performance then it’s Remastered.

Hell, look at the PS3 version of The Last of Us, The PS4 Remaster, and The PS5 Remake of The Last of Us.

This falls literally in the same bracket as the Last of Us Part 1 (Remake). The assets are all remade.

If you really want to be pedantic the gameplay in Crisis Core Reunion isn’t the same as Crisis Core. They’ve made changes, so technically it’s not the exact same game as the PSP version.

andy85587d ago

Spot on you two, once you move past 'polishing' a game up, then it's clear its moved past remaster territory. This isn't just a polish.

NovusTerminus587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

I'm kind of settling on remasters being unchanged aside from graphics, resolution, and such.

Remakes are when you do a full rebuild, like Resident Evil 2, 3, 4, Final Fantasy VII. Gameplay, story even can be tweaked or changed entirely.

But every company seems to have a different opinion as to what a Remake and a Remaster is.

porkChop587d ago

Yeah Square Enix calls remakes remasters, and they call reimaginings remakes. It's weird and confusing.

Sorry but that isn't upscaling it's a completely different model.

Square calling this a remaster is tempering expectations. It is a ok graphic upgrade. Which is expected as it has to run on a Switch.

They would call it a remake if it looked like FF7R. Or high end Ps4 graphics.

Knightofelemia587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

Still my favorite entry next to FF7 always wanted it to come to console and soon I will enjoy it again. I just hope Square does something with Xenogears next.

Is it a troll comparison? A PSP game vs PS5?

RaidenBlack67d ago

How well the crisis core still stacks up to the next gen Remake ~ that's the point of the remake
And as Digital Foundry pointed out after playing the demo, the Rebirth has flaws and is not much an upgrade from Integrade and still has texture problems

RaidenBlack67d ago

* that's the point of the comparison

Babadook766d ago (Edited 66d ago )

Remake had the same type of texture flaws (rare ones at that) as this game and I disagree with DF in both cases. Rebirth is easily the best example of RPG graphics in 2024 just like Remake was in 2020.

Snookies1266d ago

Rebirth not looking much better than Integrade is perfectly acceptable. Considering it's now open world where the Remake was completely linear. Remake still looks amazing to this day, and Rebirth looks even better.

They did do an amazing job on Reunion though. Never thought I'd see the day we'd get a return of Crisis Core, lol.

fsfsxii66d ago

Digital foundry always nitpicks ps5 games, but will look the other way when it comes to literally anything nintendo. They could put out a 240p game and DF would still praise it.

it's Crisis Core Reunion on PS5. I don't think anyone is expecting the graphics to be compared, but the design and to compare the same scenes between the two games.

Knightofelemia67d ago

A cleaned up PSP version vs a game built for the PS5 really? I can see the Tomb Raider trilogy remaster vs the PS1 versions. But using this is like night and day.

northpaws67d ago

Of course rebirth looks much better... but I am surprised how good crisis core reunion looks too, I have never played that one.

RaidenBlack67d ago

Thats the point of the comparison

Soy67d ago

IMO shows how great of a job they did with Crisis Core to bring it up to the Remake's standards/style.

MeteorPanda66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

I really enjoyed Crisis core remaster - the only thing l hated was the easy to miss side quests. like legit if you didnt run out and talk to a woman on your first HQ visit you missed on the optional final boss cause no 100%. like cmon. let us replay chapters to get the content.

Which is why lm glad they took that feedback and confirmed that nothings missable or timelocked in rebirth.
