PS5 1200 Series Teardown Shows Significant Differences, Console Draws Less Power Now

Sony has just released a new model of the PS5 making it the second revision since the launch of the PS5.

The energy usage compared to other consoles was already huge in standby mode. Looks like that differential just grew even more favourable for PS5.

Those standby comparisons were shocking. PS5 being cheaper to run is a big deal right now with the energy prices being so crazy - and worsening soon. Something's got to give, it's ridiculous.

Neonridr1006d ago

I'm not sure if you are talking about standby numbers, for example the Series X draws 0.5W in standby mode. There's a different mode called instant on which is 13W, but the console is not actually shut down but in a ready to play state.

SullysCigar1006d ago (Edited 1006d ago )

Thanks, yes, I meant instant on. That's was how series x was shipped, the default setting for standy mode, until a couple of months ago. 0.5W is the draw for energy saver mode, according to the article I was referring to.

Smh, just seen my first paragraph above was a word soup due to a last second edit. I meant to imply the PS5 uses LESS power by comparison and that this new model will LESSEN that even further. I failed in that endeavour lol

Neonridr1006d ago

@SullysCigar - no worries, your point still stands, using less power is still always appreciated.

neutralgamer19921006d ago

I am just going to wait for PS5 slim because after this revision slim is happening soon

I don't think pro is coming till holiday 2024 at the earliest

Kakashi Hatake1006d ago

It's not even 2 years old yet. Maybe next year. Why not just wait for PS6? Tomorrow isn't promised.

neutralgamer19921005d ago

that's true hehe

once GOW comes out i will get it since that's one of my most awaited games

TheKingKratos1005d ago (Edited 1005d ago )

I doubt there is going to be pro version or slim version of ps5 .... The system is already pretty rare to find

I bought Ps5 by pure luck

Orchard1005d ago (Edited 1005d ago )

I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone buy or not buy a console because of its energy use.

If the energy delta is going to have such a big impact on your financials - you probably aren’t going to be / shouldn’t be buying a $500 luxury electronic and $70 games.

PS5 having a higher retail price is likely to impact consumer opinion more than energy use. One is widely advertised and visible on every shelve / online store - the other is basically not visible to most consumers.

trilon5401005d ago

You're right. It's been 2 years and I still can't buy one for $499.99.

EvertonFC1005d ago

Colin Moriarty mentioned on his last channel video the exact same regarding gamers moaning about an extra £10 for games.
If you can't afford an extra £10 you're in the wrong the hobby

IanTH1005d ago (Edited 1005d ago )

@EvertonFC

I don't buy his argument. Just because you *can* afford to spend more doesn't mean you *should* happily do so. The companies doing it most are the ones who are most financially secure, who have billions of dollars. They're the ones giving guys like Bobby Kotick billions in personal wealth. Game prices were clearly fine, as seen by the overstuffed profit lines many companies were showing. And their whole excuse for putting micro & macro transactions in was because $60 was too cheap to be sustainable. They've raised the price, so I guess they can take the MTXs out of their $70 games now, right? They haven't?! Weird...

Indies, by and large the most financially vulnerable, tend to still have low prices, go figure.

Crows901005d ago

Well. I was with you up until the $70 games thing. You can have that concern and not have to pay $70.

Haven't bought a single game at 70 or 60 since I lived with my parents.

Orchard1005d ago (Edited 1005d ago )

@trilon540 They're up on PS Direct right now at MSRP, no queue:

Hope you see this in time.

Really, being 5$ cheaper to run per year is a big deal 🤣 maybe you shouldn't be spending money on stuff like video games if power consumption is a concern for you.

MagUk1005d ago

When I set up my series x it asked what I would prefer instant on or energy saving. And that was when they were first shipped.

I wonder if Sony will enable an energy saver mode for PS5 like Series did? I use Energy saver now on my series consoles as it is still quicker than cold boot but not as quick as standby (instant on). on PS5 there is really only rest mode (aka standby) and full power off. I generally use full power off because the PS5 is a quick booter as well. Energy saver would be that nice middle ground between full off and standby.

If Sony is taking requests... I'd love for them to add a press and hold the PS button on the controller to bring up a quick shutdown option. You get used to it on one platform and wish it was on others as well.

FinalFantasyFanatic1005d ago (Edited 1005d ago )

I don't really see much of a point to instant on myself, with how fast SSDs are, there's no reason to not turn it off when you're done playing, you're not waiting that much longer for the machine to fully boot up.

I know the PS button allowed for a quick shutdown on the PS4, don't know if the PS5 does that or not.

darthv721005d ago

It does not. You have a press and slide all the way right to get to power options. Press and hold was so much quicker.

theindiearmy1005d ago

A lot of people don't have fast Internet and want games and updates to download while not playing.

Zhipp1005d ago

@Everton
Xbox now downloads and installs updates in energy saver mode. Don't ask me how that works, but as soon as they added that functionality I enabled it and never looked back.

FinalFantasyFanatic1004d ago

@EvertonFC @theindiearmy,

Fair enough, but you don't get updates/game downloads all the time though, I don't leave the PS4 in rest mode very often unless I'm download/updating a game. And the Switch is on sleep mode most of the time just because it does that when it receives power (my PC and video game consoles are all plugged into the same power board, so one power point turns them all on).

EvertonFC1005d ago

Just leave it on standby, does all you're updates and pre game download stuff etc

Goozex1005d ago

Series s draws more energy than x and ps5 combined!

Orchard1006d ago

So you can break even over time on the 10% price increase due to the lower energy usage, awesome! 😋

SierraGuy1006d ago

The maths wasn't your strong point was it?

Orchard1006d ago

No idea what you’re talking about. But okay 👌

this is painful to watch

12% better power efficiency & just as quiet as previous models, looks to have better cooling around SSD area
