Eyeing the Future: Top 5 PS3 Games of 2009

Greedy Raven writes, "2008 has been a good year for PlayStation 3 owners. We saw the release of big time exclusives such as Resistance 2 , LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4. Sony also showed us that there is still a good reason to invest in the PS3 even though big names such as Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy have gone multi-platform. 2009 looks to be another big year for the PlayStation. With the release of PlayStation Home, the implementation of the new trophy system and another big year of games, the PS3 has its eye set on the future. Here is a countdown of the top 5 PS3 exclusive games that will be released in the coming year..."

Yes, you must buy one immediately. I enjoy mine immensely, though it is used more for Blue-Ray than gaming at the moment. However this list of games tells me that things will be changing next year.

bgrundman5970d ago

It looks like you may have to. I know I am considering it, if nothing else than for the blu-ray player.

MURKERR5970d ago

..but your gaming life will be better just for the exclusives

CrAppleton5970d ago

unfortunately there is still a lack of gaming to be had on the PS3, but it is none the less worth the money.. and there is a great amount of good games coming

CrAppleton5970d ago

true.. you need some of these exclusives.. that's why it's best to own all three systems =)

killyourfm5970d ago

Yep Jimmy, I'd say it's getting damn near being a must-own at this point. you just can't find that much tech crammed into a box for the same price.

SL1M DADDY5970d ago

Some folks just can't live down the silliest of stereotypes.

cellypower5970d ago

Thats so untrue its not even funny!

Why o why5970d ago

the growing list of 360 only to 360 and ps3 owning guys like kigmal and elementX. There are many more its just those 2 spring to mind

xwabbit5970d ago

You haven't bought one and you have that many bubbles wth! ??

Traveler5970d ago

I am a multi-console owner and I definitely recommend you buy the PS3. It really is a fabulous game console and has a nice selection of great games. Next year looks even better.

cmrbe5970d ago

On weather must have PS titles are already out that you want to play. Most of my friends are waiting for GT5 before the migrate.

The price of the PS3 will go down in the future so you might want to wait for that if price is an issue.

For me i bought the PS3 for MGS4. The greatest game i have ever played. Watching Dark Knight on blu ray is a blast as well and recomended if you have a HD TV.

In the end, i say trust you instincts. If you buy it now you will enjoy alot of stuff on the PS3 right now but if you wait. The PS3 will get even better in time. Its your choice.

house5970d ago

as much as i think he did an over all great job he should have made a top ten with games like mag h.r white knight gt5 flower and other great games, but i do disagree with l.p god of war is not over rated its a great game that all gamers must play
like i said gamers

N4360G5970d ago

LOL yes yo do.It's a great console.Next year is looking good for SONY and the PS3.

Stubacca5969d ago

You mean you aint played LBP and MGS4 yet???

CrAppleton5970d ago

Killzone 2 I can not wait!!

bgrundman5970d ago

It looks almost as pretty as that target render from 3 years ago...

ammonator5970d ago

Personally I'm most excited for Uncharted 2. I have only played through a couple levels of Uncharted, but love it so far!

prowiew5970d ago

Indeed!. Killzone and god of war for me.
Anyway. Is it truth that white knight chornicles got a mediocre review from famitsu?

Traveler5970d ago

Yes, it's true that White Knight Chronicles received a mediocre review score from Famitsu, and their reviews are usually very favorable towards RPGs, but I am curious to see what gaming sources from other parts of the world say about the game.

Anyway, I have to agree with ammonator above me, I am most looking forward to Uncharted 2. Killzone 2 looks awesome and I am a huge God of War fan, but Uncharted is one of the freshest and best games I have played in a long time. So, Uncharted 2 is probably my most anticipated game.

Playstation HOME will have NO effect on sales, userbase, nothing. HOME was 3 years of wasted effort and resources by SONY. It's a shame - because I AM a Sony Fanboy and I was really expecting more.

As for God of War 3, I'm guessing that's the PS3's system seller of 2009.

bgrundman5970d ago

that is if it actually makes it out in 2009

CrAppleton5970d ago

ouch.. damn man.. just... ouch

bgrundman5970d ago

Home is a huge disappointment, but I have a feeling it will only get better with time.

Chapulin5970d ago

In my opinion I think that it will have an effect on sales once the full version comes out. I want my TV and arcades in my apartment!!!

Rofflecopter5970d ago

It's not a beta in terms of there being a full version to come out. Its a beta in terms of being constantly updated and tweaked for all eternity. This is the open beta, which is where it will stay, and it was just released. Over time, more and more will be added, but it do not believe it will be a system seller. It's not like anyone in the general population knows it even exists...

bgrundman5970d ago

Which line-up is better the 360 or PS3 in 2009?

killyourfm5970d ago

Because we actually no much less about the 360 lineup in 2009.

CrAppleton5970d ago

Well that's true.. I'll give you that one.. this battle is for another day

bgrundman5970d ago

The 360 lineup is definately more mysterious, but I have a feeling that they may have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Darkseider5970d ago

Exclusives alone the PS3 is light years ahead of what the XBox 360 has to offer in 2009, nevermind the multiplats.

LonewolfXIII5969d ago

I honestly dont know whats coming out on the 360 in 09 thats exclusive... sooo Im gonna go with PS3

Stubacca5969d ago

The PS3. For Killzone and GOW3 alone.

But I'm sure the 360 aint out yet and will fight tooth and nail for exclusives and exclusive content in 2009.

Does the Wii even compete here?

CrAppleton5970d ago

It HAS to.. seeing how it's the leading system in the console wars right now

killyourfm5970d ago

The Wii isn't even IN the same field to worry about competing, you know? So it's probably not a discussion worth pursuing.

ammonator5970d ago

Nope! This is the Big Boys field. Little boys play on a different court!

Stubacca5969d ago

Saying the wii competes is like saying the PS2, DS and PSP competes, which they don't. Like KillYourFm said, it aint in the same field.

However, I'd love a new Starfox game to come out next year. Or some more titles for adults who have a wii for the kids.

50 Best PS3 Games of All Time

The PlayStation 3 is Sony’s most interesting home console ever, but what’s most interesting of all is trying to nail down the very best games on a console with hundreds of incredible games. Let’s give it a shot.

Personally, I'd rank Pacific Rift in my top 10. It's the best of the series.

badz14955d ago

We desperately need Motorstorm back. Evolution is no more though and this makes me sad

Cacabunga55d ago

Sly Thieves in Time
Stay the Party
Portal 2
Dj Hero
Demon’s Souls
God of war Ascension

rudero55d ago

2 of those games got railed through the “gaming media” during release.
Sly and god of war.
Both of which were fantastic games.

Cacabunga54d ago

Ascension is VERY underrated. Remake please!

Venoxn4g55d ago

Decent list.. I would put the Castle Crashers as well..

1Victor55d ago

Yes it’s a decent list of popular games with a heavy hand on FPS and no Warhawk or Starhawk 2 of the best games (not sale wise) on ps3.
I would buy a Starhawk again even if it didn’t have a graphics upgrade hell I would even take a new one with micro transactions 😱🤯

Profchaos55d ago

I've noticed a recent nostalgia for the PS3 and I don't get it for me it's been my least favourite generation to date and I've been gaming since the NES I just feel like the ambition of the developers outweighed the capabilities of the consoles so I remember lots of games running in the lower end of 20fps range and I remember for the first time ever actually disliking the duelshock 3 and it's curved triggers

Sure there were some standouts and great games but that's the only gen I switched entirely to PC gaming

darthv7255d ago

Maybe the recent nostalgia is because pretty much all of its games are trapped on that console. People want to play them on more modern hardware. hell... if XB can do it then so can Sony. there are competent emulators out there that can run on PS4/5 hardware but Sony just wont let them become official... why is that?

If we are talking least favorite generations (personally) then this one is certainly mine. i had more fun playing 8th, 7th and 6th gen stuff than 9th. And it isnt like i dont have access to do so... the heavy hitters just havent shown up anywhere close to those previous gens. The few here and there just doesnt cut it compared to the likes of constant good games that showed up in 6th, 7th and 8th gen. hell.... I'll even throw in 5th gen has been better than this one.

Profchaos55d ago

I tend to agree there's lots of amazing games locked to the PS3 like GTA IV or mgs 4 but then again my issue was never with the content the PS3 had but rather it's performance many other people have said the PS3 felt like it couldn't walk and chew bubblegum at the same time using PSN and downloading a game could take a few minutes to just start a download.

I typically don't worry all that much about performance I've never had a problem with games that run at 30 but games like crysis 2, Skyrim are good examples where the performance was so unstable you would never even touch the top of the frame cap and the hitching was worse than say Goldeneye on the n64

I think emulation is more than possible on the ps5 though it's just that Sony has no incentive to rush it's development it will likely be a ps6 feature if it ever happens at all.

But yeah the 9th gen has been so bad from a content perspective thats a given I see constant articles where people are frequently expressing their disappointment around the industry as a whole right now to much live service competition that sinks longstanding studios and consumes Devs time less ambition and games cost so much to make they have to play it safe.

The 5th gen was easily better than the 9th we had some all time greats crash, Spyro, Tony hawk, mgs, Mario,64, Goldeneye, Mario kart 64 the list goes on. The 5th gave us a new dimension and I remember being blown away by how much more open gaming had become the 4th gen with the mega drive and SNES was great and very easy to still revisit some of the greatest games of all time came out like earthbound, secret of mana, sonic , Mario world etc but saving our games was still not a standard function or a given so gaming was still evolving but it was very impressive to see some of the tricks Devs used like dithering to give us new experiences those earlier gens limitations bred innovation.

Michiel198955d ago

if XB can do it so can sony? I didn't know xbox had a cell processor in their older consoles, that's the reason why ps3 was so cool, but also the reason why games are hostage there and no, xbox did nothing similar even though their backward compatbility is good, they always had a similar architecture to their consoles.

darthv7254d ago

Sorry Michael... I guess you missed the obvious part where i said there are already emulators out that do this. and that is what XB is doing... emulators for OG and 360 games. Its why the full slate is not BC on XBO/Series.

The list is missing Folklore.

Uncharted 2 Is the Most Important PlayStation Exclusive of All Time

In a list of games that defined the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would certainly be one of the top contenders. The blockbuster sequel to 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune not only received critical acclaim and became a massive hit for Sony’s third console when it was released 15 years ago on October 13th, 2009, but it also cemented Naughty Dog’s future as a developer of cinematic, story-driven action-adventure games as opposed to its history of colorful platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter from previous PlayStation generations. To this day, Uncharted 2 stands as one of the PS3’s best exclusives and one of the most important PlayStation games of all time.

gold_drake171d ago

it was pretty good. especially the multiplayer

KyRo171d ago

I loved this era on multiplayer games from Sony. People used to call the modes tacked on multiplayer but they were enjoyable. I loved Factions even more. I'm Still gutted that the second one isn't coming out.

-Foxtrot171d ago

Yeah, that one game where it not only has an amazing single player but the multiplayer was also just as good.

A fresh a breath air with it's more "skill focused, less is more" multiplayer in a time during COD fever where every other game with online was trying to be like it.

Shame NaughtyDog eventually did do COD like things with Uncharted 3 and 4, they ruined what made the original so good. It become an over the top arcade fest in the end.

Inverno171d ago

Ironic cause the MP was basically Halo, and Bungie helped on the technical side of things too. MP was more simple back then, I've said this before but I played U2 MP religiously. I sucked at it like you have no idea, but mah gawd did I have so much fun. Can't find an MP game that hooked me like U2s these days. Then Factions came along and while it had its problem I found new religion with it. Agh damn it why did they cancel Factions 2 bruhh.

gold_drake171d ago

i had so much fun too, played almost every night with mates or cousins baha

Relientk77171d ago

It is for sure my favorite game in the series. It's such a blast to play. The train levels still hold up and are fun as hell as well as the entire game.

RaidenBlack171d ago (Edited 171d ago )

Still remember the first gameplay video ... shooting the chasing truck and then the beautiful visuals & details whilst traversing the dilapidated Nepal streets ... perfection
Too bad Sony never ported the trilogy to PC ...

RaiderNation171d ago

I would argue it's God of War.

darthv72171d ago

I'll say, the PS3 really did sequels better than people give it credit for. Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Infamous 2... all were better than their initial offerings and still hold up to this day.
