Why It'll Take Years for PS Plus to Catch Up to Xbox Game Pass

So, who are the other 40-30%? I seriously don't think this is the win you are looking for. None of the other major players in the gaming industry have a subscription service like GP, I highly doubt T2, Sony, Valve, Nintendo, Ubisoft and others are interested. EA is honestly the closest. If there are 25M or let's say 27M GP subscribers and that makes up 60-70% of the industry, that should show you that isn't a lot and the market is small.

I am also more than confident Sony is more than capable of doing day 1, they have done so with some AA games, however they don't have the cash to burn like Xbox in hopes it becomes successful. I personally do not see GP ever reaching the numbers of Netflix, Disney+ or Spotify, so it will be interesting to see how many subscribers GP needs to be profitable and if MS would keep going if it doesn't.

I have PS Extra and Gamepass and I would say Gamepass does edge itself ahead of PS Extra but Sony has put up a solid start so far all things considered. Both have some great games on there but Gamepass has quite a few newer releases. The downside is there's a lot of filler on both services of you're not massively into some indie games.

I also find whilst gamepass has newer titles, the titles available on Gamepass are not in the same league as Sony first party titles if we're being honest.

I think we are talking about different things. My point was mainly that there's no evidence that MS are telling their studios to churn out half finished games every six months to fill a game pass quota. Everything announced so far has been longterm projects. Not saying that will stay the same in future but right now, MS are making AAA games and releasing them day one on Game Pass with largely free post-release content.

It isn't really true at all on the multiplayer comment and speculative at best on MTX. They are there of course but "ample evidence" is hyperbole at this point.

Grounded - ??? - I haven't played but I believe it's a multiplayer focused F2P but with no MTX. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They just published a game called As Dusk Falls - a single player story-driven game.
Next up: Starfield. A single-player story-driven game. No information (as far as I know?) on MTX. I imagine it will have the creators club but existed before Game Pass, not a product of it.
Redfall: Multiplayer focused game. No information available on MTX or if it's a F2P game as far as I'm aware

Next year and beyond the difference is really going to shine through. Eventually Sony will have to adopt some kind of approach to adding newer games. You severely underestimate the power of that day one release schedule for all first party games.

Sure you may not like Halo or any of the Xbox exclusives that are on there but there are exclusive games on there and they are great. Forza Horizon 5 is great Halo is great. Just because you don't personally like those doesn't mean they aren't great games. Halo gets a lot of flack but it's mostly just because people want more of it because it's a great game. Also stuff like Psychonauts 2, Ori games, etc are on there. There's also millions of gamers that didn't buy or play an Xbox One and pretty much all of those Xbox One exclusives are on there. There really are some gems stuff like Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Rare Replay, Sea of Thieves, all the Gears and Halo games, etc.

Another thing you're overlooking is the Discovery Factor. There are new games coming to the pass on an almost weekly basis. Stuff that is just coming out. It's not all first party stuff that's day one. There are all these games that a lot of people wouldn't take a second look at that are finding success because of the subscription. If you don't play it you wouldn't know.

I subscribe to both I think they're both great services in their own right. But Game pass just has a leg up because they've been around longer. The quest system things of that nature the rewards all of that stuff that Sony has not implemented into PS plus yet are also differentiators. But the big deal in the coming year and beyond will be when all of the big games they have been working on finally come out.

I'm particularly stoked for Redfall and Starfield and Big Time releases like that are included on day one! I've already subscribed for the next several years so the fact that I don't have to pay $60 to $70 per game for all these big games that are coming is huge for the millions of gamers that have subscribed. And there's going to be a lot more people subscribing once the Activision Blizzard merger goes through!

Why does SONY have to copy gamepass? They sell way more games than Xbox. Third party games sell way more on playstation. Elden Ring sold 40% on playstation vs 16% on xbox and 44% on pc. Xbox is 10 years behind PlayStation when it comes to quality of games. I am a GP user who's signed up for next 34-35 months and there has been anything good on it in a while. Most of the times we are playing backwards compatible games on XSX

For as much praise as cult like fanboys give to these corporations I wish the same people would be up in arms about not getting great games but instead on social media they are praising Phil Spencer around the clock

It attracts customers using low cost services then makes money on add ons etc. They make more money off the add ons overall as more the money saved on game purchases is reallocated to add ons that have ridiculous profit margins. GP is obviously a threat to Sony no matter your spin. I like PS exclusives just like the next man, but I also like MS exclusives, which they do have as well. It just seems like the only argument people have in defense of Sony is...they have exclusives! guess what? so do all of the big 3 and in that case, it's a matter of preference, not everyone is into long-drawn-out similar cinematic Sony games, by the way, many are starting to pop up on PC as well. When you look at other features, services, price of games, community, BC, GP attractive price with the ability to play on PC, tablets, web browsers, and cell phones, and future prospects from recent acquisitions, its not impossible to see why some may like Xbox or GP as a better option.

What xbox has to offers pales in comparison to what we have already seen from PS. We haven’t even seen what will be announced for 2023-2024 other than Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and from Square, Forspoken, FF 16 and FF7 Rebirth etc.

I need to see Xbox offer more they have already to see them as a viable threat. Yes, in terms of GP vs PS plus, that could be a different story entirely. Without day and date Sony still has more subscribers. Sony will also likely be adding much more to PS extra/premium over the coming months including day 1 AA games.

I think there is great value on both sides, but I would still say Sony is keeping a close eye on this deal and do have legitimate concerns when it comes to service vs service.

As long as PS churns out great games and they still sell like they have been, their business model won’t change much, like Nintendo. But they will offer more on their service to appease those kind of gamers and will be porting games more often to PC.

That is all a win win for Xbox and PS in my eyes. But Sony will likely remain dominant in the market next to Nintendo. Where they could possibly lose is in services unless PS Plus grows with much more content. (And atm Sony still has the lead).

So when people say xbox gamepass is better because of day 1 exclusives...first thats not a good sign and second those exclusives need to be desirbale. IF playstation extra will offer all playstation exclusives 6+ months after release thats so much better than what gamepass has in store. Sure gamepass will offer quick access to now bought IP like elder scrolls and starfield BUT thats not actually good for those games.

IF you dont understand this let me do some simple math.
Assume there are 30 million gamepass subscribers. In the month of starfields release those 30 million ALL pay $10 to access that game. Thats 300 million dollars for Starfield...although we know the $10 dont all go to starfield so Im being very generous. ON the other hand assume maybe 10 million people would buy Starfield at $60 in the same month of its release. That would make starfield 600 million dollars and ALL of it would go to starfield.

Do you see the problem here? Gamepass day 1 games from their exclusive dev teams only means that if they dont bring in the subscribers to make up for it then those studios will be downsized. Eventually disbanded or mishandled like so many Microsoft studios in the past. You need money to run a business and no business runs on a net loss.

Oh and gamepass with less features is more expensive than ps extra.

The reason neither Playstation or Nintendo needs to offer their 1st party games on any service because their games sell extremely well. Don't forget the reason Xbox had to move to Gamepass to try to stay relevant being in 3rd place, with entries of Gears, Halo etc dropping to their lowest series sales.

Spiderman, Uncharted, Pokemon, Smash, Mario and flagship titles do so well it would be a huge loss to lose their day 1 sales, can the same be said for Halo, Gears, Forza? Nope, sales don't even compare.

Both companies have had a slow start, and with MS buying like 20 studios a few years ago, it takes time for them to make games (yes, games take 4 or 5 years). Yeah sony only released Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, SPiderman Miles Morales, Demons Souls Awesome Remake, Returnal, Tlou2, Ghost of Tsuhima and Horizon Forbidden West. I am afraid to say that I tend to find this is the case too. Because I buy games I want on PS5 I pretty much go on Gamepass once a month to quickly check what's been added before going back to PS5 to play the games I have bought.

The first 3 months I had my Series X were amazing as I played through maybe 12 games I was interested in but once I had worked through those ir is kinda slim pickings for the most part.

Not true, PlayStation Plus is not starting from zero. It has an already existing subscription base of nearby 50 million users.

And from what I can tell, the new tiers have been extremely popular with people getting long term subscriptions since it's at a significant discount.

The only thing the service needs to do is maintain a compelling list of games.

Dude, PS+ has already caught up. The lowest tier of PS+ is only $5/month (less with deals) and consistently outclassed Games with Gold. The Extra tier has some of the best games ever made such as Ghost of Tsushima and started with day 1 releases of gems like Stray. Loving it.

You can market xbox and gamepass as much as you want but to me and many more they can’t correct the mistakes of the past 10+ years . Too many hopes promises and lies and not much to show for it but a rental service for mostly old games with filler and the hope for a good first party game someday . Sounds like pay to wait for E3 to me . They had you guys waiting for E3 without paying now they don’t .

The best they could get from me someday is buying a used console at the end of gen and buying some used games but they haven’t had anything really worth buying since midway through 360 nothing last gen and nothing the first 2-3 years this gen .

AAA Hellblade doesn’t interest me much I thought it was better as an AA game and fit that mold but maybe that would be one. I know it will be hyped and scored as best thing ever like Deathloop was but is it really good ? Deathloop wasn’t for sure especially compared to the scores .
Perfect Dark is in development hell already so nope.
Everwild was a concept and had no direction at all when it was announced because they had to make it look like they had more than what was reality and we have heard nothing since not a peep. Can’t think of much else they mentioned worth noting .
They are great at marketing to a certain large gullible segment for sure .
It’s almost like a cult now as we hear the games are coming but Gamepass is cheap and I get new free games someday Someday!!!

I have GamePass and I have premium plus. GP is miles ahead of Premium plus. Both have fillers sure but plus is also filled with PS3 games that can only be streamed and from my experiences with them (like Castlevania LoS2) they are unplayable. I have Fiber internet which is extremely fast and still those ps3 games are terrible to stream. That alone devalues premium plus for me. I already own all Sony exclusives (I mean who wouldn’t if you have a PS right?) so the exclusives on plus do not appeal to me. GP is definitely the superior service and once MS starts rolling out their exclusives next year it will advance the gap even further. Sony themselves are afraid of GamePass yet you fanboys STILL make excuses….

I think Sony sees now that Xbox players hand over money for next to nothing, and, in contrast, some Sony fans are complaining about their AAA exclusives going up to $70 this gen (which, at twice a year, is about the same cost of $10 a month more for Game Pass; and Game Pass doesn’t even need to produce an exclusive that year or even the next: Xbots are happy with whatever is on the spoon being shoved down their throat that year.).

Sony needs a similar profit margin opportunity, but they might be out of luck there since they spoiled their fans with AAA exclusives instead of making them think they didn’t need them, like SOMe COMPANIES.

Yes, there’s definitely an axe to grind when loyal customers can no longer expect quality titles on any kind of regular basis out of their platform creators. We’ve spent far too much money and waited far too long for what?…more services? Where are the medium defining games? It’s like they completely quit trying to compete and went out and bought a whole new roster just to say they have something, but it’ll be another 2-4 years before you see any of it. So why release a new console with nothing to show for over a year and then a huge gap following immediately?
Doesn’t really inspire a lot of confidence or show any actual passion and talent. I say this having owned every gen of Xbox to date, including (2) series X. I’m still waiting to be impressed, and old indie games and multi plats aren’t gonna do it. I’m not looking for bargains, I’m looking for can’t be missed experiences.

I owned every Xbox as well, including an XsX. I chose the OG Xbox over the famed ps2, and I have no regrets there.

So, with that said:
1) Tell me ONE game that you can only play on XsX, just a single attempt by the world-renowned M$ to push the medium with their brand new “stronger” hardware.

My ps5 has Demon Souls, R&C, Returnal, and a ton of games that make excellent use of the Dualsense features, which I LOVE (HLL, R6, GoT, Death Stranding, Sifu, Spider-Man, and many more)

What medium-pushing experiences were curated for my XsX?

2) Calling Xbox diehard loyalists that never acknowledge the Xbone/XsX game drought outload “Xbots” is not offensive because it fits. I loved Halo 1-3, and I payed for Live for decades. I remember the good days, so I refuse to keep telling myself “the games are coming” like a robot….err… Xbot.

Promises were not fulfilled, and Xbots forget. I don’t forget.

3) Sony games that come to PC arrive ~5 years later, well after they’ve moved Sony consoles through exclusivity, so that devs can recoup more profits from their work. I’m totally okay with that, and I also totally am unwilling to wait 5 years for Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, or LoU3.

Xbots don’t seem to mind waiting, so I get it if you’d rather play them all on pc in 5 years instead. Totally your call.

Microsoft already has tens of billions invested in those massive Azure server farms all over the world. Not only is Sony unable to afford that type of investment, they don't feel it's necessary.
They're probably right. At least until they have a good "ecosystem" that would make that upfront investment.

Umm. Why is it that journos keep promoting gamepass as some kind of holy grail? Its not that good at all. Its just a cheap subscription service. No different than ps extra. Just with less features and more expensive. PS extra gives you tons more value than basic gamepass.

Exclusives day 1 mean nothing if theyre not any good. And even if they are good it doesnt magically make the dozens of playstation exclusives on the service void. Gamepass is still playing catch up to psnow (now called ps extra). While gamepass touts exclusives day 1, ps extra actually has many worthwhile exclusives that have actually released.

The recent fact of Sony being afraid of gamepass is the reason the defense force is out so hard.

It hurts and they are afraid, just as Sony is worried as well. Sony themselves said MS is 60-70% of gaming sub services. Then there is the whole blocking games on GP, then there is the attempt to stop the A/B acquisition, they are most certainly afraid and scrambling.

Then we get to the awful moves they have been making, $70 games, 10 live service games in development. We can then move on to them playing catch up with an inferior sub service, weak B/C, late with VRR, late with 1440p support,.

Then we can move on to the Sony only fans, GP sucks, but PS+ is good...Sony believes in generations and then puts out tons of cross platform games, all MS games are on PC anyway, yet Sony is now pushing PC games hard now.
