PS5 is doing good at 7.1m units ahead of the PS3, but still behind the PS4 by 2.8m for the same time frame. Looking at other articles related to sales comparisons. Series is 2.6m ahead of the XBO and just over 5m ahead of the 360 for the same 20 month time frame.

And now for some generational comparisons...
The gap for PS3/360 was around 3.4m with 360 20th month was June 07 and PS3 June 08
The gap for PS4/XBO was around 11m with both of their 20 month marks in June 15
The gap for PS5/Series is around 5.5m with both of their 20 month marks in June 22

no doubt if there weren't the supply constraints I'm sure the PS5 would be ahead of the PS4 right now. Demand and popularity is there for sure.

MadLad630d ago

Isn't that their fault for not putting out the money to insure they have the parts needed to make systems for supply to demand?

Sony could have done a lot of things to increase sales. They didn't do that. So they deserve the situation they're in.

“Could’ve done a lot of things”

Like what? How could’ve Sony overcame historical supply chain shortages during a historic global pandemic, besides by being a billion dollar company like M$ who can afford billon dollar solutions?

M$ didn’t properly invest in first-party game support for a decade: they don’t deserve their fan base.

@MadLad - hard to predict what we experienced from 2020-2022. World is still feeling the effects and playing catchup as a result.

@MadlLad clearly you have no idea how bad supply chain is and was in the semiconductor space.
I work in automation solutions and we left a lot of money on the table because we can’t get simple lcd meters and boards .

We sent thousands of units without LCD’s to the customer because they can’t get enough until Winter . That started in February .
These are relatively simple parts in comparison to what Sony needs and those high end chips boards etc are even in greater demand .
50+ billion dollar company I work for and the leader in their space and they can not get simple electronics for 6-8 months .
They’ve done everything they can and still had to make a lot of customers either wait or get a partial product without meters but most have to wait .
They had to cut some countries out all together and focused on the biggest money makers mostly the US .
They were projecting a 300 million deficit on their revenue only because of the supply chain in semiconductors .
This is a problem for all BIG companies and nothing Sony could have projected to make up for it.

Fabricators can only make so many chips a month .They were shut down for a good amount of time and when they were back up it was at limited capacity .
Even if you preordered millions of chips and I’m sure they did , the Fabs had to catch up and clearly won’t be able to until starting next year sometime . You can give them a billion dollars but that doesn’t make the fab run any faster .

All really pointless in the big picture. Console sales used to be a measuring point of userbase. But today we don't need to look at console sales for userbase. Sony has stated they have approximately 102 million active userbase in their last report. Microsoft showed a 100+ million active userbase January of 2021. So what we see is that with more consoles sold Sony is really only even now with Microsoft in terms of 'active' user base where in the past they were more than double. Active user base determines market you are trying to sell games and make money off of.

Petebloodyonion630d ago

I'm always wondering why the fascination with this # of consoles sold versus... type of article.
Like we know that PS5 is doing well and it's hard to find etc. etc. etc. So why does it matter so much to know if they sold more compared to PS4, PS3, Xbox, Wii, Switch?

darthv72630d ago

It's neat to see the changing times of something that was vs something that is.

sagapo630d ago (Edited 630d ago )

Agreed. Comparing current gen consoles (Sony/MS/Nintendo) is one thing but comparing with previous gen’s seems kinda pointless to me as well. Times and situations are different with each gen imo.

gold_drake629d ago

its good to see the differences in comparison but some make it a sport and chat shit imo.

Aloymetal630d ago

PS5 doing great even with the chip issue. No doubt though it will reach the $100mil mark like the PS1, PS2 & PS4 did.

CaptainHenry916629d ago

I believe it will. I doubt the Series X/S will get to 100 million though

Let see the subscription to Gamepass.... 🤔

Terry_B630d ago

These comparisons are without any sense since there are big PS5 Shortages still.

darthv72630d ago

Availability is improving on a weekly basis. Check your local listings, it may surprise you. In my area (Northern California) I am seeing Walmart and Gamestop carrying them in store. They may only have a few, but still... it is a good sign of things to come. I am not seeing them being scalped as much as I was on my local offerup, craigslist and facebook marketplace. There are still some but nothing like it was a month ago.

Now, what i am saying is not the gospel as i know things differ from region to region, but things have been getting better in terms of the weekly availability going up. If you are in an area where shortages are still ongoing, dont give up. The trickle down effect will get there and you too can start seeing them in your stores.

Terry_B630d ago

I am trying to get a PS5 since 3 weeks now. Germany here.

darthv72630d ago

Im not sure how the allocation works, but EU (in general) got a huge increase in units and looks to be getting more as the weeks go on. Sony knows it is their biggest market so it wouldn't be surprising to see them get the lions share each week.

cell989630d ago

Yeah but the number of people that lived on earth in 2007 was a lot less than in 2022. More customers, more demand.

Crows90629d ago (Edited 629d ago )

Except that populations arent increasing in 1st world countries...sure with immigration it goes up and those immigrants help sustain and support population growth in those countries but...population is really only growing with groups of people from 3rd world countries.

So it doesnt actually add much when population is really only growing in countries where gaming isnt anywhere near as popular. Gaming has gone more mainstream...thats whats causing higher numbers.

Just look up birth rates. Most populations cant replace themselves. We porbably wont see the effects of the decline but our grandchildren probably will.
