Bungie officially joined PS family

PlayStation tweets :"The agreement to acquire Bungie has closed. So now we can officially say… welcome to the PlayStation family, @Bungie! "

darthv721064d ago

I'd love to see bungie make a new Marathon or Oni.

roadkillers1064d ago

Does Rockstar or Bungie own Oni? I found both answers online…

blacktiger1064d ago

I think Bungie owns it, regardless if they do, THEN ONI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KillBill1063d ago (Edited 1063d ago )

Take Two. They got Oni for their 19.9% stake they held in Bungie in 2000 when Bungie went to Microsoft. They also got Myth franchise in the mix.

gamer78041064d ago

Oni would be great but I think they’ll be stuck making destiny and tools for other live service games

SoulWarrior1064d ago

Almost 3 billion to continue to develop games for the main rival, still just seems like a mind boggling and agreement on that there.

1064d ago Replies(3)
LOGICWINS1064d ago

Its also 3 billion towards making live-service games that no one in the Playstation community asked for.

I'd be amazing if Bungie worked on Killzone and Resistance reboots, but that's wishful thinking.

This deal was done primarily to make "Fortnite-style" games that provide consistent revenue streams that single-player only games don't.

Obscure_Observer1064d ago

"Its also 3 billion towards making live-service games that no one in the Playstation community asked for."

Wonder where you´d get such information since Playstation is the home for such big online gaming communities such Microsoft´s Minecraft.

1064d ago
SurgicalMenace1064d ago

Who said no one asked for it? It amazes me how many of you speak as though you have access to the entire community. Your opinion nor mine doesn't matter outside of where they lead our decisions concerning our level of support. Please try to refrain from believing that billion dollar corporations make decision haphazardly. Why not cater to a group of people that have shown that they are willing to support live service games? You may not care for them but Sony's not concerned about you if their decisions aren't altered by your opened disapproval. Until you're in a position to where they're calling you before a move is made, your opinion is just a communication that can be dismissed as easily as it can be communicated.

Shikoku1064d ago

Sugicalmenace must have never worked at any billion dollar companies, they make haphazard decision and knee jerk moves all the time and even when their own people are sounding the alarm that it's the wrong move, they will forge ahead lose millions blame others and lay people off happens every day.
Lastly he is a consumer of their products he has every right and does anyone to comment and communicate his disapproval, were you even around during the whole xbone fiasco for Microsoft? That is literally an example of the community of people sounding off their disapproval of the product and the billion dollar company ignoring them forging ahead hoping the disapproval didn't pick up steam so their wrong decision wouldn't have to be changed and they lost and reversed course. Public disapproval and the ability to talk about share it and post it online and every consumers right and the only real way we have to fight back against said companies.

jznrpg1064d ago (Edited 1064d ago )

There is a very large community of people who play Destiny . I played the first one and it was pretty good but I just don’t have the attention span with the current state of my life to play these types of games . Maybe when I retire I’ll consider them more if done well. To say nobody asked is crazy .
Do the single player only people ask for it ? Of course not , but there are a lot of people who play both or mostly online and they will cater to those people too.
If it helps fund more single player games I don’t mind it at all.
They also talked about movies and other stuff with Bungie not sure what’s going to come of it but that’s also part of the deal .
I don’t really like GaaS as a whole but Destiny 1 was the best one that I’ve tried just don’t have the time or patience for it currently .

ChubbyBlade1064d ago

Yet all the most played games are live service games lol

SurgicalMenace1064d ago

You see you guys are always up in arms as though someone's stating that you can't express your disapproval, but fail to explore that they can equally be dismissed or ignored out right. This is true for any of us no matter how much you may not agree.

I'd get it if the plan was for a second team at Bungie to make a new IP which would be a "spiritual" successor to Halo, a new franchise with a captivating single player and a great multiplayer like the old school days but to continue Destiny...it's just sad, I don't see myself as a gamer / consumer benefiting from this at all. I hope that changes and I'm wrong but if Destiny didn't grip me and Destiny 2 didn't then Destiny 3 won't or something similar.

They need to make a new IP, something more single player focused.

Obscure_Observer1064d ago

"They need to make a new IP, something more single player focused."

Forget it. Sony didn´t bought Bungie for single player games. They done it for GaaS.

Bungie is indeed working on a new IP. Matter. But from what is known, it´s far from a single player focused experience.

SurgicalMenace1064d ago (Edited 1064d ago )

Let me get this straight, your argument is that because they're not making games that cater to your tastes they are in need of your invaluable advice on how to be successful? Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Bungie's contributions allowed them to work with some of the leading companies in the industry? Of all their achievements, which by your instruction has garnered them the most acclaim? Self-important much? Grossly overvalued one's own opinion, huh?

Please let us all know the next time that you've got Sony or Bungie on the line, as I'm sure that we've all got a thing or two to suggest as well. Might I ask, what is it that you do to have landed so high in the peaking order? Inquiring minds and all....

-Foxtrot1064d ago Show

@surgical

Pretty sure the only argument is that he individually doesn't see value in this acquisition for himself.

Nothing wrong with that.

@SoulWarrior

Not nearly mind boggling as Microsoft´s 68.7 billion acquisition to continue and develop games for Playstation.

Eonjay1064d ago

Neither are mind boggling. Microsoft isn't stupid. They aren't going to spend $68 billion and then cut the earning potential of the main get in half. That's preposterous. Same goes for Bungie.

ocelot071064d ago

More platforms more money to earn. Why not keep making the money off Xbox players who spend on destiny microtransactions? They would he really stupid not to.

Shane Kim1064d ago

Because Sony knows fanboy wars don't generate them money. But selling their games to most people will.

VenomCarnage891064d ago

@soulwarrior
What is mind boggling about the fact that sales are sales, regardless of which platform the money came from? Do you think Sony spends just for PlayStation fanboys to nut? They spend in order to turn a profit. Might as well have said
"I can't see why they spent 3 billion in order to make 3 billion + eventually"
It's just a nonsensical statement

garryxcs1064d ago

Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 billion and you can still play Minecraft on Playstation, its not "mind boggling" its business and both companies do it.

crazyCoconuts1064d ago

Maybe it's a bargaining chip in case MS wants to lock up Call of Duty...

P_Bomb1064d ago

The new Cold War? Everyone play nice or it gets the mutually assured destruction.

Tedakin1064d ago

I mean MS is paying 70 billion to continue to put games on Playstation...

Lightning771064d ago

Seems like Sony and MS are buying studios for the insurance and keeping the lights on for these companies. Rather than making exclusives out of multiplatform ips.

Lifexline1064d ago

I agree that whole deal made no sense for 3 billion it was a waste of money not worth it at all. Yes they made halo but they don’t have the rights to that. Destiny that’s it. Just seemed like a desperate move. Not worth it at all.

Crows901063d ago

You forget that they also have the best talent fro making really solid and incredible fps gunplay

roadkillers1064d ago

Mojang says hi. Great business decision.

mkis0071063d ago

Got to get that return on investment. What do you think would make MS more money? Games pass on xbox and pc or gamespass on anything that could run or stream the games? (It's Rhetorical)

Kind of like your comment

1063d ago
kayoss1064d ago (Edited 1064d ago )

Why is it a waste? Destiny 2 is still played by millions. Eventhough the game is multiplatform, Sony will still make money from it. In addition, now Bungie have a good reason to make destiny 2 content exclusively for the PlayStation. The acquisition by Sony, will hopefully allow Bungie to branch out to different IPs instead of just Destiny 2. It’s a win win for everyone and the players. Remember, Sony is lacking in the shooter department, With bungie’s help. They can probably make more shooters that can be competitive to the likes of COD or battlefield or even Fortnite.

tay87011064d ago

not a waste of money dude. they are going to make sony ALOT of money. their expertise in gaas games is going to crucial to the 12 1st party gaas games slated to be released in the next few yrs.

KillBill1063d ago

Expertise in gaas games? They have made a total of ONE gaas game. Destiny. They own 2 IPs... Marathon and Destiny. wow... 3 Billion? lol

Orchard1064d ago

I would’ve much preferred that they buy Konami (or their IPs) or Square than this.

3bn dollars on Bungie is a waste.

-Foxtrot1064d ago

Konami is needed because they just aren't doing anything with the IPs

Square...I'm not sure, if they still had Tomb Raider, Hitman, Just Cause etc than totally but at this point if they HAD to buy a publisher I'd rather it be Capcom.

darthv721064d ago

MS spent nearly the same on Minecraft / Mojang. and look how well that turned out. Im sure Bungie will bring a huge return on investment to Sony. Destiny is a big $$ maker not to mention any other projects they may have waiting in the wings.

1064d ago
VenomUK1064d ago

@DarthMarvin I sincerely believe Minecraft has been Xbox’s best acquisition. It allows for traditional gaming at a less intense pace as well as creativity. In the gaming market we all know popular franchises can lose popularity, by comparison Minecraft is an evergreen and timeless game that will likely always have new customers with every generation of children. It requires a Microsoft log in. So it’s almost guaranteed to strengthen Microsoft in the long term. Since the acquisition it’s generated approximated $2.5 billion in revenue, pre tax and excluding development costs so Microsoft will make its money back.

shinoff21831064d ago

I actually agree with you. They wouldve done better by buying one of those companies. Capcom square konami maybe made a push for sega.

gangsta_red1064d ago

Sony has more than enough developers making single player games, them buying Konami or Square would be redundant. Their whole reason these last couple of purchases is expanding into areas they seriously lack in, live game services, multiplayer focused games.

They need games that generate money yearly with a player base that can potentially grow year to year. Bungie is a developer that has more than enough experience for this.

TheColbertinator1063d ago

@gangsta red

Excellent comment that cuts right to the point and makes valid assessments without being condescending. Unfortunately you are the only one who had such a comment here.

Destiny10801064d ago

bungie is actually a great purchase because it counter acted microsofts Activision deal and it didn't cost 70 billion

Imalwaysright1064d ago

Please explain how exactly is this deal is even comparable with Activision's purchase?

garryxcs1064d ago

When that MTX money rolls in from xbox users it won't feel like a "waste" for Sony.

oldenjon1064d ago

No, Sony doesn’t need Japanese developers to compete with Microsoft. It needs large scale western developer acquisitions. Bungie a huge win for them. Microsoft still hasn’t matched the quality of their Halo titles (with any of their first party titles really) after years of trying.

SurgicalMenace1064d ago (Edited 1064d ago )

Man, what sector of the business industry do either of you find your professions in? Both Orchard and Foxtrot, you both seem to only base what you think around yourselves instead of seeing the entire market. What either of you would rather happen doesn't matter, as neither of you are in position nor are providing capital to fund said preferences. This is the reality of the matter, nothing more, nothing less.

ChubbyBlade1064d ago

Yea buying the studio that made 2 hit franchises and made billions is a bad buy lol

tay87011064d ago

konami would have been a huge overspend. their studios are next to worthless. they have some great dormant IPs, no way am i spending 6 billion to get MGS, castlevania and silent hill though.

John_McClane1063d ago

Bungie hasn't been relevant in a long, long time.

1063d ago
Orchard1063d ago

@John Pretty much. Most PS gamers (myself included) didn’t even care for Bungie/Destiny before this acquisition.

I could name a whole bunch of studios I’d rather buy ahead of Bungie.

derek1063d ago

@Orchard I'm convinced Sony is in the process of buying Square if they haven't already.

Orchard1063d ago

I am convinced too. I believe that is what was behind the sudden selling off of their more western themed games recently.

Now that Bungie and Haven are closed out, we might see some movement.

Congratulations, Jim Ryan and the Team Playstation!

Bungie is made of amazing developers and masters of their craft. Quality will definitely continue to improve at Playstation Studios, which is great for everyone.

Eonjay1063d ago

Have to agree with you on this one. I can't see anything negative about this for any party. Bungie wins because they have have the backing of a huge publisher who will basically let them do what they want including new projects and their media projects. All players win because Bungie will make games for all platforms. Sony wins because they will profit from Bungies sales and they finally have a world class dev that can make popular FPS games.
