GameStop launches NFT marketplace as it hunts for growth in digital-fueled turnaround

This is the latest push by the videogame retailer, now chaired by Chewy founder and activist investor Ryan Cohen, to invest in a digital future.

So they are actively trying to die quicker? Do they have something that they can only obtain once they no longer exist as a company? Curious end goals here.

NFTs and crypto as a whole in a state of steep decline. What better time to jump on NFTs, far and away the worst thing to come from the world of digital "goods"?

Gamestop is so far out of touch though, this isn't surprising in the least.

Bobertt436d ago

it's not that they are out of touch it's because the big video game developers keep trying to push NFTs and Crypto into games so they decided to launch a marketplace for them. Obviously most real gamers hate this push but no one knows who will win. We hated microtransactions but the casuals and whales bought into it and now it's infected everything so that may happen with these over time too unfortunately.

Good point. Dumb casuals being sold on everything

Gamestop continues to outdo themselves with one stupid decision after the next.

shinoff2183436d ago

Dumb. They could have lined up to be a safe haven for those of us that still prefer physical games. Instead they find some dumb way to jump on the bandwagon. Good luck to all the digital people that get their games taken away by companies for whatever reasons. Ie ubisoft

New Microsoft/Activision deal addresses previous CMA concerns in cloud gaming

The sale of Activision’s cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft substantially addresses previous concerns and opens the door to the deal being cleared, the CMA said today.

A step 🚶‍♂️ in the direction.

Phil note to self “buy Ubisoft “

crazyCoconuts1d 21h ago

exactly what i was thinking when i read this lol

Zeref1d 21h ago

They're actually not allowed to buy Ubisoft. For 10 years at least lol

badz1491d 8h ago

They don't want Ubi, they want Nintendo

Workshyskiver2d ago

Well at least this drama will be over in the next few weeks. Got to laugh at the CMA though, clearly just looked for a way to save face and act like they achieved anything remotely meaningful.

Profchaos2d ago

I don't want it to stop so far we've seen deep behind the iron curtain I want more

You’re probably not aware that it was MS that went back to the CMA to find ways that it could make the deal pass. Easy to get lost in all of the false narratives that many people put out there.

“Microsoft President Brad Smith has shared a company statement on the move, as the Xbox owner begins "considering how the transaction might be modified" to make it work for the UK CMA.
Here's the full quote from Microsoft:
"After today's court decision in the U.S., our focus now turns back to the UK. While we ultimately disagree with the CMA's concerns, we are considering how the transaction might be modified in order to address those concerns in a way that is acceptable to the CMA.
In order to prioritize work on these proposals, Microsoft and Activision have agreed with the CMA that a stay of litigation in the UK would be in the public interest and the parties have made a joint submission to the Competition Appeal Tribunal to this effect."

Em I am intently aware that as soon as the FTC lost the judge ruling and it became clear that only the CMA was in a position to offer any meaningful opposition both the CMA and MS appeared to the CAT to ask for a stop to their appeal.

CMA's ruling was clearly flawed and nonsensical as was becoming apparent in the CAT hearings and this micky mouse Ubisoft deal is just a way for them to back down with saving some face

Regardless on anyones position on whether the merger should go ahead both the FTC and CMA have done nothing but makes themselves both look clueless about gaming.

Cool, just showing you what came directly from the MS source. It’s status quo to ignore facts these days.

After the FTC leaks and Microsofts long term plans...I just can't believe this got passed anywhere buuuut money talks I guess

PhillyDonJawn1d 22h ago

Most of those plans are no longer possible

Zeref1d 20h ago

What exactly leaked that you think should be detrimental to this deal?

-Foxtrot1d 17h ago

The fact that they are power hungry and it’s clear they aren’t going to stop, going for a monopoly or close to it within the gaming industry

Have you been living under a rock?

MrDead2d ago

The power of money on show. When you're as rich as MS you get handed industries as a reward for being rich. We've all seen the evidence of what MS has planned and now there's nothing to stop them.

Remember you don't have to be any good to be competitive, you just need a rich parent company.
