Stop being so entitled -- game developers don't owe you anything

Some of the creators behind the new God of War and Monkey Island games are receiving abuse, and it's completely unacceptable.

Entitlement is a gaming thing I guess. People want day one games on PS Plus, or they're not buying. Gamers want console games on PC or they're not buying. Gamers want this and that or they're not buying. Why not make an article then?

Oh, is it because it's God of War, that people want to talk about entitlement, and how bad it is for gaming? Well, don't point out one example, and ignore the other examples. Makes you look like you have an agenda or something.

Orchard1045d ago (Edited 1045d ago )

It’s pretty simply really - no one en masse is abusing developers, sending female employees nudes, issuing death threats etc against developers for their game not being on PS+ or PC or whatever - so there’s no article on it 🤷

Wanting better value for your buck is fine. Abuse is not. The two are not even remotely comparable.

Even SSM and Cory have spoken out against it. Nothing to do with it being GoW, unless you’re saying they also have an ‘agenda’.

P.S. It’s not a good look to be defending these people and their behavior or trying to minimize, simplify or justify the level of abuse they’re putting out. These are real people reading and seeing all the garbage they’re sending.

jznrpg1044d ago

Well you should add Xbox to your list because there are plenty of those occurrences with your fan base too .

Orchard1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

@jznrpg I didn’t have a list in my comment.

Also not sure how Xbox is “my” fan base when I game near exclusively on PS5 and PC 🤷 I must be a really bad fan.

Abuse is wrong regardless of where it takes place & which platform it is related to.

Orchard1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

@Hatchet I’m vocal about the platforms I play on, and don’t really care about those I don’t - aside from perhaps some parts of the grass being greener on the other side.

Constructive criticism is not hatred or dislike. It’s how we as gamers get things we want, and get a better deal from corporations.

95% of my gaming is done on PS5, with the rest on PC (RTS, FPS) and a very small amount (exclusives) on Switch.

It’s that simple 🤷

@Silly Perhaps but they aren’t in here calling it a conspiracy. Cory himself has admonished their behavior. It’s pretty easy to see what’s/who’s right and wrong in this situation.

Everyone faces some sort of trolling or abuse online, it's nothing new. We see articles when it goes from a handful of idiots to a large group of people targeting a specific dev or studio. Like when God of War was delayed to 2022 and people started threatening to rape and murder Alanah Pearce just because she's a writer at SSM. And it's happening again with God of War, except this time it's shit like unwanted dick pics. It's not ok, and it should absolutely be called out.

No one is making this into a PS issue. It's the gaming community in general. The article even mentions Return to Monkey Island which is only releasing on PC and Switch. The fact that you're trying to deflect just because it's related to God of War is actually disgusting. Stop minimizing toxic behaviour.

Gamer751044d ago

"Oh, is it because it's God of War, that people want to talk about entitlement, and how bad it is for gaming?" well if you read the article you'd see that it's not just about one side

Dude the world we live in is full of entitled pricks, people wants things and they want it yesterday. No patience anymore.

And for someone who tries to spin people sending people nudes because their game isn't coming out into an agenda against God of war and Sony, but yet slates Xbox none stop for delaying their games is pretty rich.

Everytime you comment it makes me embarrassed to enjoy the same things as you do.

outsider16241044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

"Entitlement is a gaming thing I guess."

No it's not. It's just idiots on the internet nowadays that feel so entitled. People have a choice.
Game's delayed? Wait and do some other things or play other games in the meantime.
Too expensive? Wait for a price drop.
Game's not to your liking? Move on to other games.

Yppupdam1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

Agree 100%. You forgot, though, If a game fails, It's on the developers, not the customer that decided to not buy. If I decide that your game is not to my liking, You are not entitled to my money. if it happens en mass You failed, Dev team. Not the customer. The customer is not a "toxic istaphobe" if a game fails.

pietro12121044d ago

Not just gaming, the comic industry is like that too. People could easily move on to different books, games, etc, but instead they act like kids that don’t get their way. It’s pathetic

Entitled readers of free articles about entitlement.

Imalwaysright1044d ago

"People want day one games on PS Plus, or they're not buying. Gamers want console games on PC or they're not buying. Gamers want this and that or they're not buying."

So a person choosing how to spend his/her hard earned money is entitlement now?

thesoftware7301044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

He mentioned Monkey Island as well.

Also, look what people did to Kojima for working with MS.

People that take the time to attack game devs are absurd and ridiculous. People need 5o find a second hobby if they take gaming this seriously.

SDuck1044d ago

What's the harm in people (like me) wanting a console game on PC? Do you think I have nothing better to spend my money on a console as expensive as my pc cost me? Entitlement falls on many gamer topics. Wanting games to get ported to modern, more accessible platforms ain't one of them

NotoriousWhiz1044d ago

I like how you call "mostly" everyone that disagrees with you an Xbox fan boy when this particular article isn't about PS vs Xbox but instead about the toxic gaming community which exists on all consoles and PC.

Silly gameAr1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

Well, lets be honest. Most of them are xbox fans, but all of them aren't, and they may be people that I might have actually offended. Sorry to those people, but what I said was the truth. Gamers want shit for free, or for a very small small fee.

I've made people so damn mad, that they've tried to hack me. When you get so mad at someone that they have to try to mess up your net, then things have gone overboard. Those are people that take this shit waaay to seriously.

StarkR3ality1043d ago

@silly

No you've not offended anyone, you've just made yourself sound daft and you've shown complete disregard to any developer that's been given shit by fans by trying to brush it off as Xbox fanboys only doing it because it's Sony and Playstation.

You're deluded.

This is a hard debate

On one hand abuse and harassment is NEVER okay

On the other, there's SOME things and I said SOME where if you buy a game and it doesn't work then yeah they do owe you, like Cyberpunk or the shit show of Battlefield 2042...

Orchard1045d ago (Edited 1045d ago )

Agreed. Abuse is never ok - they owe us a fix / the product we believed we were getting when we purchased it.

No amount of online abuse would’ve fixed CP or BF either.

Hopefully most devs can just drown them out - there are plenty of legit fans of their work out there, especially GOW.

MrBaskerville1044d ago

But nothing should ever result in employees recieving dick pics.

porkChop1044d ago

If you buy a game and it doesn't work as advertised, yeah I'd say the devs owe you a finished and working product. That's fair.

RauLeCreuset1044d ago

How is it a "hard debate" when the article was clearly talking about responses to games that haven't released?

That's nothing more than rhetorical slight of hand from someone whose response to toxic fan behavior often equates to a statement paying lip service to saying it shouldn't happen, immediately followed by a 'but' type statement to justify or downplay the behavior.

"On one hand abuse and harassment is NEVER okay"

That sounds nice (aside from the inevitable 'but' comment it's setting up) until you realize this isn't a disagreeable statement to many of the same people who do abuse and harass, because they have different ideas of what constitutes abuse and harassment. Many of them think their behavior falls short of abuse or harassment, or that it doesn't count if the developers did something to 'deserve it.'

-Foxtrot1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

Because people jump from one extreme to the other on these sort of things

People called gamers entitled when they were going on about Cyberpunk, Battlefield 2042, Battlefront II and so on, so you start playing the entitlement card now, telling people developers don't owe you anything and it means it silences everyone from everything.

My point is there's a clear line between harassment / abuse and getting what you are owed.

I'd go on but I think you're going too far into my comment because you want to be upset, probably one of the people who were telling gamers to shut up when they were "bitching" about Cyberpunks awful launch.

RauLeCreuset1044d ago

"Because people jump from one extreme to the other on these sort of things "

Wait. Are you trying to pretend you represent some reasonable middle ground?

"People called gamers entitled when they were going on about Cyberpunk, Battlefield 2042, Battlefront II and so on, so you start playing the entitlement card now, telling people developers don't owe you anything and it means it silences everyone from everything."

That has nothing to do with what the article was calling out. I wonder if you even read it before you jumped to making a counterargument. But we can dig into how ridiculous that quote is.

Who is the "you" you're going on about? This is a specific article from a specific person, specifically about games that have not released. You're demonstrating the behavior you're trying to accuse others of. You're trying deflect from the actual criticism by lumping this article in with stuff someone somewhere said on the internet.

Also, weren't Cyberpunk purchases disabled on the PS store and MTs removed from Battlefront 2 over their respective backlashes? Those aren't good examples of people being silenced.

"My point is there's a clear line between harassment / abuse and getting what you are owed."

You said as a counterpoint to an article about two games that haven't released yet.

"I'd go on but I think you're going too far into my comment because you want to be upset, probably one of the people who were telling gamers to shut up when they were (complaining) about Cyberpunks awful launch."

Did YOU really just say that, Foxtrot. There's probably no point referring you to my own comment history on Cyberpunk when you're laughably lacking self awareness when it comes to your own comment history. Please never again have the audacity to accuse someone else of wanting to be upset.

-Foxtrot1044d ago

Sure sure man, whatever you say...whatever you say

No need to be upset over a user on this site, channel your energy towards the article or something.

You've went from (being on topic)

"I'm trying to defend the point the author is trying to make in the article"

to

"I don't like your tone, you aren't agreeing with me, how dare you, I'm going to focus my attention on YOU the user not the article"

Have fun...I guess

RauLeCreuset1044d ago

"No need to be upset over a user on this site, channel your energy towards the article or something."

Oh no! Foxtrot accused me of being upset. I guess I can't disagree with him or point out the flaws in his hypocritical argument now! You got me. The selective Vulcan act where you ignore your own well documented history of being in a perpetual state of upset to accuse me of getting upset is totally going to stop me from pointing out that it's actually your argument that is unrelated to the article.

Unlike your abuse of quotation marks to quote something you made up that I never said, let me use quotation properly to remind you what you actually said:

"I'd go on but I think you're going too far into my comment because you want to be upset, probably one of the people who were telling gamers to shut up when they were "bitching" about Cyberpunks awful launch."

With that reminder, was your fictional quote supposed to be representative of me or you?

After a game, you may have something to criticize. Before a game is released, you are an asshole who is harassing someone.

brewin1044d ago

Even then though, they don't really owe anyone anything. You had the free will to purchase or not. If it's a situation like with Cyberpunk where the product is not at all what was advertised, then we file lawsuits and hold them accountable. The harassment by the entitled people is despicable. We should speak with our dollars and not harass the people. That's going to send a bigger message.

-Foxtrot1044d ago

So imagine you went out for food

You get the food and it's shit

You tell the waiter and the waiter turns around and says "Sorry about that but you had the free will to come in here, you had the free will to spend your money here, you had the free will to eat it"

I don't think you'd be happy so don't even go there...

Lightning771044d ago

If you spend a 60 or 70$ game and it broken or only half way delivered then yeah that's a problem. However in this particular case that's not the issue. Neither GoW or Monkey Island are out so we can't judge the games on those merits you mentioned. This is out about a design choice (Monkey Island) and A release date (GoW)

Complaining about video games is a first world problem. Playing AAA games is luxury. A minority, of overly vocal, obnoxious, entitled gamers need to understand that the devs don’t work for them.

Knightofelemia1044d ago (Edited 1044d ago )

All I want from Santa Monica is a great game that is addicting with a great story and a release date. But sending pictures of your dick or of a dick shows you're really that bored, immature, someone laughed at you because it's small and you want a second opinion, or you're some dumbass kid who just learned how to use Google for dick pics and learned how to copy and paste one. God of War will come out when it comes out if it gets pushed to get the bugs worked out yes I am a little disappointed but to stoop that low is asinine. It's Santa Monica they are a great studio but wow some people are just complete idiots this is why idiots shouldn't have access to the internet. Pretty soon it will come to the point where Santa Monica will stop answering fans because of all the dick pics.

What an absolute half-hearted and shoddy way for Sony to commemorate the epic God of War series. A few alternative skins and the option to buy t-shirts or vinyl. It would have been better to not have any celebration. Abysmal.

Every month in 2025 God of War Ragnarok has had more steam users than Starfield.

Damn Sony
You keep on remastering recent games and yet choose not to for a franchise that's celebrating it's 20 years?
I'm sure a lot of old and new fans would appreciate being able to play the entire saga using their current gen consoles.

Shane Kim58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Sure but that would require to actually remaster. Not selling the same game from last gen in a new box and call it remaster.

Profchaos58d ago

I admit I got a bit swept up in thinking we would get a PS classics drop of the first game on PS plus not a remaster or anything just running under the new ps2 emulator id be.halpy with that or the PSP games that deserve more praise really
