Does The Last of Us Part 1 Deserve To Be Called a Remake?

The Last of Us Part 1 reveal raises some serious questions.

They should have waited a generation for something like this. The game just turned 9 years old only, and already has a remaster that holds up to this day.

Army_of_Darkness1093d ago

I honestly think they did this remake just to get the original last of us into the spotlight and overshadow the last of us 2 due to its controversy and all... and also for the promotional benefit of the upcoming last of us HBO series.

MadLad1093d ago

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the sequel. Thw gameplay is really solid. That's about all I'll give it.

If you're right though it just seems like a waste. A full blown remake would have been way more impactful if they just waited. If it is, to an extent, just a marketing tool for the show, then that's a waste of an amazing game that was a real stand out of that generation of consoles.

Tacoboto1093d ago

To overshadow a 10 million unit selling title two years after it came out?

Damn, let it go already

v_eno_m1093d ago (Edited 1093d ago )

@Tacoboto

"To overshadow a 10 million unit selling title two years after it came out?

Damn, let it go already"

considering that there is still a side that's divided by how Part 2 ended, do you think it would have made a wise business sense for ND to spent the resources/time to spit out Part 3 next?

Do you honestly think they'll sell 10 million Part 3 units? i for one agree with Army of Darkness, as well received Part 1 was, it was in conjunction to promote the HBO series

RauLeCreuset1093d ago

@v_eno_m

"considering that there is still a side that's divided by how Part 2 ended, do you think it would have made a wise business sense for ND to spent the resources/time to spit out Part 3 next?"

I've spent way more time crunching numbers on TLOU2 to debunk baseless claims about its reception than haters have spent making up baseless claims to put a negative spin on its reception. The Metacritic user review score is the one many of them try to use when asked for evidence to back their arguments. They conveniently ignore the obvious review bombing (I've also broken down numbers on that) and treat the user review score as a reliable metric. What they don't do is engage the data in a substantial way that goes beyond confirming their biases.

For example, did you know that the same Metacritic user review data detractors love to cite shows Part 2 has over 2.8x the number of positive reviews than both versions of the original combined? Something tells me they aren't trying to run away from Part 2. It's doing just fine.

shinoff21831093d ago

I think its due to the show.

Mr_cheese1093d ago

Give it a rest. TLOU2 was a success wether you liked it or not.

This remake feels more like they're trying to get another wave of audience in anticipation for the TV adaption.

I'd also say that there have definitely been talks for a part 3 if not planning for its development however, time will tell on that and I for one will be here for any game that Naughty Dog release because let's be honest, they set a standard each time.

Inverno1093d ago

But it's a PS3 game and a the whole ps4 gen just came and passed soooo

MadLad1093d ago

I think you know that's not the point. the game literally just turned 9 years old. There's already a remaster that holds up to this day.

Remakes were always used to bring old games up to modern standards in terms of visuals and mechanics. To make something old feel modern.
This is an example of a company wanting to sell you a somewhat older game at full price again.

outsider16241093d ago

"Remakes were always used to bring old games up to modern standards in terms of visuals and mechanics. To make something old feel modern."

Isn't that exactly what it's doing?

MadLad1093d ago

@outsider

Except there's nothing archaic about the game in question. We don't even know if they're changing much at all in terms of gameplay.

anast1093d ago

A console generation is roughly 10 years. I am not sure one more year would make a difference.

MadLad1093d ago

You two really need to stop taking everything so literally and actually read my posts because that's where my point of view sits. Not in the narratives you're building around them.

I didn't say anything about 10 years and how that's the magic number of when a remake makes sense. I'm saying they should have sat out this generation and left the series alone, outside of maybe a sequel. This should have waited until the days of the PS6, and should have been built from the ground up for new hardware. That was pretty much always the point of a remake.

My point being

Crash remake - 1996/2017
Spyro remake 1998/2008
Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remake - 1999/2020
Last of Us remake - 2013/2014/2022

The first 3 let 2 decades and multiple generations of hardware come to market before releasing. All built from the ground up.

Last of Us, in 9 years, is remastering a remaster. It's still the same engine, just updated; and not to a severe degree by any means.
What they should have done is wait until the days of the PS6 and built a modern version from scratch in a brand new engine. Though who is to say that's not in the plans at this point lol.

anast1093d ago

@Mad Never said you did. Never said it was magic either. I was putting your comment into perspective. So, 20 years is your magic number? I don't get it.

outsider16241091d ago

@madlad..
It astounds me as most of you still don't know the difference between a remaster and a remake.

Inverno1093d ago

They said they are changing gameplay, and tbh the first game is annoying to play with how slow Joel is crouching.

Mobis-New-Nest1093d ago

I agree. For now I'll call it for what it really is. Not a remake, just a "Cash Grab"

anast1093d ago

That would be obvious, yes. Publishers like to make money.

Neonridr1093d ago

why not release a 3rd version. I feel like Capcom has released 6 different versions of RE4 at least.

Outlawzz1093d ago

Why wait when you can make one now that people will gobble up and one later lol

It's obviously a cash grab, ppl don't care so let them fill the suits up with cash

Knushwood Butt1094d ago

I kind of forgot that dualshockers exists.

'a remake that no one was calling for, and which will probably sell well'

?

Silly gameAr1094d ago (Edited 1094d ago )

They have a lot of trash opinion pieces they have to write I guess. Seems like Dualshockers is one of those sites that should be in the tabloid/clickbait category, It's a shame the crap some sites have to write for attention.

Pay attention to the people that approve these articles as well.

rlow11093d ago

Why? Looking for witch hunt? Sounds like something a communist country would say. Let’s hunt down these interlopers and deal with them.

Tacoboto1093d ago

It'll come to me probably after I comment, but there was a site I can't remember the name to that was posted here multiple times daily, all tabloid crap with no context to fuel console wars.

If another outlet did an interview with a talking head, they would make a half dozen articles out of that one interview they didn't make. Example - we'd have 10 Phil Spencer articles in a week, all from that site, all based on just 1 or 2 sentences.

Dualshockers is absolutely not that (but this opinion piece is way too long for its own good on a game that literally is not even called Remake)

Jericho13371093d ago

Stop crying wolf over every article with speaks out against your precious piece of plastic, but then tip your hat off to articles criticising Starfield and the like. They’re making a valid point that is being echoed by enough people to be worth the discussion.

dumahim1093d ago

I mean, before the rumors came out about a remake happening, was there anyone asking for a remake?

Sniperwithacause1093d ago

Why does anyone have to ask for something? You had no part in making the game. Did you fund any of the production or development of the game? Things can be made or remade in this case without anyone asking for it. The game won a ton of awards, and was one of if not the best game at the time of release. So if they want to boost it up in terms of quality, then why not. To complain like you are, I just want to know who is holding a gun to your head making you buy it?
I won't be responding back if you decide to reply. I've said my peace.

dumahim1093d ago

@Sniperwithacause

Not saying someone does. Looks like I responded to the wrong person. It seems Knushwood Butt was confused about the comment about no one calling for a remake of the game.

Knushwood Butt1093d ago

I'm just curious how a remake nobody was calling for will sell well.
Sounds like business gold. Make stuff nobody wants and have it sell well. This must be what they teach on MBA courses.

SoulWarrior1093d ago

Feels like these articles are beating a dead horse.at this point.

ClayRules20121093d ago (Edited 1093d ago )

These articles are a joke🤦🏼‍♂️

BrainSyphoned1093d ago

This opinion falls short of a remake and more likely falls into the category of remastering someone else's opinion.

As expected. Unless it's going to Xbox or Switch 2, we can stop hearing about these older games now? We can move on to just news about new games?

darthv7272d ago

....until the PS6 remake followed by the PS7 reboot

Christopher72d ago

Man, first year of PS6 is going to be 90% remasters. I'm going to hate it and likely hold off until new games actually get released that I can't play on my PS5.

Cacabunga72d ago

Yes I’m waiting for complete remaster…. On ps5

OtterX72d ago

...20 years later, "you haven't heard the last of us yet!" *releases The Last of Us Retro Collection*

cloganart72d ago

@Christopher

Oof, yeah. I don't think I'm picking up the PS6 until "Pro" comes out 😂

Cacabunga72d ago

I haven’t played Tlou1 since PS3 and i have the greatest memory of it

Notellin71d ago

I'm already dreading all the cross generation games and remasters we'll see with the next round of consoles.

LonDonE71d ago

lmao this is getting ridiculous but thing is if people keep buying them.. then why would they stop making them?
Peeps STOP BUYING this game.. that actually hurts me to say this as the last of us is high up on my greatest games of all times.. its one of the few games i played through start to finish 3/4 times back to back as i loved it so much. But sony need to stop, give us a Resistance 3 remaster, i would love and buy that.. such an underated series as was killzone.
Or give us infamous.. so many great series and titles i would gladly buy but they just want to keep giving us last of us.

I am done buying that game.. i would only buy part 2 remaster if they remade it and kept joel alive, or i am not interested. Hate last of us 2s story killing off joel.. the actual game is stunning and incredible, they improved so much in the gameplay department but i hate the story with a passion.

We can stop hearing about it when they stop re-releasing them I guess.

I reckon the ps6 version will be 8k 240 and I'll still not care.

I miss new games from nd

Inverno72d ago

And HBO just announced season 3 even tho LoU2 couldn't possibly be so long that it wouldn't be able to fit in 1 season. They're just milking it at this point.

darthv7272d ago

speaking of the HBO series... I felt they should have made part 1 across two seasons, then address part 2 in seasons 3 and 4. so now i have a feeling they rushed through part 1 in season 1 to make season 2 a cliff hanger with Joel's impending demise being the starting point to Season 3.

-Foxtrot72d ago

I love how they decided to rush, chop and change things for Season 1 to get through the game yet for TLOU Part II it’s like “we’re going to do multiple seasons and take our time”

Inverno72d ago

Okay after seeing that there's only 7 episodes I take it back. Though I think it's incredibly stupid not to have just made the season longer. Another season just to finish what could've just been a 13 episode season seems counterintuitive but aiight. I put that on HBO tho.

Neonridr72d ago

This will be the 4th time Sony sells us The Last of Us Part 1.. And the 2nd time on the PS5.

Knushwood Butt72d ago

They don't want Metroid Prime holding that record,

NotoriousWhiz71d ago

Strange, I thought the record went to Street Fighter 2.

72d ago
FPS_D3TH72d ago

We are approaching Skyrim levels here

Profchaos72d ago

At this point we are at Skyrim in terms of frequency. Skyrim was one per generation. If you exclude VR Skyrim we've now exceeded it

Tlou 1 PS3, 1 PS4 2 ps5
Skyrim 1 ps360 2 PS4/x1/vr 1 ps5/sx

Tlou 4
Skyrim 4

Christopher72d ago

Not quite. Skyrim had:

PS3/360/PC
PS4/X1
VR
Switch
Skyrim Special Edition PC/PS4/X1
Skyrim Special Edition PS5/XSX

VersusDMC72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Also add skyrim bundles like the one below and all the humble bundles since that's what everyone is doing here

https://www.xbox.com/en-CA/...

darthv7272d ago

@Chris, LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base. At least Skyrim was able to sell to a wider audience via different platforms.

Christopher72d ago

@darthv72: I don't know why you're telling me that. I only corrected on number of Skyrim re-releases/ports/etc. I didn't say anything else.

Profchaos72d ago

@christopher guess I forgot just how much was out I think the special editions are technically one release despite being cross platform though would the Alexa version count

Christopher72d ago

@Profchaos: I guess, but I'd consider it a separate release since it rolled them into one at a later date but definitely there is a PS5/XSX version with PS5/XSX supported updates specific to them.

Chevalier71d ago

"LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base"

Weird. Like 35% of PS5 owners are NEW to Playstation. Plus this is really for new fans from the TV series for season 2 of TLOU.

I recall the same idiotic comments when the 1st one was remade just before TLOU TV Series came out and it went on the be one of the best selling games that year.

So maybe get your FACTS straight. Unlike Skyrim getting literally releases in 3 generations and 10 releases.

I gotta figure RE4 is up there too

FPS_D3TH71d ago

No. Those are remakes. Not remasters

Neonridr71d ago

@FPS - we've had quite a few RE4 remasters, only 1 remake.

CrimsonWing6971d ago (Edited 71d ago )

@FPS_D3TH

It blows my mind how people do some mental gymnastics to try to cope with a game they like doing the same thing (technically more) they’re complaining about for another game.

RE4 - PS2, GC
RE4 w Motion Controls - Wii
Literally RE4 HD Remaster - Xbox 360, PS3
I’m assuming a port of RE HD - PS4, Xbox One
RE4 Remake - PS5, Xsex

1 Remake and the bunch are Remasters… how, I mean how—Y’know what, it doesn’t matter anymore…

P_Bomb72d ago

Store says I already own it. I guess it’s just a straight twin-pack. Looks like they added 4 maps to ‘No Return’.

VersusDMC72d ago

You don't need to buy this to get the maps, marlene and bill. It all got patched in to the game on the 3rd.

P_Bomb72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Good to know. I’ve watched runs of ‘No Return’ but have yet to try it myself. Soon, soon 😉

darthv7282d ago

82d ago
isarai82d ago

@darthv72

Literally yes 🤨

Cacabunga81d ago

Every Mario and Zelda is different. This is just the exact same game over and over

anast81d ago

Skyrim, yes. Mario and Zelda since the 80's

Loktai81d ago

@darthv72 Uh yes. Yes it has. They milked BOTW across Wii U and switch and they STILL want 40+ for it new and never discounted it. They made "remasters" of older zelda games as well on switch and in the past onto the other gameboy platforms from the older platforms. They have done the same with Mario. They port the paper mario games and mario RPG to switch. And now I PROMISE you they are going to show "enhancements" for those same games on Switch 2. I PROMISE you thats going to get mentioned, maybe even tomorrow. Last of us Part 1 has been across techncially 3 generations, but 2 has been 2- and JUST BARELY 2 because it released just a few months before the PS5 did - and so if that counts as milking it, what do you call breath of the wild on Wii U then going to switch or Twilight Princess coming uot on gamecube and Wii - OR ZELDA WIND WAKER HD coming out?

"Skyrim games for three console generations?"

Darth showing some idiocy here. Seriously yes Skyrim has been re-released more than any other game period. It's been released on 3 generations - PS3, PS4, PS5, PSVR, PC, PC VR, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S. That's 10 releases across 3 generations! So Seriously get your DAMN facts straight.

Yui_Suzumiya81d ago

And yet Fallout 3 has never been Remastered. Prison time should be given for that offense, lol

darthv7281d ago

Skyrim sure, but the other two... not so much

thorstein81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

@darth GTAV says hi.

Skyrim has an Alexa edition.

Chevalier81d ago

Clearly a guy with business acumen! Why would Sony want to rebundle games and release them in time for the 2nd season of TLOU to release? I mean the last time a bunch of idiots laughed at Sony then guess what? TLOU part 1 for PS5 only hit top 5 sales and kept popping onto charts throughout the year?! Lol

81d ago
Chevalier81d ago

"Skyrim sure, but the other two... not so much"

Multiple Mario and Zelda games have made 2 generations. Maybe you guys forget that over a 3rd of the gamers on Playstation have NEVER owned a Playstation system before and some are coming into it as a result of the TV show.

People said the EXACT same crap when the 1st game got released on PS5, but, it ended up being one of the best selling games the year it came out.

Also for all the idiots complaining. Playstation at least offer $10 upgrades for some of these games. Have you EVER seen a re-release by Nintendo, Xbox, Bethesda offer that?! No I didn't think so.

darthv7281d ago

releasing a newer version because the previous version is not physically compatible is not quite the same as taking a perfectly good existing game that already works on the newer platform and repackaging it under a remaster brand for that newer platform and then repackaging it AGAIN for the same platform.

And that whole line of *insert people here may not have had a PS before* is a line of BS. PS2 is the most selling platform in history... chances are very good a high percentage upgrade to the PS3 and then upgraded to the PS4 and are upgrading again for the PS5. So dont give me that line of bologna. you'd rather swallow every bit of Sony propaganda instead of call them out for milking (and yes this is milking) this game. You know there will be a PS6 version and likely a PS7 remaster.

Of course i am purely speculating on the 6 & 7 but there is a high degree of probability because of what they did already between 3, 4 & 5. And you defending even the $10 upgrade when most of the XB games get free upgrades is just another sign of your blind loyalty. I didnt think it possible and gave you benefit of the doubt but now I can see i was totally wrong.

Chevalier80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

@Darth

Again your examples are absolutely terrible. Repackaged games for new audiences isn't new with the high cost of development. This release is timed for people that are new to Playstation coming from watching season 2 of the TV show. If you're surprised and annoyed by this then stop gaming then. It will happen if there's some new Skyrim, Fallout, Doom or whatever TV show comes out too.

Also you're the guy who defends Xbox for this crap too. Skyrim releases were done while owned by Xbox.

Also you mentioned the PS2, repackaged games happened all the time then too. If you think that repackaged games is going to go away with the skyrocketing cost of development is going away then sorry cover your eyes and plug your ears and pretend like an idiot then. You will be complaining daily soon.
