The Last of Us Part II surpassed 10 million copies sold

Arne Meyer: "Delighted to share our Summer Game Fest announcement: The Last of Us Part II surpassed 10 million copies sold earlier this year! Congrats to all Naughty Dog! Thanks to all at SIE, our partners, and all our fans for supporting our studio and our games. Love you all!"

Lightning Mr Bubbles1079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

It's all leading up to the Last of Us 3 at some point. I hope

SullysCigar1079d ago

Here's hoping. Also reckon they're building communication momentum leading up to Factions news!

FlavorLav011079d ago

Hell yea! Ellie’s still a walking cure. This should further explored or be addressed ultimately. Fingers crossed for part 3.

DarXyde1079d ago

Something about Naughty Dog with The Last of Us: they love these ambiguous endings where they're free to call it quits but they set up a plot point where to continue the series. The ending of II does just that.

Kosic1079d ago

I'd love for them in last of us 3 to go back to the present day and do the story of Joel's past. Where he survives the events up till he meets Ellie.

This seems quit low considering The Last of Us sold over 20 million.

darthv721079d ago

...and took 9 years and two versions to reach that.

neutralgamer19921079d ago

Jin_Sakai

You shouldn't bring facts to this argument

Darth

You do know a new IP after DDOS attack with barely any marketing is much harder to sell than a hyper sequel right

S2Killinit1079d ago

That was after remaster version no?

All in all good job to ND. What a series they made. Amazing job.

DarXyde1079d ago

Not really.

I get that it has name recognition now, but it's also not been out nearly as long. People are probably also expecting a remaster. You should also consider that people are kinda poor right now, the game got a ton of early unfounded ridicule regarding its narrative, and it spent some time on PS Now. Also, there are probably a decent amount of people waiting to play it on PS5.

Crows901079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

Yeah. No surprise there to me. Many people skimped on getting a new version and bought used or borrowed someone's copy.

The last of us 1 was universally praised by all. And to the comments below.
@s2killinit
Yes but the remaster was released shortly after the initial release due to how close last of us released to the release of the PS4. So really the remaster was aimed at those that moved straight to the next gen and might have missed it. That's why it sold so much. I for one am not one for buying an already released game a few months later again just because it's a remaster.

@darx
Nobody is waiting to play tlou2 on PS5. By now if they haven't got a PS5 they would have bought the PS4 version which is perfectly playable. This isn't a cyberpunk scenario dude.

By now all fans that give a shit would have played the game. this wasn't a new IP guys. It was a sequel to one of the greatest games in gaming history. Not a sequel to to some mediocre garbage.

mkis0071079d ago

How does it seem quite low? 2 years, vs 9 years. 1 release vs 2 releases? A game with nothing to divide the fanbase, vs one slammed before release.

The fact that all these things add up to half the sales at the current point in time is amazing. Just wait for a pc release.

Kornholic1078d ago (Edited 1078d ago )

Jin_Sakai, you are on to something. Think about Ghost of Tsushima, for instance. It is a new IP released close to The Last of Us Part 2's launch, and it has sold over 8 million units. Those sales were reported in January, so the sales of Ghost of Tsushima could be closer to 10 million now. Those are crazy numbers for a brand new IP.

I have a feeling that TLOU2's development costs were so high that 10 million units sold in 2 years is less than what they were expecting for an established IP from a prestigious developer. They were also hesitant to report sales data after the successful launch when they sold over 4 million copies very quickly.

The development of The Last of Us Part 2 started way back in 2014 and had over 2000 developers working on it across 14 different studios. That's not cheap.

The remake is probably done to recoup some of the money back.

Joejohn1078d ago

Did you just say 10 million is low? That's hilarious. 10 million on one console. For any game, that is a huge achievement. But I know this game burns people's behinds, so I understand the downplay.

mgszelda11078d ago

People don't want to admit it's not as good as part 1

darthv721079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

While that may only be half as many as the first has sold (20m+), the impressive part is it did it in less than 2 years where the first took longer and had two versions (soon three) on the market pretty close to each other.

Congrats ND... can't wait to get the PS5 version of Part 2 to put next to Part 1.

Lexreborn21079d ago

2 years 1 platform 10 million is a crazy feat for any franchise. That’s numbers expected on 2 or more platforms. It makes it a 1/2 billion dollar franchise. And it’s said it cost 100 million to make.

That return is insane for any publisher and for an in-house game it’s legit mostly profit with no payouts else where or separate development teams.

outsider16241079d ago

What do you mean ps5 version of Part 2??? They already updated part 2 with an enhanced version.

darthv721079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

It's still technically the PS4 with a patch. I'm talking about a proper stand alone version in PS5 packaging to compliment the PS5 version of Part 1. You know they will make one now that Part 1 is in that branding.

Imalwaysright1079d ago

The original sold 17 million copies on the PS3 so the "two versions" argument doesn't change the fact that it was more successful than the sequel and this without having the added bonus of being a sequel to one of the best games of all time AND releasing 2 or 3 months before a behemoth called GTA V. As someone that absolutely loves the original and despises what ND did with the sequel this puts a smile on my face.

LucasRuinedChildhood1079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

TLOU1 didn't sell 17m on PS3.

You're quoting the combined sales of the PS4 and PS3 versions by 2018 (5 years). https://www.polygon.com/201...

The PS4 version also didn't only sell roughly 3m copies. lol. It's likely the majority of sales at this stage.

"this puts a smile on my face" https://tenor.com/view/wait...

Imalwaysright1079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

I stand corrected. Can't find a source that splits sales between both consoles and I can only find one that says that in 13 months TLoU had sold 7 million copies on the PS3. Still, considering that it was a new IP and not a sequel to one of the best games of all time and that GTA V relased a few months after it, I have a smile on my face as 10 million copies seems like an underwhelming number for TloU 2 when by comparison if I'm not mistaken sold as much as Horizon Zero Dawn wich was a new IP, sold only 2 million more copies than Ghost of Tsushima wich is a new IP and sold way less than Uncharted 4, GoW and Spider Man.

Either come up with an argument that says why TloU 2 sales aren't underwhelming as I believe them to be or put yourself in your place because don't think for one moment that you control what I say or what I believe in.

tay87011079d ago Show
myfathersbastard1079d ago

I think the reason it didn’t sell “as well” (heavily debatable) is because people heard about the opening hour, and didn’t even bother playing it. I know 3 people personally who TO THIS DAY bitch and complain about it, but haven’t even played it. And I know 1 person who went in expecting to hate it for the same reason, and ended up loving it and admitting exactly what I said to him before he played it. The story doesn’t go where I would have wanted it to go, but damn it went to some amazing places and told a fantastic story about revenge, and what accomplishing or not accomplishing it does to people.
I could be wrong, but I’m gonna guess a large part of it is people didn’t even give Part 2 the chance it deserves. Didn’t even bother to play it and just bad mouthed it anyway.
It’s just as good as the 1st game imo.

Imalwaysright1077d ago

tay8701

I spoke of oranges and you're speaking of apples. I didn't say that TloU was a failure or a success. I said that its sales were underwhelming and I gave the reasons that lead me to this conclusion. A game can sell 1 million copies and be a runway success depending on the context that surrounds it and a game can sell 10 million copies and have underwhelming sales due to again, the context that surrounds it. TloU 2 had everything in its favor to be far more successful than TloU and it failed to do so and that does put a smile on my face and I'm the one that doesn't have to justify to you because I couldn't care less of oh how tired you are about reading comments about TloU 2 or what ND thinks because I will speak my piece when I want to.

Lol haters had convinced themselves it bombed financially. Posting pictures of copies at stores, and claiming naughty dog was afraid to mention the sales.

Nyxus1079d ago

They are still trying to convince themselves.

Smellsforfree1079d ago

Meh, a bunch of homophobic reject left-overs from gamer gate that nobody cares about. They get shit on whenever they show their head, and rightfully so.

tay87011079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

100% correct. what i love is that suddenly people were in an uproar when it was very apparent ellie was gay in left behind dlc. the only people spouting this shit are homophobes that probably never played the game or the left behind dlc that preceded it.

1079d ago
oof461079d ago

I wouldn’t say it bombed, but there was a lot of money left on the table. The first game is absolutely beloved and there was MASSIVE hype for the sequel. I still stand by my opinion. Technical and acting masterpiece but didn’t like the story.

generic-user-name1079d ago

Gonna have to see how they're spinning this on r/TLOU2

generic-user-name1079d ago

Checked, they're claiming 10 million is bad, anyone saying otherwise gets downvoted to oblivion. Enjoy that copium boys.

VerminSC1079d ago

Hahha yet only GOW and Spiderman did better. It beat every other game in that timeframe including Ghost of Tsushima that that subreddit said was beating it

Redemption-641079d ago

They are still trying, I was literally on Twitter with someone, that said 10M is a fail for the game and it should have done 15M

Well what do you know! Congrats to Naughty Dog.

-Foxtrot1079d ago

Really? Game of the Year, Over 300 awards, "Best game of all time", the Hype behind especially coming off the very first game, it's a lot but considering all of that I'd have expected it to be a lot higher. No wonder they've kept silent since the 4 million within the first month it released.

Hell God of War for example did 10 million during the first year and that was a bold new direction from the game which could have gone either way.

I know people are going to have a fit with this comment but sure...spin it however you like.

Nyxus1079d ago

The game is a success, time to accept that reality. There is only one person spinning things here.

-Foxtrot1079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

Lol sure

All that behind it and it only did 10 million 2 years later, with that kind of backing it should have been on God of Wars level or a little more.

Put it into perspective, in its first week it did 4 million....in ONE WEEK

Then it suddenly took 2 years to get 6 million more....

outsider16241079d ago

Ignore Foxtrot. The guy is now spinning around. Didn't he ask if tlou2 was such a success then where are the sales to prove it. Now that they announced it..he's now comparing it to GoW lol.

Why not compare it with tlou1 then. Tlou2 sold 10 million copies much earlier than Tlou1 did in the same time frame.
Talk about being so salty for a game. Jesus!!

DrDoomer1079d ago

It's a success in the sense that it's not an utter failure. But it would have been at least 2 or 3 times more successful if the story wasn't pure aids.

TripleAAARating1078d ago

The greatest game in the history of mankind
-Foxtrot, thoes tears are delicious 😋...

Tacoboto1078d ago

Games, like movies, and everything with hype-and-release, make a large proportion of their overall units at release when our time reference is... a narrow window after release. Shocker.

Especially when the game released in the midst of lockdown when the vast majority of the civilized world was locked indoors, despite a huge onslaught of hate-driven misinformation, lies about playable characters, spoilers and sharp reactions with zero context applied.

10m of a young game (earlier this year could mean as little as 18-20 months post-release) vs 20m of a game that has been on steep sales dozens of times over its 9-year lifespan, that also, like RE7, had sequel-hype further boost its sales.

God of War is also the 7th game in its franchise and was relatively bright and colorful. TLOU Part 2 just might be the most miserable storyline in a AAA game of its genre and the way its main character got killed off was revealed with the context being what leakers decided to ruin for us.

The only one spinning anything here is you. LMAO.

outsider16241079d ago

So you're saying 10 million is a failure (on just 1 platform by the way)? Tlou1 did it longer...so it must be a Colossal failure. Lol.

Man..you really want Tlou2 to fail don't you.

ABizzel11079d ago (Edited 1079d ago )

Considering the leaks, the lies, how many people created hate campaigns, attacked the studio, had FULL ON PAGES DEDICATED TO ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO NOT BUY THE GAME AND STREAM THE STORY, and all the other BS controversy around this game because they were mad you couldn't kill "the buff transgender Abby" (aka fake "woke" trans lie) who took a golf club to their murdering VG Daddy and didn't get a happy ending or hero's death or TLoU 1.5.

I say congrats to them for the milestone, and a prime example of why Neil is happy to pursue writing and directing in other endeavors, because unfortunately, the vocal gaming audience, especially on Twitter are the scum of the community. Y'all ran this game's name through the mud, and want to sit here and act like it was supposed to go on to be a 30+ million seller....

So congratulations on 10 million sold, being GOTY, and winning over 300 awards, even through all of the hate and ignorance this community can produce. Congrats to the game having legs and people actually picking it up and playing for itself. I see people post in comments every so often about how amazing this game is to this day after their first time playing it, and it's often because of their ignorance that attacked this game.

Go home Tails, you're drunk. 🗣 SONIC COME GET HIM.

"No wonder they've kept silent since the 4 million within the first month it released."

Gonna have to send you my doctor's bill for the damage this did to my retinas from eyerolling so hard.

Name 5 first party Sony titles that have sold more on one platform in just 2 years. If not 5, can you name 3?

ChickenOfTheCaveMan1079d ago

10 millions after the false rumors, the bashing, the complete hate online from people probably just listening to cheesy Marvel movies. Yes, it's a success.

Sometimes, when you swing for the fences, people won't be up for the ride and that happened with Part II after people heard a certain character dies, but I think in the future if not already, this game will be up there amongst the greats even for most of those of said they'd never play it.

Good for you for sticking to your rhetoric, but you're wrong.
