You're right, there are some great games on PS5. But it's not about Xbox. Its more about what Sony could do better and more of. The author mentions that Sony is just kind of relying on old hat stuff. Im excited for RE4 remake as much as anybody. But it's true that Sony is using another Resident Evil and another Final Fantasy to show off their system and that's not good enough. It does feel kind of ho-hum at this point. I want to see the new stuff that couldn't be done on the previous generation. I want to see it from both, but Sony are the ones that have a lot to live up to after the runaway success of the PS4. How are they going to top that? Nobody has those expectations of Xbox.

We're 2 years in and this is all they have to show and it's not even coming until next year?! God of War will be nice, but it's what the 8th or 9th iteration of that franchise?! That is what the author is talking about. Where's the new franchises for the new gen? Sony is supposed bto lead that charge. But right now it does feel like they're "treading water, when they should be making waves"

I thought great games are what actually matter. GoW has a ton of iterations, but the most recent one was one of the best game I've played in a few years. As someone stated earlier, does Nintendo have any new IPs? last time I checked some form of Mario, zelda, pokemon, and intermittently metroid are the bulk of Nintendo games people rave abt. or what abt Xbox? halo, gears, or forza anyone?

SF6 is a 2.5D fighting game, with what seems to be a very lite/minor open area addition to it, and more than liekly still using MT Framework or UE4. There's nothing about that game that can't be done on a PS4 / XBO / Steam Deck / or even Switch for that matter, so why would they limit the potential audience on a game that can be made for all platforms especially both Capcom's Engines scale across both generations as well as UE4.

I've said this before, if a game isn't pushing physics / AI / simulation / or other evolutionary CPU related task, or push graphic fidelity a leap above anything PS4/XBO could handle, then it's easily possible for the game to end up being cross-gen.

There's almost nothing Street Fighter offers that would push any of those areas, except adding something like dynamic hair and cloth physics and ray tracing, that would make the game impossible to run on last-gen, and those two things are irrelevant to gameplay, and could still be features added to the PS5/SX versions while simply being left out of the last-gen versions.

I get what you're saying and the logic, but from the developer's side and logic it's illogical to not port your fighting game across all platforms when it can easily run across all platforms.

The controller and sound technology alone are enough to smoke both in the current gen arena. Between my A90J and HT A9 theater surround sound, the PS5 is the champion when met with the task of using them both masterfully. All this talk about how much they have to prove is cringe, at best. I, for one, am satisfied and I purchase everything allowing for more revenue to develop more of the standout quality Sony's known for. 98 PS5 games later and I couldn't disagree with your sentiment more. I have no games that are current gen for my Xbox. Even if I were to purchase both Forza and Halo, they're both cross gen. There's not one thing that cements the XB as a contender. I really disagree. It was okay. I can't get excited about FF16 even with the team behind it. I am tired of cookie cutter stories and lack of creativity with boring character development. I am hoping this isn't a problem. The combat, even with their improvements since XV, still doesn't seem that fun. I miss how relaxing yet creative and suspenseful some turn based fights were that real time action can't make happen. Of course both have negatives and positives but I think they're overdue. FFXII I liked the combat and think it was going the right direction

I think many of those who feel this way just expect more from Sony. I am personally happy with my PS5. Id prefer a few more games that weren't also on PS4 and it was a better launch window than just about any other console since probably Xbox 360.

But Sony is looked upon to provide the megatons and that just isn't happening right now. Pretty much everything they showed was for next year and most of it wasn't exclusive. Final Fantasy 16? FF doesn't hold the weight it used to and I don't like VR, I've had a couple concussions and cannot use VR without getting sick. Not my idea of enjoyment.

I'm hoping there's another one this summer where they show us those new franchises and big exclusives we know they've been working on. I don't care if it's not releasing until 2024, I want to know about it and at least see some kind of teasers. I just want to see something that screams "you MUST own this console, and they're just not there yet. I know they will be, but so far this gen has been owned by 3rd parties. Which is fine as I own a 3 consoles. I just buy PlayStation for those big-time exclusives, not 3rd party.

Sony releases a high quality console that isn't breaking. Gets nonsense about size. Sony releases high quality launch and launch window games. Gets crap about it being DLC, a game being hard and the same platformer that people actually like. That's why it was made.

Sony continues to release high quality games after a generation, excuses me, after GENERATIONS of high quality games over the years and it's never enough. Keeps us updated during COVID, a once in a lifetime event, knowing that things have gotten harder for mostly everyone including Sony. It has not gone away. And there's a war affecting every other country and the industry we all like.

Gives us updates on games we know about and games we get to see for the first time in motion. And it's not enough. Gives VR fans something to look forward to. Not tech demos like naysayers keep saying. But full games like RE8. And gets knocked for sharing VR with its community. Just a taste. Not a full blown event when we know they will have one eventually for VR. But some believe they they should keep VR separate when they clearly announced they were showing some. Because, contrary to some beliefs, VR games are GAMES. RE8 for example, is an FN game. But now can be experienced in possibly the best way. "Well, Sony should keep those games separate." Or they get knocked for showing Indies. Or showing 3rd Party games. But some of these gamers call themselves gamers nitpicking at everything. When we know from past experience, Sony will provide games for its base again and again.

Personally I didn't mind the State of Play however they need to separate VR announcements and the like for it's own VR centric show.

VR modes for already released games is fine but don't treat it as a huge part of the show, it's a nice little extra, not a leading reveal.

Had a blast playing a literature acting puzzle game called Animal Force. was just what I needed; fun, sometimes frantic, stress-free, and that instant sensation of escaping that you get when immersed in VR.

i do love my ps5 but i can't argue with any of the points being made here. It ironically is feeling old school for a new generation console - especially when compared to my Series X.

You can certainly argue that Sony got better launch games this generation so far and i won't argue that, but in general their business model, and insistence on proprietary tech, closed ecosystem and services are starting to feel dated and lagging behind the competition.

They have treated the ps5 largely like the ps3 and ps4 while comparatively, xbox has practically transformed its entire model, offering more flexibility, more options and more ways to play. When i say i use my series x more than my ps5, its because its just easier to - especially with gamepass. I will literally be scrolling through the ps5 section of the playstation store and see so many games i can literally just go download for free on my xbox - or pc - or stream them, or play on the cloud. I was literally playing Flight Simulator on my iPad in a doctors office while i waited for my wife. Thats better than any game being an "exclusive'. Exclusive just means its limited to one machine, and i think thats an old school way to look at things these days.

I'm not hating on PlayStation. like i said - i do really enjoy the ps5, but if we were to compare i wish the ps5 was more like the series x. Just being honest, but at least I'm open-minded enough to have both consoles and compare them objectively.

Those games aren't FREE on your Xbox. Microsoft game pass is because their games aren't selling as well as Sony's or they would be announcing from the rooftops that their games are selling like gangbusters. They diversified because that's all they could do. Instead, we get nonsense about 20 million logins without an idea on how many are playing or buying. What kind of crap is that? Sony released FINISHED games. Not 500 million dollar failures that's losing its player base but it's supposed to be a flagship title.

You talk about proprietary and walled gardens when there's games on Xbox not on PC or other devices. And if you're talking about cloud streaming, Sony has had Remote Play for PlayStation way before Microsoft that allows you to play away from the console. Oh oh oh you forgot that.

I want you to remember, Microsoft is worth 20 times more that Sony. But Sony has put out more new IPs and games every generation than Microsoft. Takes more risks than Microsoft from quirky niche games to VR that actually makes money even though Microsoft says they're waiting until it does. That is why Microsoft has never been the market leader. You should be expecting more because they are worth more. But as we have seen from last generation, you get less. But you're saying they are doing more. Sure. They were doing less. So, they threw money, billions at the problem like they always do that could have went into games and developers they had. I didn't say "better". I said new, which is what it is. That said, I will NOW say it's better, because it is. It's simpler, quicker, and more modern, unlike the clunky, dated, ad-ridden UI of the Series X.

Took almost a year offering storage upgrades.
Charging $70 for games that no one else is doing.
Charging $10 for upgrading to PS5 games.
Started off with a sloppy game upgrade system, you had to install 2 versions and sometimes save couldn't go with it.
Now they are in betting heavily on live service games.

Look, I play PS5 like the next gamer, but we have to stop pretending that it's all sunshine Sony is putting out. Nintendo and MS get criticize for using their respective heavy hitters regularly, but Sony does the same..GoW, FF, R&C Uncharted..love the games but let's not pretend that they are doing anything different.

I'm not dissing Sony's games..we all know they produce some of the best..which counts for a lot.

I pointed out some of the ways they are behind in certain areas..and I get it, games is what matter, but that is something that is always subjective based on the user. I think mentioning Wolverine is a bit of a stretch..cause if we do that then MS has way more announced new games coming.

Sony isnt perfect espcially the new jim ryan era, but still ahead of the competition where it counts and as long as the games keep coming everything else is a bonus.

He mentioned minor features Microsoft concentrated on but not mention features Sony has that Microsoft lacks. Did you notice that? Strange how they do that. It's things that can be fixed in an update if Sony feels it's worth adding. And Microsoft can't update their controller with software. They got to build a whole new one. But they felt copying the share button was enough to catch up.

Also notice he didn't mention one thing that matters over features: GAMES. They've been doing that since 360 like with cross game chat. But when we get to the thing that counts which is games, you get deflection.

I was talking about Sony's hiccups and I mentioned features they are behind on, so of course, I didn't list the things they are ahead on, that is the whole point of the thread, talking about Sony and some shortcomings, it's not really about MS. Both companies have things to work on and that is obvious, I'm sorry that you think that Sony is perfect and has no flaws, and we all should feel the same.

look at the difference in your and Flawlessmic's response. He clearly stated the same thing you did that games are what matter most and Sony is clearly in the lead, but acknowledged some features that would be good to have and are missing..see it's not hard to see that everything is not always so flame-centric..its a fact that the features are missing and would be nice to have. As far as the controller goes, it's once again subjective to the user...the Switch has motion control, HD rumble, and can detach some people love it some don't. I have all 3 and find I like the Dual sense better for action games like DMC5 and my SX Elite 2 for FPS so I can adjust the triggers and change out the thumbsticks...all subjective.

It was clearly stated on PS Blog that the latest SOP was focused on PSVR2 & 3rd party titles. There were some PSVR2-only titles shown including the PS console exclusives Stray & FFXVI. I would think there will be an upcoming SOP dedicated to showcasing PS first-party titles only.

i do agree Sony is holding back, but they are also building. They are expanding into pc and mobile building a play anywhere concept like Microsoft has done. they are a few steps behind trying to catch up on it. They also have many things under wraps. They still have a 2022 showcase coming up as well. The thing on the 2nd was for third party and vr2. They are going to show their stuff soon.

You can’t call an event excellent when the game of the show is a remake of RE4. The show is still underwhelming. However, I understand some people calling it great because it is possibly the best of the worst State of play shows.

I don’t like the state of play water dripping approach and rather prefer the big bang event approach like E3 shows.

Y'know..... I kinda agree with this article, they sort of did take chip shortages into account and low to no PS5 stock in almost every major city in the world. If you factor in that fact and the fact that there are over 100 million PS4 owners, it does make sense from a business standpoint to make cross generation games. But Sony does need a game that compliments its newest system and show off the new features with flair innovation with fresh new mechanics and ideas. It would also be unplayable on the older systems because of technical limitations. If waves needed to be made, this would do it.
