Sonic Fans Think Unofficial Games Look Better Than Frontiers

The Gamer Writes "We got a first proper look at Sonic Frontiers this week. It's had a mixed reception, with some looking forward to the blue blur's first outing into an open world, but others fearful over how empty everything looks."

Yeah Sonic GT and Utopia might be fan games but they've managed to pull off the concept a lot better than SEGA, the main thing about the fan games I've noticed is the speed and flow when going through the levels. Even when it comes to things like rails they are in places where they look more natural, the mining cart rails in GT for example, the ones in Frontiers are just laughable, some are just hovering in the air like they are an object during development the devs forgot to delete or move.

I just don't know why SEGA keep trying to experiment when all we want is Sonic Adventure Remakes/Remasters or Sonic Adventure 3.

Hell even a Sonic Mania sequel.

Sonic frontiers looks like it was a fan project made in dreams on Playstation. It looks like a lot of open spaces that are empty and boring. When I saw the game I immediately thought of this game being on the Nintendo switch also so a lot of cutbacks had to be made. Popins, low textures, unpopulated worlds, a lot of performance issues normally like a lot of switch games. The switch port should have been made a lot later by a different dev team instead of with the other versions. There hasn't been a good sonic game in a very long time and they shouldn't have restricted the scope of what sonic frontiers could have been by making a switch version. I cant wait to buy the game for pc and I'm hoping it can entertain me.

What do you think of Sonic Omens? Have you played that one?

-Foxtrot1121d ago

I haven't played it but I've seen clips and even that looks better than this

It's unreal how many of these projects exist and SEGA just aren't competent enough

Bobertt1121d ago

If Sega had any brains they would release Sonic Adventure 3 with the 3rd Sonic movie.

phoenixwing1121d ago

To be fair Mario has the same problem of crap floating in the air but ppl give it a pass.

They think that way because it's the truth. You can see the character and soul in these fan projects, but Frontiers looks lifeless, lacking in both character and soul.

I don't care what excuses people have for Frontiers, there is no way a AAA company should be putting out a preview like that 5 months from release. Everything we saw of that preview was something you would expect to see from an early concept. I have seen people say that that is exactly what it was, but where is the logic in showing us stuff from the early part of it's development when the game is supposed to release in 5 months?

The only reason why anything that bad would be released to the public so close to release is because they have nothing better to show. There was honestly not a single thing about it I was impressed by. Some people are saying it looks pretty.....but does it really? The graphics here are nothing special and aesthetically it is kind of jarring to look at. Bland, watered down colours, horrible rails floating in the back ground, Sonic looking completely out of place with the world and awful pop ins and animations. Graphically, it is nothing special and aesthetically, its hideous.

annoyedgamer1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

The same can be said for GTA fan overhauls. The companies don't care and are just cashing in on consumers who buy now and think later.

darkrider1121d ago

The animation of sonic seems to have huge problems and some are missing. Don't understand how.

XxINFERNUSxX1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

Yeah they do. How about Sega just pay the people who make unofficial Sonic games if they can do a better job.

No shit... I just got the VR SW game digitally because its crazy $$ for disc.

F.I.S.T. and Forespoken i still have sealed so now I wont have to unseal them.

PapaBop199d ago

New PSVR 2 owners are in for a treat. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is amazing.

pwnmaster3000199d ago

Nice now I can see how truly bad forspoken was

MrBaskerville199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

The combat is good. But the open world is shit. Feels like a game where they had a good foundation but didn't know what to use it for.

Might be a hot take, but it's a lot like Sonic Frontiers. Good idea, but terrible use of open world.

andy85199d ago

It was good imo. Magic system and combat were very good. World traversal is some of the best I've played. Writing can be lacking but there's a lot of humour in it. I've always said this'll be a days gone situation where people only appreciate it when it's given away 'free'. The hate mostly seems to be from people who haven't even played it

Traecy199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

Totally agree with your comment. The gameplay was fun, the graphics are decent, the story is lacking but there is some humor. Most folks that were dissing the game didn't even play it.

MrNinosan199d ago

I actually liked Forspoken and had fun all the way til the Platinum trophy was achieved.

Christopher198d ago

So much unnecessary open world.

OldDuffer198d ago

I really liked it. Going in with low expectations, I was surprised to find a game I enjoyed. Traversal is a blast and I thought the combat was fun. The writing was a bit cringe in places, but I play games, it's a rare thing to get great writing and it didn't spoil it for me. I think plenty people will have more fun than they expect once they can try for free...but you need to get a couple of hours into it. If you can make it through that fud, your good!

There's a few in here I've wanted to try but not quite taken the plunge on.
I'm curious about Sonic, have wanted F.I.S.T. , Would try Coffee Talk and Phogs. Maybe even give WRC a try.
Pleased with this selection now.

TheNamelessOne199d ago

The Coffee Talk games are good. Wasn't a fan of FIST though.

monkey602199d ago

Shame to hear that. It's probably the one on this list I am most excited to play.

VivaLaManual198d ago

FIST is a very solid metroidvania.

gold_drake199d ago

forspoken haha.
but i might play it as long as its available.

ps2 classics are good.

Traecy199d ago

I played it back when it was first released, the gameplay is fun.
