Whoa... can that be right?
PS5 / 2240 units (cumulative 1,385,128 units)
PS5 Digital Edition / 453 units (cumulative 235,710 units)
Xbox Series X / 105 units (total 99469 units)
Xbox Series S / 6120 units (cumulative 105,408 units)

Series S beat all three combined... holy crap.

darkrider1121d ago

You still don't understand. Gamers buy what's available.... The series s got 100 k sold on Japan. It's non existent.

darthv721121d ago

Gamers buy what they want... Im not saying there arent some who will do as you say but they are usually few and far between. Most will continue to wait to get what it is they have their mind set on. And like ive said repeatedly, we may see more multi console ownership due to how cheap a series s is to get into 9th gen gaming. It compliments a ps5 so well.

Seeing as this is JP (where space can be an issue for some) the SS makes a perfectly logical buy due to its size. Performance wise it is holding its own and Im not hearing many complain about it. quite the opposite really as many are impressed with what it can do in such a small package.

gangsta_red1121d ago

This whole "gamers buy what's available" doesn't make a lot of sense.

Japanese must know that a lot of the PS niche titles aren't available on Xbox, so why would they still opt to buy an Xbox just because it's available?

There must be a lot more to it than just that excuse.

I personally don't buy another brand just because the one I really wanted is unavailable

Christopher1121d ago

***Japanese must know that a lot of the PS niche titles aren't available on Xbox, so why would they still opt to buy an Xbox just because it's available?***

Because they're gamers and they want to play next-gen games and they can't play them on another system so they do it on this other one. Isn't this what people have been saying "true" gamers have been doing? Playing games where they are available, not just on one piece of plastic?

gangsta_red1121d ago

@Christopher
"Isn't this what people have been saying "true" gamers have been doing?"

No, not when it comes to the japanese market. Xbox has had ZERO appeal in the Japanese market since forever. The system has been notoriously ridiculed for having extremely low to no sales, with systems collecting dust on store shelves.

And now all of a sudden they're just gamers who just want to game and will buy anything available?

thesoftware7301121d ago

@ Dark
You are starting to sound like a broken record man.

Did being available help the Atari Jaguar? Gamecube? The Dreamcast? The Xbox One? The Virtual boy? The Neo Geo? The Game Gear? Do you see why your argument is flawed? gamers are not stupid automatons just buying things they have no interest in, do you buy things that you don't have any interest in? did you buy an XS because you can't find a PS5?

Christopher1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

***And now all of a sudden they're just gamers who just want to game and will buy anything available?***

Literally, yes. I mean, if I wanted next-gen Elden Ring on a console, that would be about the only way I could do it in Japan, for example (if I didn't have a PC). It's also cheaper than all the other options out there.

People can easily become more interested in something they normally wouldn't buy when what they want just isn't at all available to them. That's kind of how supply and demand work. If there is no supply over here, but there is over there... eventually people will likely flow to where there is supply rather than paying much more for the high demand product (or, not even being able to get one).

I see this as a huge windfall for Microsoft where they can gain footing in an area where people had limited themselves in the past to specific products but now are being pushed to try new things and perhaps learn it's nice to have more than just Japanese products. Like true gamers should.

1Victor1121d ago

@ dark Japanese people same as everyone else LOVE BARGAINS and if stores making space had the SS for cheap 1/2 off or more they would buy it wouldn’t anyone 🤷🏿

gangsta_red1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

@christopher

I don't believe this market is rushing to get a Xbox S who's library mainly consists of cross gen multiplat games, which most can be played on PS4 which has a huge foothold there already.

I think it has more to do with the appeal the Xbox has gained with it's features (Game Pass) and possibly what is on the horizon game wise. I do agree, price wise is also a factor, i also want to say the size of the console is another reason. With a lot of japanese homes with limited space this is definitely a more convenient console to own.

hopefully more japanese developers see the traction Xbox is gaining over there and start to release more of their titles previously unavailable for Xbox.

Christopher1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

***I don't believe this market is rushing to get a Xbox S who's library mainly consists of cross gen multiplat games, which most can be played on PS4 which has a huge foothold there already.***

I wouldn't say rushing either. 6k sold in a week isn't a rush, IMHO. That's in a nation of 125m and an above-average population of gamers compared to most other nations. 6k is a drop in the bucket, but it's a bigger drop than before.

Overall, all of these figures are pretty anemic and shows supply shortage issues more than anything.

John_McClane1121d ago

I could have bought any of the consoles and I chose a Series S, and I haven't been disappointed, this thing is a beast

bradleejones1121d ago

Hey I'm a pretty hardcore PlayStation dude and I just got a gaming laptop. Would have bought a PS5 if I could get my hands on one. (And I still will but they aren't easy to get and I'm not supporting scalpers)

agnosticgamer1120d ago

What you are saying is usually true. Except when you factor Xbox brand and Japan together. Then what you are saying makes no sense.

itsmebryan1120d ago

@Darkrider
Did you buy a Xbox series S because it was available before the PS5? I had plenty of opportunities to buy a PS5
but, IInstead Iwaited for the Series X.

I'm not interested in PS games so there is no reason to buy a PS5 just because it was available.

Dreisdest1120d ago

So you're saying that gamers buy what's available regardless of whether they want it. Right. So by that logic, I would buy Battlefield 2042 because it's available at my local store even though I don't want it whatsoever? You might need to rethink your take here. Because the logic is...nonexistent.

Army_of_Darkness1120d ago

In my case, I've seen the series s and the X readily available at my local Walmart, but didn't have that impulse or interest to purchase either. Like why would I waste my money like that when I just want a ps5... People buy what they want, not what is available..... Unless you're a parent getting your kid a gaming console??

Christopher1121d ago

Yes, gamers did buy the only console available to purchase right now.

thesoftware7301121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

Christopher, What next-gen games are the Japanese gamers buying SS to play?

Almost all the games are cross-gen and on PS4, PS4 Pro, and PC. A lot of the more popular games are on Switch as well. When they have so many other avenues to play all the same games on different platforms they turn to the least popular option with the least Japanese support?

Just think for a min and you will see, that people might be a bit interested in Xbox and GP.

1121d ago
Christopher1121d ago

***Christopher, What next-gen games are the Japanese gamers buying SS to play?***

Elden Ring, which plays way better on Series S than on PS4. Higher resolution (1440p) with the same 30fps. And, the added benefit of access to other games at higher than PS4 resolution. And for a pretty low entry cost.

I'm literally telling people the exact same reason we've been told for a year now why people would buy a Series S. I'm very surprised to hear so much resistance. It's almost like there's a goal post being moved to try and make it explicitly about something else that we just don't know.

thesoftware7301121d ago

Actually the game runs fps wise best on PS4 Pro from what I understand.

So they bought a $300 system primarily for one cross gen game that run slightly better resolution? And other games that all they get is slight resolution bump...do you really believe that is the total reason?

Ok, good for MS then..the SS is becoming a hit.

Christopher1121d ago

***Actually the game runs fps wise best on PS4 Pro from what I understand.***

That console that isn't even charted and most people don't own?

***So they bought a $300 system primarily for one cross gen game that run slightly better resolution? And other games that all they get is slight resolution bump...do you really believe that is the total reason?***

You asked what game they would buy it for, I mention one as it's the most popular at the moment. Do you assume that's the only one they would play? Why wouldn't they then also try out Xbox exclusives? Why not every cross-gen game on what may be their only next-gen machine? Why are you limiting the capability of the Series S in your argument when all I did was answer your question of what game they would play on Series S at this moment?

darthv721121d ago

It's a shame Famitsu doesnt track online usage as we could see if the sales of Series S are directly tied to increase in GP subs in JP. Given the digital nature, it seems only obvious but also given the disdain the JP culture has held for xbox over the years makes you wonder why all of a sudden is there a change of heart?

Series has passed the lifetime sales of xbox one (which wasnt hard to do) and it has og xbox to pass next which was around 530k +/-. The biggest test to see if Series is really appealing to JP gamers is if it can pass the lifetime 360 numbers, which was 1.65m +/-. XBO took 7 years to get where its at, Series took 1.5 years to pass it.

Another interesting bit is how the X|S have a 50/50 split, but the PS5 has 85/15 with its disc to digital split.

Knushwood Butt1121d ago

I don't think PS4 Pros are manufactured any more and you certainly can't walk into a store and expect to find one in Japan.
I sold one of mine for almost as much as I paid for it new, after having owned it for several years.

Knushwood Butt1120d ago

@ itsmebryan

Who are you asking?

thesoftware7301121d ago

Wow! that is amazing.

The SS is really making a mark, no matter how anyone slices and dices it, MS made a good move putting the SS out there. I can see why it might sell a bit in japan as the small form factor is a selling point over there.

ChasterMies1121d ago

Or those chip factories could have been making chips for the Series X. Just sayin’.

S2Killinit1120d ago (Edited 1120d ago )

I think it was a terrible idea for them. Now they have to have two codes for each game this gen, and if they add a Pro line, THREE codes, with the S dragging down performance for all their games…

BUT. This way they can save face by claiming they are selling more units, even if one of them is basically not a full current gen console.

Outside_ofthe_Box1121d ago

To me this highlights that people were right in that the PS5 stock being severely limited is affecting it's performance in the charts given the fact the disc version of the PS5 has outsold the series XS + digital PS5 alone cumulative wise.

Y'all are saying the small form factor of the S but it has barely outsold the X total units wise. Prior to this week, S and X sales were 50/50 more or less cumulative wise. This points more to available vs the other consoles as opposed to new found interest in the S/Xbox imo.

Chip shortage isn't ending until 2024 so this trend will continue for the next 2 years regardless anyway.

darthv721121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

only thing i can think of is there has been some renewed interest in xbox. The XBO managed 120k in the 7 years it was on the market in JP. that is quite the downfall from the 360's 1.65m in its lifetime. And yet if there wasnt any interest, the Series would fair no better than the XBO, but it is. It could wind up being better than the og xbox (530k) but as it is, its already better than the xbo.

So those who are optimistic will just let it play out as things have only started for Series. It has all gen to move that needle and its price and form factor are just small part of the appeal. GAMES is where it really needs the most help.

Babadook71121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

"Whoa... can that be right?...

...Series S beat all three combined... holy crap."

If you would only try to understand the context... PS5 has sold 8x Xbox
1.4 million +
.2 million +
.1 million = 1.7 million
vs .1 million.

darthv721121d ago

I know... the holy crap part is that you NEVER see xb outsell ps in jp.... ever.
You would think if there was no units of ps5 to buy then consumers would just wait but... here we are.

S2Killinit1120d ago

@darth
It kind of proves that the numbers are not related to demand whatsoever, but supply. But by all means continue your xbox advertisement. Hope it makes your time spent worthwhile.

ABizzel11120d ago

They already said there was a stock supply issue with PS5 as just the week before it greatly outsold the Xbox consoles. However, the Series S is without question the more popular of the two Xbox consoles.

Microsoft has reclaimed the throne

badz1491120d ago

reclaim what was never theirs? how's that work?

itsmebryan1120d ago

@badz
I just find it interesting how so many said Microsoft was wrong about how well the Series S would sale. This is proving MS right.

blacktiger1120d ago

Correct beating their powerful hardware is actually embarrassing.

darkrider1121d ago

#thesoftware73. Gamers aren't stupid automaton? Do you think casual now anything about specs? Parents have any understanding? They buy what's available. It's cheaper and getting cheaper. They don't know they are getting a console that's barely more powerful then the upgrades of last gen... That's digital but got no space... That will always have the worst version of all games, sometimes worse then the upgrades. Many forgot that last gen all the gamers werent happy because of the lack of power of the ps4 and Xbox one. Tons of articles about that. Studios had huge problems running games. Everybody asking for more power but now because it's cheaper it's a good thing... The series s is light years behind the series x and less not forgot all the hate the ps5 got when some were making fun of the 8 treaflof. The weakstation. Remember? But now a 1080p console with 4 teraflops its great. Maybe for 2015 not to 2022

Christopher1121d ago

***Many forgot that last gen all the gamers werent happy because of the lack of power of the ps4 and Xbox one.***

Most gamers don't care about that. It's nice, but most gamers didn't go out and get One X and PS4 Pros because it had better graphics. They were fine with the base consoles because those people aren't hardcore but mainstream and not as focused on things like graphics compared to just the enjoyment factor of the games they play.

darkrider1121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

Agree 1000%. But here are all hardcore gamers. Do you remember all the rezgate news? All the news because one game run at 25 frames and another 29? All the cpu problems. All the news about this game more grass then another? All the news about some kind of secret sauce that would make everything good or give the advantage? The cloud, the dx, the tools and so many more? Now Microsoft built the most powerful console, because it is. Sony was smart the path they went, but Microsoft decided on brute force and all those problems are over. The series x is really Powerfull, but for me spending 299 on the series s is a complete waste of many, because it got all the problems of last gen and its even worse because it's digital and got 364 gigas of space in 2022. When you buy the ssd expansion it's more expensive then the x. Please. Casuals don't know nothing about this, but the hardcore gamers here? That's another thing.

John_McClane1121d ago

The S is not "light years" behind the X.

darkrider1121d ago

At least 3 times weaker. In reality is even more slower less ram. Much less bandwidth. The only thing close is the cpu. They are apart a gen. Microsoft try to sell it like a 1440p console but it runs much more games at 1080 dynamic.
