Konami isn't doing what you want, but it's making loads of money

Despite not putting out any Metal Gear or Silent Hill games, Konami is still raking it in.

ApocalypseShadow1143d ago

Not off of me. They have nothing for me to buy. Konami has so many IPS. But it's the same across the board with other companies. Companies with amazing classic franchises that are unused.

I'd gladly buy another well made Castlevania, a good Contra game. But hey, it's Konami. They don't seem to care much anymore.

NJShadow1143d ago

I've been going through MGS withdrawal for years. It's seriously killing me.

ApocalypseShadow1143d ago

A remake of remaster of the original Metal Gear from MSX I'd take. I'd take a redone metal gear 2 even though Kojima wasn't involved, I liked it.

As for Solid games, without Kojima, I won't buy any new ones. I stopped after 4 as that was a good ending to Snake. I'd be very surprised if they made a good one without him. But you never know.

ABizzel11143d ago

Konami needs to license out or sell off their IPs, and just keep their Pachinko machines, Yugioh, and PES Soccer since those are the only thing they're fully supporting (and their money makers).

That way they can also let their developers go since they're not producing games away, and move on to other teams / studios.

Chocoburger1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

Yeah I went through it as well, here's what I do:

- Listen to the soundtracks often.

- Play the games on a higher difficulty setting (unless if you already do this).

- Play side content, such as all the VR Missions in MGS1 and MGS2:S. Skateboarding in MGS2:S. Snake vs. Monkey in MGS3. MGO2 on PS3 is now brought back via fan servers. Get 100% completion in Peacewalker and V. And of course play Rising: Revegeance, and torture yourself getting all the Trophies / Achievements (I did it, and nearly went insane doing so!).

- Check out the spin offs such as Metal Gear AC!D 1 & 2. I avoided MGA for years, but eventually gave it a try and ended up completing the game 6 times. It definitely feels like if Metal Gear was a turn based game, and its actually a lot of fun, though it has a few critical flaws, its still very much worth playing. I had to beat the game 4 times until I finally understood the story, yeah, its really that much of an insane convoluted plot.

I have purposefully not played Metal Gear AC!D 2, simply because its the last game in the series I haven't played yet, and I have been 'saving it' for later. Which needs to be soon.

There is another side story game called Metal Gear Solid: Mobile. It was only for Nokia phones, and for decades no one could play it outside of original hardware (that had to be hacked). However, finally, recently someone created an emulator to play the entire game on your PC. Give it a shot.

- You can read the novelizations or look at art books. If you don't want to buy the books, you can search for them on https://u1lib.org

- Play other games, okay, so its true nothing can replace MGS, but still, play other games. Death Stranding has a strong MGS vibe to me (which obviously makes sense), and it definitely satisfied my MGS gaming desires at least a little bit. I've gone back and replayed the Splinter Cell games, and yeah, they don't hold up as well, but some portions of the game are fun to sneak through. There's a recent MGS parody game called UnMetal, if you're in the mood for a light-hearted game, look into it. On PS4 and PS Vita there is a game that is similar to MGS VR Missions, called Volume. There's not much story, but it does have plenty of short sneaky missions.

As an MGS fan myself, I went through it all, but you have to keep busy, and find alternatives. One last thing I will say is, that its okay for stories to end, and for game series to conclude. In fact, it should happen more often than it does. As much as it sucks to say, its okay for MGS to disappear, enjoy the memories, and the future replays, because there's truly nothing else like it.

Pepin1143d ago

Does make me wonder what the two proper games the publisher has in active development are, though...

porkChop1143d ago

They have a horror game in development with Bloober Team. There have also been rumours of a Silent Hill reboot. That could be what Bloober is making, though it could also be a separate game. I just don't see why Konami would make 2 separate horror games at the same time.

porkChop1143d ago

Kojima was involved with MG2. There was another sequel called Snake's Revenge that he wasn't involved with, which is actually why he made MG2.

ApocalypseShadow1142d ago

That's the one I was thinking of in my head. Snakes Revenge which was a sequel he didn't make. I called it 2 above. But yeah you're right on the correction since Kojima calls his MG2.

jBlakeeper1143d ago

These days in the game business it’s about finding your golden goose and milking it. Nothing more.

Konami is dead to me. They used to be one of the best but now they suck.

Unknown_Gamer57941142d ago

Yeah, and to think I used to view them as being toe-to-toe with Capcom for the longest time, but I guess the winner of that matchup was decided when one company stepped out of the ring to focus on their side hustle in Japanese casinos while the other has actually since ramped up production of its IPs.

At least Konami’s retro compilations are solid...however, when re-releases of old games are virtually their only major releases in an otherwise lengthy dry spell...I don’t know if I can consider that much more than a few drops in the bucket. Capcom does retro stuff too...and modern titles!

Knightofelemia1143d ago (Edited 1143d ago )

Konami has flipped the bird to all the fans and loyal gamers that have stuck around them from so long. Only thing Konami does now is release a broken soccer game and anniversary packs of their older titles like Contra and Castlevania. Konami should just sell off their gaming division to someone who will utilize the franchises so Konami can go back to sticking their head in the sand and make pachinko machines. And forget about their loyal fans who stuck around them. I remember the SNES the Konami logo sound you knew you were getting a good game even the same for the fans who had a Genesis at the time the sound meant a good game.

FanboysKiller1143d ago

They live in the past and too shy to acknowledge their problems.

360ICE1142d ago

You have to understand that to Konami this is not a problem. The priorities of a company in a capitalist economy is to maximize profits, often in a very short-term way.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos2d ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop2d ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

barom1d 22h ago

Ya'll are hyping up Expedition 33 too much. Reminder that FF XVI sold 3 million in a week and it took Expedition 33 approximately a month to get to that (33 days to reach 3.3 million).

thorstein1d 18h ago

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim2d ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn22d ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

Runechaz1d 17h ago

Every Pokémon game is also a Turn Base RPG.. and selling millions

andy852d ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Runechaz1d 17h ago

you can also look at the Pokemon game number

Tacoboto2d ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-642d ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…
