Gran Turismo 7 (PS5) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "When ignoring the half-baked always-online demands and microtransactions, Gran Turismo 7's in-depth simulation and offbeat attitude can be consistently enjoyed. The strange contrast between the realistic racing and the sincere corniness in its presentation feels like a breath of fresh air. There are some misgivings to find within its design, on and off the track, but Polyphony's meticulous craftmanship handedly surpasses them. GT7's history won't be considered spotless, especially around launch, but it will still serve as a reminder of the idiosyncratic details that make it stand out from the competition."

It's a miss. That polish that DP was known for is not up to snuff here. It's also really sad to see GT go the way of vulture transactions and even sadder for the fans/loyalists to defend it.

jukins1142d ago

Its clear you dont play it. . The polish is there and microtransactions arent even an issue. Maybe try playing something first before criticizing it

andy851142d ago

Can't really say that if you haven't played it (and I know that because the MTs are zero issue now) when you can make enough credits that would cost $30 in one hours driving. Anyone that would spend money is moronic when no cars are locked behind cash purchases. Just got my platinum trophy, 250 cars with $0 spent.

coolbeans1142d ago

So, what ought to be the proper response in your opinion? Because I *AGREE* that loyalists completely disregarding it is wrong. Although I wouldn't equate GT7's mtx "temptation level" to Deux Ex: Mankind Divided (probably the most useless mtx currency packs of all time/don't disrupt gameplay at all), it's not overriding the core experience. It's still annoying to see - especially in a E-rated game.

What's the proper response for a critic, then? If the overall experience, taking in the good and bad, is still insanely positive, does a written warning about the behavior suffice? Or is it ground for an automatic half-point or full point reduction?

Knushwood Butt1141d ago (Edited 1141d ago )

The MTs are unobtrusive and don't affect the gameplay at all.

What does affect the gameplay is the dire AI
Blocks the apex
Bunches up with other AI cars, then fan out to block the road when you approach
Deliberately swipes at you
Almost always makes contact with you when alongside them, even when you give them plenty of room
Straight up cheats
Uses this weird, almost nitro like ability where thdy suddenly get way superior acceleration, then suddenly back off for no reason at all
Crash physics generally don't apply to them
Sometimes come off the track ahead of you, only so they can blatantly ram you when rejoining the circuit

That, coupled with the fact that most events are catch the rabbit, means you often have to tangle with 19 of these, is making the game a real chore to play for me.

I was planning to do the bare minimum daily marathon every day to rack up roulette tickets, but I'm having a hard time motivating myself to even do that.

Returnal is calling.

“You'll feel haptic feedback for little gaps in the asphalt in one part of Tokyo Expressway, for example.”

I know the parts you speak of. Diggin’ it!

coolbeans1142d ago

Noticing the *thunk-thunk* matching the extra few inches in those gaps was an incredible sensation.

Anyone else feel like the credits payout is to generous now?
Like I own so many cars now with almost no effort.

EazyC1141d ago (Edited 1141d ago )

I did not like the Menus, they were all way too easy and the chase-the-rabbit style racing is SO anachronistic for a game that claims to be 'the real driving simulator'. The Missions are really cool though, I love how they're genuinely difficult. Same with the licences, they were brilliant fun. I really enjoy the physics model. The weather simulation is also fantastic (but for god's sake PD, add a radar BEFORE the race...or at least a forecast.)

The camera options are dire. I know that sounds nitpicky, but it is SO important for a racing sim game to have them. Us guys who are into this stuff put a lot of effort/money into making a rig, so why not let us adjust FoV etc? PD spent so much time on the interiors, it's such a shame they did such a lame job with the interior camera view options FORCING camera shake and only allowing minimal view tweaks.

Considering the longevity of this game will likely lie in Sport mode (and where most of the hardcore GT guys will be spending the next year+ in the game): They've got a great foundation for a brilliant online offering, but I feel a bit disappointed saying that because it very much buys into the philosophy of games as a service nonsense...pay now, get the game later.

PD need to find a way to make the excellent customisation USEFUL in Sport mode (not tuning, I mean the performance upgrades)...there should be an option for road cars to 'homologate' them into either Gr.3 or Gr.4 cars. Obvious candidates are the Viper 02 (turn it into something like the Viper GTS Oreca 2002), and the 2021 Honda Civic Type R (turn it into the Civic BTCC racecar). The penalty system needs overhauling. And to be honest, if they can do that and add new tracks, it's basically the perfect online racing experience.

coolbeans1141d ago

Although I was personally content with the basic camera options, most of these critiques sound fair. I'd push back on Menu races being easy once muscle cars came into the mix though. When you're within the suggested PP rating on Hard, tension bumps up between the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th place imo.

I suggest you copy/paste your comment here and send to Polyphony's email. I think they'd love feedback like this.

Is Xiaomi Coming to Gran Turismo?

A recent burst of activity on the social media channels of Gran Turismo's creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, has set some tongues wagging about the possibility of a new marque from a previously unrepresented nation to come to the game series: Xiaomi.

The first piece of the puzzle was a little bit of a m

It would be interesting. I’m all for it. Gran turismo is suppose to be the place to realistically drive cars from all make and models.

China has a whole bunch of interesting cars right now, so would be cool if they'd release a pack with a bunch of different brands, as well as a nice (fictional) China track ...

Gran Turismo 7’s next update includes four cars, launches 15th May

The usual update cycle has been broken, with a mid-month Gran Turismo 7 patch to include a Suzuki, a Honda, a Chevrolet Corvette and a Ferrari.

Aloymetal24d ago

Imagine how insane GT8 is gonna look. PD always pushing the hardware to its limits.

jukins24d ago

Hope they just wait for ps6 so nothing has to be held back.

derek23d ago

💯, love this game in vr, gotg for me so far.

Amplitude23d ago

I really wish they'd do a Gran Turismo Horizon. There's not enough arcade racers these days.
It's pretty much just Forza Horizon.

I want Citta di Aria track. Imagine that. Toughest, tightest track

RaiderNation23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Been shouting this for a while. I dont care if Polyphony ever adds another car to this game. Give us tracks!!! Especially city tracks that are "alive"! Where's Seattle? Where's Rome? Wheres Hong Kong? Hell they dont even have to be free! Release a track pack for 19.99 with like 4 new locations! I'd happily buy it!

INMATEofARKHAM23d ago

Its crazy to think Forza just added a track that's over 10 mile in lenght this week! The much beloved Fujimi Kaido that hasn't been seen since Forza 4.

repsahj23d ago

PD please include suzuki spresso next time!
