The Original PS3 Is The Most Hideous Console Ever Made

Sony has designed some beautiful consoles over the years. The monolithic PS2. The tastefully compact PSP Go. The delightfully dinky PocketStation. The absolutely pristine Pearl White PSP. But when it comes to aesthetics, the company has committed severe and unforgivable crimes against good taste—the worst of which is, by far, the original model PlayStation 3. The PS3 had some great games, but the hardware itself was offensive to the eyes and soul.

I disagree... I like the glossy piano black foreman grill design. It's def better looking that the PS5.

blackblades1155d ago

Agree, also like how you can close the USB port area and wasnt there a sd card slot cant remember. Anyways, I say the ps3 super slim was my worse, I didn't like the the top part of it.

dantesparda1155d ago

@darth

I disagree, I think the PS5 is better looking than the PS3, but the ugliest console BY FAR is the XSX! Its a sh!tty, cheap matte plastic looking box. I've seen dust bins with way more style than the XSX. And XSS isnt far behind. UGLY!

GrizzliS19871155d ago

The little children had no idea how much a regular blue ray player cost back then. PS3 was the best bang for the buck value tech you could buy

Shane Kim1155d ago

Dante

It's not the ugliest, but I just dislike when they don't even try. It's just a plain, simple orthotope.

Godmars2901155d ago

@GrizzliS1987:
It was more that PS2 played DVDs, a fact many owners were clueless about, with corresponding lack of notice to cost, just "Playable on PS2" stickers on anime DVDs, where Sony more actively advertised the PS3 played BR along with a price bump.

dumahim1155d ago

4 USB ports (plus 2 in back) Memory Stickstandard/Duo PRO, SD standard/mini, and CompactFlash(Type I, II).

redrum061155d ago

@dantesparda XSX ugly and ps5 good looking? Let me guess, you go wild on RGB lighting too dont you

Army_of_Darkness1154d ago

The PS3 super slim was like looking at cheaply made vomit. That is the ugliest console ever made! Whoever approved that design should be fired!

yeahokwhatever1154d ago

The 60GB PS3 had a multi-card reader and it was the most beautiful console/computer ever designed.

Babadook71154d ago

It’s possibly the most hideous PlayStation. IMO it’s a bit above the Xbox One and far better looking than the first Xbox.

I liked the glossy black and Spider-Man text. The flip up cover was nice. Personally, I've always found the xbox360 to be the ugliest.

RaidenBlack1154d ago

And here I thought/think the OG PS3 is the best looking gaming console.
With the Xbox 360 S (aka first revision) coming in at second place.
The third place is tied between PS5 Disc & Series X. (Both are different and are really good looking)
4th place is tied amongst OG X360, PS5 Digital & OG PS4.
5th place is tied amongst PS3 Slim (aka first revision), One S & One X
.
Most Boring looking : OG Xbox One aka Xbox One VCR

Father__Merrin1154d ago

xbox 360 premium with the silver accent looked pretty good i had the core version. miss them days

Sunny_D1154d ago

I liked the 360 slim redesign they had a few years later.

Wrex3691155d ago

I think i agree actually. A big part of my hold off on getting a PS5 is the aesthetic. It is so damn garish to look at honestly. Thing is an eye sore.

MoonConquistador1154d ago

Are you sure it isn't more lack of availability lol.

The thing is a monstrous size, but it still looks mighty pretty under my TV.

You can also change the faceplates etc. Worst excuse ever for not owning a PS 5.

Nitrox1154d ago

Everyone has different taste and design choices for their gaming area. PS5 might not blend in well with all rooms. I get it.

Hard not to see this comment as a little over dramatic though. Do you also prefer the look of a 1992 mustang over the newer ones?

andy851155d ago

Personally I think the PS5 is by far the best looking playstation. Especially the controller. But it's definitely subjective with these things. I just got tired of black, dull looking consoles. I normally sell and upgrade to a LE console once one releases for that reason

SyntheticForm1155d ago

I agree.

The only thing I didn't like about PS3's design was how it strayed from the classic PlayStation font with the logo. Some things are better left untouched.

z2g1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

oof. i strongly disagree. i still have my OG ps3. it looks really dated now to me and the silvery chrome bits look cheesy. its definitely not a "timeless" design. I don't really love the ps5 design either, and i struggle to place it in my setup without it demanding all of the attention, but i like it more than the ps3. I think the ps4 had the right idea with keeping it simple and elegant with a touch of futurism.

People will hate me for saying this, but out of all the recent console designs, my favorite is the Series X. its dead simple but still has little flourishes that are cool (like the green gradient inside the top vent). It pretty much disappears into the entertainment center without calling much attention to itself, and to be honest - those are the designs i like the most... just like my receiver amp etc. makes it feel like less of a toy/gimmick and more of a piece of equipment.

redrum061153d ago

Exactly, the XSX is by far the better looking console, because it doesn’t scream “HEY LOOK YOU I’M A GAMING CONSOLE” like the ps5 imo, but hey, to each their own.

ChasterMies1155d ago

Agree 100%. Back in the day, the PS3 was an affordable Blu-Ray player and I knew at least a few home theater enthusiasts who were proud to show off this glossy beast.

Christopher1154d ago

You leave my pop-collar Elvis impersonator console alone!

darthv721154d ago

I think the better debate would be... vertical or horizontal?

for me it depends on the system. I have my PS5/SX vertical while i have my Pro/One X horizontal. I do like the look of some systems in upright. Like the og 360 and og PS3 while the slims looked better flat.

That title goes to Xbox One.

darthv721155d ago

well... the xbo (vcr model) was rather uninspiring... but not hideous. It was very safe compared to the likes of the bulky og xbox and the curved 360. the subsequent S and X models were no better in terms of aesthetics but they certainly were more compact.

Jin_Sakai1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

Xbox One was a bulky, ugly, and boring design. PS3 while also bulky at least had a decent design to it. Xbox One S/X looked great imo. Series X is meh but it’s all black and disappears in my entertainment stand.

dantesparda1155d ago

And once again, I disagree, I think the original XB1 looks better than the XB1X, XSX and XSS. The original Xbox while big looked fine for its time as did the 360. And the PS2 isn't exactly a good looking system with that bs grille design yet people seem to be fine with that, F the internet and their opinion!

RedDevils1155d ago

I would say all American console look hideous, from the Atari to xbox. Not one I found the Japanese look ugly, maybe the PS3 super slim look which is the worst playstation I seen.

darthv721155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

@dante... then you actually agree with what I said. Reread it if you dont believe me.

And to your comment above about XSX, it would look better in a borg theme since it has that cube-ish shape. I'm going to get a skin for mine.

ChubbyBlade1155d ago

How is a black box ugly. You could say it’s uninspired or boring but I think it needs something more defining to be ugly imo.

MasterChief36241154d ago

Yeah. It's pretty gross. The Xbox 360 was simple but had a wonderful design. And I especially loved how the original UI actually reflected the concave curves! It's unfortunate they moved away from that. A very underrated concept!

CaptainHenry9161154d ago (Edited 1154d ago )

That title goes to the XSX/XSS just meh, plain, and nothing special. It's like they didn't even try

Orchard1155d ago

I disagree. It's not the best looking PS console by a long stretch, but it looks better than the PS5. The glossy piano black exterior is slick looking, and the (launch) silver trim was great. It definitely got a bit worse when they started replacing that part with cheaper plastic and later just black - but the box still looks great, better than the subsequent PS3 slim & super slim.

The only annoying part for me, and this is a complaint I still have with PS5, was the convex top. I like to sit my controller on top of my consoles as well as stack sometimes so being flat is a win.

But it still looks 10x better than the PS5, in terms of shape, size and color.

blackblades1155d ago

I dont like stacking, its could actually damage the consoles.

Orchard1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

Shrug, I’ve been doing it since the PS2 without issue.

Plus right now the stacking would be a Switch :p hard for that thing to damage anything.

But also being able to easily sit controllers on top is a nice plus.

I still have my PS3 sitting on my stand for playing PS1/2/3 games, still looks great to this day and doesn’t look out of place at all. Same couldn’t be said if you put a Wii or launch 360 back on there.

MasterChief36241154d ago

@Orchard I honestly have no idea why you are getting disagreed with so hard about stacking... I know ventilation is an issue with some consoles, but I don't see the harm in putting, say, a Wii on top of a Wii U, a PS2 on top of the Wii. And especially if you're talking about controllers...

Unless people are talking about cosmetic damage, and that's fair. But I don't personally mind that. I know I'm in the minority there, though.

Knightofelemia1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

You must be blind the PS5 looks futuristic with it's design it ditches the traditional boxiness look consoles have been using. And if you're done looking at the white you can change the plastic shells to a different colour. As for putting controllers on top of your consoles hey go right a head if you like them marked up then do it. I have both a PS5 and a Series X and honestly I like the look of the PS5 again to me it looks futuristic. The Series X I am not sure if I want to put a can of beer in it to keep the beer cold or put a game in it.

CDbiggen1155d ago

It's one of those things you think looks futuristic, but in ten or so years you'll be laughing at.

SurgicalMenace1155d ago

Yeah, the covers are nice, I got the black one. I like the white also. Variety is always a good thing.

CrimsonIdol1154d ago

Dude, it looks like a mid-2000s air conditioner that's trying to look futuristic.

Silly gameAr1155d ago

But also the best BC console ever made.

Orchard1155d ago

Only if you got it in the first year, for the vast majority of consumers it was not much of a BC console since launch model sales were low due to the crazy high price.

Silly gameAr1155d ago

So, to have fully functional BC built into the console wasn't worth the high price? Dang, in that case, I guess the PS3 was ahead of it's time and should have came out this gen.

People love their BC.

Orchard1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

It's a well known fact that the PS3 was horribly priced at launch, Sony themselves have even acknowledged this since.

The two models at launch were priced at $499 and $599, in 2022 with inflation, they would be $692 and $831 today. No about of backwards compatibility justifies that price.

BC when it requires hardware is a terrible idea (see above pricing). There's also a reason why we don't do HW back compat anymore in modern consoles. Fortunately modern consoles like the XSX and to lesser extent, PS5, are powerful enough to run older generations via software emulation.

There is a reason why the PS3 launch was so slow, and why they dropped the price so quickly. You can't rewrite history 🤷

ApocalypseShadow1155d ago

Article says "original" PS3. BC lasted longer than the first year even with PS2 emulation and the slim and super slim still played PS1 games.

Launch model PS3 units sold just as well as Xbox in its first year. To say Sony's sales were low would be stating Microsoft's first year sales numbers were low too. Which is it?

Outside_ofthe_Box1155d ago

"No about of backwards compatibility justifies that price."

PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player at the time. That alone justifies the price, but the PS3 was rich with other features that the competition lacked so the price was more than justified. It was very expensive, but not overpriced. Sony took a ridiculous loss on each console even at the expensive price...

Silly gameAr1155d ago

That doesn't change the fact that it was the best BC console back then, and right now too, actually.

I don't know why you're trying to bring sales and price into it. I was around doing the PS3 days, so I remember the doom and gloom, but that still doesn't change the fact. They can call it ugly, but that also doesn't change the fact that the PS3 was one of the most feature rich consoles that ever came out.

Orchard1155d ago

@Apocalypse It’s talking about the original in terms of visual design. There were PS3 phats that did not feature the same back compat as the launch PS3 phat. With each iteration they effectively strip mined away part of the back compat story.

I just checked the aligned sales chart, the PS3 did not match the 360 in it’s first year.

@outside That’s true, but most gamers don’t care. Especially back in that timeframe, the majority of folk didn’t even have a HD TV yet. A lot of the cost also came from the massively over engineered CELL processor. Gotta recoup those R&D dollars somehow.

@Silly I brought sales into it because to get the REAL back compat machine you had to buy within the first year, and not many did. Therefore my statement is true, it was a good back compat machine if you got it in that period, but most didn’t. The majority of PS3 sales were the stripped down version. Go see how much true back compat models are going for on eBay right now…

Not sure I’d call it the best for back compat though, maybe the OG model, but the stuff Microsoft has been doing with back compat is far more impressive from a technical POV.

“the fact that the PS3 was one of the most feature rich consoles that ever came out.”

I’d find it hard to agree with that statement. At launch it was abysmal. We didn’t even get in game XMB until later in 2008. Trophies also weren’t around at launch.

And in terms of feature richness, the PS4 and 5 (and likely any other modern console) destroy it in terms of features - which is to be expected.

Knushwood Butt1155d ago

It was expensive, but well future proofed:

blu-ray, dvd, cd, sacd support
hdmi
4 usb ports

Tapani1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

I have two phats which run natively PS1 and PS2 apps, one is for spare parts. Both work, but are loud, so the one I'm using is in another room, around 11 meters away. 100% silent. PS3 controller works great through the walls! I need an extra one in case the laser or battery dies. To me, those old games are just so frikkin magical.

SurgicalMenace1155d ago

Honestly, it was priced perfectly, to me. After adding every component on the 360 to match it, you were actually paying more.

1155d ago
NJShadow1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

BC existed beyond the first year. From the launch model with the actual BC hardware in it, into the next iteration where the BC was software-based. I believe BC for PS2 made it a good 2-3 years post-launch, and PSOne was always there, so that BC never actually left.

Nintendo used to be pretty good about backwards compatibility. GBC working with GB, GBA working with GBC and GB, DS working with GBA, 3DS working with DS, Wii (initially) working with Gamecube, Wii U working with Wii. The Switch I think is the first console of theirs to not have any backwards compatibility since the N64. Gamecube had the Game Boy Player, so that's what I'm referencing there.

And when you add in the Virtual Console, especially on the Wii, Nintendo deserveD a lot of credit. Unfortunately the Switch really is the end of that sort of era... Now our Virtual Console is a perpetual service where you never actually own the games. So far we haven't seen any leave the service, but it's only a matter of time, I think. It's very frustrating.

Sorry, a bit of a tangent. The original PS3 models were good, yes, with PS1 and PS2!

The Xbox Series X/S is great, too, with being able to play all Xbox One games, a good deal of Xbox 360 games, and... a paltry selection of Xbox Original games. But anyways. Nintendo went from being the gold standard of backwards compatibility, to being probably the biggest joke (especially since Sony announced that new PS plus that allows you to play PS1, PS2, PS3 games. In addition to the complete library of PS4 games we can already play on it!)

Knightofelemia1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

I have seen uglier consoles Virtual Boy, Magnavox Odyssey, Apple Pippin, Stadia, The Sega Genesis when you add the 32X and Model 2 Sega CD with it, Atari Jaguar with the Jaguar CD attached to it looks like a toilet. The AT Games Genesis machines, those ugly Famiclone machines, Shitty Genesis clones, Tiger R Zone.

I like the look of the fat PS3 only thing I hate is that it has a design flaw with poor circulation of air and the fact the power supply had a metal shield which made things hot. On top of that the fan sat underneath the power supply so you had all that hot air circulating around. Which all of that caused the YLOD I love my PS3 slim only ugly PS3 I hate is the Super Slim PS3. It just looks real cheap and feels real cheap the sliding top looked like the corrugated cardboard you get in lightbulb packs. At the time the PS3 fat looked monolithic when standing up I still have my 40 gig fat might not have that piano finish like the other PS3's but I enjoy it. You want an ugly PS3 the Super Slim model is your candidate. The PS3 slim and fat PS3 look way better then that PS3 model.
