Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition Review - Iconic Yet Underserved [Wccftech]

Unfortunately, we aren't in the timeline where Square Enix gave Chrono Cross the treatment it deserves for a full remaster.

Having played the original not too long ago I can tell you definitively that this score is so off the mark it’s not even funny.

Ryushaa1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

I will not read the article or give this site the pleasure of a click. I will just say this: A game with a score bellow 5 means a game bellow average. An average game would be just bland, non-innovative, boring and maybe (maybe) with a few bugs.
A score of 4.5 would mean this remaster broke things the original game had, such as bugs not present at the initial release, mechanics ripped off, content cut and maybe changed story. There is any of this in the remaster? No? Then I have nothing more to say.

MadLad1154d ago

I did.

They aren't reviewing it as a game. They give a lot of insight into the original game within the review and say that they enjoy it.
They're reviewing the remaster, which is highly lackluster with barely touching anything from the original, itself, and didn't address issues with the original release.

So basically it's not a remaster. It's just a rerelease with some assets changed.

pietro12121154d ago

Which is most of Square’s remasters tbh with the exception of a few FF remasters and Neir R.

FinalFantasyFanatic1154d ago

Square-Enix doesn't do good ports of their games, as far as I can remember, most of them had to be fixed or fans ended up making fan patches/mods that corrected the issues.

ZwVw1154d ago

Apparently it is. There's absolutely no rationalizing as to why this so-called "Remaster" is dropping to as low as 15 fps during battle sequences.

Ryushaa1154d ago

God damn it. They manage to broke a PS1 game.

RedDevils1154d ago

I would just get an emulator and play it in 4k or 5k lol

gold_drake1154d ago

i saw someone play it on the ps5 and the framerate is all over the place. especially in battle. we're talking about 10 to 15 fps at times.

its a shame really.

VersusDMC1154d ago

I googled the low frame rate and there are reports of variable frame rate during battles...which is inexcusable. Charging money for a worse version. FF9 and FF8 remasters are quality and the only version i will play from now on so i don't know why they dropped the ball here.

CosmicTurtle1154d ago

Not played the 9 remaster. I thought FF8 was fine it had some quality of life improvements and some updated models, but it had incredibly blurry backgrounds and for some reason did not have analogue controls or rumble (both available on ps1). : in the end I up got the OG PC version for a replay by installing mods to enhanced the backgrounds, models and music; the modding scene did a better job with the backgrounds which are such an important part of the experience for me. Also that version has the Pocketstation chocobo game.

I think remasters should come with options like m2 ports, then you can have things like OG models and fonts.

I liked the FFXII and X ports a lot though.

AKS1154d ago

How could they screw up such an incredible game this badly? The title screen song of the original was probably worth a few points alone. How do you have the quality of the original in your hands and produce this? The Chrono games are classics from the golden era of JRPGs. Very disappointing.

Knightofelemia1154d ago

Maybe I will just wait for The Radical Dreamers to go on sale and just stick to the original.

Why Are So Many Remasters Sub-Par At Launch?

Remasters are fantastic, but they're also a little bit weird. They give us the chance to revisit some of our favourite games from our childhood, give new players the opportunity to share in our experiences, and sometimes they represent the first time a game is getting an international release. But why are they so inconsistent.

Lazyness money grabbing sums it up. Definetly when the game gets remastered for the 2nd time like symphonia. SR3 remaster they went in and touched it up more then a supposedly remaster would. Lately there been remakes insteadve remasters and Namco shouldve remade symphonia after tales of arise success insteadve a 2nd remaster. I'll be damn of they released a 3rd insteadve a remake. With the lasted they should had done a touch up like SR3 did and fix the issues amongst others problems or a remake like RE
