Serious question; are there a lot of wealthy people buying up items every month to fund the game, or is the community just massive enough to buy a ton of inexpensive things to keep the funds going? How is it possible for them to raise millions in a short amount of time for the last decade? Seems like they raise several million each couple of months every time we get these updates. Just a baseless theory, but what if this was some kind of money laundering scheme?

I know many people in game who have spent over 1k/
I also know someone who spent around 7k. I heard theres ppl who have crossed the 15k mark.
No idea why someone would do that.

Many of them do ship meets, those ships they bring range from 400 to 900 dollars each.

The game has some serious whales.

And obviously outside investment as well i think.

At this point things have moved well past sunk cost fallacy. it has become Stockholm syndrome. The backers have become sympathetic to their money's captors. I sincerely hope it releases and is everything people want.. but... I can't see this possible living up to half a billion worth of hype.
