LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles Sales Disappoint

Kotaku writes: "Couple of sad stories for you today, PS3 owners. One involving a cute little title that should never have been thrust into the limelight as a system seller. The other, a gorgeous tactical RPG."

PirateThom5627d ago

LittleBigPlanet Sales Disappoint, Valkyria Chronicles sales are about right

Nathan Drake5627d ago

They completely ignored the abysmal sales of Banjo Kazooie,Lips, and You're In The Movies.

PirateThom5627d ago

It's Kotaku, don't forget they're scum. I didn't click the link, just fixed their title.

Nathan Drake5627d ago

Oh no,I'll never forget they're one of the worst gaming blogs out there

fufotrufo5627d ago

Nathan Drake..share with us Banjo Kazooie,Lips, and You're In The Movies Nov sales numbers please..i think you are the only one that knows them

Nathan Drake5627d ago

Banjo=Less than 100k
Lips=Less than 100k
You're In The Movies=Less than 100k

I'm pretty sure Rare are next on the chopping block,my prediction is April 09

PirateThom5627d ago

If they haven't been tracked by NPD, it means they sold less than 100k copies.

fufotrufo5627d ago (Edited 5627d ago )

Oh thanks for those numbers you made out of your butt...seems pretty accurate to me!!

so if all those tittles sold less than 100k.. then what names should Valkyria (33k) and LBP (140K) get?

Catastrophic?

@ Pirate Thorn

Sorry if I'm mistaken ... but LBP NOV sales were not tracked by NPD, and it still sold 140 k according to sony ... How did LBP sales exceeded 100 k if it wasn't tracked by NPD?

sunnygrg5627d ago (Edited 5627d ago )

lbp sold 200K+ during the last 4 days of the month of October. That game will have huge legs. New PS3 owners will no doubt be picking it up and the install base is only growing, not decreasing due to reasons such as hardware failures.

Santos5627d ago

nathan u should work for vg chartz

Seraphim5627d ago

Unfortunately you are right about Valkyria Chronicles. For an RPG 100-250k is actually decent. About 250k+ is really good-great. You have to figure that Sega only expects to sell about 150k copies tops, in the US. As sad as it is it's very probable. RPGs are still a niche genre but it's just pathetic that more PS3 gamers don't pick this game up. It's an absolutely brilliant title that any gamer can pick up and enjoy...

As for LBP. Yeah, last I saw it was doing quite well for itself. And I wouldn't be surprised to see it packaged w/ the PS3 sometime in 09 to further strengthen sales...

ofx3605627d ago (Edited 5627d ago )

It is true that they forgot the xbox games but wait its kotaku... BUT let me add, LBP was "hyped" to be one hell of a big seller and was supposed to move systems so kotaku wasn't wrong there. Valkyria's sales are not as disappointing because no one expected that to be a big seller even though its a good game. Those "360 games"(more like sucky ps3 game clones) on the other hand all suck and NO ONE expected those to do ANYTHING.

littletad5627d ago

Show us a link, otherwise your just typing numbers.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5627d ago

I'm a bit confused by this article. are those lbp sales just for a certain region? Cuz i'm pretty sure lbp has sold more than a million copies so far.

http://vgchartz.com/games/g...

ezcex5627d ago

people don't buy a ps3 because of bluray. one reason, its because people don't research. If they researched, they would really find out that the ps3 is the best bluray player out there. If people researched, they would have found out the the ps3 is a better buy over the 360. And that kids is why people dont buy a ps3 for blu-ray. Consumers are dumb, and do not do their research.

Viper75627d ago

Hmm acording to VGcharst thats not really all that accurate, it seems its doing pretty well in Europe roughly 84k last week. Hopefully this is one of those games that will sell pretty well for whole its lifespan instead of being forgotten. Its pretty casual and perfect for kids (thats if they dont get to play a level that is yet to be moderated)

as for UK and US they seem to not be really the target audience this game is looking for (it only seems shooters and sports are only thing that sells in these 2 countries)

sonyandcher5627d ago

Jiminy crickets - LBP has sold over 1 million worldwide in 6 weeks -

http://translate.google.com...

Sick and tired of kotaku, just look at their last 20 posts and its Aaron Greenberg says this and that mixed in with what they hate about something on the PS3. Such selective journalistic Myopia is annoying.

I have both Xbox 360 and PS3 and wrote an entertainment articles in Ireland for 3 years in the regional rags and I tell you these guys are getting freebies to the hilt (I did when I wrote reviews) and they really are trying to "change the playing field". They are not even trying to hide it.

Bob Dole5627d ago

Bob Dole reads "Kotaku writes" and stops right there.

NEXT!!

gaffyh5627d ago

According to VGChartz (yes I know it's not accurate):

Lips - 190,000 (US and EU)
Banjo - 270,000 (US and EU)
You're in the Movies - 80,000 (US and EU)

LittleBigPlanet - 1,110,000 (worldwide)

SL1M DADDY5627d ago

One thing that I am sure of is that sales do not make a game great and many great games do not always sell. As for the two that Kotaku mention here, they are both awesome games IMHO and no matter what they sell overall, they have been fun for me. In LBP, I must have over 100 hours already of time on that game. It is insane the amount of time you can spend playing and creating.

prowiew5627d ago

As an ps3 owner, I ask the same question to other ps3 owners. Why we dont buy games? In my case, I think it is because every multiplatform game I buy it for 360. But really, i dont understand. In 2008 I read that wii has 41 games in the top 10, 360 has 36 and ps3 only 15. Almost the same as DS that has 11. Why is that?

ceedubya95627d ago

You said:

"Unfortunately you are right about Valkyria Chronicles. For an RPG 100-250k is actually decent. About 250k+ is really good-great."

I'm glad you said this. Yet plenty of people on this site call all of the 360 JRPGs flops because they don't sell 1 million copies.

Anyway, back on topic. I recently bought LBP. Played it a little so far. Haven't spent a lot of time messing around with it. Definitely seems like a game that you can come back to from time to time. I've spent most of my PS3 gaming time lately playing Persona 4 though (got the 60 gig console). Haven't touched LBP, R2, or any of my 360 games since I got it.

blackpanther255627d ago (Edited 5627d ago )

to tell you the truth..........a lot of people buy the ps3 just to say they have it. My cousin has a ps3 and only has 2 sports games and his nephew has none (mind you they live in the same house so there are two ps3 in that household). One of my friends also has a ps3 but buys only multiplatform games for it (even though his brother has a 360 next door). It is people like that, that don't buy the games they should. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people like them.

EDIT:@the above post^
yeah your right250k for a rpg is good, but we are talking about games that have the epic square-enix logo on them lol. Yeah like you said 250k is not bad, but best believe if the games had a better review score (or was better period) more people would have bought the game instead of renting it or playing it at a friends house.

lol i been cheacking on sale and it seems that only the final fantasy name sales like crazy lol. i take back the first sentence of my post.lol

Marquis_de_Sade5626d ago

Nathan Drake, were any of those games you listed hyped up as system sellers? LBP is a great game, if you're really that insecure enough about your console/game to constantly have to resort to slamming the competition, maybe you should think about why you bought said console/game in the 1st place.

ravinash5626d ago

LBP and Valkyria Chronicles are two very good games.
Valkyria Chronicles may only appeal to some people, but I'm surprised at how little I see it around the place. If you go into the store, you really have to look for it.

XxZxX5626d ago (Edited 5626d ago )

LBP still selling. What's the point jumping in to the conclusion so early?

Danja5626d ago

LBP has been selling 100-150k every single week so it's not like the game has just stop selling all together...

thats what you call legs...

look at Uncharted thatgame started off at 87K and now it has sold 2.2 million

DaTruth5626d ago

VGChartz had good PS3 news for months and PS3 owners literally kicked it off the site. Now good 360 news comes on VG and Lo and behold it's back on here again. Please stop with that talk of PS3 owners liking VG when it's favourable cause we're the ones who kicked it off here when it was giving us favourable numbers.

Not surprised about Valkyria. I hadn't even heard of it until a friend bought it a couple weeks after it came out.

Hasn't LBP already sold over a million? Didn't realize million sellers count as flops.

DJ5627d ago

Same with Motorstorm 2, another "flop". So long as Sony keeps advertising, these games will do fine. Better to push for additional sales after the Holiday season. Right now there's just a little too much competition.

Hell, they're still advertising games like Warhawk and Uncharted, so it's obvious why developers like SCE so much.

Panthers5627d ago

Yea Im going to be gettin Valkyria Chronicles after seeing the reviews from everyone (including the people here)

That game came out of nowhere. It needs to be advertised more.

Doctor Strange5627d ago

You will not be disappointed, great rpg with a really good story too.

Panthers5627d ago

So ive heard. I convinced my friend to get it too. He loves RPGs and is wondering where in the hell the PS3 RPGs are.

I also still need to get LBP. Im so slack.

ceedubya95627d ago

Anyone that's been on the fence about getting Pacific Rift, Best Buy is selling it for 40 bucks this week. Definitely a great time to buy it.

Monchichi0255627d ago

LBP has "NOT" sold over a million. It is far from it truthfully. The million sales figure came from VGCharts and has been debunked since then.

Marquis_de_Sade5626d ago

Monchichi025, you must remember, when VGchartz reports good X360 sales it's fake, but decent PS3 game sales are 100% accurate. At least that's what I gather from people on here

Megaton5626d ago

If it's VGChartz then I agree it's bull. I just remember skimming through articles around here and seeing one about LBP selling 1 mil. That trojan-filled site couldn't get numbers correct if their lives depended on it.

Jihaad_cpt5626d ago

I just picked up Valkyria Chronicles, I love it. However tactical-RPG's tend to not sell very well. Which is a shame because it is a beautiful game, I recommend it

MorganX5626d ago (Edited 5626d ago )

I recommend Valkyria too. Most beautiful game out there. Great tactical RPG. Probably hurt a little by the fantasy/nazi aspect. It think they could have gone a little harder core and done better. Sometimes when the subject matter is going against Nazis, it's best to go all out. Good versus pure evil. If you tiptoe, you usually don't do well.

Would love to see this engine in a Fantasy D&D type tactical RPG. Who needs Final Fantasy. Anyway, if you have a PS3, pick this one up in the bargain bin. It's a Showcase Title.

popup5626d ago

Put out a film like 2001 for today's audience and it would flop as being simply too hard to sit still with for an hour and a half while 'nothing happens'. No wonder LBP was less than stellar, it requires imagination, creativity and artistic ability for an audience and when was the last time you heard of a gamer possessing those qualities?

Videogames attempted to grow up but the toy guns are still the kiddies favorite :(

cayal5626d ago

"Hasn't LBP sold over a million"

Yes it has, but don't let that fact get in the way of 360 fanboys.

MorganX5626d ago

In defense of gamers, we live a busy life and sometimes you just want to jump in and have fun. I haven't tried LBP yet, I'm tempted, diggin' the sackboy costumes. But just lookit at it and reading reviews I can't get a feel for the game and whether I'm remotely interested in its gameplay. If I have to be artistic to get value out of it, I'm probably not interested. If it's too much like homework, or work, why bother? I'm just sayin'

People buy games they want to play, you can push the envelope, but at the end of the day you have to deliver games people want to play.

ravinash5626d ago

I'm not a big fan of platform games in general, so its not often a game like that which I enjoy. but LBP is a really fun game with a quirky sense of humor.
The game has plenty of levels on the CD and all the level people have publish on the network keeps the game fresh.
Oh, and its a good game to play with your girlfriend.

Oh Luke Plunkett. Truly a journalist of the highest pedigree. -.-

Oh dear..I seemed to have made myself vomit with my own sarcasm. Be back later.

Millah5627d ago

Whoever wrote that article is a tool. srsly. i'm not saying that the sales were excellent, but how he wrote the article was just major dbaggery.

Nathan Drake5627d ago

You actually expected a well written article from Kotaku?

Rob0g0rilla5627d ago (Edited 5627d ago )

Well, that's basically why LBP isn't selling. Especially when it's on a console with hardcore gamers for the most part. It's still one of the best games I have played this year. I never really liked Valkyria Chronicles. It's not my type of game.

Nice picture btw. I didn't notice the word "FLOP" was in that picture. Can't wait to see who's submitting this.

@ Le-mo

Agreed. You can't judge a book by it's cover. People do anyways and developers will continue to make more FPS that have us shooting Nazis, monsters, or aliens with a recycled plot like we have been for the last 4+ years.

Why don't these guys talk about that? Do they not realize that? It would be a lot more interesting then having these guys point the finger on a GOOD and new innovative game is doing bad.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d 15h ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 2h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX2d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney20h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

1d 19h ago
fsfsxii1d 21h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno1d 19h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville54d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi54d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein54d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos54d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein53d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan54d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long54d ago
