Does the PS3 really need saving?

The recent NPD hardware sales figures have lead to some labeling the PS3 "a sinking ship" that is "dying on the shelves." But is it really all that bad for Sony and the PS3 or is there some light at the end of the tunnel?

The ps3 IS dead. You either know this, like I do, or you don't. Obviously by your neutrally positive comments, you don't understand the ps3's current situation. Let me educate you:

The ps3 is so dead, that it's not even funny. My cat, dog, and son all got near my ps3 and they died. The ps3 is so dead, it kills other living things. Not only that, it sucker punched me and then choked me until I passed out. When I came too, there was a trail of wires leading out the front door. Through my window i can hear the screams of people who are crossing paths with my ps3; obviously they won't live very long.

I personally saw thousands, maybe tens of hundreds of people all returning their ps3's because it is selling so poorly. Just like GM and Chrysler cars, people are returning them in droves because of the poor outlook of the company that makes them. If something doesn't sell well in this day and age, people return it. Look at the housing market... i mean people were even bringing their houses back to the bank because other people weren't buying houses!!

I hope you understand now how grave this situation is. Wherever you get the chance, you need to shout from the rooftops that the ps3 is dead. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, and last but not least, do NOT be reasonable. The ps3 looks for reasonable people and takes advantage of them, just like the RROD but much, much worse.

This isn't the old days of garage-videogame consoles. If you truly think that the PS3 is dead, then you have very little understanding of what it was that made Sony today, little clue as to long-term investment, and also the inability to use math across the scale of time.

All of you should bookmark the blogs and articles that love to get hits by saying Sony is dead, and then repost them via email to these writers next year.

maybe it doesn't. I don't know. This will fully depend on Sony computer entertainment's strategy. There are three types of generic strategies - so says Michael Porter. These are cost leadership, differentiator, and segmentation strategy (niche market). Without following either cost or a differentiator strategy, a company risks being stuck in the middle with no clear vision.

Bottom line is that because the PS3 is seen as premium product that offers a certain competitive advantage (wifi, harddrive, better games in 2008 - see IGN) then it has to charge for that premium and compete on it's strengths. I'm sure Sony - only the world leader in electronics systems for decades know what their doing, and as long as they keep bringing out quality games THIS generation, then I as a consumer will win. The only disadvantage of people not buying a PS3 now is that it will hurt franchises NEXT generation. But I don't care about then yet. I'm more concerned about the quality games being released on the PS3 now! And it's happening and I'm satisfied!

I learned an important lesson today:

even though my first post is very pro-ps3, most fanboys just hit disagree and don't read it for the sarcastical comedy that it is. right now i've 9 disagrees and -1 bubble.

Lesson learned: Fanboys, no matter which side, talk more than they read. Maybe that's what makes them ignorant? From now on i will just stick to the script: "go rrod xbot!" or "wait beyond!!"

I intend to purchase the next generation of Xbox and Playstation consoles when (if?) they are under $400.

While I do think that the PS3 deserves to be in last place, most of what I post is just to get people like yourself worked up. It's just too tempting. lol

Just today I was at my local Best Buy looking for holiday gifts. And I saw 10 people buying a PS3, which for me is the first time I see many people in one place at the same time buying the PS3. (Except on the Launch). I really doubt that the PS3 is a "sinking ship".

No it doesn't need saving, why? because Sony is already giving out extra things that were once higher priced. 80 GB PS3 Even though it may have 2 USB ports now, is at 400.00 instead of what it once was. I bought my 40 GB for that same price, with the 80 GB your at least getting 40 More GB space. Not to mention quite a few places are bundling games and the Dual Shock 3 controller with it. So I'm pretty sure Sony is taking a bit of a hit to give this all out.

Kind of makes me a bit agitated since I only have the regular and a 40 Gb, when I could have waited and got the 80 Gb, Dual Shock 3 and a game, but meh whatever I have the system and I'm happy with it.

I guarantee if the PS3 launched a year early and was at 25 million "shipped" the media would be all over how close the 360 has come to the ps3 in two years with 17million *sold*.

Needs a pricecut, thats obvious. But What is the rush? If the 360 drops its price to a record low and only sells 100k more in its lifetime at the same time, where is the emergency? Perhaps if the 360 sold like the wii with 2million after a price drop, I would seriously hit the "OH MY GOD LETS DROP THE PRICE" but if you are competitive w/o a price cut, again. They will definitely drop the price. Everyone knows this. But there is no rush to cut profit just to sell a few more consoles when you can still have strong sells with the high price.

I think its safe to say that the WIi is an amazing exception to the console world. But Its not a race, which is what everyone is trying to make it out to be.

Neither console is in danger of becoming extinct like the dreamcast, and thats what everyone is so afraid of.

with KZ2. Later on with Heavy Rain. As long as Sony can get all their exclusives to match or even go beyond those games graphically... Sony won't have no problem mowing over competition with ease. BUT Sony needs to make sure the quality of thier games is maintained to at least rest at the same level of KZ2. KZ2 will set the bar that Sony can't allow all other exclusives to fall under it graphically as it will set a new standard of expectation out of the PS3. Although exciting times early next year for PS3, a lot of weight on the shoulders indeed!

Seriously, every big budget game that has been released for the PS3 has been called the PS3's saving grace, only to end up selling like ice cream cones in January.

Then that's awesome. The only time you really need a price cut is when hardware sales actually dip for a long period of time. That hasn't happened since early 2007 (which spurred the original price cut), so I doubt we'll see one until the PS3 Slim is released.

$400 is a lot, but if it continues to sell this well...

once again the only reason the PS3 has not had a price drop is because of the Bluray Market... if the PS3 drops say $50 then all bluray machines will have to lower there price.. I feel the Flaw of the PS3 is the BLuray... It made them slow out of the gate, made it very hard on Dev's to make games, yes it gives you more space on a disc but there are other means that wouldn't involve another market..
