New DualSense controllers have more powerful springs and new parts that might fix stick drift

Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue have all received a subtle upgrade

Didn't watch the video. This guy is a dweeb and I blocked all suggestions from him on YouTube. Seriously, one year and almost a half in, my controllers are just fine. The batteries always give out before anything on them. If you break something inside them just stop throwing them when you rage.

tbagmonster1177d ago

stop dude, they arent made out of titanium, just because you are fine doesnt mean others arent, ive had my triggers get stuck and the controllers are kept meticulously, the battery is god awful as well, the directional pad is squashy and moves awkwardly in its place., I love mine but thaty doesnt mean others dont have issues

LucasRuinedChildhood1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

What's also annoying is that the Japanese Dualsense is better but few people know about it.

Because I have tenosynovitis in my hands, I can't use sticks with ridges on the sides (it's really painful), so I had to try install convex sticks in a Dualsense.

When I did that (more than once), they'd always quickly get damaged - you can feel them start to "pop" as the sticks are moved from left to right.

I did some research and ordered a Dualsense from Japan. There's no issues. I can say with absolute certainty that the Japanese Dualsense is superior, and I reckon stick drift probably isn't an issue with them (or at least, not anywhere near the same extent).

I'd like if some journalist wrote a story about this to raise awareness, or DigitalFoundry looked into it. I feel like I'm one of the few people in the world who knows about this, and one region shouldn't be getting better controllers than others. I'm not sure if the change to the analog stick modules here is bringing parity.

LucasRuinedChildhood1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

For the people disliking my comment, explain why. Everyone knows I'm a PS guy - do you think I'm lying or something?

I've had issues playing games for a long time due to a misdiagnosis when I was younger. I'm stuck with tenosynovitis now, and I've even had corticosteroid injections for pain relief.

My customized PS5 controller is the first time since the PS3 era that I can play hours of games without having major issues. It's great.

This post is where I first discovered that the Japanese version is different: https://psradar.com/blogs/e...

I bought the Japanese Dualsense off Amazon Japan (pretty much cost the same) and unlike the Western version, there was no "popping" after installing the classic, convex PS sticks.

Also, if you want to simulate what the popping feels like, place your thumb on the ridge of the analog stick and move it. You'll immediately feel it. Imagine that during normal use with a condition that also makes it painful.

Phoenix761177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

I'm on my 3rd in a year already. My White R2 trigger goes off if my finger just brushes it and my Black left stick drifts. Brought purple only last week to play Horizon. I'm hoping these slight changes help out

gold_drake1177d ago

wuut lol
what are you doing with those controllers?
thats some bad luck right there

Ethereal1177d ago

I had the same thing happen to one of mine with the trigger tension all but disappearing and having it go off whenever I was resting near it. Sent it in under warrantee and got it replaced. Other than that, they have been fine.

Admiratio1177d ago

I have had to replace the spring on the R2 trigger on both of my white launch dualsense controllers. I haven't had an issue with the black or purple ones.

luidoom1177d ago

same here, man. I have a Day 1 PS5 that I barely use and the R2 activates just by literally touching it and the vibration sounds like a rattle. I’m 30 years old and never dropped it. No kids in the house.

EvertonFC1177d ago

Look after your stuff better

Eidolon1176d ago (Edited 1176d ago )

Mines been in use for 5-8hrs(conservative) a day for nearly 4 months and the controllers battery seems still good and no problems with the buttons/sticks. As for PS4 controllers, I've had 4 with left stick issues, maybe one with drift early on, others just made it very hard to move forward(would look like it's lagging, and couldn't sprint for shit), just wouldn't register full run unless you pushed the fuck outta it just to be sure, some games didn't care and were playable(but still noticeable).

Eventually you will get bit. I use to, and to some extent still feel like stick drift is blown out of proportion. I'd never had any major problem with any analog controller dating back to their first use in controllers. In the one or two PS4 controllers that showed minor drift I was able to click the stick in and rotate them around a few times both ways to remove the trivial drift from an idle controller. Because yes, the problem was only present when putting the controller down & so minimal it's not even worthy of a complaint as it never effected play.

However after finally getting around to using a second Dualsense I bought from Colorware I've been hit by drift plague. Even with a thumb on the right stick the camera pans rapidly at times. It was happening A LOT in Edge of Eternity and has killed me twice in Elden Ring.

This experience, this controller is why drift is a problem that does need to be addressed. Having said that it's the manufacturer of the analog stick that's the issue. Cheap parts, faulty design, whatever the case. So unless they made changes to their unit I highly doubt the new models will help alleviate drift. And after watching a few minutes of the video, yes, I highly doubt any changes were made to the analog.

As for stronger springs, etc. Sony has made adjustments to the controller in the past. I believe for PS4 there were at least 3 different models with some changes. One of which was a change to the trigger springs & a case change.

BlackDoomAx1177d ago

Yeah, listen to this guy. If his controller is fine, of course the millions of others should be. He is the universal human reference. Ask him anything.

S2Killinit1177d ago

Never had any issues with my dualsense. I have the white and purple (gorgeous)

1177d ago
EmperorDalek1177d ago

Stick drift has been a widely reported problem with the Dualsense, and there's videos explaining why this happens more than with previous PlayStation controllers. Not sure why you're complaining that they improved it, it's good news.

dumahim1177d ago

I've never had a problem with any of my controllers in all of my years of gaming, but my PS5 controller with the system started twitching all the time after just a few months.

Aussiesummer1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

Whatever gronk, the dude knows his shit.

Profchaos1177d ago

I'm on my third controller now first had sick drift and second the r2 trigger completely gave out.

Sony making these adjustments is a good thing

KyRo1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

Yes because no hardware fails just because yours didn't... /S

The springs in the triggers of the PS5 controller have been a talking point since launch but was overshadowed by the stick drift issue. Sony addressing the issue is a great news and if it was never a issue they would have never of changed them.

MeteorPanda1176d ago

all l do is play Monster hunter and FF14, not very rage inducing..the triggers always just go to shit. l've returned 3 under the same warranty.

Got the new version, the red one..it's a bit better but the white one is a hot piece of shit. drifts, sticky keys, the triggers lose resistance and become too sensitive. the Games store even mentioned there was a huge return rate on the controllers.

They poorly made the first batch of controllers, if yours is fine you havn't used them enough.

brewin1176d ago (Edited 1176d ago )

I've got really bad stick drift with the DS that came with my PS5. On both sticks too, it made HFW totally unplayable. I haven't used it that much either. Maybe 70-80 hours total. It's never been thrown or dropped. I have taken meticulous care of it. It started randomly since the release of Uncharted Collection, then just got worse. I bought the blue controller so hopefully that holds up.

nickanasty2061176d ago

This dude is actually really informative. I enjoy his content. I envy his soldering skills. You should check out his PS5 repair videos, hes pretty impressive and can fix just about anything.

myfathersbastard1177d ago

Did they put in a better battery? Because my 2 launch ones are both barely lasting 2 hours just using them to watch tv. If I’m playing ia game they are done in about 45 minutes. My 3rd controller I bought about six months ago already only last maybe 3 hrs of gaming. They lasted a solid 6-7 when new. That’s BAD battery degradation.

My series s controllers with aftermarket play n charge battery’s last 15-20 hours of freaking gameplay.
I bashed Microsoft for not including internal battery’s. But the $30 for the kit with 2 battery’s was well worth it considering I’ve spent over $180 on 2 extra controllers that don’t last half the length of one series controller.

yuukiliu1177d ago

my batteries last 10+ hours easily while gaming on both my launch controllers to this day. soooo, 45 minutes, there is no way that's true.

1177d ago
1nsomniac1177d ago

No they don’t. They’re not even rated to last anywhere near that. So that’s not true either.

myfathersbastard1176d ago

I swear it is. Perfect example. Took mine off the dock the other morning. Watched tv for 15 minutes while I had coffee before gym. Went to gym, came home, showered n got ready and what not. Turned on my PS5. Controller said 1 bar of battery. I DIDNT EVEN USE IT. My battery’s are f****d.
And 10 hours! I’m calling BS on THAT because mine have never lasted 10 hrs of gameplay.
I’m not lying. I love my PS5. But the battery’s in the controllers are straight garbage. I didn’t write one lie. If I’m gaming my one battery dies in less than an hour, my other night last 10-15 minutes over an hour, and my 3rd last about 3 hours.
If I didn’t have a dock (yes it’s official) and 3 controllers I’d need another one asap.

DazaMc1177d ago

I'd buy a nice long USB C cable. Both of my launch controllers are working perfectly.

UncertainCategory1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

It took awhile for me to figure this out, but the controllers don't charge that well when connected to a USB A port, find a usb-c to usb-c cable and you'll have improved performance with charging and battery life.

That said these controllers drain battery faster than any I have on the Nintendo or Xbox side.

myfathersbastard1176d ago

I have the official dock and they always say fully charged when they come off it.

andy851177d ago

Still not seeing this drift. One controller maybe 3000 hours used. Another around a tenth of that. It's not as if I don't live in a dusty environment either, my PS5 I've cleaned twice will attest to that. And it's still lasting 6-8 hours per charge and I have full rumble on. Obviously people have issues but it could be the old thing of you only hear about it when there's an issue so it seems more widespread than it is. Rarely people say something if it's working perfect.

Epicor1177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

I have around 1000 hours on my controller. No issues with battery but a noticeable drift on my left analogue stick. Analogue stick drift is a common issue with pretty much every single controller in the industry. PS4 controller never fully fixed that. I used 3 PS4 dualshock controllers and 3 third party controllers (2 razers and 1 scuf) during last console generation. And no, I don't throw my controllers around and I don't game THAT much (am almost 40 y old so don't have that much time). I play almost exclusively online shooters though so sticks wear down quite fast. I think the type of games one plays has a lot to do with controller issues.

andy851177d ago

I must be lucky because I never get drift on my controllers 😂 I don't eat or anything around them or throw then around. I do use compressed air. Dunno if that helps or not. And well I trophy hunt so it's a mixed bag. Mostly open world rpgs so they're getting a fair use

1177d ago
ChubbyBlade1177d ago

And my dual sense broke last night and my friends a few months ago. You’re just one of the lucky ones.

neutralgamer19921177d ago (Edited 1177d ago )

Isn't that the goal for any products that launch later to at least try to make them better/improve

Good-Smurf1177d ago

Controllers are the least of my worry since those are pretty well stocked.
I'm more worried about not be able to find PS5 at MSRP in 2022 in my country it's madness that these scalpers still get away with selling PS5 at $800-1000 for over a year and no one steps in to intervene.

Hehe that must be a hard pill to swallow.

neutralgamer199277d ago

I have been a PS fan since day one and last year switched to PC and to me Xbox series controller just feels better (no doubt features wise dual sense has more to offer but the feel in hand xbox feels more natural)

RupeeHoarder77d ago

The feel between the two is negligible at best. One thing I can absolutely say is not negligible is the sound difference. The Series controller is a loud, clicky, cheap sounding mess.

DodoDojo77d ago

I prefer the Xbox controller too. I think there was a Steam survey that showed 60% of the controllers used were Xbox controllers.

VenomUK77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

Just wait until Microsoft starts selling Xbox controllers for PS5. I joke, I joke, that’s one red line Microsoft will never cross…

Promise?

Will it?

MUMMY.

darthv7277d ago

DS has the better actuators but the XB feels better to hold. It is clicky... but that audible feedback is nice to hear. Then again i also like the classic clicky keyboards of yore.

Si-Fly77d ago

Hopefully Sony will get the ergonomics right one day, they’ve come a long way since the PS1 but Xbox has always had comfier controllers.

KyRo77d ago

I have both and it blows my head when people say the Xbox controller is better. The controller sounds cheap and hollow when moving the analogue sticks. The vibration feedback is pretty naff and the LB/RB buttons are like digital mouse buttons.

I've not used the Elite controller myself but the standard one just doesn't compare with the Duel Sense.

Rockstar77d ago

@ RupeeHoarder

I absolutely agree. The Xbox controller is indeed a loud, clicky cheap feeling controller. I prefer my dual sense and 8bitdo Ultimate controllers. But in my opinion all of these controllers are very comfortable

neutralgamer199277d ago

Guys I just shared my opinion on what felt better in my hands. Dual sense has more features like I said and I agree compared to Xbox controller DS feels premium. I wish Sony would give the option between having a normal dual sense and one layed out like Xbox controller and I wish Xbox would do the same. Having more options is better for us all

Controllers are such a subjective matter. What feels good in my hands might not in another gamers hands

MASTER_RAIDEN77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

I honestly can’t believe people still argue about this. The Xbox controller is significantly more ergonomic/comfortable than anything PlayStation has ever put out. Do you guys like those weirdly stiff, gross feeling dualsense triggers? How about that giant useless touchpad in between the and share buttons (2 of the worst buttons I’ve ever used on a controller). The triggers on the dualsense bottom out at an inward angle for crying out loud. The PS button feels weird and should probably just be a circle shape with the ps logo like it was on ps3. I love PlayStation and haven’t owned anything Xbox since the 360, but let’s just be honest. Xbox one controllers onward NAIL the controller feel. PlayStation controllers just have really awkward design decisions.

Goodguy0177d ago (Edited 77d ago )

Preference

babadivad77d ago

Exactly. Xbox has the better controller.

rocky04758677d ago

Really? I really think the people that say this MUST have small hands. There's NO way if you have big hands that you'd think the Xbox Series X controller feels natural in your hands. To me, it feels small and my hands feel like it's smothering the controller. It feels awkward to hold compared to the hefty PS5 Dual Sense controller. I'm not body shaming small hands either, sorry if it sounds like it.

neutralgamer199277d ago

Rocky I am 6-4 with quite large hands. I have a otter box cover OK my controllers. Yes without that she'll case I definitely think it's too small

phatak77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

well thats your personal opinion, im a full time pc gamer and the dualsense is easily the best controller ever made, the texture effect on the back and sides of the xbox controller this generation is extremely strong that it feels awful, I literally have to use a rubber cover or wear gloves to make that texture go away, it feels like saw dust. Playstation also has a texture but its much more normal feeling, the last time microsoft had a better controller than sony was the xbox 360, xbox one and ps4 dualshock were basically a tie, while dualsense smokes the series s/x controller for me personally

Profchaos77d ago

I've got to admit I never liked the Xbox one design the stick tension is wrong it's shoulder buttons don't feel right the grips are not as ergonomic and I don't like using it for long periods of time but the 360 pad was perfection I still use it over the Xbox one controller

TheEroica76d ago

The Sony defense force is gonna hate your comment. They're corporate bootlickers so expect downvotes.

PanicMechanic76d ago

The Xbox series controller is inferior to the Dualsense in just about every way possible. Dualsense feels better in my hands. Haptic feedback obviously makes the Dualsense the better controller and that can’t even be debated.

The series controller feels too “narrow” in my hands compared to the Dualsense

I prefer the Xbox controller. So do most PC players.

https://www.pcgamer.com/bes...

crazyCoconuts77d ago

On PC the biggest drawback of dualshock/dualsense is lack of universal support.
Once you've got DS4Windows / Steam Support configured, the Sony controllers simply have more features.
I can use the trackpad as a mouse which is really useful in Windows.
I can also use the gyro in Steam games for fine tuned aiming which is a great feature once you get used to it.
The other advanced features that the dualsense have are great (triggers, better haptics), but having to connect it via USB just to find most PC games don't support it isn't great at all.

Anyway this user mod doesn't support any of that greatness on xbox anyway... i was just talking about PC

Goodguy0177d ago

Budget 3rd party controllers have been amazing lately that even include back buttons, great battery life, trigger stops, and hall effects for $40-$60. 3rd party has been amazing and stepping it up, I'd recommend them if you're on PC. Official controllers by the big 3 and pro controllers are selling them overpriced and have some features fail within a year as a person who's tried out many controllers myself.

gold_drake77d ago

fuck no
i hate the xbox controllers. they are so bulky and loud for no good reason.

the biggest drawback of the somy controllers is the lack of 100% support.

Profchaos76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Plus the face buttons feel like you need to press then harder which doesn't lend itself well to twitch motions it's my most hated gamepad for retro gaming on PC or though emulation

It feels like it's built around shooters and nothing else

andy8576d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Only because of the ease of use connecting a Microsoft product to a PC. It's just plug and play unlike the dualsense. I personally use an Xbox controller too on my laptop, but if it was as flawless I'd be using a dualsense every time.

Rockstar76d ago

Price is likely a factor as well. The Xbox controller is 35 dollars less expensive than the dual sense. At least here in Canada anyway

I always forget how archaic the Xbox controller is, it'll be be like a wizard from the future casting a spell on the confused peasants.

"What is this magic you bring us?"

MrDead76d ago

No s#it.

"If you use the adjective archaic you are referring to something outmoded, belonging to an earlier period. Rotary phones and cassette players already seem so archaic! The adjective archaic means something that belongs to an earlier or antiquated time."

oldenjon76d ago

Well, it reads like you don't understand what it means. Just trying to help lol

Schoolboi76d ago

Well then you need to take some comprehension lessons, because what he said and how he used archaic is absolutely fine

oldenjon76d ago

@schoolboi oh thx ‘school’ boi! Yeah the point of the joke is somewhat obscure, and the language used isn’t really helping me grok it.

KwietStorm_BLM77d ago

I don't like the multiverse. It's scary.

DivineHand12577d ago (Edited 77d ago )

This is a huge win. I will try this as soon as I get home before Microsoft pulls the app. The only thing that is left is for someone to mod the dual sense controller buttons with Xbox buttons.

DivineHand12576d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Ok, to add an update. The app works, but you will need a PC or Android phone to act as a middleman to manage the connection between the console and the dual-sense controller. I was able to connect my dual sense using Bluetooth to my laptop, and then my laptop was able to connect to the Xbox via wifi.

I was able to control the Xbox dash board using the controller, and I tried playing 2 games. I tried the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations (disk version), but that didn't work. I then tried playing Forza Horizon 4 (Digital), and I was able to control the game without any noticeable input lag. I expected the game to have rumble like PS4 games on the PS5, however, there was no vibration what so ever. I was only able to experience the novelty of using a dual sense controller to control the Xbox Series X. In its current state, you are better off just using the Xbox controller.

The flaw I noticed is that if you have Steam running on your PC and you press the Playstation button thinking it will take you back to the dashboard, you are wrong. It will just launch Steam big picture mode on the PC, and at that point you have to focus on what is on your PC because you don't want to press and open something accidentally. It seems you will still need an Xbox controller to get back to the dashboard/home screen. It doesn't matter if you exit Steam on your PC.

PlayStation and Retailers Have Increased the PS5 DualSense Controller by $5

Sony has seemingly implemented a PS5 DualSense controller price increase without announcing it, and it's implemented by retailers too.

Chocoburger263d ago (Edited 263d ago )

As if they weren't already overpriced enough as it is. And all 3 first party companies refuse to use hall effect analog sticks on purpose, just to sell more us controllers.

Sega used hall effect analog sticks for both Saturn and Dreamcast.

excaliburps263d ago

What do you mean? Third-party controllers do use Hall effect to prevent stick drift.

Chocoburger263d ago

Indeed, I have even recently bought hall effect third party controllers on pre-order last month, but I made no mention of third parties in my previous post. I specifically mentioned first party, which are usually the best build quality (outside of the potentiometer analog sticks).

just_looken262d ago

Get ready for those to be blocked via a update sony and xbox has blocked alot of 3rd party stuff on there consoles even fight stick's no doubt 3rd party pads will also be blocked soon.

Good-Smurf263d ago

Now you know how Nintendo's making a killing with their stick drift prone Joy Cons.
I missed the days they used to make indestructible controller immune to analog stick drift came with the system.
Some of my DualShock 2 controllers still going strong with no stick drift after what seemed like 20 years despite its rubber are all melted away long before and yes, the pressure sensitive buttons still work perfectly as well.

Chocoburger263d ago

Yep, even my 1996 Nintendo 64 controller still works fine its a bit loose, but the sensitivity is still present, and there is no drifting. First party companies are intentionally taking the piss with us, and its not right. The DualSense Edge allows you to replace the analog sticks, but that's a feature which should be present on all standard controllers from Sony / Nin / MS, without having to pay $200 for the privilege just to pay them more for replacement sticks.

My DualShocks 1, 2, 3, don't really suffer from any drifting, but I bought some used PS3 consoles off ebay, and the controllers arrived damaged with sticks that have some drifting to them, but that's because they were abused.

neutralgamer1992263d ago

I really am surprised how there hasn’t been an class action lawsuit for that against these companies

porkChop262d ago

First party controller prices are insane. 3rd parties like 8BitDo are putting out controllers with just as high quality, with hall effect sticks and triggers, for considerably less money. It's become such a ripoff.

It's actually gone higher in other regions Australia just saw it go from $110 RRP to $125 not that it doesn't frequently go on sale for $80 odd

darthv72263d ago

Hmm.... when the Concord controller went on sale, it was $84.99 while the Astro bot one was $79.99. And Astro released after Concord yet they are just now increasing the price by $5.

jznrpg263d ago

I have 1 Astro Bot, 3 launch and 1 Edge plus I’ll get another with the Pro. I don’t need anymore controllers. I’ll probably keep the Astro Bot in the box. I have had no issues with any of them even the 2 my young children use. I do make them wash their hands before using them and tell them not ever to set the controllers on the stick side so that helps I’d guess.

I’m sure parts cost more for them so it gets passed to the consumer.

darthv72263d ago

you didnt pick up the concord one? That goes for big $$ now, like the hogwarts edition. The other special editions seem to be more reasonable but those two are stupid pricey now.

And even more so are the people expecting Pro's price to be less than 600$.
