Game Review: Horizon Forbidden West | PushStartPlay

PushStartPlay writes:

Horizon Forbidden West is an absolute triumph. And to think, Guerrilla Games developed both the PS4 and PS5 alongside each other. Yet, it seems like no sacrifices have been made at the expense of the other. I said earlier that this sequel is bigger and better, and that couldn’t be any closer to the truth. Horizon Forbidden West takes up so much of my time because I simply cannot get enough of it. It’s one of those games that I can’t stop thinking about when I’m away from it. Speaking of which, I’ve got to go. After all, I’ve got a post-apocalyptic world to save. Horizon Forbidden West is the first must-have PlayStation exclusive this year.

This is the first time I've seen anyone else say they chose quality mode over performance. I almost always go with performance as I love the smooth gameplay, but for some reason quality mode is so damn good in this game. I don't know if it's how well they lock in the 30 fps or just the smoothness of animations, but it feels incredible. Also the visuals here get a much more noticeable resolution bump than I've seen in other games. I would suggest giving it a go to those who just jumped right into performance mode without checking.

FlavorLav011172d ago

Agreed. I went back and forth between modes through the whole game. Just couldn’t believe how good it looked in resolution mode. I even got stuck in photo mode for a bit, and I never really mess with that feature. Haha

Lighter91172d ago

I forgot about this. I was just happy that my ps4 save worked on my ps5.

MeatyUrologist1172d ago

Haha yeah, as someone who loves photography I'm embarrassed to admit how long I spend in photo mode here...

IanTH1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

It sounds weird to me to hear you think quality mode feels good - not because I think you're wrong, but because my experience with it is very different. I tried using quality mode after using performance mode for a while and I just couldn't do it. It felt so visually jarring.

HOWEVER, I think it may be down to the fact I'm using an OLED. My understanding is that is one of the downsides to the very fast pixel response time. There's no "ghosting" (pixel smear, essentially) on OLED like there are on most LCD screens. Generally a good thing, but in lower framerate games it can become a negative. It honestly looked almost like there was a missing frame between each frame or something in 30fps mode. I even noticed this when I went to go back & play The Order 1886. I will say, it looks a bit nicer when standing still in HFW, but once I moved at all I had to swap back.

But I'm still with you 100% in that people should check out both modes before playing. I always like poking at settings before I get going. Never know what you might miss out on tucked away behind developer defaults!

MeatyUrologist1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

Yeah it definitely may have something to do with the TV. I typically can barely tell the difference resolution wise between modes in ps5 games, so it's an easy choice for me to go performance. Here for some reason the bump in res seems huge while still feeling smooth as butter. My TV is a Samsung tu7000, which isn't known for being a top tier gaming TV or anything, but FW just runs really well imo.

Vengeance11381172d ago

Even Digital Foundry highly recommended Quality mode over performance as visuals would take a big hit in performance mode.

VersusDMC1172d ago

100 hours and a platinum later i wish i would have know that...i avoided all videos to avoid spoilers! Watch one horizon video and you get you tube video recommendations with spoilers as a thumbnail...

But oh well. It looked amazing regardless!

Viljong1171d ago

Its not big hit at all. Barely noticeable who would play 30fps for that. DF are jerks nowdays not stating obvious facts but dingle with bs.

randomvoice1171d ago

I have switched between both often and saying it is a 'big hit' is a stretch. The only issue in performance mode is the over-sharpening and shimmering due to upscaling which the devs have acknowledged and we might get a fix in the future. The latest patches have also fixed a lot of the pop in issues which were prevalent. Overall, you can't go wrong with either.

Teflon021172d ago

This and Ratchet I think is using a really good motion blur maybe. Both are the only 2 games on ps5 where I picked quality over framerate. Though I did for Tales of Arise for a bit but the jumpy framerate made me go to 60fps

Viljong1171d ago

It is little sharper and the picrure doesnt shimmer like performance mode but it sure is 30fps motionblur diashow. 30fps loose all the detail in motion and the camera movrment is bad. Not playable for me. Also audio mix is sometimes bugged giving that hollow echo 3d audio effect even with HT surround or tv speakers.

This game would have been better if it wasnt cross gen. Just look at ratchet and spiderman games running 60fps with brilliant RT.

randomvoice1171d ago

I'm playing in quality mode since I wanted to see how great the game actually looks and it looks pretty amazing seriously. There are legit a few places that remind me of Avatar! Not gonna spoil but some places had my jaw drop. I am keeping the performance mode for a New Game plus with a higher difficulty in the future. This way I get best of both the world.

Honestly after the first 30 min, I got over the 30 FPS downgrade. I don't even notice it anymore. Of course 60 is great and I look forward to playing it that way as well, but the game has a very stable 30 FPS so it doesn't feel as bad.

MeatyUrologist1171d ago

My thoughts exactly. Playing on normal difficulty, the 30 fps is fine, but on my next, harder playthrough I will def go with performance

Gamingisfornerds1171d ago (Edited 1171d ago )

It really depends on the game, I noticed. Dying Light 2 supposedly is locked 30 fps, but it feels absolutely horrible. I had to go with performance mode, because 30 fps in that game was literally giving me headache.

Horizon Forbidden West on the other hand feels perfectly fine at 30 fps.

im about 15 hours into the game and i havent even gotten past Barren Light yet. Been exploring, doing side quests, and hunting.

repsahj1171d ago

...I'm on my 33hrs already but I only have the 1 subordinate function of Gaia which is Aether. The map is so huge and beautiful that's why I always explore first before goin to the main mission.

I Watched the Leaked Horizon AI Tech Demo Through My Fingers

Maybe I'm turning into "old man yells at cloud."

So lame, a tech demo was conducted to test new technology. This is nothing new; they've been doing this since the 1980s. There have been thousands of tech demos that led to nothing. That said, AI is here to stay, and it will eventually find its way into games in one form or another. It's time to stop the overly dramatic reactions and accept reality.

Christopher57d ago

Talk about a 180 midway through your argument. Perhaps that 180 is why people are talking about it?

darthv7257d ago

What he said was not wrong though... AI is here and being used more and more is different industries. Its not like it is going away anytime soon.

Christopher56d ago

@darth: Where did I say he was wrong other than expressing that it's this thinking that people are talking about it? He complained about people talking about a tech demo being shown to the public as an expression of AI's use being popularized and then proved it with his own words. I didn't say they were wrong, only it only gives credence to those who are worried about the popularization and use of AI in the industry to replace actual actors.

Rancegamerx56d ago

I can see what you mean. What I am getting at is just because they did a tech demo with Aloy using AI to voice doesn't meam that this particular tech will ever actually be used. Although I personally think it will, if we can get voices to sound more natural and real. Unless it's stopped by voice actors.

darthv7256d ago

that is the current situation. voice actors are 'voicing' their concern over the use of AI. im sure you have heard those TV commercials where you can tell its an AI voice. But as things improve... there will be a point where nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Mr_cheese57d ago

Thegamer are quickly highlighting themselves as a website full of over the top BS

gold_drake57d ago

there is this website from a bunch of devs who developed a more enhanced AI conversational voice thing, where u can talk to them.

i did for 10 minutes and it freaked me out how real it sounded. it did glitch a few times but damn. the, in real time, chatter and response was amazing and frightening at the same time ha

Kyizen56d ago

One of the original Toy Story developers summed it up nicely. Basically when they were doing Toy Story people were shocked you are going from hand drawn art to computers but now no one blinks an eye and most if not all anime is 'drawn' on computers. But he also stated this didn't replace artist but just gave them a new tool to use. Now with AI the author is saying it will replace writing but it won't, using it to have dynamic conversations with NPCs or chatter as the character explores the world will avoid that repetitive banter. You will still need writers to craft a good story and make a compelling character(s).

Horizon Forbidden West Struck the Perfect Balance of Tribes for Horizon 3

Horizon Forbidden West may have struck the right balance after adding several new tribes to the series, something which Horizon 3 should try to keep.

No horizon 3 i beg you Sony .. enough of this series already

pwnmaster300077d ago

It literally only had 2 main games and 2 dlc.
Sure it had some spin off but others have more
Halo
Gears
Elder scroll
Uncharted
God of war
Gta
Etc.
Game isnt done yet and just because your tired of it doesn’t mean everyone is.

ravens5277d ago

Exactly. (*All following #s are slightly exaggerated*) There's like 36 CODs. 16 Assassin's Creed. 25 Final Fantasies. 80 Maddens. I hate when we're on the 3rd iteration of a game and people say this.

isarai76d ago

We've had 2 main games, 2dlcs, a vr spinoff, a lego spinoff and soon to be GAAS spinoff

lukasmain77d ago

Why not? It's popular. They're great critically acclaimed games. It need a 3rd game.

northpaws77d ago

@Cacabunga

Only speak for yourself, I want to know how the story ends.

raWfodog76d ago

Same here. I'm enjoying the story. I want to see what happens when Nemesis arrives.

JEECE77d ago

It all depends on if it's actually a massive step forward or if it just feels like an iterative sequel. There's a lot of revisionist history now about how "mid" Horizon has always been, but people weren't saying that when Zero Dawn came out-people were pretty much universally into it. The major hit against it at the time was that it came out too close to Breath of the Wild.

The problem with Forbidden West is that it took five years and it was just an iterative sequel. Iterative sequels can be fine, or even great, but when five years pass and a new generation of consoles comes out, people expect a big jump, and they didn't get it. Stuff that worked in 2017 felt tired by 2022.

3 can't just be Forbidden West with slightly better graphics. It needs to actually be a meaningful leap.

ravens5277d ago

Im looking forward to the 3rd game. I'd like that to be the last one though. New IP after would be ideal.

jznrpg77d ago

Took me a little while to get into Forbidden West because I was playing on hard but it was really damn good once I got into a groove.

I want to see the ending of this trilogy so hopefully it’s not too far out. Hopefully whoever plays Sylens can do the character justice.

isarai76d ago

I dunno, i LOOOOVED Zero Dawn, but i wanted Forbidden West to be over by like the halfway point. It's an absolutely gorgeous game but damn was it buggy for a while after release, and the enemies and combat felt so janky and unbalanced compared to the first.
