Housemarque looks back on Returnal’s success

From VentureBeat: "Last week I joined a group of journalists in the offstage winners’ room for the DICE Awards celebrating the best of video games in 2021 at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas. Each group of winners filed through our room and we collectively tossed a bunch of questions at the winners.

Housemarque’s Returnal won for outstanding achievements in original music composition and audio design. We met with Gregory Louden, narrative director for Returnal; Harry Krueger, game director of Returnal; and Ilari Kuittinen, managing director at Housemarque."

Fantastic game marred only by misinformation spread across the internet as if fact by journos who had never played the game. But that can be said about most things these days.

Worth every penny.

Storm23785d ago

Definitely. Love this game so much. One of the best, if not the best, experiences I’ve had on PS5 so far.

Crows90785d ago (Edited 785d ago )

Waiting for a price drop to repurchase as digital.

I purchase physical first...then I trade it back in to get some money back for other games.

If i really enjoyed a game i then purchase it digitally. But I only do that with games I really enjoy and would replay....like chivalry 2 and this game. Dead cells as well. And a few others.

Returnal did poorly for the same reason H:ZD has been outsold by Elden Ring, the £70 price tag.

Jkappin784d ago

Or could it be that both of those are exclusives compared to Elden ring which is a available on almost everything?

Silly gameAr784d ago

Wasn't Elden Ring 70 also? Your coment makes no sense, unless you're just trying to get a rise out of people by making a stupid comment.

mmj784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Fair point when comparing H:FW sales to ER but people are far less likely to take a risk on a new type of game when it costs so much. H:FW is a known quantity, I'm sure GT7 will also sell well at £70 because people know what they're getting, just don't expect people to gamble away £70 on games like Returnal when they aren't sure they'll even like it.

mmj784d ago

Elden Ring only cost £45. I'd hazard a guess that if it had launched at £70 it wouldn't have done half as good as it has. Of course it's loyal fan base would have bought it but you'd have far less people taking a chance on it.

It's close between ratchet and returnal for me.
Can't edit my above comment but I'm not saying I shit on it going off my disagrees.

MIDGETonSTILTS17784d ago

R&C was too easy for me. It was very enjoyable, just not challenging, and I play for the challenge (I can’t play Horizon games on anything but Very Hard, because it’s silly when a robo trex needs more than two hits to kill you.).

DaleCooper784d ago

It was my GOTY as well. The environments, gameplay, and cryptic story worked so well together and made the experience fantastic.

FlavorLav01785d ago (Edited 785d ago )

Didn’t get the platinum…yet. But I did see the true ending. Super proud I beat that game at all with 2 kids under 3 and free time getting more scarce. Fantastic game and story unfolding.

RpgSama785d ago

I have one that is going to turn 2 next month and another one coming in June, I applaud you.

Storm23785d ago

I got the platinum. Not an easy task with the random levels being generated. There are some pretty good sites out there that can narrow down what to look for on your run to see if it will be there or to start over. Felt so great when I finally got it.

FlavorLav01785d ago (Edited 785d ago )

That’s an epic trophy to have. Period. Congrats Storm and Elda, y’all officially got some killer thumbs.

Storm23785d ago

Haha. Thanks. Can’t wait to go back to this game during a slow period and replay it on a new account so it is fresh from square 1. Also, some DLC would be great. Can’t wait to see what Housemarque comes up with next

Elda785d ago

I put over 100 hrs in Returnal & got the Platinum trophy. Such a good game hopefully Hosemarque is doing some dlc.

Knushwood Butt785d ago

I put 105 hours in and only have about 30% trophies!

Crows90785d ago

At the time I played this and beat it to the true ending I had 3 kids under 3. Now they're 3, 2, 1 and another on the way.

Storm23785d ago

You are a busy man. I don’t want kids so that sounds awful but wish you the best lol. Happy gaming

Crows90784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

@Storm23

You don't want kids...I get that. Neither do I. I'd rather live comfortably with no one to bother me, etc.
But it is in no way awful. Many misconceptions around having kids. I would be far worse off if I didn't have kids.

Let me put it this way. The more kids you have the more you're forced to give and the more you have to grow as an individual. Not saying you should have kids. I sure as hell didn't expect this at all. I'm not exactly father material. I do t view myself like that anyways. And that's not the reason to have kids. I just don't want to choose which one gets to be born.

Having kids is like waking up in returnal and every new kid is a completely different challenge. Lol

I am limited to playing when theyre asleep so that's the only downside. I'm with you man. No idea wtf I'm gonna do with the 4th one.

Storm23784d ago

I like the Returnal explanation on dealing with the different kids. I totally understand that. I was a high school teacher and coach so I know how I had to wear different hats for different kids for them to hear me and be successful.

Good luck man.

Game is great! I've beaten it 3 times since i platinumed it. It's a great podcast game.

The room randomizer really makes it replayable. That and being so smooth to play.

As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN1d 2h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos1d ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

GamerRN17h ago

They can form a company if they want, they are just as jobless as if "Microsoft had left them as 3rd party".

peppeaccardo18h ago

"MIcrosoft leaves Bethesda do what they know how to do best" ... close! Oh the irony ....
(Citation from a week old article)

ChasterMies14h ago

I think Microsoft and other game publishers are letting people go because they think ai will replace them. Doesn’t matter how much profit they make. They were always going to be let go.

PassNextquestion1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger1d 2h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Mr Logic12h ago

What a stupid thing to say. The elites give 0 fucks what we say on an obscure website in the comments section.

Crows9012h ago

You can always reach out and give them jobs at your company man. Don't wait

Profchaos1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto1d 4h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos1d 4h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long1d 1h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel1d 3h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator1d 2h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

H91d 22h ago

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

VincentVanBro5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

What a word vomit, rambling, turd of an article that simply states the obvious. Classic exputer.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg1d 6h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos1d 5h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola1d ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me
