Elden Ring: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S Tech Review - The Best Ways to Play on Next-Gen Consoles

DigitalFoundry: "Everything you need to know about getting the best performance out of Elden Ring. Updated to patch 1.02 we'd hoped to see a boost to frame-rates over the network test - though in reality it remains a sub-60fps experience on PS5, Series X and S, regardless of mode."

The best ways to play (for performance mode) are apparently:
- PS4 version on a PS5
- XSX with a VRR capable display

I've said it before and I'll say it again - we need that VRR update on PS5 ASAP.

It should've been second in line after the expandable storage support. I shouldn't have to play a last-gen version on my $500 next-gen console just to avoid frame stutters.

alb18991150d ago

PS5 needs VRR and 1440p monitor support

Storm231150d ago

2021 Sony TV’s just got the VRR update…so hoping PS5 VRR update will soon follow. But the fact it isn’t in the newest beta is not encouraging…

Eidolon1149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

XB1X supports it. Sony is skimping. >:(. I can definitely see the stutters on Elden Ring PS5 with LG OLED C7 55" . But that's to say I don't have VRR, I need a reason to upgrade.

GamingSinceForever1150d ago

No they need to optimize the game. If HFW can run a smooth 60fps with those graphics this game shouldn’t have any issues.

alb18991150d ago

So, the PS5 doesn't need VRR?
Wouldn't it run better right now?

Army_of_Darkness1149d ago

I agree, consoles shouldn't need to rely on an expensive new 4ktv in order for a game to run "smooth" that will make everyone's experience vary from great to worse...

LucasRuinedChildhood1149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

You shouldn't have to buy an expensive TV on top of the €500 you paid for your console just to avoid frame stutters either. What percentage of Series X|S players do you really think have VRR-enabled TVs? Adoption of VRR TVs is still quite low, and they are typically on the higher end (expensive).

VRR is not a factor for the vast majority of people, so the options you get on PS5 are better (a superior native version, or a locked 60fps on the PS4 Pro version) although they're still not acceptable.

Neither console should actually have these issues, nor the PC version. The PS4 Pro version shows that 60fps on PS5 shows that 60fps on both next gen consoles is easily achievable. The load times on PS5 shouldn't be 3 times faster either, btw. Not touching this game until FromSoft fixes it.

LucasRuinedChildhood1149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

*the PS4 Pro version running on PS5 shows that 60fps on both next gen consoles is easily achievable (with the right targets).

Generally poor optimization aside, it shows that FromSoft actively made the decision to target resolutions that will cause huge framerate drops, and they prefer it this way. Their priorities are ... strange.

porkChop1149d ago

I do agree with you. These issues shouldn't be happening with these new systems. I don't think VRR should be used as a crutch, but I do like when the option is there for cases like this.

OB1Biker1149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

‘You shouldn't have to buy an expensive TV on top of the €500 you paid for your console just to avoid frame stutters either. ‘

This 1000%
DF need stop pushing accessory high tech spending and focus on the consoles themselves.
Next they will say if you buy an expensive controller it avoids latency on a console which makes it ‘the best’.

ScootaKuH1149d ago

But in this case the game is poorly optimised. Sure VRR would be good but not everyone can take advantage of that because not everyone has a compatible TV. That's not to excuse the lack of VRR on PS5 but the lack of it also can't be used as an excuse for poor optimisation.

TL24SS1149d ago

Facts, when the hell is Sony going to release the VRR update as promised last year? SMH

Wow XSX with VRR is the best place to play overall even though the PS5 has a slight FPS advantage.

VRR is a real game changer LG C1 is the best investment for this gen.

thesoftware7301150d ago

Indeed! I got it on sale from Amazon before Xmas.

Amazing set for real!

S2Killinit1150d ago

The real game changer is the dualsense. Does this game support dualsense? Because if it does, then the slight graphical or frame difference is not really a “game changer” in any way shape or form.

victorMaje1149d ago

Basic dualsense support. It’s not like demon’s souls remake.
Personally I think there are many places where it would’ve made so much (dual :) )sense to have it only to find it’s not there.
Although it feels like a missed opportunity it’s still a great game.

porkChop1149d ago

From what I've read the game doesn't support adaptive triggers, and the haptic feedback/vibration is hardly used at all. So in the case of Elden Ring the DualSense isn't really doing anything.

ScootaKuH1149d ago

Dualsense support in Elden Ring is barebones to say the least. No trigger support and aside from weak vibration, the haptic support is non existent which is a real shame. I know it was by a different developer but Demon's Souls remake makes far better use of DualSense

Babadook71149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

PS5 with the win at 60fps, good response time and great load times. SX gets the consolation prize because if you shell out for a brand new TV the variable frame rate is tolerable at 1800p. Not great though with FPS in the 30s interfering with VRR.

SeTTriP1149d ago

I have a lg c1 and it shouldn't be need to play the game and I'm not buying it.

Side note, I remember when DF preached fps over resolution.now that the xbox is lacking it the other way around lmfao.

Eidolon1149d ago (Edited 1149d ago )

Definitely thinking upgrading from my LG OLED C7, only have a PS5 right now(VRR not an option), but definitely will get an XBSX at some point, but just bought a 3060ti recently....
My OLED still has a good life ahead, I just don't think normies can take care of an OLED, so I feel bad just handing it over to family without checking up on it XD. 4 years is long enough for an upgrade, it's just that TV's don't retain value like consoles and are not as easy to trade.

Lexreborn21149d ago

I’ll never buy another LG tv. I bought 4 of them over the last 6 years and if it isn’t the same problems such as the remote receiver busting, it’s their app support being discontinued. And the last one 2 I had developed a awkward blue tint that looked horrible.

Not a product I trust anymore

Plays great on PS5 for a souls game . I mostly play on quality mode and it’s good . I don’t need extra frames as the game isn’t nearly as hard as Sekiro and It feels fine . I’m not dying because of it so I go with quality .

Muigi1150d ago

I dont get why developers don’t just go with 1440p in their performance modes, it scales better with a 4k screen anyway.

Using Elena to play Crash on Uncharted 4 was pretty great.

Saving some trapped aliens in Super Metroid and seeing them escape. Daisy's third eye in Melee. Seeing Mario characters portraits in a window at Hyrule castle. Megaman X using Ryu/Ken's movesets in mutiple entries. Bayonetta cosplaying as Fox McCloud while using an Arwing to kill angels and demons. So many good ones throughout the years.

2020s - The Decade of Bloated Masterpieces

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Halfway into the decade and the 2020s has been an interesting one for gaming in both good ways and bad, with the restructuring of the industry, a mix of innovation and the same old, and of course many, many long waits. But there have also been many quality titles, to be sure; the last three years in particular have seen a number of critical darlings. Something the most acclaimed ones have had in common (with the obvious exception of Astro Bot) has been an absolutely massive scope, easily boasting 100+ hours of content.

In my own experience that massive amount of content hasn’t always been a positive; in fact I would go so far as to call their slightly overeager strive for quantity a shared flaw of these games. I’ll be looking at four titles in particular here and going over the different ways in which these otherwise solid experiences became victims of having just a bit too much fluff."

To much unimportant content and bloat is mote likely to cause me to stop playing or never revisit it. Especially when it feels like you're forcing the player to do side quests to pad out your game length just to make it long enough so you won't have the player trade the game in to fast

One recent example for me is Hogwarts I enjoyed the story but despised the level gating there was no real reason to lock missions behind a leveling system it was just forcing the player to fly around doing side quests and puzzles so they could advance to the next chapter

gold_drake37d ago

omg hogwarts

i love every second of it but damn, does it feel like a chore to play haha.

scorpio_204937d ago

Hogwarts Legacy should have stuck to what other games couldn’t do: Let us be a Hogwarts student. The open world aspect was just like any Ubisoft game.

attilayavuzer37d ago

Honestly wish it had more of a Bully feel. It was clear that 90% of the attention went to the school and town and the rest felt like the northern chunk of Just Cause 3's map. Almost like they had to justify the flying mechanic by spreading things out.

Profchaos37d ago

Yeah agree the Hogwarts castle and grounds is ripe for exploration. Look at the PS1 Argonaut game i felt like that old game did a better job with relaying what it's like to be a student at Hogwarts than what legacy did.

Legacy was like ok you've done a few classes learnt to ride a broom go spend the next multitude of hours exploring nearby towns and killing hundreds of goblins and spiders I don't think they did enough with the school grounds.

I appreciate them including Hogsmeade but I felt like it didn't need to expand past that point

SimpleDad37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Why don't we have more 12-15h single player stories for $45 is beyond me.

Profchaos37d ago

My guess is I recall around the late 2000s game trades were a big issue which resulted in publishers shifting away from standard single player campaigns that could be beaten in a month and we started to see more expansive open worlds that would take longer to see everything to keep the player invested long enough that they wouldn't trade in the game when it was going to be the most profitable retail window e.g the first month

With the rise of all digital games I can see those games making a comeback as there is no second hand market

I_am_Batman37d ago

Expecting a 12-15h game to be $45 is part of the problem. These games don't sell well at full price anymore and relatively speaking it takes a lot fewer resources to stretch it into a 30-40 hour game that can be sold for full price.

We can complain about padding all we want, but most people simply pay more for padded games.

thorstein37d ago

Eternal Strands $48. 18 hours

Citizen Sleeper 2 $23 10 hours.

AstroBot (got as a gift) 16 hours and they keep adding levels.

CantThinkOfAUsername37d ago

Totally agree. I'm tired of the same bloated fluff that games present as 'content.'

anast37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

BG Act III is dense. It's the opposite of bloat.

andy8537d ago

Act 3 is massive. I think I finished the game 4 times for the platinum and I know I must have missed at least half the stuff in that city

anast37d ago

There is some much unique content in that ACT.

gold_drake37d ago

i feel like Rebirth only really had Costa del sol as a bloat. but its a long game, so i dont blame the author
