How Big Is The Map In Horizon Forbidden West?

You're probably wondering how big the sandbox is in Horizon Forbidden West. So, how big is the map in Horizon Forbidden West?

I used to enjoy really big maps until I started playing AC Odyssey and now I prefer smaller maps..

SyntheticForm1165d ago

Depends on what the maps are filled with; big maps can be great.

Odyssey's map lacked content variation within.

Lionsguard1165d ago

I suppose that is true. Everywhere I went was just...the Mediterranean. It looked nice but it was all the same, no variation in weather or biomes.

RpgSama1165d ago

I felt the exact same way, at one point I just stopped playing all together seeing how I got sent halfway across to map to a new location to get there by boat, that was the end of it for me, it stopped being fun and it was just overwhelmingly big for no reason.

porkChop1164d ago

Yup. Smaller maps more densely populated with stuff. It works really well in Yakuza. The Deus Ex games were technically hub worlds, but each hub was also packed with stuff to do.

neutralgamer19921164d ago (Edited 1164d ago )

Don't play Ubisoft open world games they will make it hard for you to enjoy other great games. Ubisoft games feel so empty with actual interesting/fun quests yet their game maps are filled with icons

ifinitygamer1164d ago (Edited 1164d ago )

"Everywhere I went was just...the Mediterranean. It looked nice but it was all the same, no variation in weather or biomes."
@Lionsguard What did you want them to do? They were replicating a real place, not a fictional land. They couldn't exactly toss in a jungle.

Lionsguard1164d ago

You're right, I apologize. I still enjoyed riding across all of Greece on my flaming horse and riding into Elysium to help a bunch of gods. Honestly though, AC needs to just straight up ditch real life settings. Throughout playing Odyssey, the fantastical stuff was the best. I just kept wishing the game I was playing was not called Assassins' Creed. The fantasy fights were the best and even though all the modern day/future stuff was greatly reduced since the last time I played, it was still the most boring parts of the game. I couldn't give two craps about Layla or any of her annoying friends. AC would be far better served as a full fantasy game with different lands and biomes. Once you've seen one Zeus statue penis, you've seen them all. I'm not sure I even want to play Origins or Valhalla at this point knowing I'm just due for another hundred hours worth of nothing but sand and forests..

Rimeskeem1165d ago

I like these denser, more explorable maps that dont require multiple hours to go through.

AzubuFrost1164d ago

It's a shame that open world has become such a big trend nowadays. If devs want to create a big world, do it where it feels just about right. Don't make it so excessive where people just feel so overwhelmed and quit because of it. That's why I feel Skyrim nails it really well. I've heard Bethesda's next game Starfield will feature planets (yes more than one) will be the size of Skyrim if not bigger, so that'll be a concerning issue for me.

But returning back to Horizon Forbidden West, congratulations on another homerun Guerilla. Grab some beers and celebrate at the pub. Y'all deserve it.

phoenixwing1165d ago

just bought the game digitally on psn, can't wait to play in 36 hours. for those wondering why 36 it's because my internet is just that slow :I

bloop1164d ago

My wife wants me to move out of town to the countryside, and this is the one reason I'm not willing to move. I think I'd go insane without high speed broadband. I downloaded it in about 20 minutes and have put a few hours in. It's absolutely stunning and it'll be worth the wait 👍🏻

phoenixwing1164d ago

It is definitely a downside but our neighbors are so far away we never interact. Which is a good thing nowadays imo lol

bloop1164d ago (Edited 1164d ago )

Yes, I can definitely relate to that!! Nothing worse for an introvert like myself having to make meaningless small talk with people I don't know or necessarily care for!! Seriously considering getting t shirts printed up saying "I don't like people." Maybe when 5g becomes the norm and readily available everywhere, I might consider the wife's suggestion. In the meantime, you only have 23 hours left to wait. Less than a day now 😃🙏

franwex1164d ago

Dang. Why not simply buy the disc version?

Unless you have a digital PS5?

phoenixwing1164d ago

I live in a place where the weather is bad right now

mkis0071164d ago

They did another good job keeping it small enough to not be excessive.

OMNlPOTENT1164d ago

I mean the first game’s map wasn’t huge, but it was beautiful and had a lot in it. I don’t think it needs to be needlessly big, but it does need a lot to find.

I Watched the Leaked Horizon AI Tech Demo Through My Fingers

Maybe I'm turning into "old man yells at cloud."

So lame, a tech demo was conducted to test new technology. This is nothing new; they've been doing this since the 1980s. There have been thousands of tech demos that led to nothing. That said, AI is here to stay, and it will eventually find its way into games in one form or another. It's time to stop the overly dramatic reactions and accept reality.

Christopher33d ago

Talk about a 180 midway through your argument. Perhaps that 180 is why people are talking about it?

darthv7233d ago

What he said was not wrong though... AI is here and being used more and more is different industries. Its not like it is going away anytime soon.

Christopher32d ago

@darth: Where did I say he was wrong other than expressing that it's this thinking that people are talking about it? He complained about people talking about a tech demo being shown to the public as an expression of AI's use being popularized and then proved it with his own words. I didn't say they were wrong, only it only gives credence to those who are worried about the popularization and use of AI in the industry to replace actual actors.

Rancegamerx32d ago

I can see what you mean. What I am getting at is just because they did a tech demo with Aloy using AI to voice doesn't meam that this particular tech will ever actually be used. Although I personally think it will, if we can get voices to sound more natural and real. Unless it's stopped by voice actors.

darthv7232d ago

that is the current situation. voice actors are 'voicing' their concern over the use of AI. im sure you have heard those TV commercials where you can tell its an AI voice. But as things improve... there will be a point where nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Mr_cheese33d ago

Thegamer are quickly highlighting themselves as a website full of over the top BS

gold_drake32d ago

there is this website from a bunch of devs who developed a more enhanced AI conversational voice thing, where u can talk to them.

i did for 10 minutes and it freaked me out how real it sounded. it did glitch a few times but damn. the, in real time, chatter and response was amazing and frightening at the same time ha

Kyizen32d ago

One of the original Toy Story developers summed it up nicely. Basically when they were doing Toy Story people were shocked you are going from hand drawn art to computers but now no one blinks an eye and most if not all anime is 'drawn' on computers. But he also stated this didn't replace artist but just gave them a new tool to use. Now with AI the author is saying it will replace writing but it won't, using it to have dynamic conversations with NPCs or chatter as the character explores the world will avoid that repetitive banter. You will still need writers to craft a good story and make a compelling character(s).

Horizon Forbidden West Struck the Perfect Balance of Tribes for Horizon 3

Horizon Forbidden West may have struck the right balance after adding several new tribes to the series, something which Horizon 3 should try to keep.

No horizon 3 i beg you Sony .. enough of this series already

pwnmaster300053d ago

It literally only had 2 main games and 2 dlc.
Sure it had some spin off but others have more
Halo
Gears
Elder scroll
Uncharted
God of war
Gta
Etc.
Game isnt done yet and just because your tired of it doesn’t mean everyone is.

ravens5253d ago

Exactly. (*All following #s are slightly exaggerated*) There's like 36 CODs. 16 Assassin's Creed. 25 Final Fantasies. 80 Maddens. I hate when we're on the 3rd iteration of a game and people say this.

isarai52d ago

We've had 2 main games, 2dlcs, a vr spinoff, a lego spinoff and soon to be GAAS spinoff

lukasmain53d ago

Why not? It's popular. They're great critically acclaimed games. It need a 3rd game.

northpaws53d ago

@Cacabunga

Only speak for yourself, I want to know how the story ends.

raWfodog52d ago

Same here. I'm enjoying the story. I want to see what happens when Nemesis arrives.

JEECE53d ago

It all depends on if it's actually a massive step forward or if it just feels like an iterative sequel. There's a lot of revisionist history now about how "mid" Horizon has always been, but people weren't saying that when Zero Dawn came out-people were pretty much universally into it. The major hit against it at the time was that it came out too close to Breath of the Wild.

The problem with Forbidden West is that it took five years and it was just an iterative sequel. Iterative sequels can be fine, or even great, but when five years pass and a new generation of consoles comes out, people expect a big jump, and they didn't get it. Stuff that worked in 2017 felt tired by 2022.

3 can't just be Forbidden West with slightly better graphics. It needs to actually be a meaningful leap.

ravens5253d ago

Im looking forward to the 3rd game. I'd like that to be the last one though. New IP after would be ideal.

jznrpg53d ago

Took me a little while to get into Forbidden West because I was playing on hard but it was really damn good once I got into a groove.

I want to see the ending of this trilogy so hopefully it’s not too far out. Hopefully whoever plays Sylens can do the character justice.

isarai52d ago

I dunno, i LOOOOVED Zero Dawn, but i wanted Forbidden West to be over by like the halfway point. It's an absolutely gorgeous game but damn was it buggy for a while after release, and the enemies and combat felt so janky and unbalanced compared to the first.

This is a step back for PlayStation and PC gamers. These anti consumer policies need to end.

Tacoboto94d ago

At a time where other third parties have started to pull back on their additional logins, Sony triples down on it.

Post-launch update too. Again.

anast94d ago

If someone is willing spend thousands on renting games and microtransactions, which are peak anti-consumer, they will put up with this. It's a step in the same direction as all the other platforms.

PRIMORDUS93d ago

You know you can just get the game for $0.00 on PC lol. The hell with Sony.
