Why can't those characters just release with the game? I mean, the content is already there, just put them in the game. Oh wait, of course, fighting games can't just have the full roster at launch anymore, they have to be chopped up and sold to you piece by piece.

Guilty Gear Strive lauched with 15 and King of Fighters is launching with 39.

What is a full roster? What is the satisfactory number for launch?

By full roster, I am talking about characters that are already there but left out so they can sell it to us at a later date. This video demonstrates that some of the characters being sold as DLC are already fully playable. They should be in the game.

So you're assuming that they wouldn't make money from game sales? Isn't that enough?

You people have been conditioned to believe that these companies need to come up with extra ways to make money. How they tricked you so easily is baffling to me, especially when you see the CEO's at these companies taking away huge bonuses every year.

Yeah, ‘they need to make money’.

Well, guess what. When they announce expensive ‘season passes’ with characters they’ve left out of the game just so they can sell them separately, it automatically means I shrug my shoulders and forget about buying the game.

The fighting game genre is killing itself with its own greed. Yeah, hardcore fans of the genre might still invest in these games by buying them at launch and buying the season passes, but ‘hardcore fans’ is a pretty small group. A few gens ago, series like Dead or Alive, Street Fighter, Tekken, SoulCalibur, etc also appealed to mainstream gamers. New game came out, they spent 50-60 bucks on them, and could enjoy a complete game for a few years.

Mainstream gamers aren’t gonna drop 60 bucks on a game and within a few months are faced with an incomplete roster because 1 or 2 expensive Season Passes came out. They’ll just skip the game completely and spend their money on something else.

So yeah, ‘they need to make money’, but alienating the big mainstream audience because you’re intent on nickel & diming your small group of hardcore fans probably results in a whole lot less money you’ll be making.

Fighting games need to be sustainable over time so they sadly do this to keep interest over time with anticipation. That said, just because a character is in a functional state doesn't mean extensive balancing work and such. Trailers always make things look like they're in better shape than they truly are.

Either or, most devs continue developing even after they're done what's planned for the base game in preparation for whats to come next. After waiting like 6 months to even hear about what was in Ni no Kuni II's dlc. They started way later clearly. But that's an issue in itself.

But in the end it's always about maximizing profits

It definitely sucks with most fighting games as they tend not to offer much value outside of just an arcade mode and some unlockables. There needs to be more value to these games as their arcade modes are pretty short and are just their for unlocking things. The story/arcade modes in most fighting games barely qualify as stories. I wish more fighting games had an extensive character creator like soul caliber and multiple well invested modes like smash.
