CNN is reporting that the PS3 is sinking as we speak and isn't showing any signs of stopping. They site three reasons pertaining to sales, games and Blu-Ray. TVGB discusses whether these facts are true or if CNN is missing the point.

I never experienced such an outright desire on the part of the media and gamers to see a company fail. What the F is going on? Even when 360's were breaking left and right there wasn't this level of criticism. When Nintendo basically said "the heck with hardcore games, we're going to take that gamecube and make it casual," no one was as angry as it seems people are at the PS3.

At this point I don't even read these articles. Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Killzone 2, Infamous, and so many more I can't even list them right now.

PS3 is fine. As soon as Sony drops that price to 299.99 it's game over.

There is NOTHING that has gone wrong with the PS3 this year. The ONLY thing is the sales in ONE country in ONE month.

The games have delivered.
The PS3's firmware has been updated and expanded.
Blu-ray won the format war, and is rising in popularity.

The only negatives are in the media. If you own a PS3, you'd be satisfied with the games you've played and the experience you've had this year.

I own a PS3 and it's not even the same system it was when I first got it in March of 07.

I upp'd the HDD, got a 1080p tv, and the games have jumped leaps and bounds.
Blu-ray is just amazing. Free online with dedicated servers! Holy crap.

I'm seriously thinking that PS3 may be the best console I ever bought. I love this even more than I loved my SNES.

And the best part is that the PS3 hasn't even released half of it's killer apps. Sony's best IPs have yet to DROP people!

The only people that are bishing are the people that don't own a PS3. Relax guys. It'll be 299.99 soon.

The hate for Sony is for the same reason it was at the beginning of this war. It is because of the arrogance of a large number of the PS crowd. They have been screaming from the rooftops that the PS3 is going to dominate this generation since before the PS3 hit the shelves and everyone can clearly see that is just simply not going to happen. I personally own all three consoles and think each and every one has its' place. But I also can see that the 360 is not going to blow the PS3 out of the water any time soon nor is the PS3 going to blow the 360 out of the water. If sales get really bad, Sony cut the price of the PS3. It may hurt their profitability, but if things get really really bad, they won't hesitate to cut it, and things aren't that bad yet. Bad sales for 1 or 2 months doesn't mean they are sinking.

The ONLY, and i repeat ONLY problem with the PS3 is it's price. Which isn't overpriced btw, because for what you get, it's good value.

PS3 has excellent EXCLUSIVE games, it has had more excellent and varied games in 2008 then 360 had, and has an outstanding line-up for 2009 when 360 has next to nothing of note. And for the games on ps3 that don't make 2009, all that means is another excellent line-up for 2010. Where are your games 360?

LBP may not be selling as well as it should, and i don't know why. Because its possibly the game of the year. If you do not have this game, you are missing out.

Y'know Xbox 360 is cheap, FOR A REASON. It has OLD tech in it, and had to drop its price for the second time this year because the more expensive ps3 was STILL outselling it worldwide every week. I have a PS3. I only tend to use it for blu ray or exclusives, and favour my 360, but it still is a cool machine, no doubt.

But two quick points I want to make:

1) the price is killing it. It needs a price cut, but I don't think they can afford it. A local games' store manager mate has told me that this Christmas season he has only sold a couple, with 360 and Wiis doing very very well. That's only one store, true, but if other are doing the same then that's not good. He sold a ton when the new larger HDD came in but since then, even with an extra game like LBP, he can't move them. They even are in front of the store, in prime visual position. He says everyone is waiting for a 'mythical' price cut this Christmas and then buying a 360 when they find out there is none yet.

2) PS3 NEEDS to do well. If Sony, in the current economic climate, decides to toss it in with the PS3, then there will be no competition for Xbox at its level (the Wii is a different beast). That's not good because competition makes companies try harder.

You may love your PS3, and that's great, and it has some fantastic exclusives coming but Home etc. has just not made a difference yet. Only a price cut will.

Alot of people get mad money after the holidays though...having a price cut to boon times of the year that are usually slow for the industry might be a better move we see. I enjoyed MGS4 and GTAIV coming @ the time they did waiting for a holiday would of sucked.

You added them up wrong. The total for the PS3 up to November is 2,823,400 based on those numbers you provided so the difference between the two consoles is 471,600 so far this year, almost exactly what the difference was between the two in November.

That's quite a difference from 2007 which saw the PS3 move 1.86 million in the US in it's first year from Jan to November vs the 360 which sold 3.7 million in the US. So in the US this year PS3 sales are up 55% while 360 sales are down 7%.

Perhaps CNN should be looking at both consoles a bit closer before they assess which console seems to be struggling.

PS1/PS2 are for pure gaming... PS3 gives more options, but people just don't get it. Therefore it feels way too expensive. If you only want to play games there are other cheaper options = PS3 failing in a gaming point of view.

People could stop been so childish and competitive and look at the bigger picture. No console is going to "win" anything. Each console has its pro's and cons, its good games and its bad games. I'm one of the luckiest gamers there is, because I get to enjoy GOOD games, across all platforms, I'm a gamer, not a "consoler".

Did the Xbox 1 sink when it had 80 milion less units sold (than the PS2)? The current gap is somewhere around 5 milion units, for Pete's sake. Everyone's trying to make a big story out of this and they're all failing horribly due to their apparent lack of brains.

As for the games, it's safe to say that the PS3 has the advantage on this one since mid 2008 and continuing in 2009. The problem is that those monkeys in the press are still trying to milk the ''PS3 has no gaems'' stories. And people believe them so they go buy a Wii.

By sinking, CNN merely refers to Sony's lost of dominance within the gaming market. To that end, it defintely sunk, as did Gamecube years before.

Furthermore, those new games you mentioned above signify nothing in turns of overal strategy. As I have mentioned myriad times before, Sony has already been catering to the hardcore market. That's not the issue.

Quite the contrary, the PS3 must manage to appeal to new audiences, if it is to gain some serious momentum, not 10-20,000 units gain for just one month.

I agree, to some extent, that- given PS3's steady decline in sales, coupled with the fact that they have unveiled no new strategy to attract casual consumers- Sony may never catch up with Microsfot or Nintendo in sales. Again, the key word here is casual consumers. Sony has maxed out on geeks. If- inter alia- HS, Resistance, Resistance 2, Ratchet, Uncharted, GT, or MGS 4 didn't convince hardcore consumers to adaopt a PS3 than nothing will.

Sony should know better, and I supect their banking on Home to be their second "LBP" phenomen. This, in my opinion, will determine PS3's sales future more so than Killzone or Final Fantasy.

A final point, no one expects Sony to implode, or vanish from the gaming industry. Simply, all that is being considered is will it retain at least some of its former glory? The answer right now seems to be a resounding HEll NO.

PS3 sold more prior to the months of September (according to the NPD) does not give us a sufficient level of analysis. For we must also consider by how much PS3 outsold Xbox. To that end, we must conclude that MS did in fact play the smarter hand for this year.

Moving forward, your argument concerning PS3's future has no substance, considering 1) those titles you mentioned are nothing but a regurgitation of the console's present game offerings (meaning the dichotomy between Hardcore and Casual). 2) If Sony does not reduce its price by the holidays, or at least January, than any future price cut ill be practically worthless compared to the bombast Xbox will have in december and january respectively.

In sum, if Sony did indeed plan this early exhaustion in market share, than it was a very, very, stupid decision. Unless, perhpas, their prime objective lies with next generation. I think perhaps what most are taking offence to here, is the implication that the PS3 will end up like the Titanic - which according to my memory, sank to the bottom of the ocean in one of the biggest maritime disasters of our time.

CNN therefore is implying that Sony has gone from complete dominance to one of the biggest failures of the world - 0% market share - which they haven’t. It is like comparing the PS3 to the US Auto industry – once a former glory, now months away from dieing without government intervention. The PS3 is in no way months away from dieing, but it is firmly in 3rd place, on this we agree. But that alone does not make it a Titanic, considering total sales are up around 60% from last year, although I stand to be corrected on that.

A steady stream of high profile games being released DOES in fact give some insight into overall strategy – we have debated this at some length before, and I do not have the time to do so again. I agree, in order to ‘pass’ Microsoft in sales in a short timeframe, that Sony must attract the casual market in greater form. The key though, is the exact timeframe – If the ‘next generation’ starts when Sony says so, does the ‘next generation’ then end when Microsoft (or CNN) conveniently say so?

In addition, Ratchet was hardly a direct appeal to the hardcore market, and I disagree with the notion that many of the games being released in 2009 are ‘regurgitations of the consoles current offerings’ – to use the reasoning of the “dichotomy between Hardcore and Casual” essentially lumps all of the 360`s games in the same logic – Halo Recon, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell – all appeals to the hardcore dichotomy, and thus the same strategy of ‘regurgitation’.

Yes, the constant stream of “wait until 2008/2009/2010” does get rather amusing after a while. But so does the other side claiming that the 360`s price drops was “smart business and good strategy” and the PS3`s past (and inevitable future) price drops were “desperate comebacks from a dieing platform”.

Most reading this post cannot fathom the complexity and far reaching implications of proper transnational corporate strategy, and thus wank over extra sales of 10,000 units or whatever. Rival companies can – and do – comfortably co-exist alongside each other. Sony and Microsoft are this category – sales year to year are virtually the same, give or take a few 100,000 units. They are, and will, continue to co-exist and provide value to brand and shareholders, for this generation and the next - much like Mercedes Benz and BMW, rolling out new models every 5 years.

Basic Porter strategy 101 – competition leads to innovation, hence Sony (a few months back, I think it was Kaz) in an interview said they were pleased the 360 was doing well as it pushed Sony to continually provide more value to attract and retain new customers. Mr Greenburg, on the other hand, likes to talk about how much they are beating Sony in select territories. I think that gives the public a decent insight into the direction of the two companies. Its your choice to decide which one you like better.

In that sense, there exists no "gate keeper" to this generation beyond that which is profitable for either of the three console manufactures. For Microsoft did not discontinue Xbox at the behest of Sony, the exalted market leader at the time, but on behalf of their stockholders, profit strategies, etc. So too, then, will Sony's sustenance within this current generation depend on whehter or not it can accrue sufficient levels of profit. As of now, PS2 is all that is keeping them in this race, but that gorgeous flame is flickering, and will eventually thin out.

Now, although one cannot rationalize PS3's success based on current sales alone, one can,however, speculate that if Sony's console strategy is not signifacntly altered, or disregarded altogether, than the short term gains necceasry for it to accumulate long term success will forever remain a lucid pipe dream for both the company, and the desperate fans who cling at its pompous doorsteps.

You, suprisingly, cited Ratchet as one of Sony's ventures at the casual audience. So what, my good friend? The argument I posed ealier was not that Sony's management need TRY to grasp the attention of casual consumers, but that they MUST obtain said audience as if their very bonus checks depended on it. We can therefore assign Ratchet into the same category as LBP, if you wish, however, that still does not negate the fact that Sony failed miserably in its (theorized) objectives.

The final point I wish to make corresponds to the 360. In effect, we both agree that MS's first party line up (that which has been officially announced) consists solely of hardcore titles a la Sony.

However, as I argued to you previously, MS's main allocation of resources was not directed towards 1st party support, but online service and third party support. Therefore, it does not matter if Microsoft- by itself- manages to capture the causual audience because it is enlisting the help of others to achieve that objective.

To date, Sony's eggs are placed in its own basket; in contrast, there have been reports of MS cutting various components of its Game Studios . What sort of trend does this indicate. Clearly, MS and Sony are empoying different strategies. Unfortunately, for Sony, their self-financed strategy has reaped no fruits, but has in turn cost them resources.

Microsoft retains the advantage, then, because their means of innovation and casual breakthrough are "outsourced", thereby reducing the principal costs.

Because sales data shows that the PS3 in the 2 years on the market is outpacing the sales the 360 had in its first 2 years. So if the PS3 is a failure, what does that make the 360? Year to date info also shows the PS3 outselling the 360 in North America and Japan combined which doesn't even include all of the other territories where the PS3 reigns supreme (over the 360). I have a PS3 and 360; I seriously fail to see these apparently jaggy ports; maybe in the past, but not since mid 2007.

Admittedly the PS3 is expensive in the UK, but only more so obvious in the last few months, thing is a cheaper to manufacture console can be cheaper to sell. PS3 games come on Blu-Ray, so it couldn't be cheaper with the Blu-Ray drive removed, because then it wouldn't play games!
Also, in total, for what you get packed and bundled with a PS3 purchase you have everything you need, buying stuff for the 360 is like building Lego, brick by brick until you have a machine capable of gaming.

I really think articles like the CNN article he references are completely wrong to talk about the success of a console until the console generation is officially over---that meaning, that it is after all consoles of the previous generation are no longer sold at retail. I think that determines whether a console has succeeded or failed.

But right now, I agree with what the article says, definitely:
1: Undeniably, it is the most expensive console. Can't say much, but it can definitely affect sales right now.
2: Blu-ray simply can't be determined as success or failure yet. I think that because it simply hasn't been on the market long enough yet. I still know people who aren't aware that HD DVD isn't around anymore. But still, I think it's a matter of slow adoption of HD and Blu-ray more than anything else, hindered further by the impending economic crisis.
3: The PS3 does in fact have must-have exclusives. I have played Resistance 2, and I'm excited to play Valkyria Chronicles and LittleBigPlanet. Not to mention, we have some real winners like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and Resistance: Fall of Man to look back on. Not to mention a rich catalogue full of games on the PSN to enjoy that cannot be found on other consoles.

I'm not saying that PS3 is in the clear. I still find fault with it, but it is my favorite console through and through, and I enjoy every moment I have with it. I think that if it fixes its price, more people will adopt. It's just that the gaming industry, contrary to popular belief, is not immune to the looming worldwide economic depression as money becomes less disposable. Value doesn't win over cost in times like this.

I'll make this brief. The Ps3 was sinking back in 2007 when people were throwing around rumors of Sony cutting the Ps3 altogether and going to work on a new Ps3 (Ps3.5 or Ps4). But that didn't happen. Now that things are better and games are flowing NOW their sinking? I doubt it. The Ps3 is here to stay for the remainder of this gen. While it won't take 1st place that doesn't determine if it was a good console or not. The games and the experience defines a console not the sales. I'm glad you're taking advantage of the PS3's "capabilities." I'm glad you're willing to shell out all that time and money to buy another computer. I, on the other hand, and very happy with the rival system that has "last gen tech." Failure rates? They are absolutely miserable and a major misstep, but somehow they've weathered that. Which is, as much as it sucks, impressive.

If you're going to argue "last gen tech," I think you need realize that simple is always better. Core processors? What has that accomlished exactly? Unfortunately, the Unreal engine is the most used third party engine, and the PS3's market-ignorant "next-gen" guts can't handle it well. That is one, of many, of the missteps SONY has made.

I work a lot, and the ease of function and amount of content that the 360 has been the perfect solution for a gamer who really needs his daily escape as painlessly as possible (again, talking about ME and MY OPINION, you have clearly made great use of the PS3).

The article is wrong. Unless Sony can make the price competitive though they'll always be in third place. This recession is going to murder their sales. That's not really their fault though. They gambled on making an advanced, high priced machine and it didn't work out for them.

Third place isn't bad though. They'll be fine. Hopefully they'll take the lessons learned from the PS3 and apply them to the PS4. I really hope they don't go the Wii route though. That would be bad.

What gets me the most out of this (and other similar stories) is that some US media seems to think the world stops at their coastline.

Big deal, it dropped 19% in the US. It really doesn't reflect the rest of the world where the PS3 has made huge gains.

As for the reasons given:

1) It's only the most expensive if you're a bit stupid, factor in the extras and it works out cheaper than buying an Arcade and upgrading/paying subscriptions.
2) If no one cares about bluray, why is it flooding store space where ever I go? Strange, normally a retailer will only stock in bulk after trials and if the product has consumer confidence.
3) No must have exclusives? What planet are these guys on... MGS4, Uncharted, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, etc. Compare this to the other consoles exclusives and I think you'll find the PS3 has the strogest out of the 3.

I used to think CNN were fairly reliable, now I'd have to question

It is still in second place in sales... it's major competitor is slashing its prices to be even lower in some places than its previous gen (PS2) console. The PS3 will see a price cut - but they are in no sense in trouble. With the launch of the Sony Store the prices is much more competitive.

With a pricedrop the PS3 sales will increase and stay ahead of the XB360.

Sony's really taken a beating in the press this week. I'm sure that they'll weather this storm and get straight.

People around here don't want to admit it. They blindly click disagree and pop bubbles over it. But the PS3's price is somewhat holding it back. So far the November numbers prove that. Once we see what Europe did then we'll have the complete picture. In this economy, if value were more of a consideration than price then Microsoft wouldn't have sold more than twice as many consoles in November. Sony's year over year sales wouldn't have dropped. Sales are down. There's no disagreeing with that.

I don't believe that it's the end of the PS3. Sony still has time to make PS3 more competitive and I know that they'll do just that.

Being a Blu-ray player is not helping either, as it cannot be priced lower than a standard blu-ray player otherwise they wouldn`t sell... Until Blu-ray players come down in price PS3 will remain Expensive. (In respect to a game console)

I may not care for it too much, but there are millions who do. This scares MS (and maybe even Nintendo a little bit). Okay CNN, what is up with you? They know where in a recession to all sales are down, the price is high up there yet people are still buying the system thus it is still selling. The same goes for the 360 and the Wii [shouldn't even have to mention the Wii and how it's doing, but ya know...]

1. Yes it is but is it really? The xbox 360 is 200.00 but since we are on a gaming website then doesn't that mean we all play online? That is another 49.99. But 256mb gets us far with the new NXE. We all need more that 1/4GB on our hard drive, I 60GB Hard drive is 106.00 which is still 20GB short of the the PS3 80GB. All that is basically essential if you buy the arcade. That leaves the xbox 360 at $355.99 just shy of the PS3, but mom and dad don't know this when they buy there kid a xbox, and the 200 family game. I don't know, is Gears and halo for a family? That is just the essential stuff, I have a a PS3 in my room and I have to use the wi-fi and it works great, most people have DC but isn't the wi-fi adapter $100.00.

2. Blu-Ray is growing on the world 147,000 blu-ray players were sold this month already and thousands more want it. The Dark Knight and Iron Man are incredible on Blu-Ray 1080P. Lets face it Blu-ray will eventually beat reg. DVD and make it into our homes in the next 2 yrs.

3. No exclusives, I can understand how people can think this because SONY cant advertise, but we have quite a few. MGS4 10 out of 10 from multiple gaming websites and magazines. Resistance 2 can easily be compared to Gears 2. Little Big Planet and creators paper and is truly a game for everyone. For the hardcore gamers Killzone 2, Looks amazing and even xbox fanboys will say so. GOW3 looks real and I think that Phillips is making a special 400GB disk to fit it all on. Uncharted 2.

2. i just bought a 360 (used) since my apartment was robbed of 2 ps3's, a tv, a psp and a few other things.

i cant find anything to play on it. i downloaded some rpg demos. pretty crappy, or i could just play just as good rpg games on the ps2 that only look better on the 360.

gears of war 2? overrated in my opinion. i cant even get the ambition to finish the game. i looked through the list of games to get that i dont already have for the ps3 (the actual games were not taken) and cant find anything on the 360 that i would actually want to pay for.

the point is that to say the ps3 doesnt have any exclusives worth playing is only an opinion. i'm more anxious to get my new ps3 next week and play my ps3 exclusives than sit down with 360 exclusives.

again, that is my opinion but if i were a blog writer i would be taken seriously?

3. the price. once you go high def you never go back. i have movies downloaded that i stream to the tv via the game consoles. i forgot how crappy tv movies look compared to blu ray. i can stream to the 360 but the console is so loud you cant enjoy the movie experience.

when you bundle the blu ray player with ps3 games, ability to get a 500gb hard drive for $99, as well the linux and internet browser.

the value is actually on point if not cheap.

360 + wireless + blu ray player with no internet or cheap second computer = $299 + $99 + $50 yr + $250 + extra devices taking up space.

or a ps3 with all the bells and whistles in one device.

i'm not regretting the 360 purchase. but aside from its dreamcast like feature of being hackable. i still cant justify a 360 purchase.

i want to try left 4 dead though. i think that one is one i will enjoy. but other than that i don't see the 360 having the better library. again my personal opinion.

HOME vs NXE? no competition. not even in the same league.

NXE is pretty. And runs Smoothly. but thats it. i dont see any new offering from the previous method.

HOME is like gta4. when you go play pool and watch your in game tv. only its online with other people. big difference.

Netflix? cool new feature. its easily a better feature on the 360. although my workaround was watching it on the ps3 via Playon software.
the benefit? the ps3 (or 360 if you use playon) is not restricted to the movies not available on 360 due to licensing.

the downside? the 360 is a direct link so the quality is much better.

Third Party library? the games are to date, for the most part on par with each other. Companies like Epic are in bed with the 360 but they know how to make ps3 games well too aside from insomniac and naughty dog. look at unreal tournament 3 for the ps3. it runs as smooth as any best games for the ps3. proving that the developer is the key not the consoles short comings. this proves neither console is relatively weaker but that the developer is either weak or strong.

Every article I read here is about how the PS3 sucks the sales are dropping, the number of games are slow to be produced. Well the Ps3 is a great system sure it may have tripped and arrived a year late to market so what. If i remeber in here there is an article about how developers do not tap the full potential of the Ps3 cause there lazy i say.

When the first Xbox was released to market people were not complaining about how its sales were compared to the Ps2. Saying the system will sink, personally i think who wrote this article take your crystal ball and shove it get a real job or get laid. Rome was not built in a day I know one thing Sony has behind their machines and thats quality. How many Xbox 360s when they came to market had the RROD. All for the simple fact the wanted to be the first on the market and what did they skip quality. I am glad Sony arrived late to the market knowing they took the time to test every machine.

I say Sony is being cautious about the current market situation keeping an eye and not over spending. Now if the rumors about Microsoft paying money to all these companies to secure a game on the system i say let them eventually it will bite them in the ass. You don't see alot of people raggin out Microsoft cause Vista is a piece of Garbage. No they pick on Sony cause there sales are down and they lost alot of exclusives. So what you going to pick On GM, Ford Chrysler cause they need gov't bale out cause their sales are dwindling.

I say the current situation for the Ps3 is a lesson for the PS4 on what there strengths and weaknesses are. Also I would not mind seeing a 40gig or even a 20gig Ps3 being released with a lower price so those on a fixed income can buy one for their kids this Xmas.
A true gamer does not care about sales of a system A true gamer is someone who picks a system and sticks with it. Wether it be 360 or Ps3 or even a Wii. And if you can afford all three systems then your a real gamer.
