Opinion: The Problem With Game Remakes

The recent trend of game remakes has proven to be both good and bad for the industry, here's why.

Magog874d ago

I prefer new IPs to sequels or remakes.

LoveSpuds873d ago (Edited 873d ago )

I don't see it as an 'either, or' problem. Demons Souls Remake was utterly incredible, Final Fantasy 7 remake was fantastic as was Shafow of the Colossus and Resi 2, but these remakes haven't led to a shortage of new games. Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War 5, Halo Infinite, Deathloop, Death Stranding....the list is endless.

Magog873d ago

Yeah those are great examples of creating classic games for the modern age. The freshest gameplay is always from new IPs though.

Remakes are fine, but when it's only a remake of a popular game in the past, it tends to be depressing. Obscure games deserve a chance too.

NecrumOddBoy874d ago

Obscure games get remakes as well but they need more love and less focus on HD polish. RE2 was so great because it truly modernized a title that is barely playable anymore. That’s what all remakes (not remasters) need.

FreeckyCake874d ago

@necrumoddboy

They rarely do, and when an Obscure game gets a remake, there's no guarantee the game will sell. Kinda reminds me of Baroque on the Saturn and how it received a remake on the PS2.

"Obscure games deserve a chance too"

Which is why they really need to remake Bugs Bunny Lost in Time or Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf

FreeckyCake874d ago

Hell yes. I'd like to see a Hulk: Ultimate Destruction remake. That would be awesome!

NecrumOddBoy873d ago

Bugs Bunny Lost in Time is one of the greatest Platforming Collectathons ever made! I think this game is up there with Mario 64 and Banjo as one of the best in the late 90’s. 10000% want a remake or sequel.

TheDoomedGuy873d ago

I want a timsepsitters remake so bad.

SinisterMister873d ago

Holy shit a 2021 remake of Hulk Ultimate Destruction would be fucking epic. But they have to get someone like Insomniac on the project though. Don't want no Marvel's Avengers on our hand again.

Godmars290873d ago

While they tend to look better they often cut corners in regard to the original's gameplay and story.

Magog873d ago

Sad but true. High detail assets are much harder and more expensive to make than ancient ones.

SinisterMister873d ago

The writer makes a fair point, but I don't think there's really a problem when a remake loses the originality of the game. I mean, if you want originality, you can always play the original game. Remakes are supposed to be give you a modern-day experience, wouldn't one agree?

TheDoomedGuy873d ago

Well we all know Sony is the only ones actually doing good remakes....along with a few other devs on occasion. Seems more like a jab article than honesty.

We're getting more than just high quality remakes after all.

Darkborn873d ago

I don't see a bad thing with a remake. It's just a better form of backwards compatability. Like playing the spyro trilogy again was amazing, it looked and played way better, but the game itself is fantastic. Some games deserve remakes, others not so much. I just don't want to see too many games remade instead of new IP getting a chance.

LoveSpuds873d ago

Yeah, those Spyro remakes were fabulous, so much fun to plat too.

EKWB reportedly plagued with financial disarray many gaming pc's left without parts

EK Cooling allegedly has slipped itself into a hot soup of seemingly endless financial woes, where it has not paid its staff, suppliers, and contractors for many months as the company is facing liquidity problems and a surplus of inventory left unsold, stuck in the warehouse for a more extended period. Gamers Nexus investigated these claims made by former and current personnel, where he found trails of unpaid bills lasting as long as three to four months and unpaid raises that accumulated for almost a year.

EK Water Blocks has two entities—a Slovenian-based headquarters and a US-based subsidiary, EK Cooling Solutions. Steve narrated the series of events in detail, stating that the company was reportedly irresponsible and negligent regarding payment. Consequently, partners and employees are forced to share the burden of alleged mismanagement. It all begins with its extensive range of products, leading to a surplus of goods. EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Yes this is not about video games directly but indirectly this will impact the pc gaming/workstation space hard.

This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

SO yeah i know not about a video game but think of it as amd leaving the pc space but this is ekwb that could be leaving water cooling in the pc space

As someone that has built a watercooling rig. EK is big, but there's so many numerous watercooling part companies out there. EK's stuff isn't exactly amazing quality for the price compared to others either, it's just ok. Much like Corsair. The impact would be negligible long term. For perspective the majority of my parts are XSPC, at most I use EK for my gpu waterblocks and fittings. Both easily replaceable.
