Sony announced its financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2021, including an update on PS5 and PS4 shipments.
Oh well, "It’s worth mentioning for those who aren’t familiar with this kind of figure, that this doesn’t mean that PlayStation operated at a loss. They still made a very large profit, but it was simply lower than in the equivalent quarter in 2020. This is not unusual close to the beginning of a new generation."
This is what happens when you don't massage the figures for the sake of PR...
Gaming hardware revenue grow by 300% YoY for last quarter
PS4 is a mere 2 million away from outselling Game Boy If Sony dropped the price and marketed it as a budget console like they did with PS1 and PS2 in their latter years they’d surely pass that milestone
Surprised they didnt already, guess they trying to squeeze everything $ out of it.
Unlikely. PS4 sales are very slow atm, reaching 118.7M is kinda hard. Ps4 already did great, amazing console, +115M is a great number, congrats to Sony.
lowering the price at this time is pointless as they likely can't manufacture and ship any more than they are now
It has already outsold Game Boy. Websites inexplicably combine Game Boy and Game Boy Color sales, even though Game Boy Color was a new system with new exclusives. And no, it's not like One X or PS4 Pro, or even like that New 3DS that had like 3 exclusive games not playable on the original 3DS. Game Boy Color had a ton of games you couldn't play on the original Game Boy. Combining it with Game Boy is like combining Vita with PSP because Vita could play PSP games.
You're right. I think the only reason it's done like that is because that's the only number Nintendo provided.
I like that vita psp example jeece. That makes a lot of sense.
I just bought another ps4 yesterday. It was second hand, and already counted towards their overall total but its new to me. Monster hunter pro edition. Now Im at 15 different PS4 systems.
Still can't find a PS5 though. Hot cakes ain't the word.
that's not really true you can plenty of PlayStation 5's just not at $500 if you're willing to pay double you can get a PlayStation 5 whenever you want 😁
That’s because most people aren’t buying them at double and they sit their for sale .
And a sold ps5 is still a sold ps5
@jznrpg oh someone gonna kick out double for a playstation 5 if they want one really bad
How many active ps5 users ? , that's the question, scalpers don't give a damn about it.
Scalpers are not even 10% of sales, so yeah, likely over 12M are active users, same goes for Xbox. Xbox Series likely +7M active users and Ps5 at +12M A.U Edit: I realy hope you are not one of the guys that think Xbox Active user base is bigger than playstation...
No , I'm not , I just wanna state facts.
ok, sorry if it felt like i was jumping the gun on you. yeah, there are some scalpers here and there, sadly.
Do you think scalpers just collect the systems?
Yeah and they keep them in a big warehouse, and even though they can't sell them to actual gamers, they are continuing to buy them all up. /s
I guess your wondering how many are scalpers for Xbox 8 million to right or switches??
LOL. If someone would actually click into the article.... They have 47.2 million active PlayStation Plus subscribers and 104 million active users. Down 4 million active users from Q2 2020 and up 1.3 million PS Plus subscribers from Q2 2020. They don't say anything about PSNow. PR at work!
Then they don't support their console that much , this issue isn't new and unfamiliar with playstation, players don't support their console that much.
This it's how it's done. No spin the numbers. Not revenue, but profit.
It's standard to list both revenue and profit. You have to state your top and bottom lines and explain how your operating costs break down and such. Every company lists both. Stating revenue isn't "spinning the numbers". Have you ever actually invested, or do you just pretend to know what you're talking about?
MS doesn't list revenue and net income for Xbox for years now
To be clearer from my previous post. MS don't list both revenue and net income for Xbox. Only revenue. For years, of course.
PR numbers. Comparing the worst numbers of the Gen, the last year of a console, with the first year of a new console and talk about 200% growth. Spinning number... Beside the fact that Revenue isn't profit...
Sorry porkChop but leaving out important data points is another form of spin.
Really? Because I see Microsoft reporting a 16% growth in revenue for their gaming division last quarter, and only a 2% increase in income specifically for Xbox content and services. You're saying they don't list income for Xbox and yet they actually do. Like I said, every company lists both, they have to.
Well… when Microsoft’s market share dipped so bad last gen, it is easy to say growth in a launch year.
Considering how constrained production of the PS5 has been, its incredible that it has sold that kind of quantity so quickly. So thankful I was able to pre-order mine for launch as it sounds like a nightmare trying to acquire one at the moment. I see one or two salty comments trying to suggest gamers aren't buying the PS5, scalpers are. Clearly thousands of consoles have found their way into the hands of scalpers but you only have to look at the sales numbers for software to see that the consoles are very much getting into the hands of gamers for the most part. The notion that PS5 sales are only that high because scalpers are sat on warehouses full of millions of consoles shows how desperate some people are to play down Playstation's success at any cost.
The only way to get one is by being persistent and following closely those who know when shipments drop.
Gamers are buying them. Its just they either get lucky with retailers or resort to hitting up a scalper. But a unit sold is still a unit sold. How many of these units are actually plugged in at someones house and being used vs still sitting in their box is anyones guess. I know I use mine.
Lol another 13 million shipped. That more units than the population of nyc and a couple of small towns. But I still can't walk into a best buy, target, gamestop, Walmart etc and find even one console not even a picture an empty box or any semblance of hope in finding one in this lifetime. This is straight bs.
You're not going to find one randomly sitting on the store shelf. I don't know what you've done so far but people that really want one are following Twitter, Discord, Reddit etc. for restock times. Getting multiple people involved to have a better chance and just putting in time to secure one. It sucks but there is a global shortage for everything out there, at a certain point if you really want one, you have to ask yourself if the hassle is worth your own time and if it's not, perhaps consider just paying the scalper prices since they have gone down a bit. Best of luck though!
@nakiro yeah I think iam just going to pay scalper price at this point.
Register with PS Direct, set telegram alerts on your phone with nowinstock.net, join a discord server. Follow that Jake guy on Twitter who always gets the target drops right. There are plenty of ways to get one if you are actually willing to do them over a period of time rather than just expecting to be able to waltz into a store and get a highly in demand product during a component shortage.
@jeece Sigh.....yeah your right I've been lazy.
No bs no spin like we see with Microsoft, just the actual numbers and data. Microsoft has moved from not giving hardware numbers to also not giving subscription numbers because they are not doing well.
If it can help you sleep better at night :) I'm sure Ms is not doing great and that is why they don't share data like numbers Surface tablets sold, Number of MS teams licenses sold Copies of Windows 10 sold number of consoles sold etc... But hey! like I said I can go with your saying if make you feel better and help you appreciate Sony's fiscal report.
What does any of those things you listed have to do with Xbox?
@jznrpg Derek implies that MS isn't releasing Xbox hardware numbers or Gamepass numbers because they are not doing well when MS doesn't really release numbers for all their devices and licenses across all products and that is despite the fact that MS has been one of the most profitable company during the pandemic.
Correction Pete, Microsoft use to release numbers until they no longer agreed with the phony picture of success they're trying to cultivate. Now gamepass numbers have gone dark aswell.
Aint MS worth 2 trillion? Something that, and you think they're doing bad roflmao. You can't make this stuff up
How's their gaming sector going? I know people like to brag about MS's money that they earn from having a monopoly, but that doesn't spin into xbox is worth 2 trillion, does it?
Who cares about their other divisions, this is a videogame message board. It's totally irrelevant.
Xbox as a brand is worth over half a trillion and bring 10s of billions of dollars yearly. Like where do yall come up with the stuff you say https://www.thewealthrecord... If bring in billions quarterly is doing bad please sign me up cause I'd like to do bad lol. I understand you hate Xbox and you wanna see it fail but Xbox will be around for a very very long time cause it's doing good. Get use to it.
Sure Chief. Tell me another one.
13.4m is a huge number for this time period. Especially during the pandemic. Sony should be praised for getting these to market in such quantity. Really, we complain about this, but don't really talk about how much more PS5s Sony has been able to make than Xboxs. Why isn't Xbox making as many units? Sony has pumped out 13.4m, and all of them full powered PS5s. That's an incredible feat, and I'm sure many people did a lot of work to make that happen. I'll also say huge missed opportunity by xbox. Even with this number, Sony can't meet demand. If Xbox could have met it, imo generation would look at lot different, but they didn't have stock either, so here we are.
I've wondered about this too. My guess is that Sony has better pipelines in place to component manufacturers and facilities to actually put the consoles together. Obviously MS has far more resources, but at least the way the current shortages have been explained to me, it isn't the case that even a company with almost unlimited cash like MS can just fix the problem by throwing money at it.
You are correct. I suppose that PlayStation is hugely more important to Sony than Xbox is to $2 trillion Microsoft. So they focus on getting more units out.
How? You didn't hear how bad the State of Play was? Who in their right mind would buy a playstation console. /s btw.
