Returnal 2.0 update is here, bringing the ability to suspend your cycle and a photo mode to Atropos!
Photo mode and the ability to suspend a run?? Thank you Housemarque 🙏🏼
Yesss, time to replay this masterpiece!
sounds like a much needed update from what others have said. This is one I have not yet picked up but it looks like the time is right to give it a go.
I hope you are Bering sarcastic … suspend should have been there from the start and Photo mode whatever
You're right it should have been but credit where credit is do, at least they added it based on feedback.
game is goty regardless of this update imo. there were some early bird bugs yes that have been addressed but that doesnt take away anything from what a beautiful and fun game this is to play.
Now I will buy this game.
Suspend? What a pussy ass update smh
Pussy-ass as in it coddles the player too much and removes what you see as a key aspect of Returnal as a hardcore roguelike? Or is there another reason you're upset? I think it was sorely needed and will significantly boost sales. Sometimes (often) life gets in the way of video games, and having the option to suspend will increase the game's allure tenfold. Hell, just hearing about this I'm going to pay the full $69.99 for this game without hesitation.
Well, time to actually play Returnal now.
No excuses now. Play it already! GOTY fasho.
This going up against Forza 5, and Halo? Lol! It would be a different story, if those were up against GOW, Or Horizon Forbidden West.
@iplay1up2 LOL! Are either of those games even eligible? Also, isn't the last time Halo won an award back when Bungie was the developer? Like 2007 or something lol? I don't actually think Returnal will win, it's just my personal GOTY. You're hilarious!
You know Xbox players have it bad when they cross their fingers hoping Sony does not release any of their big hitters in the hope that a Xbox game can stand a chance for GOTY @iplay1up2
Yep. Better late than never on the ability to save and quit. Not sure why some people considered functionality that all of the Souls games have (non-exploitable progression save) as such a big ask. But glad it's here and now I'll play it.
Because there are people who will jump at any perceived opportunity to frame themselves as more hardcore than other players, even if it doesn't really make any sense.
No reason not to play it before.

Suspended makes a huge difference for me. The game goes from unplayable because I've a toddler to now I can stop it and not lose everything. I'll be picking it up now
I managed with 2 toddlers and a newborn. Their quiet times or naps and anytime after 8pm was the time I could play. I would place the ps5 on sleep and that would keep the game suspended so to speak.
Cool. That schedule may not work for OP, so good that he has other options now.
Super cool aside from the fact that a PlayStation update or a game update while in rest most would completely take the piss out of your strategy, hence the necessity for this current patch in the first place
Dude I don't know how you could manage anything with 2 todlers and a newborn ha fair play! I'm run ragged with just the 1!
All babies are different, unfortunately. I have a one and a half year old that hasn't slept since the day she was born and my PS5 has seen barely any use. Every time I get a chance to sit down for a session she kicks off on a mad one..... e-v-e-r-y time....... guaran-fucking-teed!!! 🙁
Yeah. For me, the price to pay to play is sleep. Ida have to sacrifice 2 hours of sleep to get some game time in.
@venom You could also turn off those automatic updates and installs. @monkey As another user said every baby is different but they tend to take after the parents personalities. I come from a family of ridiculously calm people and so does my wife so our kids start sleeping through the night after about 2 weeks and they only wake up once in the night before then. They also take 1 - 2 naps throughout the day that range between 3-5 hours in total. And they're all sleep trained so nights are easy. It gets easier after the 2nd child. As in its always overwhelming and you either begin to let go or you go nuts.
I have a toddler and a newborn. When they go to sleep... I am shattered and ready to sleep myself.
Now it's worth buying and getting into for me. I only have a maximum of an hr of gaming a day, because I have so many other daily responsibilities to take care of
This is now effectivly a different game lol. Still my GOTY . And photo mode!
It's better than it was when it launched but I wouldn't call it different. This is exactly why I wait for a while before jumping into new games, just gets better and cheaper over the time for the most part.
Completely agree. I play almost nothing at launch anymore and usually wait at least a month, but I'm always weary of spoilers though. I didn't play Miles Morales when it launched and by the time I played it, they'd added RT performance, and then they optimized the code and made the internal resolution for ray tracing the same as the overall resolution (4 time higher, I think) after R&C came out. I feel like I got a much better experience than those who played it at launch.
That has definitely been a thing recently. The whole thing for me started because of DLC actually. It just got frustrating having to re-learn the controls and mechanics when a game added something 6 months after I finished it.
I have heard nothing but absolute praise for this game and can't wait to play it myself when i can finally snag a PS5.
its pretty damn good. My GOTY so far
In a way atleast it’s not really a save point. You can save that specific place in the run but it won’t be saved once you resume. You also can’t suspend when you fight a boss or during combat which I think is the best way to do it.
This is weird wording. So does being able to "suspend" my game the same as saving my progress? Is that the same thing?
Yes, before the only way to suspend is to use the console which isn't 100% reliable and people would lose their run because the console decided to update jn the middle of the night. Now it's built in so you can pause it whenever you'd like and come back to the game even if you wanted to play something else for a while.
Oh wait, so no this is not the same as save mode. So you can suspend the game and come back but once you die, you can't go back to where you suspended the game. Well this sucks for me! I thought this was an actual save mode.
The game does half a halfway checkpoint and you can set it so it doesn't update automatically.
Making it so that you can just load the game whenever you want would fundamentally make this a completely different game.
@Nakiro it’s just a option for those that want it nothing change, if you use it or don’t use the option the game play the same and the story still the same 🤷🏿 But sure let’s make a option for those that wanted/ needed it a bad thing 😩 🤦🏿
@1Victor Everybody would use a save option if it was available. It would fundamentally change the game and make many of the mechanics redundant or at least easy to ignore. The game assumes that you're going to die (it's part of the design), so you'd miss out on lots of story content and the progression would get messed up. Players could get a bad "roll" and not realize that they need to die for things to play differently. The effort that the developers put into the random level generation would be a waste. In summary, a manual save option is a terrible idea if you actually think about the implications. The in-game suspend option is perfect, but should have been there at launch. Giving a player limitations and boundaries to work within and against is part of creating the conditions for fun in a video-game.
It's also easy to save scum now. You can easily suspend the game and just upload your save to ps plus. If you die, download save from ps plus and your suspend point.
@LucasRuinedChildhood "It would fundamentally change the game." No, I disagree. It would fundamentally change the game for ME, which is what I actually want. "Giving a player limitations and boundaries to work within and against is part of creating the conditions for fun in a video-game." Until it stops being fun and feels more like labor. I've had this game since launch and I still cannot get past the 2nd boss. I've put my time into this game, believe me! It's not from a lack of trying. However I have ran out of patience. I would just like it if Housemarque would have gamers like me in mind and give us an option to make the game easier to complete. If you or anyone else is happy to continue playing the game as-is, then by all means knock yourself out! I wouldn't try to stop you. However I will never understand this territorial "gate-keeping" mentality that fans try to have towards certain games or why they think options are a bad thing. No one is suggesting that Housemarque should force EVERYBODY to use saves to make the game easier. If they put in an "easy" mode that included manual saving, then just ignore it and continue to play it the way you like. It doesn't change a darn thing for you.
@Raider I preferred this over Save mode tbh
@raider If you still can't beat the second boss then I'm sorry but you shouldn't really play this type of game. Have you tried looking up strategies etc? The game was designed around the idea of an oppressive planet and environment. Stressful gameplay is part of it's design in order to communicate the feeling of dread. By allowing you to save the game at any point it completely removes core aspects of it's design. I would prefer that they simply add a difficulty called easy where you can do that. But if you haven't beaten the game or gotten past the second boss then you need more than that. You need less enemy health and damage and easier bosses. That could be all part of easy mode. I'm perfectly fine with that as long as it's clear that it is not the way the game was intended to be played.
One of the main features of this update is the Suspend Cycle functionality, which will allow you to pause your cycle to be continued later, letting you exit the game and turn off your console without losing your progress in that session. The structure of the game remains unchanged, so this functionality is not a traditional mid-game “Save Game” option: by suspending the cycle, Returnal will simply create a single use suspend point, and once you resume playing the suspend point is deleted and cannot be used again. Your game will continue directly from the moment you left it, and if you want to suspend the cycle again, your progress will be captured from that new point onwards. There are some limitations in place – for example, players won’t be able to create a suspend point during Boss battles, cinematics, first-person sequences or during intense combat scenarios – as we felt there are certain moments in Returnal that are best experienced unfragmented to preserve the intended challenge and flow.
Still my GOTY.
Much agreed! Completed act 3 the other day just need a few more glyphs for the plat. The game is absolutely amazing
This is great, a lot of people were waiting for this.
With or without suspending cycle, still one of the best game out there!
Once you get the hang of it you really don't need any suspend mode. Runs are much faster and you can stop halfway through.
Definitely true, but I think a lot of people were worried about the lack of suspend feature and that might have caused them to hold off. Now they can enjoy it like the rest of us and see what the fuss is all about!
This. When playing at first i died and died on the first biome. Now i can clear every room and enemy including the challenge room and boss in under 20 mins now. Persistance pays off with this game!
That's the beauty of this game, your skills will improve from playing it repeatedly. Because of random rooms, you will not bored. And you will noticed that your runs will be quicker.
Already beat this game to death. May return for any expansions they release but that will be later on this generation if it happens. GOTY for me.
GOTY just got even more GOTY!
No new weapons, abilities, enemies, challenges or areas ? Aghh damn i had too high expectations for this update.
Now the moaning may end! Buy and play, amazing game!
YES! suspend!!! This is a major quality of life improvement. Mind you it should of been in the main release but good job getting it out. Better late than never :)
This is good for this game because it really is an amazing game. Just a little difficult.

From playstation blog.
I wish I could go back to when I mentioned the suspend feature and people jumped on me. I recall having the game PS5 in rest mode when an update occurred and I lost all of my progress. I was told to quit complaining and turn off the PS5's auto-update feature. Lol!
84 hours and over 200 deaths too late. I already beat the game multiple times. I’ll recommend the game to everyone. While it’s a short game( once you get good at it you can beat it in under 2 hours) it’s replayability is off the charts.
Still waiting for a checkpoint, save option, but this will have to do. Now I can get back into this game👏👏👏 ;
Wouldn't that change the very core of the game?
That would be a different game so no thanks in my eyes
The game does have a mid-game checkpoint once you beat the 2nd biome. The runs actually do not have to be long at all. You basically grind a bit to get the weapon, consumables, and parasites (optional) you prefer. Once you have that you go straight to the boss fights. From the start point to the last boss took me 10 minutes tops when I beat it.
Sounds like a great solution to the issues rest mode has caused. Looking forward to booting this up soon.
