The Games Less Traveled: Valkyria Chronicles

Every discrete element that went into creating Valkyria Chronicles was done in such a way as to make the game an emotional experience. 3D graphics are generally measured by how close they come to mimicking real life, but instead, the CANVAS engine sets out to mimic the look and feel of an animated watercolor painting. The world and its characters appear to be hand-drawn, moving works of art, colored with warm, soft tones that present the game as if it were a dream state.

You can particularly appreciate this effect during the more touching sequences that take place outside of combat, where we get to know more about the characters and the lives that they left behind before the war began.
