Far Cry 6 Review - IGN

Far Cry 6 smooths over a lot of the bumps that have cropped up in the past few games and even though it misses some steps, especially with its new inventory system, it's the best the series has been in years.

LucasRuinedChildhood1305d ago (Edited 1305d ago )

76 on Metacritic: https://www.metacritic.com/...

Hopefully this will encourage them to aim for another big leap/change in the franchise like Far Cry 3.

MadLad1305d ago

I would like them to go back to the Farcry 2 model. Making it more gritty and in-depth.

It had its flaws, but I find it the most interesting in the series. I've only played 3 and 5 since.

jjb19811305d ago

FC2 was awesome minus the whole getting Malaria thing.

MadLad1305d ago

@jjb

It would have been an interesting section of the game, dealing with it.

But they far overplayed it and it just became annoying after a while.

JEECE1305d ago

It's crazy that there are still people who won't admit Far Cry 2 was the best one. The started to get way more hand-holdy after that one. Still fun worlds to mess with, but never as good.

Yui_Suzumiya1305d ago

Far Cry 2 turned me off to the series after loving the first game which is why I have yet to play another since. I still want to try 3, 5 and possibly 6. Hopefully none of those are like 2. It was pretty awful.

MadLad1305d ago

@Yui

Honestly, the reasons why a lot of people seemingly like FC2 is probably the reason you don't.
I think a lot of people miss things like taking care of your weapons. A more in-depth health system. Being able to help or betray your comrades at your own expense. Playing games with the different factions. Not to mention just something simple as the fire system getting highly gimped in other releases.

Future games, while they're good, got really arcade-like; a power fantasy. The ones I played were fun though.
Unpopular opinion but I recommend 5 over 3. Especially if you haven't been playing the series since. Unless you just want the island aesthetic of 3, I think 5 plays better all around.

Knushwood Butt1305d ago

Played 2, 3, and just finishing up 4 at the moment.

2 is still my fave, even with enemies spotting you in the grass from miles away and respawning road outposts, lol. I like the immersion and more serious tone in that one.

4 is pretty good. The radio DJ gets annoying and is really juvenile, and the druggy stoner guys are pretty annoying too, but overall I've had fun with it and may even try for 100% completion.

Playing on PS4 and a couple of the trophies require online play.

Christopher1305d ago

Complaint: Far Cry is the same game every release.

Suggestion: Make it like another past Far Cry game.

MadLad1305d ago

@Christopher

Pretty bad take, dude.

I literally suggested going back to when Farcry wasn't the same rinse and repeat it has been since 3.

It was a good try there, guy.
Keep at it. You'll get there someday.

Yui_Suzumiya1305d ago (Edited 1305d ago )

Yeah, I definitely want to play 5 because the story seriously intrigued me. So at some point I will try that one. Seems funny nobody ever mentions the first game and that's the only one I played, lol.

Christopher1305d ago

Bad take? You suggested rinsing and repeating an older game rather than a newer one. How can you complain about them rinsing and repeating when you want them to do the exact same thing?

Stop being hypocrites and don't say you don't like repeating elements, you just don't like it with newer games compared to the nostalgia of older games, a very common thing people don't understand is because memories don't evolve as games do and the glitter and glammer clouds our perspective.

JEECE1305d ago

Interesting that a lot of reviewers are willing to explore the scale so much to hit a sequel just for failing to iterate adequately. I have two problems with that though: 1) are they going to be consistent with this? As in, will they ding Sports Games, COD, Assassin's Creed, etc for the same reason? and 2) does it really make sense to hit a game so hard just for failing to iterate when you give games that are essentially broken higher scores? Like is FC6 really a 4 when games that have trash controls and an unstable framerate are a 6?

Kurt Russell1304d ago

It's up the reviewer I guess. I know I personally get bored when I have too much of the same thing... and would likely review negatively for it. I really enjoyed Assassins' Creed Odyssey, but I was over Valhalla before I started it because I had already put in so much time to Odyssey.

As for sports games, I know Fifa tends to not exactly get top notch reviews as of late.

Atticus_finch1305d ago

Fc3 was the moment they started going downhill.

Atticus_finch1305d ago

Sorry folks 2 was flawed but it was much better than any FC since then.

porkChop1305d ago

Ubisoft needs to stop forcing the AC structure into their other franchises. Give each franchise a unique formula, their own gimmicks, etc. People have been sick and tired of playing roughly the same game over and over.

NeoGamer2321305d ago

Innovation is good and all.

But there is something to be said for games that ship without a lot of major flaws. Ubisoft consistently does that.

I'm a huge Far Cry fan. It looks way better than 5. I can’t wait to play it.

1305d ago
Father__Merrin1305d ago

Still not played 5 yet, they all follow same model though

RaidenBlack1305d ago

Of course IGN gives it an 8.
Where as other publications are criticizing it being the same old game with a new skin.

But games like Days Gone

Yeah doesn’t do anything to “evolve the genre” or “another open world game

jjb19811305d ago

I really enjoy the Far Cry games. I've only completed 3 and 5. I never finished 2 because the Malaria sickness was annoying. I'm probably 80% through FC4. Part 4 definitely had the weakest villain. I only wish that part 6 came with a level editor. The community always comes up with some amazing maps.

Far Cry Has Become A Shadow Of Its Former Self

Following a series of repetitive games, a formulaic approach, and a disappointing last entry, the Far Cry series has been run into the ground.

The trouble with most criticisms of this franchise is that they insist Far Cry 3 was the best game, but the things they claim to hate about the franchise are all the elements that 3 introduced.

Deeeeznuuuts284d ago

Couldn't agree with you more! I've always thought that, my personal favourite is two, the whole atmosphere, mystery, adrenaline, my vehicle steaming up because I've crashed too many times trying to escape and then getting in a shootout, having to pull a bullet out my arm while fire rages and bullets fly, can't beat it

JEECE284d ago

Yep, 2 is my favorite by far as well, and one of my favorite singleplayer games of all time. It was probably one of the last games Ubisoft made before they started homogenizing their franchises to be open world collect-a-thons with unnecessary RPG mechanics tacked on. I enjoyed 3 for what it was, but it was clearly an attempt to make the franchise appeal to a mass audience (which, in fairness, was successful).

LucasRuinedChildhood284d ago

That's not the issue. If Far Cry 3 never existed and they just made another 5 or 6 games that were increasingly generic copies of Far Cry 2 instead, would that make FC2 the real problem?

No. It's the lack of creativity and effort that followed that's the real issue.

And there are things that are genuinely different about FC3. Simple example - the story was easily the best. Best main villain by far too but it also has strong themes and wasn't afraid to explore controversial topics. The sequels are much blander.

Comparing the fun and creativity of Blood Dragon to the DLC in the sequels ... also says a lot about how Ubisoft fell off.

-Foxtrot284d ago

Yeah like even Far Cry 4 was decent, not as great as FC3 but they still gave us an interesting story, setting and villain. Pagan Min's random calls to Ajay were pretty funny.

They just got lazier and lazier, pumping them out while making it a little more streamlined each time. I mean Jesus, they gave us a silent protagonist with FC5 which really hurt the main story and are obsessed with pleasing everyone by trying to do two characters, male and female rather than just settling on one to tell the best story they can.

neutralgamer1992284d ago

I started FC6 and yes the game works fine but I just wssnt Fun. Do many Ubi games are huge playgrounds but feel empty and doesn't give the feeling of a world which is lived in

JEECE283d ago

I have found that the more recent FC games work better as what I call "background games." Basically what I mean is it's nice to have an active save in one of them going for those times you have 45 minutes to play games and just want to have fun and don't want to get bogged down playing a game online or starting a new game and spending all your time into an annoying tutorial. Like I haven't touched FC4 in years but I know if I had 30 minutes to an hour to play I could hop in and easily be back in the swing of things and attack an outpost and have a good time.

I think a lot of people use big RPGs like Skyrim or Cyberpunk in a similar way.

isarai284d ago

Yes because FC3 executed those aspects better. Every game since FC3 has just been Frankensteined off the bones of FC3 with half the effort.

Michiel1989284d ago

you could say it's a far cry from what it was

wesnytsfs284d ago

Ubisoft gets a lot of hate for their content filling of maps. Personally I enjoy the mechanic when i play an open world game I like revealing hte entire map and doing all the side mission stuff before i go into main missions. Far Cry and the RPG AC maps where a joy to play.

RaidenBlack284d ago

Far Cry 2 was soo unique ... it was ahead of its time and is often misunderstood (thank you Clint Hocking, can't wait for his next game Assassins Creed Hexe)
(yes, FC2 was a departure from from FC1, so in strictest sense, Crysis 1 & 3 are the truer successors)

JEECE284d ago

Yep. Unfortunately there has been so little since then that has scratched the same itch. Really the closest thing has been BOTW, which uses a lot of similar systems (though ironically FC2 came out before Ubisoft put the Assassin's Creed towers in Far Cry, while BOTW had Ubi towers). Obviously it isn't a shooter though. I keep hoping that that some indie dev will put an FC2-esque game out on Steam, but so far I've been left wanting.

Sircolby45284d ago

I actually enjoyed Far Cry 5 and New Dawn. Far Cry 6 was a joke. It was a step backwards in every way. That was probably the worst Far Cry I have ever played.

Played and enjoyed Far Cry, Far Cry 3 and 4 campaigns .

-Foxtrot415d ago

4 wasn’t so bad

Pagan Min was pretty entertaining

Skuletor415d ago

Yeah, 4 was good, was hard choosing which Golden Dawn member to side with, when they were both pieces of sh!t.
I've beaten all the main entries except 2 and 6, ended up uninstalling 6 to download something else instead.

Profchaos415d ago

I'd love a far cry pack with the original PC game (not the half assed port on ps360) instincts, predator even a port of far cry 2 to modern consoles back when these games had their own identity and weren't far cry 3 cut and pastel

Demetrius415d ago

Still one of my most favorite franchises along with assassins creed

banger88415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Same here, I don't know why these games get so much hate. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them, with only a couple of exceptions. I wish they'd hurry up and announce Far Cry 7. The only thing I'm concerned about is the rumoured time limit.
