Tales of Arise Is Built on the Back of Star Ocean

Tales of Arise continues the long-running JRPG franchise, but it also takes liberal inspiration from another prominent series, Star Ocean.

Since when was Star Ocean a “prominent” series

Hofstaderman934d ago

The Last Star Ocean game was awful.

SegaSaturn669934d ago

I just quit it midway through. It feels like a ps2 game.

FinalFantasyFanatic934d ago

I just couldn't finish the last 2 games, the last one I enjoyed was Till the End of Time, haven't started Last Departure R yet.

Teflon02934d ago

I love JRPGs and I bought that on ps4. I couldn't believe how bad it was. Made me question if Star ocean was ever good lmao

Hofstaderman934d ago (Edited 934d ago )

@forkymental I think SquareEnix ripped that from the Matrix

Godmars290934d ago

But much was learned from it?

Failure is the greatest teacher after all. Apparently.

Finished it already and traded it in, it wasn't that great. It was a long tedious drawn out story that never did much for me other than frustrate me most of the time. I only brought it because ever since FF7 remake I've been getting into JRPG's more but now I know the Tales series is not for me. The funny thing is... I remember buying Scarlet Nexus thinking it was just the appetizer till Tales of Arise came out, but I ended up liking Scarlet Nexus more, I still have Scarlet while Tales got traded in the day after I beat it.

Teflon02934d ago

Found scarlet nexus to be the one somewhat disappointing of the 2. I liked em both, but tales was way better. Think your issue is, FFVII is a rare case in JRPGs where it's done so well anyone can kinda enjoy, where Tales is more for JRPG and anime fans. Scarlet nexus is basically just an anime styled action game. So makes sense you'd enjoy it more if you're only getting into jrpgs

Seraphim934d ago

I was slightly disappointed in both for various reasons; mainly trivial. However, they were great games, imo. For the record I obtained the platinum trophy for both. Though, despite having bonding events and RPG elements, yes teflon, I agree that Scarlet Nexus is more of an anime styled action game. Personally I have a hard time classifying games like that as an RPG. To each their own but that's where I stand.

@ Mr Bubbles - graphically some of these games may leave something to be desired as some are a bit older but if you're getting into, or want to get into JRPGs I strongly suggest Trails of Cold Steel 1-4 and the Ys series. Don't sleep on those Falcom games as, like Tony the Tiger would say, They're GREAT!! Also I'd suggest maybe trying a game like Tales of Vesperia since it should be available or on sale at some point for pretty cheap. imo Vesperia is a better overall experience than Arise. Plus it has an option that makes it easier to configure what exactly your party members do. Which was one glaring issue I did have with Arise... obviously there a lot of other JRPGs out there...

tiael_dq934d ago

I mean Star Ocean was built on the back of Tales of Phantasia.

Tales of Arise Has Sold 3 Million Copies Before Releasing on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus

The beloved JRPG Tales of Arise has become available on Xbox and PC Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue today, but not before passing 3 million copies sold.

Knightofelemia62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

It's a great entry into the Tales franchise I enjoyed it. I just wonder if Namco will make a new Tales game. Or will they make a sequel or prequel to Arise. Like they have with past Tales games like Berseria being a prequel to Zestiria, Tales of Xillia got a sequel, Tales of Symphonia got a sequel even though it's crap. Either way I am excited for the next Tales game.

SeTTriP62d ago

Game was phenomenal to me it deserves the success.

Lexreborn262d ago

I would love a modern remake of Phantasia.

Shane Kim62d ago

I have slept om this series. First game was Arise and it was awesome. I just didn't like the end where they threw one mini boss after the other until the last boss.

Finally, Resistance: Retribution 🔥

It's an alright month overall. I think Sony should try to more consistently get some high quality indies Day 1 in the service, e.g. Ultros would have been good. Those have usually been some of the better months, e.g. Stray, Sea Of Stars, Tchia.

Shame that for this version of Outer Worlds, you can't import your save. 😔 Truly Spacer's Choice

darthv7269d ago

retribution was a cool game. It's the only one that allowed you to link a DS3 controller using Resistance 2 to play it (as far as i know). It was an interesting experiment that didnt offer 2nd analog support though but Im betting this version does.

Eonjay69d ago

Good point. One assumes that is the reason for the delay on releasing it.

ChasterMies69d ago

Joke’s on Outer Worlds Spacers Choice. I quit after the first planet in Outer Worlds.

MaximusPrime_69d ago

Glad I didn't buy NFS rebound. I expected this to be on PS Plus.

Unbound lol. N I got it for 15 physical, 🤷🏽. I'll take it. Jus got extra this year for $80, which is a great deal. If I can pay $80 on sale every year I'd stick with Extra. I don't mind buying a game but then it shows up here cause then I can download it to have it digitally but still have MY copy. Once they take it off I can still play it.

Eonjay69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

You can say what you want about day one purchases but besides that Plus really blows GamePass out of the water.

NFS, Outer Worlds and 4 different Tales of Games... and Retribution. And you throw the monthly games on top of that... its no competition.

BTW... how is it that no one realized that Microsoft could just put its games on Plus. No one seems to realize that Microsoft and Sony are now working to enrich each other. (Console ware is over)

darthv7269d ago

Sadly, Retribution is only for premium users... not us extra folk. I do have the original UMD, but it would be nice to get it digitally like i did with killzone liberation and stardust. Both of which i already owned digitally on my Go/Vita and it was cool when those were made available for the PS5 as then i could dl them.

Eonjay69d ago

This is one UMD I never had but thats really awesome you still have an original.

ChasterMies69d ago

How can Game Pass be the best deal on gaming when it is more expensive than PS+?

badboyz0969d ago

Plus you need a platform to.

Petebloodyonion69d ago

Gamepass PC is way cheaper to PS+ and even way cheaper if you use MS rewards points

Redgrave69d ago

Is that Jet Moto 2, under Resistance? As of writing, it's just an image and no text.

Redgrave69d ago

It's been fixed, and yes it is

Toecutter0069d ago (Edited 69d ago )

Why is the Killzone series still M.I.A? I still love playing splitscreen co-op of KZ3.

MrBaskerville68d ago

They did release the psp top down shooter a while back. So it's not completely forgotten.

That’s cool. I bought in on a sale for like $15, or $20. Was gonna play it, but new games keep coming out. Now FF7 Rebirth is about to come out, so again I will have to push this til later.

I did play Scarlet Nexus on Gamepass, so it doesn’t surprise me that they will release this there to get a bit more income.

I've been eyeing it up (and Scarlet Nexus) for ages so this is the perfect opportunity!
