Sony’s new PS5 firmware can make your games slightly faster

How big a frame-rate bump? Tests get down to the percentile level.

They tested more than one game and a "free" 1-3% increase is pretty good.

Indeed 1-3% gain is not typical for a console update. In fact that tiny difference is enough to be significant in many previous head to heads with the XSX. Mighty impressive.

this is how console development works, they are always looking to squeeze out every last drop of performance

The only reason PS5 hasn't had the VRR update yet is because Sony are waiting for the new HDMI 2.1 protocol.

For other games that could potentially be the difference of it keeping a solid 60fps vs those 1-2 frame drops in certain intense scenes. Any and all improvements are welcome.

It's also a good reminder that, considering the size of the system and the cooling solutions, Sony just may be starting to exploit that in a less public way than MS boosting the Xbox One OG clock speeds where that was a larger 10% boost.

An increase that small was never going to be a game changer it's just a little improvement that makes your games run slightly smoother whether you notice it or not.

That's because Control already runs at a locked 60fps on PS5 or 30fps with Ray tracing.

Sure 58 to 60fps is negligible, but 28 to 30 is quite a lot.

They just look different now. A better UI. I don’t know about screenshots, I turned that off
