Remakes are the new remasters. But the question of why this is the case is a little more difficult to pin down.
Already terribly bored at the thought of it. I hope they are complete remakes so that its a fresh journey with new emotional experiences and not just a really shiny coat of paint.
I’m not lolz
I'm hoping for new experiences, so if something old can be revitalized like the RE2 remake I'm all for it, that has to be the best remake of all time when you consider the sheer scale of improvements and the fact it wasn't identical to the original. More of that treatment please, we don't need a cheap resolution boost to make the aging assets look even worse under a clearer microscope.
I’m not going to reject the idea.. depends which game is being remade.. Gives hope for Legend of Dragoon remake..
Remakes are good for people who never played the game when it first released. I'm a big Souls fan for example, but never got to play Demon's Souls, so the remake was a very welcome one. Same with Mass Effect Legendary edition, never played any ME before, going to give it a go soon.
The only remake that I truly want is The Legend of Dragoon. Please do it Sony/Bluepoint. We need more RPGs!
It depends for me. There are a lot of games that don't need remakes. But others, like Alpha Protocol, deserve another shot. That game had great ideas but Sega pushed it out before it was finished.
Of course games that need to be remake, buggy title with flawed mechanics, will never be touched.
Except for the fact you have to look at plans for KOTOR to see how they are more likely going to ruin the loved classic by bringing it into modern times. they hi=red a writer that has already proclaimed in the past that she is not a fan of KOTOR. And her inclusion simply appears to be an attempt at bringing the SJW culture into the story line. (so tired of the felt need to do this everyplace) And they plan on completely changing the combat style of the game which is what helped make KOTOR the great game it was. No more turn based option and simply action adventure. Give me a break.
I've seen Itsgundam video about it... She is ridiculous, and who is hiring these people I don't know. Why is this new writer needed? Why?
“ they hi=red a writer that has already proclaimed in the past that she is not a fan of KOTOR” This is a massive load of bullshit and you know it. I’m sick of this talking point. The writer said KOTOR is “one of” her favourites, and when asked for clarification on whether it was her absolute favourite she said no (it’s some other Star Wars game) - this ‘no’ response is the one that got circulated and used as ‘proof’ that she somehow hates the game. “ her inclusion simply appears to be an attempt at bringing the SJW culture into the story line” Despite people on Reddit and other places bringing this up, no one can tell me what they mean. What’s ‘SJW culture’ and how will they inject it into the story? “Completely changing the combat style” God I hope not, the turn based D&D system makes the gameplay so unique. Where have you seen this?
The combat was pretty terrible even back in 2003, so sure hope they change it. The rest of what you said seems like made up nonsense.
If it's a quality remake of a game that I haven't played in 10 or so years that I loved then by all means I'm ready to experience it all over again. It's as close as you can get to experiencing it for the first time, a second time. As long as they don't force stuff that doesn't belong, like KOTOR being rewritten by someone who didn't even like the original and has an agenda.
Remakes should add content and improve things not just be straight up copy and paste
Go watch some soap opera. Your too sappy
Capcom has been doing this for a loooong time.
Sony is one of the most egregious companies.
For sure of late they are. It's like the only new idea they have is to remaster/remake something that is just a few years old sometimes. I mean Wolverine... great in 2025. But all the remasters/remakes are out of hand.
What remake have they done?
@killbill When did they announce wolverine for 2025 or are you spreading false info?
Ted, you seem to struggling to hide your dislike of Sony recently. Like cheering on the Bethesda acquisition because it increases competition and humbles consumers: "I like to see stuff like this happen to, one, humble people, and two, actually create honest competition between the only two console manufacturers actually going head to head with each other." And then getting angry at Wolverine being exclusive because that sort of competition is unnecessary and unfair to working class families (Bethesda exclusives thankfully just "humbled" working class families who only have a PS, I suppose, lol): "Tell that to families of kids whose parents can only afford one console. Sorry, bud. I know you want to play Spiderman, but you only have an Xbox and dad doesn't make enough to get you a Playstation. Exclusivity is dumb." All of the big 3 engage in remakes, remasters and reboots. MS had Halo: Master Chief Collection, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, and Rare Replay last gen which was a large portion of their first party catalogue. You can add endless Skyrim remasters to the mix now, and they have Perfect Dark coming up. Nintendo remastered almost every Wii U exclusive and are selling games like Skyward Sword for $60.
Sony is the best company when it comes to remakes. I take their remakes over the stupid hd remasters anyday.
@TedCruz Why do you think remakes are a problem all of a sudden, even though some remakes have been better than some shoddy made new games? It's the same reason people hate super hero games now all of a sudden. You guys aren't fooling anyone.
@LucasRuinedChildhood You just gave a good example of the main hypocrisy on this site. Everything is against the consumer, as long as it's the company I don't like getting the brunt of the attacks.
Egregious? No, sorry but I love their SotC, TLOU2, Demon's Souls remakes and more. They are great.
Bluepoint* Sony doesn’t own them…yet. Honestly they haven’t disappointed so far. Really curious to see how their first IP will play out. Hopefully it’ll be successful, they deserve it.
“Tell that to families of kids whose parents can...” Sounds like a Liam Neeson movie lol! “Honey, your IP has been Taken! By Marco of Tropoja.”
I agree. Sony nickel and dimes gamers more than any other videogame developer out there. It's amazing how blatantly obvious they with making people purchase a remake of an old game. I understand they need the money. But they could get it another way. They shouldn't resort to this bull shit.
Edit: delete this editors... I found him.
Remakes and Remasters are 2 very different things. Reimagining a classic for modern times is in itself an art. RE2, FF7 and Demons Souls have been some of the best games of the last couple years. Keep the remakes coming. Most remasters come off like cheap cash ins. FF8 Remastered did a good job as a remaster. The Arkham trilogy, THQ Nordic games etc are cheap cash ins. If it’s done well it’s welcome.
I agree. I put Remasters in two categories... 1) Ports, All they did was bring the game to the next gen with no changes 2) True Remasters. Upgraded textures, environments, etc. and are taking advantage of the new hardware to provide a better visual/sound/controller experience. Then there are remakes. Essentially they rebuild the game as if it was new, but taking full advantage of the technologies now to improve the game. Then finally their are the director's cuts, definitive editions, etc. Essentially a cash grab with all game expansions and remastering combined.
That's not a bad thing. There are plenty of great games that could definitely use a fresh coat of paint or more.
I'd like to see a remake of Soul Reaver, Vagrant Story, Driver, Metal Gear Solid. There are so many good games from back in the PS1 and PS2 era.
I'm 1000% ok with the Perfect Dark remake/reboot.
Same here man... I just really hope they get it right... I'm scared to be hopeful about it, because Perfect Dark was literally my life when I was younger lol. I played thousands of hours without a doubt. It needs a robust Combat Simulator, split-screen multiplayer, a huge arsenal of unique weapons and a robust variety of maps. If they can nail that multi-player right. It could be legendary. As for the single-player side of things, I just really hope they include the unlockable cheats for doing things in a certain time and whatnot. Also, please keep the hidden cheeses!
I played at least 200 hours of combat simulator. It was so fun with the custom settings. It's my 2nd favorite FPS of all time. I still go back and play the HD version on Xbox every now and again.
You're half a gen late, a good chunk of games last gen have been remakes. I've made it a rule for myself that if it's a 1 to 1 remake I'm not getting it no matter how nice the graphics may look. Either gimme something like FF7 or gimme a sequel/reboot. The excuse was "we can have both and the money would go into a revival or to fund other games". Well turns out most publishers don't care to reboot or fund new IPs and now they churn out remakes for games that don't even need em
And I absolutely hate it. Once in a blue moon I can handle a remake. But when I see so much focus on remakes during a new generation it is disheartening that the choice to make a quick buck by recycling old material is chosen over simply producing new work.
When I mentioned this a few months ago, I got hated on for it 😁🤦🏻♂️ I really hate the fact that Naughty dog is remaking TLOU when we don't even need a remake 😑
Has that been confirmed, I thought it was only a rumor
@ColePSSX, are you 4 real or what? You have to ask what remake they haven't done. And your wolverine is out next year...summer, bundled with Spiderman 2. /s You know why they are making tlou remake... PC. Use your brain.
I’d love a remake of Zelda a link to the last and the original metal gear solid. I’d be down for Max Payne 1&2 getting full remakes too!
Depends on the game and level of emotional attachment I have with it. So far the remakes I've played I absolutely loved. Thps, crash and Spyro being my highlights. I don't think this takes away from new releases as we still are investment in new games all the time but nostalgia is a good excuse for a b team to remake a product whike the a team focus on a new product as Dev times can be 2 to 5 years or more so why not cash in on the back catalogue while that new entry is being made. I'm not afraid of remakes watering down new games I'm more afraid of games being made for streaming or gamepass specifically bite size games made for two to 4 hour playthrough with mediocre everything think Netflix style movies average at the very best and nothing that will ever stick with you after the credits roll.
If the game developers and publishers of this era were more ambitious I would discourage remakes much more. And yet Square Enix massacred FFXIII, gouged out FFXV and launched FFXIV into a 4 year painful redemption of lacking leadership. I welcomed FFVIIR because at least someone already did that.
I would pick any Final Fantasy Remake over new shooters and over any new Skyrim style "RPG" on any day, anytime!! Remakes are far better in quality than Destiny, COD, Fortnite, FIFA, NBA2k etc
I would take a Xenogears remake over any Final Fantasy in a heartbeat. That game deserves recognition and a second chance to really finish what was originally intended for the second half of the game. Sadly, it’s just not a possibility right now. I hate to say never because I’m holding out hope that one day Square and Monolith Soft could find a way to work out some kind of agreement to get it green-lit, but we all know chances are slim to none. You know it’s futile when people start creating petitions on change.org to get it remastered. And yes, obviously I signed…the game holds a special place in my heart, if you couldn’t tell by now ❤️ I will always keep my hope alive. Anything can happen.
Personally love it, the pre full hd and antialiasing era has not aged well. Just compare Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's souls, Crash, Spyro, RE2/3, Tony hawk, and Ratchet to their originals. For all but nostalgic reasons there is no reason to play the originals.
We've been in it for a while. It's better than the remaster era
I'll take a remake over not having a game at all.
The reasons aren’t difficult at all. Games are expensive to make and it’s safer to capitalize off of known successful IPs of the past that simultaneously tap into peoples nostalgia for even more chance at success. Hollywood does the same thing.
The only good news out of this whole remake era is that I get to catch up on my backlog since I've already played, beaten and enjoyed a majority of these remakes coming.
We ask for old games remake because we miss and lost quality in current days .
Exactly. Game design has fallen off a cliff.
This industry is showing signs that just like Hollyweird is starting to get creatively bankrupt... when it comes to AAA games that is because the indie scene is thriving and that is the reason as to why for some time now I play a lot more indie games than AAA games.
Remake MGS 1-4 then..
Movies got there a while back. Seems fitting. If we get Legend of Dragoon out of it I’ll be happy
I don't mind some remakes. Sick of remasters. And the games should be old enough to be remade.
Better than remaster era
I have zero issues with remakes. For those that want to play the originals, they still exist. I'll choose to play the remakes instead.
Last gen was the remaster era. Or as known as the capcom re4 era...or also known as the Skyrim era.
Somebody clearly never owned a PS3.
"Remakes are the new remasters. But the question of why this is the case is a little more difficult to pin down." Actually, the answer is pretty easy Making a remake of a known game with some already established assets like a game engine, or gameplay design is cheaper to produced and less risky financially compared to a new IP. Now the reason why we see more and more remakes versus remaster is simply that Microsoft and PC usually give the update free of charge making it hard for Sony to justify the 40$ as they did with the PS4 Era. The best example of this would be Skyrim Legendary edition where they gave the upgrade for free on PC because it was basically the same thing as playing the PC version on high setting. Another example would be Alan wake which is getting a full remaster edition, it's basically the current steam version with some graphical color change. Here's the current Pc version running at 4K https://www.youtube.com/wat... As you can see in the settings, the 4K option is already there.
They'll manage to inject their corporate think-tanked lifelessness into these remakes and ruin them along the way just like every other hollow, trashy, unpolished game that comes out nowadays; very few exceptions noted here and there.
I'd love a legacy of kain HD
I'm still waiting for dino crisis remake
There are definitely some older games I’d like to be remade . Not all of them but some deserve it for sure . All you have to do if you don’t like remakes is …. Don’t buy them
Remakes of games that were once classics and players actually want in current-generation graphics now are a rare sight. Most companies release "remakes" now because they've run out of ideas to create something new.
If anything, remakes of older games highlight just how shit most modern games are, because the Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 2 remakes were two of the best games I played last gen.
