The Outerhaven writes: First-person shooters (or FPS for you grandchildren of boomers) is one of my favorite genres in gaming. I grew up playing games such as Doom, Quake III Arena, Unreal Tournament 2004, and others. But then something happened.
FPS games are only good when theyre good atm.
I just wish they'd do more with the actual perspective and movement. First person view in games are so unrealistic and the lack of movement is what keeps me away from most fps.
Yea but that kind of movement would just make for a dizzying experience.
Getting dizzy was half the fun of playing Mirror's Edge. Was fun having vertigo for a week after
Sony : FPS? Yea we forgot about that ...
that's not Sony though, they just have a timed deal. Regardless, that game was going to probably happen. Plus Arkane makes FPS
They tried with Killzone and Resistance but CoD and Battlefield are so dominating and oppressive that nothing else can compete. So they just stopped trying eventually.
I didn’t realize that they stopped trying cause of that. I always thought they stopped because they like the devs doing what they want and not forcing IPs on them. I’d rather have Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon than another CoD

Sometimes son its best to leave well enough alone.
You guys have to excuse him. Killzone and Horizon are FPS and the topic is about FPS. Fortnite is 3rd person...smh.
Aphelion is mostly right, though. Listen, I love Sony and have owned everything they've ever sold (including the damned PSP GO) but It was right around 2007 or so that they really wanted to take a slice at their own "Halo Killer" with Killzone. I remember at launch, they were really pushing Unreal Tournament 3 and saying, "hey! Does this count?". Same goes for other genres that Microsoft seemed hellbent on pushing, with Quantum Theory being touted as a Gears of War Killer and so on and so forth. There was a healthy amount of competition at that time. But to the subject at hand, FPSs have always had to work harder to maintain my interest, and I think that's why developers started taking the "S" out of it, and we got other genre/style mashups like Mirror's Edge with it's parkour and platforming and um......Gone Home. Strapping a gun to a first person perspective is a knee-slappingly good time for some people, but unless you go all in on realism (Operation Flashpoint) or an obsessive microdetailing of "gunfeel" like BLACK, things can get old real fast. Games of yesteryear got around boring/generic by just being wacky. Turok, Timesplitters, Oddworld: Strangers Wrath just went apeshit with interesting "weapons" which are still insanely memorable to this day. Hell, I was having a conversation with a friend about mines. Something as simple as a remote-detonation or proximity line (like Goldeneye) was just so damned awesome and hilarious at the same time. Shooters can be some of the most boring and generic stuff in a videogame, and economical because developers don't have to model a full player character (at least in many Indie games) but adherence to the status quo can crippling for new ideas that carry with them alot of risk.
Resistance was great. Sony should revive that. I guess it didn't sell that well. I remember the original coming out around the same time as Halo 3 and I kinda liked Resistance's campaign more.
This is not an editorial. It is a whole page of waaaaahhhhh. It is collection of complaints really, about what one person likes and a lot about what they hate. It is hardly informative unless you personally care about the likes and dislikes of Josh Piedra.
I love FPS games, I'll take more. If you actually count, there's wayyyy more 3rd person games. Possibly 3x or more Also this should be in a new section called 'Rant'
Yeah. the majority of games now are 3rd person. Very few good fps out there
Yeah unfortunately soany people like to post their opinions as news and the best way to get as many eyes over it is using a site like n4g to attract clicks you wouldn't normally get. It's been years since I found any of these pay attention to me I'm so important whinging articles relevant more often they are written by outliers that just don't like the current gaming trend such as I hate open world's, battle royales, new game in popular franchise is bad because it's more accessible and popular or I liked it before it was cool
"Yeah unfortunately soany people like to post their opinions as news and the best way to get as many eyes over it is using a site like n4g to attract clicks you wouldn't normally get." Yea unfortunately your comment is a useless strawman fallacy. Worthless comment.
It is healthy to have a varied diet.
Your medal is in the mail.
Playstation has a huge library of games that are not First Person Shooters. That being said, I wish they would make a KILLZONE 4. We can take the PS4 Shadowfall out of the cannon.
I enjoyed Shadow Fall but I got to a certain point and kept dying so I gave up. I had it on the easiest difficulty and still couldn't finish it. I had no trouble with the first three. So they need to massively scale down the difficulty as well.
You're just experiencing a burnout. Take a break.
Depends on the franchise I myself I have been COD out for a very long time not a fan of Battlefield, Overwatch got stale. Not a Halo fan love Bioshock, L4D, L4D2, B4B just seems generic if Insomniac released a new Resistance game I would jump on that. Again I say it depends on the franchise will I get the new Halo I doubt it maybe when it starts kicking around that $20 range. As for Deathloop from what I saw it looks ok I don't have a PS5 so I can't really get a feel for the game.
It's because they release a new COD and Battlefield every year. You can't even invest in the current release w/o another iteration coming out in a few months.
Play something else there are a lot of quality games. Something for everyone. Relax and enjoy
I think a good story driven FPS is always welcome, just that there aren't that many around. Either way, just don't play them.. last FPS game I played was perhaps 3 or 4 years ago.
And that's just one chunk of a very large market. Then don't buy them.
It's an exception when I actually do enjoy an FPS. Never cared much for them. That said, it feels like every couple of years, someone complains about being sick of them, only to jump right back into them within, say, a matter of months. I wouldn't take this kind of commentary very seriously.
then dont play them? ffs
Then play other genres? Plenty of other great games lol.
Me too. Too many of them
I love them. Can't wait for Atomic heart and stalker.
I kinda agree. The video game industry is oversaturated w/ FPS games. Seems like every game released now is an FPS game. Perhaps that's what the younger generation desires given their affinity for trash like Apex, COD, Fortnite, etc. but to me it's all boring. There's only so many FPS games you can play.
I can't stand multiplayer centric FPS games but I love story driven ones. Can't wait to see how the new BioShock will fare. We need more FPS games because we're seriously lacking in them right now.
At least it's not the 360/PS3 gen where we were flooded with FPS and shooters and not much else sprinkled here and there.
I'm sick that there's not enough story driven, single player FPS games similar to BioShock, Half-life, Wolfenstein and so on. Most rely too heavy on multiplayer aspects.
Garry's Mod was very fun, and the upcoming successor S&box on Source 2 will be one of the best multiplayer games you can play for years. Tons of game modes not just FPS. Zombie Survival type games are fairly strong gameplay wise too. But yea, i imagine Valve will be releasing more goodness at some point for those who want single player stuff.
FPS can be great but I am not into the yearly CoD Battlefield stuff . Halo is stale too . I enjoyed games like Bioshock and others like it but we get competitive stuff mostly and I’m not into PVP these days . I’m not tired of FPS just what they are offering in the FPS space mostly . Give me a new Bioshock and I’ll buy it day 1 .
I don't like FPS games either. Because I like to look at the character and her interaction in the world. You see the new armor, the new belt case, etc. The fact that there are a lot of FPS games is, I think, because it requires less work (motion capture) and it's cheaper.
