Tales of Arise is confident, clever, deep, and more than a little bit beautiful. It’s a genre high point of recent years.
Agreed, let this be the beginning of the JRPG renaissance. Let Persona 5 Royal, Tales of Arise, Shin Megami Tensei V, Dragon Quest XI S, Three Houses, Xenoblade, Yakuza 0/Like a Dragon, Y's, Trails of Cold Steel, FFXVI, and FFVIIR bring new life to jrpgs, and eventually Sony, please remake Legend of Dragoon! Also, though maybe not traditional jrpgs, don't forget Dragon's Dogma 2, BotW2, Forspoken, Monster Hunter, and Elden Ring!
you said it all for me....but not only sequels to those famous series ...they should start new AAA JRPGs ideas why they were capable ot create back them and not now?
Because the home market(Japan) lost interest in console RPG titles due to their commuter lifestyle. Portable and mobile gaming also became substantially more profitable so major studios like Sega, Square Enix and Konami shifted much of their focus to those platforms.
Enjoyable game with witty (non-cringe) dialogue & visually impressive. I don't enjoy the dodge mechanic, not saying its difficult, just seems awkward to use >.> or offish
The timing has to be just right . At first I thought it was somewhat poorly designed but as I got the timing down with the monsters attacks it became very useful . I wouldn’t say it’s perfect but it’s not bad like my initial impression .
That might be a stretch. The game is pretty average, to me.
I agree. It's very good. I'm only in the second area, feels like the soviet union, lol. I like the more serious themes of authoritarianism, which are pretty relatable these days. Graphics are beautiful, the combat especially surprised me, it's deep, but lots of fun. It wades you into the various mechanics at a reasonable pace, and before you know it, you're dodging, attacking, zipping around the battlefield, using special moves, attacking weak spots, lots of fun.
The 2nd area gave me those vibes too but I was getting more East Germany Stasi comparisons with their informant stooges army.
I'm sorry, but if you're lumping this in with Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 it is not even close to being as good as those. The game is slightly above average. There's so many design decisions in this game that people rip other JRPGs up for. I swear, I feel like I woke up and I'm in bizarre-o world with how much praise people are giving this game. The final area is wearing me out with how long the battles take and fighting the same enemies over and over... the environments are so empty, I dunno, like I'm glad people are enjoying the game, but it's not the best JRPG I've played in recent years.
You're right except now you're lumping in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with P5 and FF7r.
Tales of Arise is far better than those games for me. FF7 remake is too on rails, Persona 5 lost my interest after Komoshida and Xenoblade 2 had some very bad dialogue/accents.
FF7 Remake on rails? What do you mean?
IMO, of those games, only Persona 5 Royal beats it, so far, but not the rest. My opinion may change before I finish the game. That said, if you look at any metadata, this game is clearly loved by much of its audience. Not just critic reviews, but users, steam, playtime, the the opinions on this very message forum. Not everyone has to love every game, and like you said, even you say it is above average, but imply that perhaps it is just not one of your favorites, so it isn't a big leap to assume that it might be someone else's favorite. There is only a small gap between above average and really good. It's not like there is a big contingent saying the game is bad, while most other games will have at least some people hating on it, so just that fact alone is pretty telling about the reception of this game. When the people who probably like it the least, even think it is above average.
Oh trust me, I know. I feel like I’m the crazy one here. I don’t want to sh*t on the game or anything. There’s things I like, but I do not think it’s a great game or anywhere near as good as the aforementioned games. If anything I’m jealous that I can’t have the same experience as y’all that like it so much.
I'll drink to that!
I disagree. The characters are insanely annoying (especially Shionne and Rinwell) and the dialogue is awful. The English voice acting has to be one of the worst out there. The gameplay is very tedious, enemies are damage-sponge they just don't die. Dungeons have zero challenge to them, no puzzles, nothing clever you just go from point A to point B. The world also doesn't feel 'whole' without an overworld every city/realm is basically connected in a very weird way. This is a very generic and average RPG, it's dumbed down and made specifically fro newcomers to the genre.
I think I understand.. it's just that new generation of players grep up who just don't know any better. Dumped down mechanics, gacha, loot boxes... these are OK for them
You know, I think that’s it. I was talking about how JRPGs just aren’t as good as they used to be from the SNES to PS2 era and I was told I’m a f*cking idiot.
