PS5 vs PS3 Sales Comparison - July 2021

July 2021 is the ninth month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 665,651 units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 6.25 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 10.44 million units in nine months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 4.18 million units. Month nine for the PlayStation 5 is July 2021 and for the PlayStation 4 is July 2007.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 16 where it had sold 10.85 million units.

Not sure what the logic in comparing PS5 to PS3 is?

PS3 was a very expensive console in its first year of release, and was difficult to develop for, limiting the number of games for it.

I would be more interested and have already seen comparisons to PS2, Sony's best ever selling console!

This website just just comparing the sales of the current systems to the 7th gen

VGC wasn’t collection weekly sales data during the 6th gen

Its interseting to see how PS did back then compared to now. PS4 is still selling, so we can't see where thats going to end up.
I guess looking at the overall sales will give a little bit of an idea where PS5 is going to end up.
I do wonder how the sales would be going if there wasn't for covid\chip shortage\etc. It would have been good to see where PS4 was at this time for some comparison.
