Fans Have Waited Long Enough For A New PlayStation Showcase

All has been somewhat quiet on the PlayStation showcase front in recent times, so it may very well be time to come out and start swinging.

Same thing was said about playstation before the ps5 stuff started....patience is a virtue.

We're beyond patience. The Summer is almost over and there has been nothing. At least put a date out or a message to the community so people know what to expect. Silence can be powerful at the right moment, but it's entering the boiling point and closing in on the biggest sales months of the year. We need to know what's on the Horizon (pun intended) for the remainder of 2021, and what to expect early 2022. I suspect early / mid September we'll have news as that's the month the big games start to release. If not then we need a PS Experience revival in December.

TheDoomedGuy1395d ago

No we don't need to know.

We already know that we can expect horizon zero dawn and God of war next year. Those are 2 huge titles already. There will likely be 2-4 other titles.

IRetrouk1395d ago

I'm sorry, I just don't feel that way, I have plenty to play, I know some of what's coming and what's due next year, I can wait for info on games I'm not gonna get to play for a while, it's just not getting to me like that🤷‍♂️ we know something is due, we just don't know when, sony is not stupid, they have done this dance for almost 30 years now.

@TheDoomedGuy

Horizon and God of War might not be for everyone, which is exactly why there is a need for such an event. They'll be big sellers, but PlayStation thrives of diversity, and people just want to know what to look forward to. There are 3 exclusives launching next month, and I've seen almost no press for them since their State of Play.

@jump

If you don't care then you weren't part of the we. Obviously.

Square has FF16, FF Souls, and Forspoken all coming which one is coming first. Deathloop, Kena, and Death Stranding Director's Cut are coming in September and need a final showing before release to get people re-excited. Horizon, Ghostwire Tokyo, Stray, and God of War are next year, the first three scheduled for Early 2022, is God of War coming March / April like usual or is it Summer / Fall 2022. What's going on with Gran Turismo 7. Has the Bluepoint acquisition gone through. What are Deviation Games (former COD devs) / Haven (Jade Raymond and AC devs) / Firewalk Studio (former Bungie devs) working on. All of this has already been shown or announced in some form, and is enough for a conference alone, yet there hasn't been a single update on it since. If you and the collective don't care that's fine, but there are still plenty of us who do, and we want to know.

We're not asking for games in 2023 - 2025, we're asking for updates on games they've already shown, and partnerships they've already announced.

Its like people are forgetting we have been in a pandemic for god knows how long. Obviously this has affected a lot of things even to the point that getting a next gen console itself is a struggle.

So imagine the scenario not from a gamers point of view but from a company/developer point of view which would be.. what is the point of releasing new information on games when -
A. The majority of the intended user base cant even GET the console due to supply issues therefore.
B. The projected games due for release are probably and may as well be delayed a few months because this will affect the sales of games, if half the people cant buy the console they want the game for of course sales for said games are going to dip. That being said leads to point C. - Why drown out your previous games releases by releasing/announcing NEW games before the maximum potential of sales of the older games has been reached? It would not make sense to even announce NEW games at the minute. It seems as if Sony are just simply waiting for more PS5s to be in more customers hands before they announce anything new. They have GT7 + Horizon sequel to come which will both be mega sellers.
Sony right now are tactically in a brilliant position they dont need to do anything just yet except allow those PS5s to continue to fly off they shelves as they have been.
They also will be holding back news from future games for backup ammo when MS start showing their upcoming and future releases. as I said Sony are tactically in a brilliant position they dont need to do anything right now.

"We're not asking for games in 2023 - 2025, we're asking for updates on games they've already shown, and partnerships they've already announced."

And it's funny how you say it's silly to want that, but in this very same thread about 5 comments down you're complaining about people who were upset that Sony was showing games too soon, and taking jabs at Phil Spencer for showing games 4 - 5 years in advance. So what is, you say it's silly for us to want to see games that are coming within the next 9 months - 16 months, but then you're also complaining about people wanting to see games that are still in development and might be 2 - 5 years out, pick a struggle. And this is why you can't have a logical conversation with people who fan out this hard, because it's always an attack or argument in their fan-world. There's nothing wrong with people wanting to see more games, and it almost blows my mind that y'all are sitting here mad and bitter because people want to see and know what's coming and when.

I could have added the other 8 studios, as I have listed below your other comment, but what would be the point when those games are more likely to be holiday 2022 games and into 2023. We can see those games next-year when they're closer to releasing, what needs to be focused on is what's coming up NOW and early 2022. You're acting as if they're never going to show any of these games again just because they're announced, let's not act brand new to gaming or showcases for that matter.

1. FF16 has had minor showings, a full demo section with updates on the world, story elements, etc... is needed.
2. Stranger of Paradise had a demo, but they can show gameplay from a later section of the game.
3. Forspoken had a very brief showcase, they can show more of the open-world / cities / story elements etc...
4. Deathloop can show more gameplay section from the female characters perspective.
5. Kena can use more gameplay from a later section.
6. Death Stranding Director's Cut can show more of the gameplay changes and graphics (fps) update.
7. Horizon can show a different environment within the map.
8. Ghostwire Tokyo hasn't shown anything in a while
9. Stray had enough of a demo, so a smaller showing would suffice.
10. An updated gameplay demo of Gran Turismo 7
11. You ignored Deviation Games
12. You ignored Haven Games
13. You ignored Firewalk Studios
14. We haven't seen anything from God of War

So yeah that is more than enough to keep gamers informed. And as I said to you further down, there's 3rd party stuff like Call of Duty which launches in less than 2 months, but hasn't shown anything. Adding to that list Pragmata, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy, GTAV PS5 (get it out of the way), FF14: Endwalker, Dying Light 2, Yakuza Lost Judgement, Ghostrunner console version, Solar Ash, Whatever Abandoned turns out to be, and more.

And you and all the people blindly disagreeing will be right there with us watching all of it.

There's a few things here.

1. Sony has allot in the works and many projects that are being developed. Next year will be a great year for PS5 with all their exclusives. At the moment things are still to early to announce anything, if they did have a showcase and announce things it would be far out and Sony would have to opt to CG trailers in which nobody likes. All, in all their newer projects are just too early to show off right now, it's in the early stages.

2. Sony said it themselves they are comfortable with the pace of the PS5 sales. They don't need to advertise, promote or do showcases as nearly as much as their competitor has to. This is true with the PS3 where they had to attend all the showcases, clever and funny ad campaigns with Kevin Butler. This also isn't the beginning of last gen where they has to beat Their competitor to the punch on everything. They don't have anything to prove right now unlike their competitor who has to promote, advertise and attend every showcase possible.

It's just like you said they were quiet last year mainly because Ghosts and TLOU2 was releasing last summer. It wasn't until mid summer they started promoting their new console. Sony can save their money and resources as they comfortably continue to outsell their competition.

specialguest1394d ago

I disagree with your point #2. Being ahead of the competition shouldn't mean you kick your feet up and relax. They have their fans to showcase something to be excited about. It's called arrogance if they feel it's not necessary to do anything for an extended period of time

NeoGamer2321394d ago

I can agree with that. I think there needs to be a marketing rule in gaming....

Thou shalt not show or announce a game until it is a maximum of 12 months from verified release. We see all these shows and showcases over and over with "coming soon". And coming soon means anything from 6 months to 7 years (Last Guardian as an example).

I always enjoy the announcements and then releases shortly after. not the nauseating wait as the delays pile up.

zypher1394d ago (Edited 1394d ago )

“They don't need to advertise, promote or do showcases as nearly as much as their competitor has to.”

Aggressive MS got us the early days of the 360, when they sometimes outsold the PS3 2:1 in the US, and multiplats regularly sold at that ratio in 360’s favor. Then they got complacent, thought they could coast by on their past success, thought their success with multiplats meant they didn’t need to invest as much in first-party content as much. That attitude cost them the remainder of the seventh, and all of the eighth generations. Now we’ve got aggressive MS again - swallowing entire publishers, giving away Gamepass to increase their player base, taking every opportunity to highlight Series X’s features. I doubt we’ll ever see a non-aggressive MS going forward.

This is not a time for Sony to assume complacency. I’m not sure why any PlayStation fan would even want them to.

I mean, if there's nothing to show.... after all Sony seems to be waiting closer to when their games actual release to drop more information and build up short term hype before release. Not to say it would likely happen with major Sony IPs but a long hype period is just bad for games and gaming in general imo. In recent years it seems Sony announces a sequel/game to quiet the rumor mill then go silent; for the most part. Now I know they showcased Horizon at some point this year but the fact of the matter is that we have no idea when exactly these games are going to be close to ready and releasing. Sure Sony & the developers behind these franchises have their timeline but it's of benefit to no one to be showcasing games early. Least of which is because deadlines can be missed, delays real, etc, etc. Personally speaking, I don't want GoW or whatever other IPs news and info unless a release window approaching. The well known IPs and developers behind are going to do a great job.... At the same time, yeah, it would be nice to hear some news or get a release date but by all mean, imo, Sony is handling pre-marketing or exposure of titles excellently.

GhostofHorizon1395d ago

It certainly wouldn't hurt them to show off a few new things.

SlothLordPootus1395d ago

Although it's certainly great to hear about new projects, game developers/publishers have really put themselves in a bad situation. Everyone is announcing games that are 3+ years out. In my eyes that's not really acceptable or needed, there's enough games to go around, and not announcing big games way ahead of time would give indies space to be showcased as well.

Snakeeater251395d ago

Maybe they have no gameplay ready to show

1395d ago
ABizzel11395d ago

@jump

As I said above they have 3 games coming out next month that need a final showing, 3 games confirmed for early next year. 2 games already announced with no release date and no updates. 3 New IP partnerships announced. An alleged leaked / possible acquisition waiting to be confirmed. 3 huge JRPGs announced from square. And still 8 or so developers who have unannounced games, some of which have two teams, that could be releasing in 2022.

Excluding the last-bit that's still 11 games that can be shown, and plenty of 3rd party and indie content waiting to be shown as well. COD still has no trailer and it launches in less than 3 months.

PlayStation Showcase is a better term, perhaps originally coined by PlayStation Blog Sid Shuman, but its a better differentiation of the much shorter State of Play. State of Play is catchier but its too late, State of Play is synonomous with short bursts and brief updates now, however.

Muigi1395d ago

I’ve just been playing my backlog people act like last gen games are just shit all of a sudden lol. Patience we all know the quality of Sony’s first party studios, no doubt they will exceed our expectations.

GhostofHorizon1395d ago

Exactly, I've been trying to catch up on some of my PS3 and PS4 backlog inbetqeen the PS5 games I want to play. If you have trouble finding something to play it says more about you than anything about the state of Playstation/games in 2021.
