Standards group IEEE fights trolls with new patent pools

Anyone who pays attention to the development of technology should be aware of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, better known as the IEEE. The nonprofit organization helps set standards for technology that ensure interoperability of hardware from a variety of manufacturers, and it has seen a number of its standards (notably 802.11) widely adopted. But the adoption of standards can often run afoul of patent issues-see Rambus versus the DDR standard for an obvious example. To help prevent this from occurring, the IEEE is teaming up with a licensing company owned by Dolby Labs to streamline the process of creating patent pools that cover the technology vital to implementing its standards.
