Sony has revealed sales figures for some key titles including Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
I have to admit, i have two copies of SM:MM. one for PS4 and one for PS5. So my double dipping helped contribute to that [miles]tone... get it?
You bought it twice or you mean you played it on ps4 and ps5? It has a free upgrade.
Yeah i would hope he meant played it twice once on ps4 then again ps5
I got it first for PS4, then I got a copy with my ps5 from gamestop (it was sold as a packaged deal). And it worked out okay as i let my son play the ps4 version.
Jokes on him if he did buy it twice.
A fool and his money parted ways.
A bit surprised by Returnal. It's not a bad number for a new franchise goingfor $70. But I was expecting at least double that amount given how well received it was and the overall buzz surrounding it.
A few things to consider. It's limited by the fact that it's a PS5 exclusive, and not nearly as many PS5 are out in the wild. As a frame of reference, compare to R&C which has only sold 1.1m so far. A lot of people are deterred by the fact that there's no save feature, and will not purchase unless it gets an update. It also probably did not cost what MM or R&C cost to develop, and might not be held to the same standards / expectations by Sony. A game doesn't always need to sell several million copies to be successful / profitable.
I'm pretty sure the dev costs were low for Sony which is why they're so pleased with the current sales. Also more ppl will buy the game with each new ps5 sold so they probably are more concerned with the attatch ratio
Most people aren't going to know about stuff like the save system because most people aren't on N4G every day. 500,000 on a new console with not that much else to play is not the definition of a "mega hit"
@DOMination, after the launch window of a game is closed, reviews and word of mouth are nn important factor is continued sales. Many of the forums I visit have people expressing their reluctance to purchase the game until it gets a save feature, so I think you're wrong. And I'm willing to bet 560,000 is pretty good for a somewhat niche new IP released early in a console launch window. If Sony says its a mega hit for them, who am I to argue?
The save issues kills it for me. 4 people in my house use the PS5. Suspend and resume isn’t going to cut it.
Miles Morales is so good
I finally got SM: MM when they discounted it to $30
I just bought it this afternoon for PS4. Local store had it for 20 euro this week.
dang Returnal flopped huh
/s? R&C has only sold 1.1m, and it's a much bigger franchise. 560,00 is actually pretty good for a new IP w/ difficult gameplay / no save feature, and most importantly released inside a launch window when the majority of gamers can't even find a console.
Hardly. 560K for a AA game is pretty good for such a short period of time on the market. Not every game needs to sell Spiderman numbers to be considered a success. Housemarque isn't a massive studio and this game likely didn't cost much to develop.
It's an 'AA game' and 'didn't cost much to develop'. That's what I think as well and why I haven't bought it so far despite it being my most anticipated PS5 game so far. I think it's disgusting and greedy to have put that price on this game.
I doubt this game will ever break a million .
Is it profitable? Is it trending upwards from what Resogun/NexMachina/Matterfall sold? Again, I liken it to a Hellblade, minus the PC install base.
You think Sony would’ve bought Housemarque if they considered Returnal a flop?
Yeah they bought them to flip them into a Naughty Dog support studio where they will model Abby's armpit hair
@Notanother Oh you let the mask slip. Imagine the sad individual behind a comment like that.
You have to remember this is a very niche game. And not many people have PS5's. And it was a AA game. I'm sure if they weren't happy with sales and it lost them a bunch of money they would not be saying they are happy with it.
It is considered a big hit for Sony. Maybe they know something you don't have an idea about?
I have stock in Sony
By making millions $.
Returnal had a better attach rate that Bloodborne. When it launched I specualted that Sony would be satisfied with 350k sales. As far as I'm concerned, it's been a massive success for what is essentially a fairly niche title
Surprised by The Show
Why it's on xbox and games pass. This is why the MLB wanted this as a cross platform game, it's a no brainer.
It's hard to say if Returnal is a massive success or failier because it had several things going against it and still managed to have an attach rate of 5.6%. These obstacles are new IP, $70 price tag at launch, rougelike genre, and small console install base compared to previous generation consoles. With numbers like this I think it is no wonder Sony wants to make several ps5 games come to ps4 and I won't be surprised we are still hearing of shortages all the way in 2023.
To all those thinking Returnal flopped, it's a hard-as-nails rouge-like (or lite, I can't remember the definition), and it's a brand new IP. Selling only 500k less than R&C is pretty impressive, even with 1 month longer on the market. It's also probably Housemarque's best selling game for a long while.
Was expecting slightly better numbers all round to be totally honest, mostly because i have all these games and they are must plays atleast to me anyway. Maybe 70 dollar price tag has hurt sales a bit, i definitely beleive that is the case atleast for returnal as its a fair bit of money for a new ip thats a very niche game aswell due to the rogue elements and difficulty. 500k aint bad but was think it wpuld be closer to the million mark.
Returnal had no business being $70. Should have launched at $40 or $50 max. Also, I expected M.M to be higher seeing as its also available on the ps4 and was $50.
I agree. I bought Returnal to support Sony/Housemarque but the game should have been a $40 to $50 title & nothing more, had it been in that price range it would have sold more.
That $70 price tag was all on Sony. Even the developers didn't know until Sony announced it. I didn't expect MM to break the base game from 2018 records, but its sales are still better than most AAA games even with its lower total sales. But, yeah, I thought it would hit 10m in its first year and I doubt it will hit that.
Seeing the sales figures for Returnal makes me appreciate how hard it is to sell a game. I loved that game, and I can’t imagine going through the trouble of getting a ps5 and not having it. It is THE best game to play on the ps5, second only to maybe R&C if the player doesn’t like super challenging games for whatever reason. I don’t know if all 10 million units sold actually made it to players yet, and I don’t know how much the R&C bundle in the EU affects this, but ultimately… … if you have a ps5 and have ever enjoyed a challenge, fork out the $70 for Returnal. Or get R&C if you are afraid of a challenge, albeit the very hard mode is always there if you want it to be almost as hard as Returnal. You are wasting having a ps5 if you still only have Spider-Man at this point. A lot of you are really, really missing out.
Looks like Returnal will be going to bargain bin pretty soon.
Do people not understand that anything over 250k for a AA game is profitable and a big success?
Doesn't matter. I bet they were hoping for at least twice as much, like R&C. How often good 1st party exclusive doesn't sell over 1mil?
I'll buy Returnal, even at $70, whenever they implement a save system in between biomes.
Don’t hold your breath
as much as i hate to say this, dont you think it's a good thing? cause if they have fewer sales, they gonna force to lower the price tag. Though for me either way is good cause i always wait for the price drop. But heard many good things about returnal, if its true i wish everyone got to experience playing it.
$70 and $60 price tags are really just an early adopter tax. Not just for this game, any game really. Last game I bought for full price is DBZ FighterZ, next one if going to be Ghosts of Tsushima: Director's Cut. I have no problem waiting for the game price to go down and a few patch updates under it's belt. Better quality for cheaper price. Not sure why everyone considers this a sprint or has to play the game within the first few months of it being released.
Sony have shipped more units of Spider Man: Miles Morales than Microsoft has of next gen console units... When it rains, it pours i guess.
Insomniac is just killing it.
Sony having way bigger success than Microsoft with its games. Very glad Sony officially stated Returnal was a big hit for them and they bought the developer. Spider Man MM and Ratched are amazing games. PS5 enyoing a lot of success and exclusive games while Microsoft still doesn't have a decent good exclusive games for its new generation.
Returnals numbers are abysmal. Knock it off.
Sony officially stated it is a hit for them. You are the one who needs to knock it off.
10 Million PS5s “allegedly” sold, and R&C only sold 1.1M? Returnal only 500k? 😂 No wonder Sony has to make PC games.
That's a pretty good bait. 👍
Maybe we should compare it to the exclusives released on the competing console. *Xbox has left the chat*
If we did that, Playstation and Xbox combined wouldn’t be able to touch Nintendo. Nintendo doesn’t have to make PC games.
Nintendo games also don't have to do voice acting, story, character development, sound effects, current graphics or MP and Xbox doesn't even have to make good games. If we add up Xbox and Nintendo they wouldn't equal the quality and quantity from PS.
Nintendo also has record selling games. Consoles you can actually buy in stores and online. That’s something Sony and Microsoft don’t have, and neither do their customers. Nintendo doesn’t have to make phone games or PC ports. 😂
"Nintendo doesn't have to make phone games" Yet all their games play like phone games on the switch lol. I get it you like simple kid games but you brought Nintendo into this not me. And I'm glad we agree PS has the quality and quantity.
I like “simple kid games” and adult content in games that don’t get censored. Is R&C anymore sophisticated and mature then Mario Odyssey? How long is it going to be before Sony and Microsoft fans get another next gen exclusive? Nintendo doesn’t have to make PC ports. 😂
Here's the parts you conveniently left out of your trolling post. "Insomniac Games’ wall-crawling adventure has moved 6.5 million copies" "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which came out LAST MONTH", how about give it more than a month to sell before making your little comments. and "Returnal has shifted 560,000 units." not 500k
It could be 6,500,001 if I could only get my hands on a PS5.
Not sure why these numbers are put together? Let's look at multi billion dollar franchise game compared to a brand new IP in space?
Hopefully returnal sales will spike when more of us have ps5
